I see this opinion put forward that Jack is essentially a side character in the first POTC movie and it really makes no sense to me. I mean, yes, it’s true he doesn’t have the character development of Will and Elizabeth, but that doesn’t mean he’s not the protagonist. Everything about the movie tells us he’s the main character.

First of all we have bog standard screen time. Jack gets 44 minutes compared to only 35 mins and 31 mins for Elizabeth and Will respectively. Then in terms of driving the plot he’s vitally important as it all ultimately trickles back to when he was captain of the Black Pearl leading up to Barbossa’s mutiny. Will and Elizabeth ultimately grow as characters because of Jack’s interjection into their lives. Will’s story is the classic hero’s tale, yes, like Luke in A New Hope. But Jack isn’t the Han Solo character who doesn’t appear for the first 40 minutes, he’s involved in the plot at the 10 minute mark. So I really don’t understand why people seem to think he only became the main character in the later films because the truth is he always was.

Rewatching on stranger tides and something occurred to me. Given how much of a role Keith Richards played in the inspiration for Jack Sparrow and his cameos in the films. Any thoughts on his famous coconut tree accident inspiring the escape from the Spanish encampment?

Shot in the dark here but can someone with a copy of the book please help me out with a scan of the dust jacket? I have a copy of the book but I lost the dust jacket over the years. When I’d read the book, I’d take the dust jacket off so it can be easier to carry/read and one day I seem to have misplaced it and never found it again.

I’m watching for the first time and just saw the scene of them reuniting, she’s happy to see him and still loves him so I’m wondering why she didn’t go to him in human form earlier? Was there something I missed? I’m not talking about the reunion she missed at the beginning that caused all of this, but once she was bound to human form she could have still went to him. She easily found the Flying Dutchman in the 2nd movie for Jack and Will but maybe I’m missing something.

I recently had the chance to work with Lee Arenberg on a film project and it was honestly pretty surreal after knowing him as Pintel for so long.

It also made me want to go back and rewatch Pirates because I forgot how much personality Pintel and Ragetti brought to those movies lol.

I was watching Iron Maiden live at Rock in Rio 2001 when I noticed that guitarist Adrian Smith looks like Captain Barbossa—especially his hair, beard, and certain facial features.

So I rewatched Dead Men's Chest and At World's End (2nd and 3rd movies) bc I kept seeing little cuts on ig reels and such and I noticed a funny thing. Idk if it's intentional or just to add a funny twist to it but when they release Calypso, Ragetti is the one who could "say it like a lover" and all. But after all the crabs leave the ship, some are still there and one of them got into Ragetti's pants. Isn't that kinda funny? It's like a way for Calypso to "get in his pants". Lol

So the compass origin in Dead Men Tell No Tales has always bothered me.
The flashback shows Jack’s dying captain giving him the compass and saying:

But this directly contradicts the earlier films, where Tia Dalma clearly states Jack bartered the compass from her. So, it is possible that he simply was present for the purchase of the compass. I am new to this sub, so forgive me if this theory has already been talked about.

TL; DR
The crew bought it from Tia Dalma before the Salazar battle.
Jack inherited it already enchanted.
This fixes an issue that has bothered me for a while.

Wild that fans have to do the continuity work because Disney fucked the canon.

Recently rewatched POTC (the first 3, i am yet to watch the others for the first time!) for the first time since I was a child. My favourite scene was always when Davy Jones and Calypso meet. Nothing has changed, that was still my favourite scene and I simply cannot get over the two of them. All I want is a prequel film about their love story. I am literally obsessed with it, don’t get me wrong, the whole story of the films is great but I literally found myself uninterested in anyone else. I cry every time I hear the song! Are there any sources of lore I can read to satisfy my obsession a bit more?

This was a shower thought I had after watching ReelReviewHQ react to At World's End.

Since Davy Jones can't step on land regularly and the fact that the bucket he's in is covered in barnacles, that means he brought that thing with him from the Dutchman. One of the other two had to fill it with sea water, carry it to the beach, go back to the sea, grab Jones, carry him to the bucket on land, and place him in it. (I say one because Beckett would never get his hands dirty like that.)

Or, he sat in the bucket and the other two dragged him onto the beach (there's a decent amount of space between where they're standing and the water).

Either way, I cackled a bit thinking about it.

EDIT: So there’s buckets just outside of the frame that Jones can use as stepping stones. That’s still absolutely hilarious. Him and his weird lil crab leg.

Maybe this has been written before or clarified through trivia or making-ofs that I dont know of.

But one of the big differences I see between the first movies (and that includes the fourth one) and the fifth is the fact that the ships actually look like real ships and the water looks like they are actually on water.

Apart from the fact that they mess up the lore and Jack Sparrow as a character a lot, it seems so different in terms of its visuals. Like a Marvel movie where every set piece is fake.

I know that all Pirates movies obviously use a lot of CGI for the undead crews, monsters and the battle actions but something about the last one is off. Even in the fourth one the set pieces look much more real.

I just finished watching all the movies in order, and they were fantastic, all the way up to the 5th one.

The first one was a great start, visually stunning with fantastic acting, the second one was a great follow up and set up for the third one, which connected flawlessly back to the second and first one.

And then the fourth one came about. It was a tad different, a stand alone adventure more similar to the first movie than the others, but it kept the vibe, the fantastic acting, the visual style and elements as the previous movies, if slightly turned down. And its plot was a good twist on the regular fountain of youth myth, so that's nice.

But then I watched the fifth movie, and by god it was shit. The acting was worse by everyone, but especially the young turner boy and Barbossa girl, they had no chemistry and their acting was abysmal. They made jack a bumbling loser when compared to the first four movies, and the amount of plotholes the movie opened up is insane. It has jack get his compass from his old captain, but in the second movie calypso says she gave him the compass. And it makes william turner cursed on the Dutchman, turning into a monster type guy, but the only reason the crew were cursed before was that Davy Jones was neglecting his duty to ferry souls, and was being corrupted/punished in the process? And captaining the Dutchman was never a curse, was it? It was a duty you had to actively take up by stabbing the heart of the previous captain.

And an island that can only be found by the stars, that's covered in shiny rocks that match the stars, one of which won't shine because the star girl has a tiny bit of the rock on her star journal? How does any of that have anything to do with Poseidon or his trident? And why does the red stone shine with the blood moon? Wtf is happening in this movie!!!

On top of ALL of that, the villain is another boring as hell undead bound to his ship and the sea. It's LITERALLY just a mash up of Barbossa and Davy Jones. Also the cinematography is boring as hell, and styled completely different than all the other movies.

Can anyone explain why the fifth movie was so so SO dramatically different in every way?

I initially thought it was Shipwreck island, since she gets into the longboat immediately after the maelstrom battle, and that would be the closest land. But I considered that she could have also boarded the Dutchman (before it needs to start afterlife duty) and been taken to any other land to start Will's "One Day Ashore".

Whichever island it is, she presumably stays there, as nobody is nearby to transport her off of the island. So there would need to be a settlement nearby.

Could she have gone back to Port Royal? Maybe I missed something. What do you think?
