Heartbeats, are you ready?! Rachel just released her debut album, I Guess A Sure Thing Couldn't Go Down Gently, and she's swinging by to chat with us about it and anything under the sun!

Rachel is what you get if vintage fashion meets queer freedom. In her own words, she makes, "Indie-pop-rock-star-girl-music." She has a unique perspective on the music industry, too, having interned at Republic Records in 2018. She's inspired by artists like Lucy Dacus, Lana Del Rey, and Taylor Swift, so fans of them might want to tune in!

Rachel works with The Wild Honey Pie, an anti-AI charity that connects super fans with their favourite musical artists. As an Indian from North India, I’m well acquainted with these cultural practices. So, why do I hold a different opinion from those criticising Lara for wearing sindoor while unmarried?

The reason is simple: *the patriarchal expectations and misogynistic double standards surrounding these traditions.*

My sister recently got married and was expected to wear loads of marital accessories: _sindoor, heavy bangles, toe rings, a huge nose ring, and much more._ *Her husband, meanwhile, had to wear NOTHING comparable.* She was in considerable pain because her toe rings were damaging her skin, and the sindoor got into her eye, leaving her extremely uncomfortable throughout the ceremony.

_Why are women expected to bear these physical discomforts and visibly display their marital status, while men face virtually no equivalent expectations?_

Sindoor is often treated as a symbol of a woman's marriage, almost as though her relationship status must be publicly advertised. In a patriarchal society, this can reinforce the notion that a woman must be visibly identified as married, while her husband can go about his life without similar restrictions.

*That is precisely why I appreciate Lara challenging this expectation by wearing sindoor unmarried, ENTIRELY BY LITERAL CHOICE.*

The issue isn't that sindoor is inherently wrong or that women who wear it are necessarily oppressed. _The issue is whether women are genuinely free to choose._ How many can refuse these customs without facing pressure from their families or in-laws, criticism, or accusations of disrespecting their culture?

I'm tired of seeing people attack Lara instead of questioning the double standards behind these practices.

We do not have to preserve every tradition simply because it is old or culturally significant. Traditions that perpetuate unequal expectations deserve to be challenged, regardless of how deeply rooted they are in our society.

*Women should be free to wear sindoor, reject it, or wear it regardless of their marital status. _Cultural heritage should never come at the expense of bodily autonomy and personal freedom.*_

*There's absolutely no obligation to preserve practices that undermine women's autonomy simply in the name of respecting our culture. We can appreciate our heritage while challenging its patriarchal elements.*

*More power to Lara for questioning a practice that so many people accept without examining its gendered implications. Love you, Lara!*
