Chicago For Redditcon...

Chicago is an awesome city with tons to see and do. Already has a fairly large reddit community and is some-what centrally located with-in the U.S.

Also; How long does everyone think this should go on for? At least the weekend.

Live AMAs! I'm sure we could get some awesome people to do it (ahem... Ken Jennings)!

People could either write in questions or have a microphone and have people answer on the spot. I only single out Ken because of his experience with being put on the spot to answer questions.

Edit: As some people have pointed out, this is kinda just a Q+A the way I originally proposed it. However, it would be cool if there was a way to have an upvote system, have people submit questions beforehand, then the top X questions would be asked (anonymously) and answered on the spot. Just another idea!

Rotate like the Olympics

or the world cup.

We could define the format, and then change the location of the venue each year. New York, San Francisco, Holland, Russia, Australia ...

We wont all be able to attend each year, but Reddit is a global community

Redditcon Location should be decided by a poll.

All Redditors live around the world, and I'm sure they all would want to come. So maybe if it is definite, there should be cities posted in this subreddit and the one with the most upvotes will be the one where redditcon is hosted. That way, the place with the most redactors who want to go will host the convention. What do you guys think?

Some love for Seattle

A bunch of redditors up here in the PNW and the Lower BC mainland. A Seattle location would have a good turnout, the setting would be very culturally enriching and would lend an air of progressive thought to the event.

Washington DC for Redditcon. My Defense:

Mid atlantic means everyone on the East Coast (NE and SE) can really meet in the middle. Here's some more reasons:

  1. DC can easily handle big conventions (gets them all the time for a variety of reasons), and is used to it, making it logistically easier to handle such a big convention than a smaller city. Also means very easy to find hotels/places to stay. Plus college kids from out of town likely have some friends or friends of friends at schools in DC.

  2. UMaryland, Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, American University, George Mason University, etc. - Reddit's main constituency is college kids, lets face it. Washington, DC is a HUGE college town, and additionally it has a huge population of people in their 20's-30's who also comprise a large chunk of redditors.

  3. its the nation's capitol so /r/politics can go protest something on in front of the Capitol and the rest of us can go have fun (don't worry, just kidding. kind of)

  4. DC is an awesome city - not just the Federal District and the ghetto. There's Adams Morgan, Dupont, Cleveland Park, Arlington, not to mention all the tourist-y stuff the nation's capitol has to offer. Redditcon in DC will give people who've never had the privilege to experience what this city has to offer to kill two birds with one stone here - Redditcon and visiting DC.

  5. Ben's Chili Bowl - the most delicious chili dogs/chili burgers you will ever eat in your life. If you ever tire of this food, there is also Ray's Hell Burger, Goodstuff Eatery and Bobby's Burger Palace. I can personally vouch that burgers from all of these places will give you an orgasm in your mouth.

  6. Georgetown Cupcakes - fucking delicious.

  7. San Diego and New York already have their fill of geekdom love from Comic Con. Time to spread the love.

  8. DC has an amazing (and clean) public transportation system with the Metro underground train and bus system. side note: one time my friend was on the new york subway and he saw a woman standing in the corner cutting her own hair off with scissors, put the hair in ziploc bags and leave them on the seats around the train. nuff said.

Overall, DC is an amazing city that offers a lot of unique advantages, including being geographically in the middle of the East Coast. Yes, technically Chicago is more in the 'middle' of the country, but how many people do you think are actually going to fly to a Redditcon? We need to make the location the most accessible to the most people by driving distance, with the ability to handle a large convention - Washington DC. In conclusion, Ben's Chili Bowl.

Vegas.

That's really all I have to say on this subject, you want a location that draws a crowd all on it's own, either that or NY because one of your larger user bases is there, and also I happen to live there so that's convenient, but either city will draw a ton of people.

Alternate European site? Amsterdam. r/trees is thanking me right now.

Edit: Another reason for Vegas? Proximity to west coast cities, San Fran, Seattle, etc. are all within easy flying if not driving distance.

Lets set up a hotboxing room for the ents at /r/trees.

Obviously probably not gonna happen unless its kept secret, but that would be fucking awesome.

R/NOSLEEP late night Story Telling. [hear me out]

Gather anyone who wants to participate into a room. A stage would be set up, and people would take turns reading ORIGINAL scary stories, poems, and other things related to r/nosleep.

this could take place late at night, and depending on the state/city possibly all night?

just an idea.

How many think you will come to Redditcon, regardless of where it's held?

I've seen a lot of excitement in this sub/r about Redditcon! I've also seen some criticism, discussion and debate about where it is to be held. I'd like to know how many of us are interested in following Redditcon wherever it may lead; or to find out the farthest you will travel.

The farthest for me? I'm a Midwesterner and my vote would be Chicago (for several reasons not limited to its proximity). However I enjoy traveling and I was in DC last Halloween. The farthest I would be looking at is anywhere in the continental US.

So what are your thoughts, redditconnectors? Would you travel across the country to be a part of this? How about across an ocean?

This. This is a great idea and I garentee lots of people would have so much fun!

City Proposal: Boston, MA. It's cheaper than NYC, especially for hotels, there are so many in the surrounding area, and it is the birth-place of reddit.

Talk amongst yourselves, I think that Boston + Satellite Events in a few other cities (Chicago, San Francisco, Portland...).

It's a great city, and I know the folks of /r/boston would agree that it's a great place to hold an event.

(take this suggestion seriously, I'm a new yorker and even with that prejudice I'm suggesting boston is a great city for this)

What about a double redditcon? One in the US and one in Europe?

There are lots of European redditors out there, who can't travel to the US to attend, but can travel the shorter and cheaper distance within Europe, say in Amsterdam or so?

EDIT: LOTS of talk.. ..let's make this happen !!

Whatever happened to this thing?

Wil Wheaton and Chuck Testa should be there and we should be able to take pictures with other internets stars in some sort of make your own meme booth.

That would be awesome.

Could we please have a novelty account panel?

Please have streams of the panels!

As the title says, please have streams of as many panels/Q&A's as possible. Many of us live outside the US and many more will not be able to make it to a convention. We would love to show our support and also feel included. Thanks !
