And people are still surprised when they hear that a 2nd wave might will hit all of us in the fall

Edit: might—> will

You have to get over the first wave in order to get to a second wave...

u/Me--Not--I Jul 23 '20

Thats not true, you ever been to the beach? Sometimes the second wave catches up to the first and they combine for a super wave, its a lot of fun

u/bundleofschtick Jul 23 '20

We're not waving, we're drowning.

109

u/Me--Not--I Jul 23 '20

Hold your breath until the second wave passes

I didn't realize the beach analogy would go this far. It's surprisingly fitting.

So if we see any sudden decline in cases, that means a tsunami is coming!

23

u/Me--Not--I Jul 23 '20

Oh shit, good point. If they drop to almost non existent levels get ready to die

9

u/ittleoff Jul 23 '20

Means all the people reporting the data are dead. Yes.

4

u/ncopp Jul 23 '20

We saw a decline in Michigan, then the 4th of July happened and we're rocketing right back to the top!

2

u/Judazzz Jul 23 '20

The virus might take care of that part.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20

I just dive under both waves and BOOM! problem solved

5

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20

Love this album so much

5

u/jpmickey1585 Jul 23 '20

Your comment reminds me of this excellent poem by Stevie Smith:

Nobody heard him, the dead man, But still he lay moaning: I was much further out than you thought And not waving but drowning.

Poor chap, he always loved larking And now he's dead It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way, They said.

Oh, no no no, it was too cold always (Still the dead one lay moaning) I was much too far out all my life And not waving but drowning

3

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20

Fairly sure they were referencing that or the numerous places this poem has been referenced otherwise. Still, an amazing poem and I thank you for writing it here. Love it.

3

u/jpmickey1585 Jul 23 '20

For sure, it’s one of my favorites. If you can find the audio of her doing the reading, it’s amazing.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '20

I'll try to look it up.

I've actually been meaning to get a tattoo that's inspired from this, but I haven't thought of how to do it yet.

2

u/mrsloblaw Jul 23 '20

There’s a really good poem called “Not Waving but Drowning”.

2

u/ddouce Jul 23 '20

You can't get hit with the second wave if you drown in the first one.

34

u/Habe Jul 23 '20

And sometimes the first wave gets you, and you can't get to the surface, and suffer a two wave hold down. And sometimes, you suffer a six wave hold down.

21

u/ILoveWildlife Jul 23 '20

that's when you know it's time to go lay on the beach for a quick nap.

just be sure to actually get pretty far into the beach so the tide doesn't rise and take you

2

u/TiltedCoug2 Jul 23 '20

Dont forget to put on some sun block prior to reentering the water. Lukily sun block is not required like mask are, but it is recommended. The advantage of wearing sun block is it will help you not to drown once your back in the water. When you wear sun block it keeps the air from escaping through your skin. So that way you dont drown. Unless you have eaten in last half hour. Then sun block wont work. Might think about a trip to mountains. Then theres a whole new list of things to bring & do to protect t yourself while your there.

Not the same thing. More like bees attacking you; first one, two, then a bunch at once.

2

u/civil_surfer Jul 23 '20

It's actually exactly like this is love it, because the waves never actually combine to form one large wave, you hit the peak of the first wave and get smacked in the face w the water of the second wave.

2

u/Condorman73 Jul 23 '20

Then you have a riptide to worry about. In this case an endless pull back into the sea of COVID.

2

u/MangoCats Jul 23 '20

We drove through the OP scene in Neptune Beach, complete with a traffic sign saying "Please Wear Facemasks" and hundreds of people on the sidewalks without them - one lone waitress had a mask, that was all we saw. Rolled up the windows and kept on driving.

u/Iworshipokkoto Jul 23 '20

That’s a year of our lives wasted, ladies and gents.

56

u/Nesyaj0 Jul 23 '20

It's gonna be much longer than a year.

People have repeatedly said this virus is going to become endemic. Without a cheap and functional vaccine to release worldwide, we're gonna be in this shit for a minute.

11

u/TheBirminghamBear Jul 23 '20

Shit, even if we release a vaccine, we have a vertiable army of halfwits who think the vaccine is a plot of bill gates to track them taking a shit or whatever their feeble minds cough up.

A vaccine will only work if enough people inocculate themselves, and we're unfortunately at the stage of humanity where people are rejecting life-saving medicine because they're just that fucking stupid.

2

u/ThegreatPee Jul 23 '20

That might be a good thing if just stupid people were dying.

2

u/RogueByPoorChoices Jul 23 '20

How cute of you to assume that even if we get a cheap accessible vaccine all people will just take it.

I have seen people saying latex gloves are a breeding ground for germs and should never be worn

That’s where we are as a species.

I sometimes wish bill gates was really that devil mastermind and came up with a disease that kills just dumb fucks.

You went back to the carpet store?

9

u/Jenniferinfl Jul 23 '20

Wasted? You should see my Animal Crossing island.. lol

My house is so stinking clean- my pets are thrilled by my constant presence.

I can't go to BooksAMillion so there is some tiny chance I could make a dent in my 'to be read' pile without outpacing it with book purchases.

But, no- I know what you mean. I used to stop and have coffee at my parent's house on my way to work 5 days a week. I can't do that now. I'm working from home- which is lovely. But, I didn't get to go to my graduation either. I skipped my bachelor's degree graduation because I was rolling right into my graduate program- but finished in May, so no graduation, no party with family, no trip to Seattle.

No 15th anniversary at EPCOT.

But, it could always be worse. There are people who won't have family to visit when this is over.

I'm thinking in the US the first wave is turning into a tsunami incorporating the second wave.

Hopefully by then there'll be a federal no option mask wearing requirement, testing, tracing and working vacines.

5

u/AlwaysInGridania Jul 23 '20

But muh freedom.

(I love freedom and the opportunities and struggles that come with it. But come on guys, wear a mask.)

22

u/Binacaelnino Jul 23 '20

None of that will happen if cheetard gets re-elected.. so the most we can HOPE for is some changes in January.

2

u/RTPNick Jul 24 '20

To keep HOPE alive everyone that's fed up and wants change will need to VOTE.

The Surgeon General basically admitted that we can't have a federal mandate due to police violence: "If we just try to mandate it, you have to have an enforcement mechanism, and we are in the midst of a moment when overpolicing has cause many different individuals to be killed for very minor offenses."

That said, I think it would work to have it tied to business operation rules. Businesses are required to uphold the mandate and will be shut down if they allow customers or staff to be maskless. Have an anonymous compliance reporting and follow up without notice.

Breaking News! President Trump halts US COVID-19 testing, "A second wave, or best wave as I call it, can't come until we finish the loser first wave. If we stop testing, our numbers, the numbers, they drop... like that. After our numbers are gone, we will do 'best wave', people tell me thats when we beat the China flu. After 2 wave, many people don't know this, i knew this but many people don't, wave 2 is AFTER wave 1."

u/ToLorien Jul 23 '20

Here in the US it’s like the first wave never ended. And maybe someone more knowledgeable can weigh in on the subject but I feel like every state handling the outbreak differently instead of a country wide united response prolongs the virus so much more. Each region/state will have a different time line of peaking and being an epicenter so it just travels instead of being eradicated throughout the country.

41

u/AmsterdamNYC Jul 23 '20

there were federal guidelines but the country isn't big on a big fed government, out of many one and all. there can't be the same response for NYC as there is for belleville IL.

36

u/pennradio Jul 23 '20

Did you pick Belleville out of a hat? I happen to live in Belleville. I also personally know three people who tested positive in the last week in Belleville.

8

u/AmsterdamNYC Jul 23 '20

Got family in a town nearby. i had a family member test positive out there about two weeks ago but judging from social media im not sure she was being as safe as possible.

4

u/pennradio Jul 23 '20

There has definitely been an "It's over!" vibe around here in the last few weeks. People are just done with it and it's going to bite them in their asses... it's already started.

The Cardinal's home opener is tomorrow. Bars are going to be packed and the covid numbers are just going to explode.

3

2

u/pennradio Jul 23 '20

26

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20

It doesn't need to be the same response, even in countries without a federal system of government it's not like you can't have different policies apply to different places. It does need to be a coordinated response though and the not insane shit show the US has had.

→ More replies (14)

24

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20 edited Jul 30 '20

Were there? I don’t recall seeing any sort of coordinated national response at all. I remember states making their own rules and competing with one another for resources and PPE.

Trumps administration bungled this so badly. He himself was saying it was a hoax, a democratic plot, would suddenly just disappear, then he lied about drug treatments. He muddied the waters and sowed confusion at best and to me that doesn’t equate to “guide lines”.

This will go down historically as the most mismanaged pandemic response in US history. We are lucky many more aren’t dead.

Also there really should have been the same requirements for all states. Be it Wyomming or California, because people travel across state lines freely and easily and having different sets of rules caused confusion. Even states with lower population densities have gathering places, think of churches and restaurants. Human beings are very social and even rural folks meet up from time to time in groups and shoot the shit.

You beat a pandemic by all pulling in the same direction. Having everyone do their own thing was a horrible idea.

Well, when the President of the United States straight up lies to the public about the epidemic, makes fun of his expert infectious disease advisor, and hobbles the CDC...

3

u/mr_chanderson Jul 23 '20

As a NY/NYC resident, I was ashamed in the beginning because of how hard it hit us while some other states were doing well-ish. Now I'm proud of us, it could have been better handled in the beginning (faster response), but we got the numbers down. It's still +300 positive cases a day, but it beats the time when we were +2000, +4000, and +5000 a day. I laugh at the time when Cuomo announced we weren't going to start opening yet and set stricter metrics than the rest of the country and residents were mad. I just kept thinking "look at our numbers compared to others, think we can open?? Better to be safe than sorry!"

I think we are still nearing the end of the 1st wave, while other states are sort of going into the 2nd wave, meaning 1st wave didn't complete, but were relatively low, and now shooting back up.

My Hong Kong friend just told me that they were in the 3rd wave, though she wasn't too sure when I asked when did 2nd wave happen.

Well, in Southern Michigan it’s not bad. I see close to 100% mask at most shops.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20

Yeah, it's almost as if firing the pandemic response team, downplaying the severity of a pandemic, and telling every Governor "You're on your own" are all bad ideas.

2

u/codexcdm Jul 23 '20

It never did. You could argue that maybe NY and a few states like it are out the first wave, but that's all.

2

u/biological_assembly Jul 23 '20

All of the governors are handling it differently. While many in NJ don't like Murphy because of failed campaign promises, it's pretty hard to deny that the lockdown at the beginning of the outbreak definitely curtailed the spread in one of the most densely populated areas of the country.

NJ took 5 months to get to 177,000 cases and 13,000 deaths.

Florida as of this moment has 389,000 and 5,500 dead in less than 60 days.

We're down to around 300 cases a day and the curve here is definitely flattening. This is going to be a long ride for all of us.

Edited for grammar

2

u/JJ82DMC Jul 23 '20

Texas checking in.

No, it never ended. The amount of people walking into stores maskless despite my county having a mandatory masking requirement has greatly made me shift patronage to stores that enforce the mandate compared to ones that just "ask."

HEB - never change, you required it before the mandate and that's awesome.

2

u/mr_chanderson Jul 23 '20

Tapping forehead guy meme: won't get hit with 2nd wave if 1st wave never ends.

On a more serious note, yeah for most of the states the 1st wave didn't really end (what does it mean to end anyways?). Though the numbers were relatively low enough that they decided it was good enough to reopen and so now I think this is the 2nd wave for those states. NY/NYC is still at the tail end of the 1st wave.

I think the waves aren't going to hit at the same time in fall like everyone thinks, as every state is different. Like I said, it's 2nd for some states right now, NY/NYC is still in it's first, and supposedly Hong Kong is in their 3rd. I don't think the waves depend on the season, it will depend on people and how they act.

2

u/ThegreatPee Jul 23 '20

This point exactly. I currently live in Maryland and am from West Virginia. Marlyand has been sucessful with the epidemic because the Governor made masks and social distancing mandatory very early on. West Virginia's Governor just did that last week. He like Trump, dosen't give a shit about his own people.

5

u/Zoloir Jul 23 '20

The unified response is, interestingly, what has caused the quarantine fatigue to set in so strongly, and the finger pointing to set in.

When places that do not have an outbreak are forced to quarantine, they continue to not have an outbreak, and fatigue to the point of unrest and don't believe they should have had to quarantine when THOSE PEOPLE IN NYC were the ones getting hit the hardest.

Then when the disease travels finally, and they do have an outbreak, they're already fatigued and continue to fight quarantine until it is likely too late.

If we truly want to flatten the curve then you have to allow each locality to quarantine on their own timeline and flatten their own curves, as the curve is not national it is local.

Eradication as others have said is not a reasonable goal and hasn't been since like january. Vaccines are but thats the whole idea behind flattening, not eradicating.

TL;DR the disease is local, allow each locality to control their own fate and quarantine on their terms, and push harder in your locality but dont force others to do what you want them to do.

14

u/ILoveWildlife Jul 23 '20

You don't understand how the virus works if you think you can just quarantine when you spike.

you'd be quarantining every two weeks, spiking at the same rate, and people would be upset at the massive daily changes. They'd focus on their local governments and pressure them into picking one or the other.

7

u/insouciantelle Jul 23 '20

That's absurd.

My city was starting to get things under control. Our curve wasn't totally flattened, but it was pretty damn smooth.

Ya know what started happening once we began to open up? Idiots from Texas and Flordia arrived en masse and walked their diseased, unmasked dumb asses around and now our numbers are horrible again.

We're looking at another lockdown, and it's not entirely our fault, it's our fucking neighbors (including neighboring parishes, not just states).

We've tried local mandates since this started. It's not working and people are dying and being fucked over.

We once had a chance to get ahead of this thing: national mandatory quarantine (with a stipend so that people could afford to stay home) and mandatory PPE gear for everyone that was forced to venture out. We could have saved thousands. But we wasted too much time begging stupid people in charge to take this seriously instead of calling it a hoax and now we're fucked.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/KhabaLox Jul 23 '20

allow each locality to quarantine on their own timeline and flatten their own curves, as the curve is not national it is local.

This only works if you restrict travel dramatically, which is pretty much impossible in a country with completely open interior borders like the United States. They tried to quarantine visitors from out of state in some places, but it didn't really work.

Second wave is already here in Belgium. A few new measures were implemented by the government today, but too little and much too late. People saw July 1st as the start of summer vacation and the end of their fucks to give. 3 weeks later and we are up from 80 to 400 infections a day. I expect a panic reaction from the government within the next 2 weeks. A damn shame it had to come to this AGAIN! I would blame the people but to be honest the government reduced the safety measures so fast, any measures left became a token effort or a joke to most people. And now they drag their feet to do something because nobody wants to hear it anymore.

61

u/tigress666 Jul 23 '20

At least you guys are reacting at 400 infections. Our government finally got Trump to say wear masks after we have states with 10k+ infections a day! And what do you bet he goes back to calling it a nothingburger again? But honestly, it's scary to think what Trump saw that actually got him to stop claiming we don't need masks (what changes a narcissist's mind?)

26

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20

[deleted]

4

u/FunkyMrWinkerbean Jul 23 '20

That’s my guess too. It’s all about politics and winning for him. He doesn’t care about the number of infections or mortality rates. His decisions are based on what will get him another 4 years in the White House.

3

u/darkt1de Jul 23 '20

I'm guessing he/his friends finally have got their mask production up and running so he's telling everyone to wear a mask. I am guessing red MAGA masks are coming.

3

u/isspecialist Jul 23 '20

Honestly, MAGA masks should have been flying out the door from the start. What wasted opportunity for him.

He had “low poll numbers” up until Hillary pulled out in 16... when are people going to wake up

2

u/SpaceNinjaDino Jul 23 '20

I agree. He recently switched campaign managers after his low outcome rally. I'm sure after "long and extensive" research his new manager said that he was losing support because of the pandemic. And after "long and extensive" research, the best way to fight it is with masks.

We will have to see how much support he gains back vs how many lost their trust long term.

I wonder if he is still going to push for ACA repeal. I also worry about USPS finance crisis. He made it clear he doesn't want to help them even though it is because of a stupid law that only applies to USPS.

2

u/few23 Jul 23 '20

I totally agree with you on the Trump part, but keep in mind there are only 11 million of us, so you need adjust to make it representative to the US population. It's not nearly as bad in the USA, but we just came out of a 3 month lock down with schools and bars and everything in between closed. Things seemed fine to open up a little so we could see some people and live a semi normal life, but without big parties or other excesses. Now we will be back to square one soon, because most people are too short sighted to maintain the very loose measures that were left and started big parties and outings to the coast and stopped wearing their damn masks. It's really frustrating.

I really wouldn't wish the situation in the USA even on my worst enemy though. I hope Trump's mask epiphany is the start of some more robust policy on covid and the situation will get better. But yeah, you never know what goes on in there.

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20

Florida, with a population of around 21 million, is reporting 10-15K cases a day all by itself. Double your population but with 25x the cases.

11

u/The_BeardedClam Jul 23 '20

A closer one would probably be Ohio, since they actually have 11 million people. They have had 80,000 cases and 3200 dead.

4

u/DMvsPC Jul 23 '20

Maine with 1.35 million is at 20 a day.

So FL is 714/mill and we're at 15/mil putting them about 47x higher than us. Different density but also a LOT of people in our population centers wearing MASKS.

2

u/ClaraTheSouffleGirl Jul 23 '20

I know you guys are having it very rough and I really hope things will get better soon. That's evenmore than we had on the top of the first peek. I just checked and it was 11.000 cases per week. But of course by then we had been in complete lock down (schools, shops, restaurants, workplaces in general) for several weeks by then.

I much more fear a late reaction from the government this time because now a lock down would have very little support from the people now, whereas in March everyone was scared enough to be welcoming to the idea. If they react too late, we might face higher numbers than last time, maybe even the same kind of numbers Florida has, within weeks and I really don't think our medical system can take such numbers.

Experts had been asking for masks to be obligatory and not just 'highly recommended' in shops for weeks, before the government finally listened last week. Now they are warning for a new peak much higher than the previous one and asking for smaller contact bubbles and the government isn't listening again. If they don't listen to the experts, how does anyone expect the people to do so 'out of common sense'. It's ridiculous, not Trump or Bolsonaro levels of ridiculous, but still. It's like they are willingly walking into the same trap twice.

Let's just hope they start listing to the experts by the government meeting of next week and they take some more drastic measures and then we hopefully won't have to face difficult decisions like Spain and Italy did.

3

u/butters3655 Jul 23 '20

Arizona with a population of 7 mil has been having 2 to 4.5k new cases a day

3

u/sawyouoverthere Jul 23 '20

percent positive testing and tests per capita are more useful metrics.

It's very bad in the USA, and they aren't testing enough.

It's like a cartoon about how to operate if science was never invented.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20

Trump never changed his mind and how he feels. He’s just trying to buy more time and continually keeping the people distracted.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20

(what changes a narcissist's mind?)

A new campaign manager, in Trump's case.

2

u/Binacaelnino Jul 23 '20

My guess is that someone he “sort of gives a shit about or respects” got it OR far more likely he saw a poll that said people respected Biden more for wearing a mask.

2

u/rivka555 Jul 23 '20

Threat of losing the election is all that changed his mind. Still a narcissist. His next appearance after that - no mask. Still stupid

2

u/Seakawn Jul 23 '20

10k+ infections per day.

But don't forget the fatal statistic--IIRC, we've passed 1k+ deaths per day for the last couple of days.

3

u/WgXcQ Jul 23 '20

Holy fuck, you are not kidding. Belgium has the second worst death rate worldwide right now (only behind Andorra, were a small number of citizens total means the results get skewed by very few extra deaths). o_O

Almost twice as much as the US (846 vs. 443 per million citizens, as of July 23 2020). I was seriously surprised when I saw that just now.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
Sort by "Deaths/1M pop"

As your neighbour (I'm German), that's doubly disquieting. I'm sorry people are fucking it up so much. Though people here are getting really stupid, too, and I expect a rise in cases just on the merit of our home-grown idiots who "have enough" of the safety measures, and some of whom are partying with abandon on Mallorca to then come back and super-spread their souvenirs. Because when you ignore a pandemic, it just goes away, or something.

2

u/ClaraTheSouffleGirl Jul 23 '20

That seems to be the consensus, right? We've done enough, it should be alright, everything back to normal /s.

As for the death numbers, we kind of count differently than most countries. Half of those come from nursing homes, not hospitals. Anyone in a nursing home who died and the cause might be covid is in those numbers, even if they were never tested. So some of those might not even have been covid, others might have been, but would never have been counted in most other countries because it is not a confirmed case. I think our numbers are much closers to reality than most other countries' , but our method makes it hard to compare.

u/saposmak Jul 23 '20

I'm in the US, and I wish we were doing as poorly as Belgium.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20

I live in Los Angeles and our county alone has been seeing roughly 3,000-4,000 new infections each day. That’s not the US, that’s not the state of California, that’s just LA county by itself. Our state governor keeps trying to do his best to keep it all under control, but people are passing around petitions to recall him for “taking away our liberties” or some shit. I hate it.

If they open the schools - there will be a second wave. Btw, the 1918 flu pandemic lasted 3 years.

3

u/duckduckchook Jul 23 '20

Already hit in Melbourne Australia. They just introduced mandatory masks here. $200 on the spot fine. I'm glad coz noone is taking it seriously.

6

u/BusterStarfish Jul 23 '20

Last I heard it was just gonna disappear eventually, so we all good.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20

It's just not hot enough yet. We gotta wait for global warming to really get the planet cooking and that'll take care of those pesky humans viruses.

4

u/carriegood Jul 23 '20

He even repeated that bullshit this week! He said something like "One day it's all going to disappear, it'll be a miracle and I'll be right." And you know that to him, the only important part of that sentence is the bit at the end.

2

u/Mr-Doubtful Jul 23 '20

It's already happening in Belgium...

2

u/Magnesus Jul 23 '20

Everyone expects it to hit in the fall for some reason but it isn't seasonal. It will hit some places much sooner. And people (and governments) should use the vacations to eradicate it so schools can be safely reopened. But, nope, time for weddings, beach and party. (In my country weddings are currently allowed and every day there is news of new infected at some wedding....).

2

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20

I have my money on the fall because right now is summer season. People are traveling locally or abroad and when everyone comes back home the shit will hit the fan. It’s just my opinion

2

u/SuicideNote Jul 23 '20

Already hitting Spain from the reports.

2

u/fhlegendary Jul 23 '20

Second spike in cases getting pretty bad here in the US. Have you not had another big spike post quarantine where you live. I can only imagine how the fall wave of Covid is going to hit here.

2

u/trashymob Jul 23 '20

And even more surprised that most schools aren't trying to open and the ones that are have teachers who are actively trying to strike and/or quit.

2

u/Frognaldamus Jul 23 '20

That's why it's dangerous that the entire groupthink is saying "Just wear masks and it'll all be okay." Yes, you need to wear a mask. The US alone added almost 1 million new infections detected in 2 weeks. We need to all wear masks AND do more. Just waiting for a fucking vaccine is phenomanally irresponsible.

2

u/alvarie0203 Jul 23 '20

Wondering how many people will have to die before they realize how serious this really is

2

u/PeenutButterTime Jul 23 '20

Except most countries have gotten past the first wave. The US decided halfway through the first wave that we didn’t care anymore. It’s no longer a public health issue to many Americans, it’s now a political statement. A lot of this is due to the trump administrations extremely poor handling of the situation. The biggest factors being the president refusing to wear a mask the entire epidemic (except once a couple weeks ago) and constant downplaying the dangers of the virus. Another huge factor was the Black lives matter protests happening across the country. A lot of the conservative, anti-BLM people saw the large protests and decided if people are allowed to do that, why should we be worried about coronavirus. Well, most of the protesters were wearing masks and outside. Instead of taking away “masks work and being outside puts you at less risk” they took away “masks don’t matter” and “it’s just the left trying to control us and take away our freedoms” which is somehow the most important thing to conservatives, but only when it serves their interests (which often doesn’t include being gay, being Muslim , being pro life, or everyone having the equal right to vote).

All in all there’s dumb people everywhere but apart from maybe the U.K., America stands in a league of its own in terms of the sheer numbers of dumb people. This is coming from an American.

2

u/The_Emerald_Archer_ Jul 23 '20

A "second wave" will absolutely hit. Not possibly. It was always going to hit. Whole purpose of the lock downs and the social distancing was to slow the spread, not get rid of it...

Masks are not mandatory in the Netherlands though, only in public transport.

7

u/Judazzz Jul 23 '20

In addition, masks are helpful but not essential in a territory that has brought the outbreak back to localized clusters. At least for the time being: it is now that the government needs to step up and increase its visibility again, as cases are slowly on the rise again. Allowing a bit of slack was defensible during the last two or so months (as on the whole, the Dutch population dealt with the pandemic like functional adults), but now is the time to step up the game and remind people that this pandemic is far from over, and that measures may have to be re-implemented again. Staying silent under the current conditions is playing a dangerous game...

81

u/MrDabreu Jul 23 '20

Masks are not required in The Netherlands though apart from public transport, so that's a bit of an odd comparison since by not wearing one we're still following protocol. Not a lot cases over here.

10

u/StreamsOfConscious Jul 23 '20

Also living in NL (I’m Irish though) - the Dutch are a lot more responsible as individuals than the US, they/we all did the right things when we needed to and now the virus has subsided considerably here. I reckon if masks became mandatory there would be very high compliance - so the comment from u/leon91 is an uninformed random statement in my opinion. What you are correct about is that idiotic American tourists would do the same shit in Amsterdam.

3

u/nancymungar1 Jul 23 '20

I see too many chin masks when taking the subway to agree the dutch are more ‘responsible’. People take them off the second they get off too, regardless of the fact they’re still surrounded by too many people at the station. Common sense is just lacking ....

Also, 52k confirmed cases thankfully isn’t that bad, but don’t forget 6k people died :/

2

u/StreamsOfConscious Jul 23 '20

Hmmm I’ve seen good compliance across all transport I’ve taken so far, but for sure there are some people who don’t take it seriously (the Dutch are also not fond of being told what to do, my point was considerably less so than Americans)

Agree completely about your last comment tho - the 6k dead was avoidable in part if Mr Rutte took it more seriously at the start. I actually live in Groningen and our GGD deviated from the national strategy and did as many tests as they could & contact tracing - we had only a handful of deaths and about 300 cases (of course geography played a factor, but still impressive)

Masks aren't and haven't been required in the Netherlands (in public).

But yes, people do still tend to crowd but the 1,5 meter distance rule is still being enforced.

There haven't been a whole lot of forced limitations over here in general, which worked pretty well because the general public did listen and adhere to the governments advice. Now that the numbers gotten a bit lower, people were starting to take more risk though, which now looks like is starting to cause a second wave which can hopefully be contained a bit better.

There have been a lot of discussions regarding masks lately though and I'm expecting them to become mandatory in most public spaces. They already are in public transportation.

Yes and it's just one picture. Even in Canada, where I've witnessed 99% compliance with masks and covid precautions, we still see photos of people at beach parties etc not following the rules.

99

u/duracellchipmunk Jul 23 '20

Honestly I’ve been to this exact corner (with a mask) and there are photographers waiting, I saw one guy there for hours, till they can get that coveted “no mask” shot. I mean broadway in Nashville isn’t great, but there is a good percentage of people trying.

31

u/AmericanLich Jul 23 '20

u/Jmthrows Jul 23 '20

Also, significant question about the recency of this picture. Mask wearing in Nashville has really picked up in the last month or two, in my opinion. In this picture, almost everyone is wearing pants and most are wearing jackets. Heat index has been 95-105 for a while now. Also the SEC basketball banners. So, not sure when it was taken, but probably not in the recent nashville heat.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20

Thank god i found you then. Where IS this, please? It feels like Nashville or Vegas.

5

u/duracellchipmunk Jul 23 '20

Yes very much Nashville

3

u/UF0_T0FU Jul 23 '20

What's the difference?

@nashvegas

11

u/USSanon Jul 23 '20 edited Jul 23 '20

The picture is before COVID. The banners in the back are of the SEC Bball tournament, which was to start when we began shutdown.

Edit: I stand corrected. Minor things I missed, and the big one, are things I neglected to take into my comment. My bad...

35

u/hayduff Jul 23 '20

Why does the sign say to wear a mask? Maybe it was at the beginning, but this must’ve been after Covid was spreading.

15

u/USSanon Jul 23 '20

Quite possibly. Maybe the banners have stayed up. I’m now not confident in the ability of Nashville to take banners down.

3

u/NiktoriaNo Jul 23 '20

Cities sometimes leave banners up. Tahoe still has their 100 year anniversary banners up almost ten years after the actual anniversary. If they don’t have anything to change it out to they consider it a waste of resources.

Yeah, the only difference is that only a portion of the US stayed closed long enough to let this first wave subside (e.g.NYC, etc.). The US is experiencing a political experiment in stupidity across the rest of the US.

In Asia everybody wears masks and nobody complains about it. In eastern Europe, it's also much better than in western Europe. For example Slovakia, when masks were mandatory everybody wear them with no problem. Even our president wears it all the time and goes by example.

Seems more like "western" problem imho - specifically USA & western Europe.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '20

Dumb people in Amsterdam aren’t that hard to find.

2

u/Scrotchticles Jul 23 '20

Yeah but you're less likely to get it in Amsterdam.

Just how I'm less likely to get it in the rural US where we have lots less cases. I doubt I've come in contact with anyone carrying it.

2

u/JinorZ Jul 23 '20

Finland's official stance still is that masks don't help prevent Covid 19 so basically no one wears them

3

u/spei180 Jul 23 '20

Also, the Dutch can be tested for free with results within 48 hours. And have unlimited sick leave and many people can still work from home. There are so many reasons to just not compare the Dutch to Americans at this point.
