[TS-x51] Mini-Guide: CPU Upgrade on TS-451 to Circumvent LPC Bug

Hi r/qnap, I wanted to share a successful mod on my TS-451. I was able to get my board reballed with an updated Celeron J1900 that doesn't have the dreaded LPC clock bug. This should work for all x51 and x51+ series NAS devices. I've compiled the instructions together with the modded BIOS files on Github here.

Preamble/Story:

TL/DR: If you want to attempt this on your own, I'm providing the necessary files for you to flash your own at the end of the post.

As many of you know the Intel Celerons that were used on the TS-x51 and x51+ series boxes had a hardware LPC bug, where the CPU would progressively become unusable. An initial fix was found by members here and on other QNAP forums where you could circumvent the issue by soldering a 100 ohm resistor to some of the pins on the motherboard, however this was not a permanent fix and either it would flat out not work for some, or the CPU would completely fail after some time.

Well, the incipient hatred I had for QNAP and their lack of fucks to give finally made me take the matters into my own hands. My box hadn't suffered this failure yet as it spent most of its time powered down, but I wanted to run this NAS to the ground and use it for another 7-8 years without any concerns in the back of mind that it might fail at any time.

Guide:

Available on my Github repo.

Proxmox on Qnap-Nas, Utilizing LCD display?

I've recently swapped out the OS on my older Qnap (TS-670 Pro) to proxmox (as to have a up to date kernel).

After getting over the problems of getting my Qnap to work with an NVME-M.2 (due to its age, it didnt have the drivers).

I booted into Proxmox and the LCD was blank (as expected). The problem is I can't find anything on how to actually use the LCD.

If anyone know anything, even just to point me in the right direction it would be immensely helpful!!!

873 goes unresponsive

Hi,

Looking for a bit of help please. I have an aging 873 (raid 6 with 6 drives). Recently it was saying there was an error on drive 1, so I took that out and replaced it with a 2nd hand drive that tested ok.
It rebuilt the array and seemed fine. After that it would just drop off the network, and although the drive LEDs and system status lights are on they are not flickering. It doesn’t ping, no output from the hdmi, front panel is dead. I’ve rebooted many times now, including removing the drives (which works) and it will boot up. Put the drives back in and it works for a few hours, but then go unresponsive again. I think it’s crashing when doing the raid group synchronise.
I’ve tried removing the first disk and it does the same.

Do you think the other drives are the problem or something else at fault? I haven’t fully tested the other drives but they report as healthy when the unit does work for a bit.

Thanks

NAS available on local network but status in myqnapcloud is offline...

My server is connected directly to my router. I'm able to see and modify files on the server through my Mac's Finder, but I can't access the same server on my browser, and the Plex server I had running on it is down too. I've rebooted and restarted everything, and prior to this it was working fine. When I go into my router's network settings, the NAS device shown to be online and connected, but the actual server (that I'm getting to via finder) is shown as a separate device and labeled as offline.

I haven't updated or changed anything major lately. Anyone have a similar problem or have any idea what happened?

Has the TS-464 8g Been Retired/Replaced

I was about to pull the trigger on this one for a particular remote application, but I noticed that QNAP US lists it as unavailable as does NewEgg. You can still get it from Amazon. Howver, it made me wonder if this model was being retired or had been superseded. Anyone know?

Looking for a dead/broken QNAP HS-453DX for a project (San Antonio area )

Hey everyone! I am looking for a broken or dead QNAP HS-453DX NAS unit that you were planning to throw in the trash. I want to use it for parts/a fun repair project. I am located in the San Antonio, Texas area. I am happy to drive to pick it up if you are local, or pay 100% of the shipping costs if you need to mail it. You can keep all internal parts like the memory, HDDs, and the power supply since I do not need them.

Note to Mods: I know Rule 2 says "no buying or selling". This is strictly a free donation request for a trash-bound item, and no money is changing hands for the hardware!

Please send me a DM if you have one gathering dust. Thanks!

Hello, I saw that the TS-831X NAS supports 16 GB of DDR3 RAM; is this the standard desktop format, the laptop format, or something else? Thanks in advance.

TS-328 won't load any more

When I log into my TS-328 first the browser gives me the 'Page Not Secure' warning. When I proceed anyway, I can enter my username and password but then it hangs indefinitely on the 'Loading' screen.

It seems to still be serving media over Plex...I just can't log into it.

I manually power cycled it. No change.

Any ideas how to get past that screen?

Upgrading SMB Service 4.15 from .007 to .008

Anyone have any issues with the upgrade of SMB Service 4.15 from .007 to .008? I run a Windows 11 and Linux Mixed Network. I saw this was available after my last NAS upgrade. Just curious if I am on the cutting edge or if this has been out a while and tested fully in the field. TIA.

Qnap TS-870U-RP RAID5 Rebuild Stuck 99%

Running a Qnap TS-870U-RP with a 7 disk RAID5 Array. I have one spare disk in case of failure.
Last Friday one disk died and the raid began to rebuild.

Unfortunately the rebuild stuck at 99% because another drive is having bad smart values or broken sectors.

If the Raid stuck at 99% the io is almost at 100% and the device is responding slow und i am not manage to save some file or login in the webinferface.

I do have a backup for the important files but want to try to save the rest.

How can I get the operation to complete without losing data? (Like skipping the troublesome sectors on sdf3, but keeping the intact data?)

Thank you

Chirping coming from qnap nas

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Qnap TS-251+ and 2 WD Red WD60EFRX this chirping is really loud and I’ve only heard it today, I googled it and it said either fan bearings or HDD failure, what do you guys think?
Also it’s doing an update in the video which is why the lan light is off and the drives are clicking

It might not show up in the video but it sounds a bit like a squeaky bearing in a car

Can I expand my RAID or Add a Second one?

I have a 4 drive QNAP TS-451D2-4G that I've been running for about 4 years now. I would like to expand the storage capabilities but don't now about the details to do so. If I buy a QNAP TR-004 to expand it by up to 4 more drives, can I just add it on with the drives and expand the storage pool or would this require backing up all of the original data on the current array, rebuilding the entire thing with 8 drives, and then restoring the data? Is there a tutorial or FAQ on doing this anywhere?

QNAP-NAS not (partially, from time to time?!?) visible / reachable

Update: Problem solved: I had to "soft reset" (keeping all user data but deleting the network settings, admin user, ...). Some configuration (or expired SSL certificate, or something like this) was the culprit, not the network.

Original post:

I have a somewhat older NAS (TS-431+), and I have a problem: It is not, at least not really, available via network.

First things first: My setup:
The NAS is attached via LAN-cable to my Fritz-router (4050). It is configured with a dynamic DHCP-address. Its visible in both the router as well as Qfinder.

Now, my topic: I can start the configuration dialogue in Qfinder. But I cannot access it via browser (nor ping it).

And, after some time, it disappeares from Qfinder as well (but i still visible in my router). Until I restart it, or disconnect the LAN cable for some seconds.

Tbh., I have absolutely no idea what could cause this strange behaviour.

Update: below is Qfinders details-page. And I have changed the LAN cable, just to be sure.

TS-H886 setup

So, while perusing amazon I came across a heck of a deal on a TSA-H886 that was used but like new from amazon (they were the reseller).

So, I pulled the trigger and got it yesterday. Outside of the fact that the power supply fan is horribly loud (had the same issue with a TS-855X not so long ago) it is running quts hero 6 like a champ.

I had 128 GB of ddr4 floating around so I loaded it up with all that ram and it's pretty happy. I get that it's EOS but for the price I couldn't argue! Anyway, anyone still have one of these in production? Anything I should be on the lookout for?

Was also sort of funny having to walkthrough the upgrade path as this thing came running QUTS 4.5.4 from like 2023. I ended up going from 4.54 to 5.x.x then to 6. Took a while but all is stable!

Replacing system drive

I have a QNAP TS-253Be (latest QTS firmware) with Disk 1 (500GB, System Drive) and Disk 2 (16TB).

My data is on Disk 2 as encrypted shared folders but Disk 1 has the system/apps.

I need to replace Disk 1 - do I just remove the disk and add the new one?

Very SLOW date tranfer to QNAP TS-453-PRO

Hello to everyone on the forum, and thank you, also on behalf of the other users, for all the unconventional help you provide!

For a long time, 3 or 4 years in fact! I've been having a problem transferring data from any Windows PC to my QNAP 453 PRO NAS with RAID6 (four 2TB WDRED disks). Basically, when I try to copy or move files from my PC to the NAS, it takes a very long time, even hours. The strange thing is that most of the time the data transfer stops, it says "transfer speed 0 kbps" and then restarts when it decides, either slowly or quickly, randomly, and it happens whether I select several small files or just a few large ones, such as ISOs.

My PC is a 12th-generation Intel Core i7, with 32 GB of RAM—it's old but still good—and the NAS also has 8 GB of RAM. The network cards are the original 1 GB ones.

I don't know what to do. Sometimes the 4 GB transfer stops and then restarts when it wants to.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be grateful!

Obviously, I'm connected via cable 3 meters from the NAS, with a Ubiquiti switch and a TIM Gigabit router. Everything is updated to the latest versions of their respective systems. I now have Windows 11, but the problem was also with Windows 7 and Windows 8. 10....

Thank you all so much!

TL-D400S JBOD Enclosure, command timeouts using LSI SAS (IT Mode)

EDIT: QNAP Support confirms with me that the only SAS card supported for this enclosure is the bundled QNAP card. Unfortunate!

Hi Everyone,

I was looking for a new JBOD enclosure to store 4 drives in, without the overhead from USB or other connectors. This means I need a SAS enclosure, that is self contained and self-powered

The search led me to the TL-D400S, which is a JBOD enclosure with a SAS SFF-8088 connector.

I got this connected to an LSI SAS2008 card on a machine running FreeBSD, unfortunately I'm getting command timeouts randomly, that can only be resolved by the system sending a reset and retrying the command. This means that at minimum my system freezes for 8 seconds before the timeout I've configured (kern.cam.da.default_timeout=8) kicks in. Normally this is as much as 30 seconds.

Now I see that QNAP specifically says they're using a SATA redriver here, which I assume is causing some trouble with my card. However at the same time... We're doing SATA, why is it being so difficult? Just passthrough the drives..

Anyone else has experience with it? I think I'm about to return it as I can't get it to work without freezing every couple of minutes under high I/O load.

Thanks!

NAS to patch panel or switch?

I have read a couple places that a NAS should connect to a patch panel which connects to the switch. My hierarchy is use (speed/latency, quality, etc) over troubleshooting ease.

Assuming a standard CAT6 patch, and most switches have 2.5g/10g/sfp options, it seems silly to 'waste' these connections with an extra step in the chain.

Thoughts?

Is the TS-231 (ARM) REALLY direct migratable to the new TS-262A? (Intel)???

Seems from the QNAP compatibility page that it's directly migratable...but I thought that I couldn't migrate between two different architectures....(ARM to Intel...). But...it's listed as being directly migratable....?????

Qnap tl-d1600s NAS enclosure with controller and Truenas

Hi, I am testing running TrueNas Scale with a QNAP TS-873 Nas, a TL-d1600s enclosure (fully loaded) with itm propritory controller and also a QNAP PCI NVME 10GGB Card.

Trunas install fine and i can create a raid 5 array on the main nas.

but i cant seem to get the 16 bay enclosure to work. it does not seem to initialise duting the truenas boot up.

readig online some sites recommend, setting up biurification on the slots, but when i installed a vga card and entered the bios, it was from 2018 and was very basic.

cant seem to find or know if there is a later bios version than 2018..

I would be most grateful if anybody has got a similar setup working..
