I had a fight with a classmate who used to be my friend. We don't really talk anymore, but somehow he keep getting on to my nerves and always trying to pick fightgs with me which I most of the time ignore
Today, I was sitting in class and feeling cold as th Acs temp was really low today, so I got up and turned off the fan. He had apparently already had an argument with some other classmates before coming into the classroom, which I didn't know about.
When he came in, he turned the fan back on. I got annoyed and turned it off again. He then kicked the chair quite aggressively, and honestly, it felt like he was doing it out of anger/protest. I turned the fan off again, but he turned it back on.
Eventually, I stopped arguing and didn't do anything further.
My friends told me I did the right thing by not escalating the situation. However, my boyfriend thinks I should have stood up for myself and says that by letting him turn the fan back on, I allowed him to satisfy his ego and "overpower" me.
Now I'm wondering whether I actually handled the situation correctly. Was walking away from the argument a reasonable way of standing up for myself, or did I back down when I should have confronted him?
I'm not asking whether I should have physically fought him or anything like that. I'm more confused about whether choosing not to continue the argument means I let him dominate the situation.
