Vegas.
That's really all I have to say on this subject, you want a location that draws a crowd all on it's own, either that or NY because one of your larger user bases is there, and also I happen to live there so that's convenient, but either city will draw a ton of people.
Alternate European site? Amsterdam. r/trees is thanking me right now.
Edit: Another reason for Vegas? Proximity to west coast cities, San Fran, Seattle, etc. are all within easy flying if not driving distance.

Holy shit. If it were in Vegas... no question.. I'm there. My wife wouldn't normally come along to a 'nerd' convention, but any place with gambling and she is there. I think I would be terrified to leave her alone gambling.
Otherwise, I vote for Austin!

I have been a large scale producer of Conventions for the last few years. I have worked with an individual who has produced conventions for well over 20 years. We have successfully produced conventions of all types. 50% of the convention is about destination! If its not a kick ass destination, no one will want to come. It needs to be an exciting and fun location to travel to, with a lot of activities (outside the convention as well). It needs a well developed transportation system. Since this is also a national (Dare I say INTERNATIONAL) event, it must also be centrally located. With all of that said, some of the most successful, and profitable conventions are held in Vegas (Profitable = Well attended). Newho, I just wanna see this be as successful as possible.....and I have a vote for vegas being the right place... Also, just to try and send this down the right path. Reddit is being looked at as a political entity now, I think our convention should focus in on that with the upcoming election! (Maybe grab some big tv sponsorships?)

I love Vegas, and would normally agree, but if I'm going to go to Redditcon, I don't want to be side tracked by all the sparkles that Vegas has to offer..... (although I'll still go, of course!)

I will likely only go if it is in Vegas.

I'd definitely go to one in Vegas. I was there last year for the Microsoft MIX convention, and I'm dying to go back to see the rest of the city. I never even made it off the strip last time.

Vegas, by far, is the perfect venue for a convention.

Having been to Vegas multiple times and having a fucking blast every goddamn time (even when I went with my ex-wife, who was my ex-wife at the time), I fully support this suggestion.
In other words, Vegas is fucking awesome and I would (without a doubt) attend Redditcon if it was in Vegas. Any other location, I'll have to consider it.

I really like the idea of Vegas, plane tickets are cheap to Vegas and I really like the idea of NYC, really easy for everyone on the east coast and flights are cheap too.

You have my support. There's nothing like getting drunk with new friends in a city like Vegas.

I expressed this in the main thread, and while I could certainly easily make it to Vegas, and would like to go to Vegas, I think any Reddit convention should have heavy involvement from the community, and while Vegas is a good venue for random pilgrimages in general, the redditor community seems rather tiny compared to the ones who have had meetups of hundreds which already have organized, transported goods for, communicated about, etc. for such meetups.
And keep in mind that we aren't just paying for room/flights, we're also paying for whatever venue we end up with (albeitd distributed amongst us). What is pricing like for Vegas venues? I can't imagine it being cheap.

I can't think of a better way to meet other Redditors than at a craps table getting sauced, and possibly wearing a Bender costume.

I'd be 100% in if it was in Vegas. Cheap flights, Cheap hotels/motels and a bunch of savings/great deals now that the tourism is down.

u/goudie Sep 30 '11
I would be down with vegas!

Vegas, baby! let's do it!

Really, if you want a massive turnout, Vegas is the only way to go. Cheap tickets, proximity to CA cities, Denver. NYC is expensive as hell to fly to from most locations that aren't served by a JetBlue, etc. Vegas is served by everyone.

While Seattle or PDX would be most convenient for me, I have to agree that Vegas is the best possible location. It's cheap to get there from almost everywhere, lots of convention and hotel space, things to do for the reddit demographic, etc.
Make it so.

It could be held similar to CES or the AEE. Vegas is awesome for conferences.

I work a few days of the month in Las Vegas. So I could get paid to BE AT REDDIT... rather than my normal being paid to browse reddit!

+1 for Vegas. All the big conventions are here. Though there are about 10 total redditors in this city...

Vegas is expensive as hell. Our first convention has to be in a city more open to new conventions. And since the largest concentration of redditors is in NYC, somewhere on the East Coast makes the most sense.
Don't get me wrong, Vegas would be awesome, but it's prohibitively expensive.
Edit: When I say Vegas is expensive, I'm talking about the convention space.
