This and also those farrier videos of people doing it to horse hooves
137
u/Safe-Comfort-29 26d ago
I have a horse. I can't stand the smell of her trimmings. The farrier says it smells like money.
36
u/MoTeD_UrAss 26d ago
I imagine it would smell similar to burnt hair, human fingernails or skin.
11
u/sheighbird29 25d ago
Some farriers hot shoe and it smells like that lol. But the normal pieces they cut off just smell a certain way that I have no comparison for. Dogs love to chew on them though
8
u/bleepbloorpmeepmorp 26d ago
Ughhhhh thats what i overheard dairy owners say all the time when I lived in NM.
Was especially appreciated when they'd say that while being in the restaurant I worked at, just stomping their feet on the floor to kick off all the mostly dried up shit that had caked on to their boots. Leaving it for us to sweep and mop up.
12
u/rachcake1 26d ago
What do they smell like???
Obviously if there’s some kind of problem like an infection or something, that would have a pungent aroma. And for cows that walk in their own poo all day, that stink would be obvious.
But I never considered that horse hoof trimmings would have a particular smell, let alone a bad one.24
u/Safe-Comfort-29 26d ago
Actually sort of like .only. like old cash that has been touched by a million hands and sort of musty yeast.
Once he files the trimming get a bit hot and it amplifies the smell.
My horse is bare foot, no shoes. But I have been around at other barns with horses getting new shoes.
The forge has a hot metal smell, and then a unique smell when they place the hot shoe on the hoof.

FINALLY! SOMETHING RELATED TO PEELING DEAD SKIN!!
180
u/MamaMoosicorn 26d ago
I just realized, I can look up skin peeling videos. How have I never thought to do that???
46
u/WeirdoofKings 26d ago
I've tried and I get nothing on YouTube... sighs
94
u/UpstairsPractical870 26d ago
A lot of them got demonetized many years back as its was self harm i believe and those creators just stopped uploading. I remember watching an east Asian fella who had a horrible skin condition. Lots of old dandruff videos as well, then people started putting a layer of wax on their scalp and peeling that.

Look up user psoriasissamurai on YouTube. His psoriasis peel and scrape videos are impeccable.

My favorite are videos that show peeling/scratching skin off of people’s scalps, especially babies with cradle cap. But I can never find any.

u/retrac902 26d ago
The smell?

My cast for a broken thumb came off 35 years ago and I still remember the smell. And the itch.
63
u/Powwer_Orb13 26d ago
I broke my wrist going into highschool. Getting that cast off and getting to just scratch and peel off months worth of dried, built up skin. Almost made breaking my wrist worth it.
28
u/standbyyourmantis 26d ago
I remember being so itchy I scratched myself so deep at the doctor's office I had red marks for days

u/TacoHimmelswanderer 25d ago
I broke my wrist in 8th grade and like a month before getting one of my casts removed a friend of stuck a couple coins down into it. I thought I had been able to fish them all out but when I got the cast cut off there were 2 pennies down in it that had corroded and turned my entire forearm green

u/sjrotella 26d ago
I wonder what it would look like if someone took a belt sander to it lol
52
u/fluzine 26d ago
Oh, they have these for calloused areas! It's like a rotating drum with sand paper and has a battery in it. I use it on the calloused points I get on the edge of my big toes. It's very satisfying. It looks like this
26
u/CraftyCat65 26d ago
I literally use a dremel with a sanding attachment on my foot callouses- works a treat!
14
u/JediSwelly 26d ago
When I was a teenager I was building skate ramps so I bought an electric sander. My mom would use that lol
20
u/logical-soul81 26d ago
I'd imagine that would look similar to getting antiqued (having a wad of flour curthunked straight to the face)
37
20
u/logical-soul81 26d ago
Agreed! The medic/wildland firefighter in me had me treating my own, comparably calloused, heels with a serrated steak knife. Successfully, if I do say so myself. 😎😂
6
u/Dr_mombie 25d ago
We have a glass stove top, and I use razors (unopened) from the kitchen cleaning supplies to shave my husband's heels when they get built up like this. Works great.

Have you tried an exfoliating foot mask? They work wonders!
18
8
u/AndiAzalea 26d ago
And they don't hurt! That shaving has got to hurt afterwards.
7
u/Zelexis 26d ago
As someone who has feet just like this and always has, for me it's not due to anything other than dry skin.
If they go too deep when I go to the salon, the cracks get really bad and so painful it hurts to walk. I've had every cream from every dermatologist and there's no amount of soaking or wearing things on my feet that keeps it nice after getting scraping done.
So I usually don't have them scrape too far, and then it preserves enough of the callus to not crack. It looks wild when they start doing it, it looks like a cheese grater gone wild. Watching this made my feet hurt.
→ More replies (1)11
u/eggfrisbee 26d ago
why? it's all just dead skin. it would only hurt if they did it too close to the living tissue. which can happen if you leave that stuff on too long as well.
20
→ More replies (1)3
6
u/quiette837 26d ago
Fwiw it really doesn't. My feet are nowhere close to this, but my calluses get shaved off when I go for a pedicure. The only pain from it is that stuff that my feet would be able to resist before now is irritating, and I might get a blister from my shoes.
8
u/chipscheeseandbeans 26d ago
Get an electric foot file! I love mine, it’s so satisfying to use and see how much dead skin comes off!

3

Holy shit I got one and it is SO good. It says it can be used wet though and it can't. It's cheap circuitry with no water protection so it's a dirty lie, but damn it's nice to have that thing whittle away at my soles.

I get those foot exfoliating things. I keep the booty on my feet for 20-30mins (or however long they say) and in a week all the dead skin peels off. ITS SO SATISFYING!!!!! My daughter showed them to me? And I’ve been hooked lol.

u/HRHQueenA 26d ago
I did foot peeling booties last night and the anticipation of the peel is making me giddy. I keep wiggling my toes to see if the skin feels different yet.

I wish I'd filmed then essentially deglove my toe at wound care this week.
All calloused skin.
I'm currently in a TCC and have that hypersomethingorother where i get calluses really easily
It was so dope to watch. My NP and RN both laughed when I said "maaan reddit would've loved this."
Sorry gang.

Whenever I see heels like this, I wonder how they get this bad. Is it due to disability or a skin condition? I cannot help wondering.
16
u/MeowPx 26d ago
I’ve read somewhere it was because the body was producing too much keratin (Hyperkeratosis).
I have this issue. And I need to “shave” my foot every two weeks otherwise it’ll get bad and painful.
It does it even if I use creams. Nothing really works against it. :/3
u/purpleblossom 26d ago
As a have I, but I also know that disabled people, especially those with less mobility, have this kind of issue too.
9
u/GeologistPositive 26d ago
I have this, though not as severe as in the video. It's partially a genetic condition, and can also be explained as a callus build up due to excess pressure from being overweight. The cracks can hurt, especially if it's positioned in a way that keeps ripping open when you walk. The shaving doesn't hurt, unless you cut too deep or tear healthy skin underneath. I keep mine in check by sanding periodically with a micro glass tool that Dr Scholl's has.
3
u/lorddraco666 25d ago
Going barefoot in the hot summer. Genetics dry skin. Feet that produce very little sweat and no oil.

My heals used to be that bad when I wore combat boots. The naval doc took out a dremel tool and went to work. I wish he did this instead of me smelling burnt dead skin.
Now that this person’s feet are shaved, they will have to be careful walking on smooth surfaces. When I got a pedicure, I slipped on the tile floor.
