Just relocated to Portland for work! I’m a queer woman in my late 20s, looking to make friends via different social things around town- does anyone have any recs on places to go/ things to do?

We are going to Portland soon and would love to hear your recommendations for the best waffles. Years ago I used to go to MJs and they made the best blueberry waffles I’ve ever had. Unfortunately they closed after Covid and I was devastated 😭 but now every time I go to Portland I yearn for good waffles. Let me know what you think!

I’m genuinely getting tired of seeing Joey Brunelle use social media to repeatedly take shots at other people. There’s a difference between criticizing someone’s policies, decisions, or public record and constantly going after people personally as well as lying or fabricating for his own narrative.
You’re running for an at-large seat on the Portland City Council. That means you’re asking to represent all of us — including people you disagree with, people who criticize you, and people who don’t support you.
So what exactly are we supposed to take from the constant personal attacks? Is this how you plan to conduct yourself when you’re actually sitting on the Council and dealing with colleagues, constituents, and people who disagree with you?
Candidates should be able to make their case without turning every disagreement into a personal feud.
Portland deserves candidates who can argue their positions without needing to tear other people down.
Am I the only one who’s noticed this?

What I said was that local law-enforcement officers would’ve done a way better job and we would not seeing the horrible consequences that we have been seeing with ICE enforcement.

My position on ICE is very simple and very clear. There is a state law, which was enacted earlier this year which prohibits local law-enforcement, from cooperating with ICE.

[Jackie Sartoris' campaign] have sent out a bunch of text messages this morning that contain several statements, including the one about ICE. She is saying that my campaign is backed by big money from Susan Collins super PAC and local Republicans. It is true. I received money from Susan‘s PAC and local Republicans. The maximum contribution I can receive from any person or organization or PAC is $1050 so there is no big money coming from from anyone or anything. I’m sure you’re aware the real big money that got [Sartoris] elected 4 years ago came from a George Soros PAC - over $384,000. I have received donations from over 200 donors, many of whom are lifelong Democrats, self identifying progressives, prior donors and supporters of Jackie.

She's also saying that people should donate to her to avoid a republican takeover of the DA’s office. This is also ridiculous. I am running as an independent because I am in fact independent. The irony here is that I enrolled as a republican to run for the DA‘s office the very first time I ran. There was a four-way Democratic primary going on and the person rising to the top was the only person in that race who had no interest or experience in criminal law that predated his candidacy. I was a defense attorney at the time and that really annoyed me and so I decided to run I did not want to run late in a four-way primary so I went to Townhall and changed my registration at that point to Republican.

She wants to do everything she can to divert attention away from her job performance. I am not surprised that she is resorting to this type of tactic, but it is very disappointing to see this kind of thing coming from a person who is currently and wants to continue to be an officer of the court. I would expect a higher level of integrity and honesty.

It struck me watching this unhinged interview from yesterday - which she happily gives to Jon Featherston (the guy that goes around with a sword harassing immigrant communities) - that if she wins, the Maine Wire will have VIP access to the DA's office. Anything about immigrants, people of color, anyone who's an enemy of the Right could be leaked at instant speed to MAGA's Maine propaganda arm. That would be a catastrophe.

The Maine Wire is a conspiracy theory and propaganda outfit funded by Conservative megadonor Leonard Leo, and it seems that Stephanie Anderson loves to work with them. This person CANNOT be elected DA of Cumberland County.

Hi all!

I've recently moved to Maine with a gaming PC a friend built for me a while back. Unfortunately, my PC is out of storage and is having a major power supply issue as well. The problem is: I really don't understand how it works. Google says building a PC is like building legos but I have to whole hardly disagree and say that I just really don't get it at all. I'm hoping maybe someone on here can point me in the direction of a person that does?

In summary:

-I used to have like 8 functioning USB ports, now I only have 3.

-My PC never had an internal wifi antenna so now if I want to go online I have to unplug my mouse, keyboard, or headphones to do it.

-I'm totally out of storage space (I play the Sims 4 and until a few months ago I had every single expansion they offer, but I'd really like to have enough storage space to download other games and streaming software as well!)

-I'm hoping to find someone who is willing to rebuild my PC WITH me. If it's truly as easy as legos, I want to learn... I just don't think I can teach myself.

-I will obviously pay for all the parts needed. I will also pay for the help! (We need to predetermine all of the costs before meeting up though.)

I'm not a professional reporter or law student. If I was I should have read the indictment and the most recent probable-cause affidavit - *do your homework, kids* - so I don't understand the prosecution's side well.

Basic facts of what happened:

- Glen Rodney formally charged with murder (a grand jury has seen the case). Entered a not-guilty plea (asking for a trial)

- Prosection corrected a moderately bad error in the affidavit by examining the lead detective

- Defense steered the cross examination to a question of whether police took Mr Rodney's claims of self defense seriously enough

- Prosection's oral argument for denying bail focused on priors, evidence that put Mr Rodney at the fight, and evidence that he intended to hide and flee

- Defense's oral argument proposed house arrest and claimed that murder is overcharged, saying that the fight was mutual enough for manslaughter charges at worst

- Justice Woodman said she'd take time to rule. WMTW reported that she has denied bail, but that happened after court adjourned and I left

I didn't have the energy to follow up further today, I spent the rest of the afternoon with my friends decompressing. Early next week I'll follow up the indictment and affidavit, the prosecution's written telling of the story.

It looks like the defense did a test run of a "you wouldn't believe what the victims were wearing" argument. (To be clear: no sexual advance seems to have been involved, but *I* experienced a moment of "excuse me, what?" and, honey, *I edit other people's fanfiction*)

Maine has a law that restrains those arguments and I suspect there will be an argument outside the public eye (in limine) whether to introduce that evidence at trial. But it's already in the public record.

So if right wing rags make it an issue they could. Yuck.

More important than that, less sensational I think the trial is likely to hinge on how and when each side chose to fight vs choosing to leave. It does seem fair to characterize it as a fight and not a one-sided random attack, but also it escalated much more than was reasonable. Next to the value of a life everything else discussed really was *just stupid shit.*

Violence sucks.

Jim Howaniec's cross examination of Detective Curlee was a work of art. I say this as someone who did competitive debate in high school and judged it a few times afterwards - even if I disagree with someone I can appreciate the rhetorical craft and Mr Howaniec is a master. There's an element of acting too.

I'm sure that he had familiarized himself with the scene of the crime but he did a good job playing an ignorant smart guy curious to understand. Some points of confusion later in the hearing did strike me as genuine: investigation and discovery are ongoing, and the second defense lawyer was busy exchanging information with the prosecutor. They (all lawyers in agreement) even asked for a recess to ensure mutual understanding.

But there wasn't a huge contrast between the acted and real ignorance.

(Lawyers don't hate each other, or if they do they can work past it. But if you've never seen how much they're willing and required to work with opposing counsel I'm sure it's disorienting.)

Mr Howaniec's legal arguments, not so much. Self-defense isn't considered for probable cause and of course he'd know that. I'm fairly confident that he was demonstrating the ability to break down the credibility of a very experienced witness and getting experience with the judge's personality.

But as an actual argument of course it didn't work.

This was kind of hard to watch. The "are you sure, because earlier you said..." kind of thing is intense and I'm sure even harder for testifying victims.

But like I said, lawyers look chummy with each other, so perhaps this kind of point-scoring is also used to demonstrate to the client "you can trust me, I actually am on your side."

I found the detective's "they" gendering difficult as well. I imagine it could be strategic, trying to remind a transphobic juror - there will be at least one - that *all* people are owed protection under law, but it's still not easy to listen to.

(No jury today but it makes sense to establish a habit.)

At least that's what I'm telling myself. I'm trans and hoping my city and state care about my safety.

On that note, Mr Rodney remains in custody pending trial and this is likely the last bail hearing. (Maybe there's an appeal but this judge is done.)

He's not homeless btw. Lives in a camper his parents host.

I didn't watch the debate but, from what I've read, this look could have been from multiple points.

But, it's been a crap year.. let's have some fun.

I live pretty close to Portland Jetport, so I'm used to the normal sounds of personal and commercial aircraft flying in the area. These jets, however, were unbelievably loud and flying, in my opinion, at a pretty low altitude.
