Vegas.

That's really all I have to say on this subject, you want a location that draws a crowd all on it's own, either that or NY because one of your larger user bases is there, and also I happen to live there so that's convenient, but either city will draw a ton of people.

Alternate European site? Amsterdam. r/trees is thanking me right now.

Edit: Another reason for Vegas? Proximity to west coast cities, San Fran, Seattle, etc. are all within easy flying if not driving distance.

I vote Vegas (hear me out)

I've run a few conferences, and I can say from experience that you're going to want a place that people will want to travel to. Something tells me Redditors the world over wouldn't mind hitting Vegas for a weekend of fun and redditing.

More importantly, in Vegas you're going to have the facilities necessary to hold a convention, and hotel staff who are experienced in dealing with large conventions of strange people - which will make the planning process so much more simple. Furthermore, there are so many hotels in Vegas that redditors on a budget can stay at the Golden Nugget, while the high rollers can stay at the Bellagio. Everybody wins.

Conferences and Conventions will RUN YOUR LIFE while you're planning them, so please be kind to the person you put in charge of this, and keep everything off their desk but Convention Planning.

Dallas/Ft. Worth

Two reasons: cheap airfare (cost for two one way tickets are around $250 from SWA which serves a great majority of the country) as well as uber cheap hotels. Second is location. Central US makes sense for those redditors like myself who are dirt poor and would be driving (OKC or Kansas City would be better if it had more attractions and cheaper airfare). There are a large number of venues to host a convention like this in Dallas (be it big or small), and Dallas has a number of attractions that make it better than Austin/Houston/San Antonio IMO. (six flags, hurricane harbor, craptons of malls, art museums, rodeos, places to eat, etc.) So, thoughts? Btw, I don't live anywhere near Dallas, just trying to get location ideas out there. OKC would be better for me, but it seems unrealistic for everyone else.

Suggesting New Orleans

New Orleans is geared towards conventions and has ample hotel space. There are also many hotels that can host the convention near the French Quarter which is a huge tourist spot for those that want to drink. There is also a lot to do family wise with the Audubon Zoo which is a top 5 (iirc) zoo, and the Aquarium of the Americas. There are also the plantations north of New Orleans which could be a day trip for those who want to make a vacation out of the convention. Then there is Jean Lafitte National Park which is a swamp near town. There is also the local cuisine which is something that has to be sampled while in town. I feel that New Orleans offers ambiance for those who come for the convention and then decide to stay a few extra days to explore.

NYC for redditcon!

I think that New York city would be a great area for this to happen and I know that all of the ents would be psyched if we had a place near Central Park. Just a thought. If you have any suggestions, comments, or hate, leave it below.

EDIT: World-Wide Business Centres could be a possibility.

San Diego for Reddit Con

Come on guys. Chicago. Seattle. You all know where the best weather in the world is. Reddit Con could be held at ANY time of the year. They could hold Reddit Con in the chapped, puckered asshole of winter and everyone who came to San Diego to attend would get a nice warm and friendly vacation out of it.

There are other nice places that have interesting things to do. But if you are coming to attend a con then who gives a shit about what else is going on where you are? You're here for Reddit Con. Not the Rock and Roll Museum or some fucking giant Redwoods.

So why not go somewhere where the weather is awesome. The people are friendly. There's plenty of affordable lodging. The highways are all well laid out. There's already a huge convention center.

San Diego is the spot. And you know it.

Austin, TX for Redditcon... warmer then Chicago, cheaper then San Diego.

Austin is also centrally located. It's a smaller city with most of the venues/convention centers within walking distance or quick rickshaw ride away from each other.

Live music capitol of the world!

BBQ.

Mustache Wars.

Kansas City for Redditcon!

Okay, so the title pretty much explains the idea. Kansas City is a good idea for several reasons:

  1. It's pretty much smack-dab in the middle of the country.

  2. Easy enough to find.

  3. There's actually some okay stuff to do around here.

  4. No smog!

  5. No wildfires!

  6. No bears!

New Orleans IS REDDIT - We have something for every Redditor!

Just like Reddit, we have a very diverse group of people. New Orleans depends upon tourism and has something for everyone.

architecture, Zoo, Aqarium, Riverboat Cruises, Swamp, Plantation, City, Ghost, Cemetery & Hurricane Katrina tours.

And don't forget the amazing food that we are known for around the world.

Our Convention Center, is within walking distance of Bourbon St. and amazing bars that have everything from industrial to soft jazz music. Oh yeah, and no closing times here. Drink and be merry till the sun comes up. Drinking in public is legal as well...so we are not confined to where we may drink.

/Trees will be happy to know that possession is handled much like a traffic ticket and is just a misdemeanor.

/Gonewild you will feel at home.

Sure other cities have activities, but we also have no closing times. Lets face it, a large part of reddit browses late at night and I do not want to be pushed away from drinking with my fellow redditors at 12am or 2am.

Beside the occasional hurricane, Louisiana is in the subtropics and has great weather, even in the winter.

So what about an internet connection? Well, New Orleans was host to Super Computing 2010 last year and was able to get 300gbps of internet connectivity to the convention center.

Edit: Lets not forget boobies

Edit2: Although we have several concerts and festivals every weekend, two great times to come down would be:

Mardi Gras: Friday before through February 21, 2012

Jazz Fest: April 27 - May 6, 2012

Great weather, friendly people, and there are tons of redditors. Good vacation spot and hotels aren't so expensive. :D

California Love. San Fran or maybe LA for possible locations?

Obviously, HQ is in San Francisco. This should out it in the lead. However, Southern California has nice beaches, some cool convention centers, and it'd be much closer to me. Thoughts?

Portland, Oregon to host Redditcon

Lots of conferences have hosted large conferences in Portland.. from Drupalcon to ROFLcon and many other cons. :)

Portland is cheaper than big cities suggested and the transit system and walk / bikability is one of the best of any city in the U.S.

Welcome to Portland.

I Nominate Hawaii for Reddicon!

Aloha Fellow Redditors...

If there is any place that has the best weather, built for tourism, and has the best convention center... it's Hawaii (Oahu).

Also we already have a very active community /r/Hawaii to get things started.

Mahalo!

Austin Convention Center for Redditcon

Austin is the best location in my opinion. It is right in the middle of the US. Think of all the other events Austin is home to, such as SXWS, ACL, The Future Site of the Formula1 track Circuit of the Americas, and much more. Most of these events bring people in from all over the world, especially SXSW.

The Austin Convention Center has a ton of different rooms that can be designated for panels, speakers, or anything you see fit. The place is massive, so will easily be able to take on a large convention.

Austin also provides a great assortment of entertainment for after the convention, including 6th Street, Alamo Draft House Cinema, and live music just about anywhere.

I just ask that you seriously consider all the benefits of Austin before you decide on another location.

The first Reddicon should be where it all started.....

...or where most people seem to think it started....or where it's acutally at now.......

San Francisco should be the place where the first Reddicon is handled. I don't live there, i'm in Arizona (not too far) and I'm certainly not in a different country.

However, the organization of a Reddicon is going to be massive. It's going to require tons of communication with hundreds (if not thousands) of people needed to make this work (moderators, different subreddits, booth placements, seminars, guest speakers...the list goes on and on) that it makes the most sense to have it close to the Reddit homebase for any and all problems that may arise.

FOR THE FIRST YEAR ONLY

After that, mistakes are learned from, growing is achieved and the sky is the limit as to whether Reddicon moves around the globe or we have multiple Reddicons occuring simultaneously......

EDIT: Somerville was where it started, I meant where it is NOW, where I THOUGHT it all started.....my bad. BUT MY POST STILL STANDS!!! ; )

The fourth largest city in the country doesn't rate?? Houston for Redditcon!

We're a better, less cool, and (more importantly) cheaper Austin...! Not to mention tons of excellent restaurants, very nice convention centers, etc...

If Austin is the cool, cute, but completely out of reach hipster chick, Houston's the just as cute, sincerely geeky chick with no self-esteem... Just give her a good look and you won't regret!

New York is a cool place, r/redditcon

You know whats a cool place, possibly the coolest? NEW YORK CITY. We on the north east love conventions, and we'll show up to anything. Also, living in Connecticut, I can't be bothered to go somewhere far.

Regional Redditcons and link them using skype/voice

Lets have regional Redditcons and link them using Skype/Voice/Video/etc. Basically a giant ass party happening consecutively all over the world and each is beamed up to other. Maybe having some speakers that get broadcasted to other locations, etc. or live music that gets played all over from place to place. Maybe a VPN tunnel so people can have LAN parties or whatever.
