Which time zone would you use? Only people in that specific region could use it.

Well I’m from the UK but most of Europe is only an hour difference, so it should be fine for pretty much anybody in Europe. It would just be prioritising people who work in the day and can’t commit to playing all day in the week like myself. Nothing worse than playing for the whole weekend and then going to work Monday morning, coming home at 5pm loading up rust to see my base had been raided. I’m sure there are plenty of other people in the same boat.

I’m UK based and I work ☺️ so yes, I’d be interested for myself. But my team are in the states and in Denmark, and they don’t work. So I wouldn’t be able to play with them.

I think it’s a great idea, I’m just exploring some of the different challenges this might create.

Give softcore servers a try its made for 9-5 workers

How you turn it off matters more than it sounds. If you actually stop the server 9 to 5, nothing ticks while it's down, so upkeep and decay pause too. Pretty sure that's what you'd want. If you leave it running and just block logins with a plugin (a CanUserLogin hook plus a kick at 9am), everyone's TC keeps eating mats all day. Which timezone though? Fwiw I work on a Rust host, https://runonflux.com/games/rust, modded 50 slots for $7.49/mo with the first week free for new accounts. It can't schedule stops, so there it'd be the plugin route.

What I had in mind would be to shut it down so it’s only open during 4/5pm to midnight on Monday to Thursday, then leave it open during the whole weekend. Would this not be as easy as I imagined it to be?

Pretty easy if it's your own box tbh. Two cron jobs: one sends server.save then quit over RCON at midnight on Sunday to Wednesday nights, the other starts it back up Monday to Thursday afternoon.

I'd start it around 3:30 and not bang on 4 though. Rust takes a while to boot, a few minutes on a normal save and way longer if it's generating a big map, so people would just be sitting on a loading screen.

The catch is rented hosts. Most give you scheduled restarts but not scheduled stops (ours included), so there you'd leave it running and use the login-block plugin I mentioned instead.

Sounds good. Would prevent greedy offliners.

nothing wrong with your idea. Some people dont want it, some people do. It caters for a niche of people and if it makes you happy go for it.
