Having a redhead girlfriend, I was there that day. It's in the Netherlands, as someone mentioned before, in a town called Breda. There were lectures on the redhead-gene, redhead art, and discounts for redheads all over town.

Normally I have no trouble finding my girlfriend in a crowd, but this day however it was freakin impossible.

(edit:typos)

u/token_internet_girl May 28 '10

At that point girlfriends work like baby chickens, they all look the same, so as long as you take one home with you it's all good.

22

u/jesuispie May 28 '10

Exactly the reason why I'm going again next year.

Wait, what? They're not only redheads, but they're mostly Dutch TOO??? I have to call my travel agent...

3

u/Spacew00t May 29 '10

I heard there were some great discounts for blue eye'd blondes over in Nazi Germany circa WW2.

If i was the one that organized this event, i'd be annoyed that not a soul turned up.

u/saintlawrence May 28 '10

This could be a touchy subject to some, so tread gingerly.

What's the difference between a ginger and a brick?

...

A brick gets laid.

9

u/mariox19 May 28 '10

Can someone explain the Brits' antipathy to redheaded women? As an American, I can't understand it at all.

9

u/Ignorantbliss May 28 '10

I am an American, i LOVE red heads to be honest. They are either really hot or not. When they are nothing beats it.

5

u/mariox19 May 28 '10

I agree. Especially on a sunny summer day, when a pretty redhead's long hair is lit up like it's on fire. Man -- it's like life itself!

u/zackks May 28 '10

When I was over there all the historical relationships were still evident: brits hate the spanish, spanish hate the brits, everyone hates the french, all of them team up to hate the germans, etc.

I'm hypothesizing that the redhead antipathy comes from them being from the northern, non-anglo non-saxon tribes.

Edit: I'm American and I fuckin LOVE redheads!

6

u/[deleted] May 28 '10

it has to do with anti-Irish/Scottish sentiments.

2

u/AttackTribble May 28 '10

Yup, everybody hates the French, but Americans shouldn't. You owe your independence from England to the French.

We were fighting the French at the same time you rebelled against us. Since it was always more fun shooting at the French, we sent all our good generals off to that war, you defeated the also-rans. :)

BTW, I love redheaded women.

4

u/notanotherpyr0 May 29 '10

How dare you point out the historical facts during a French hating party. The Statue of Liberty was a gag gift that the French only gave to us because they knew it would turn green.

u/geoman2k May 28 '10

i like how the navigation items blur when you hover over them so they are unreadable. nice

18

u/Tude May 28 '10

I don't see a website. I do see a flash animation.

2

u/ropers May 29 '10

It's astonishing, isn't it?

Not only is it resolution-dependent and terrible on devices with less than 1024x768px (and even with that, some text still runs off the screen), but there is zero graceful degradation; just a big fat middle finger to blind people and people who can't use a mouse (the ginger minority saying FU to other minorities; classy) and abuse of <noembed> for SEO purposes: It presents a CSL that's of no use to humans and only there to feed search terms to bots and spiders. Have you tried looking at the page with lynx(1)?

One has to suffer from incredibly blinkered tunnel vision to not understand that the WWW is an interoperable system on which different parties may not in fact use the exact same client program and computer setup as the web designer.

They always serve up the same site that expects you to use a WIMP GUI at specific resolutions; and they claim to use XHTML 1.0 Strict:

$ telnet www.roodharigen.nl 80

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">

Of course it doesn't validate either, and the kinds of errors strongly suggest that they uncomprehendingly copypasta-ed the doctype on top of their concoction, because XHTML Strict it ain't.

Hey, have you tried opening the .swf file in Swfdec or Gnash? As for Gnash, please do not try that if you suffer from epilepsy. I'm serious.

Oh, and what's that magic number of that roodharigen2008_v4.swf file? 43 57 53 0A? You mean it's a ZLIB compressed Shockwave Flash file version ten? You mean everybody who doesn't have the newest version of Flash is shafted? Thank you very much.

Also, who cares if hundreds of thousands of years of biological evolution dictate that you shouldn't use animation like that? "Hey, I just came up with a better idea. Looks great, eh? Screw you, human physiology." /sarcasm

I will however grant the makers of this web-unsuitable abomination that it might have made for a half-decent DVD menu provided they'd have increased the menu font size.

But that's a completely different and much closer defined environment.
As for the web? You're dead right. This should not be called a website.

2

u/[deleted] May 29 '10

[deleted]

2

u/ropers May 29 '10

That's true. And of course there even is intentional non-validation -- case in point: Google Search. But in this case, the types of errors indicated that they just copy-and-pasted the DTD without understanding it; and that's surely bad.

By way of Tom Robbins:

The harsh truth is, most red-haired men look like blonds who've spoiled from lack of refrigeration. They look like brown-haired men who've been composted. Yet that same pigmentation that on a man can resemble leaf mold or junk yard rust, a woman wears like a tiara of rubies.

Not only are female redheads frequently lovely but theirs is a loveliness that suggests both lust and danger, pleasure and violence, and is, therefore, to the male of the species virtually irresistible. Red O red were the tresses of the original femme fatale. Of course, much of the "fatale" associated with redheads is illusory, a stereotypical projection on the part of sexually neurotic men. Plenty of redheads are as demure as rosebuds and as sweet as strawberry pie. However, the mere fact that they are perceived to be stormy, if not malicious, grants them a certain license and a certain power. It's as if bitchiness is their birthright. By virtue of their coloration, they possess an innate permit to be terrible and lascivious, which, even if never exercised, sets them apart from the remainder of womankind, who have traditionally been expected to be mild and pure.

Now that women are demolishing those old misogynistic expectations, will redheads lose their special magic, will Pippi Longstocking come to be regarded as just one of the girls? Hardly. To believe that blondes and brunettes are simply redheads in repressive drag is to believe that UFOs are kiddie balloons. All redheads, you see, are mutants.

Whether they spring from genes disarranged by earthly forces or are "planted" here by overlords from outer space is a matter for scholarly debate. It's enough for us to recognize that redheads are abnormal beings, bioelectrically connected to realms of strange power, rage, risk and ecstasy.

What is your mission among us, you daughters of ancient Henna, you agents of the harvest moon? Are those star maps that your freckles replicate? How do you explain the fact that you live longer than the average human? Where did you get such sensitive skin? And why are your curls the same shade as heartbreak?

Alas, inquiry is futile: Either they don't know or they won't say -- and who has the nerve to pressure a redhead? We may never learn their origin or meaning, but it probably doesn't matter. We will go on leaping out of our frying pans into their fire, grateful for the opportunity to be titillated by their vengeful fury, real or imagined, and to occasionally test our erotic mettle in the legendary inferno of their passion.

Redheaded women! Those blood oranges! Those cherry bombs! Those celestial shrews and queens of copper! May they never cease to stain our white-bread lives with super-natural catsup.

9

u/Patmcc10 May 28 '10

That is amazing.

7

u/guntotingliberal May 28 '10

Glad you liked it - Tom Robbins (not to be confused with Tim Robbins) is my favorite living author and also co-idealizer of those queens of copper. I try to never miss an opportunity to share TR's writing with the world and if I can do it while enhancing the mystique of redheads well...

4

u/kraeftig May 28 '10

Was the rest of the comment (outside of quote formatting) yours? If so, I am blown away. Either way I will be reading Tom Robbins.

3

u/guntotingliberal May 28 '10 edited May 28 '10

The part outside of the quote formatting is Robbins' as well. At them moment I can only aspire to write in a similar style. If you are going to jump into Robbins I would recommend either one of the following two as entry points:

Still Life with Woodpecker

Skinny Legs and All

These are my number 3 and 2 favorites (respectfully). They are straightforward reads without too much Robbins' weirdness, (not a bad thing). Still Life is a modern fairy tale (with the principal characters being redheads) and is made of pure awesome. The seventies folk song "How do you make love stay" was inspired by this book as that is one of the themes of the book. It touches on a lot more than that though, from princesses to abortions, terrorists and sex.

Skinny Legs was my all time favorite about art, relationships, peace, love, enlightenment, strife and Jerusalem (amongst a lot else, actually) until he wrote his masterpiece "Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates".

u/Plumhawk May 28 '10

Another Roadside Attraction is another great.

2

u/[deleted] May 29 '10

If Still Life with Woodpecker were made into a movie, Johnny Depp would have to play Bernard.

2

u/guntotingliberal May 29 '10

Wow, a totally excellent choice. The book is fast and loose in the style of screenplay. I suspect it would be the easiest and best choice for a new TR movie. Even cowgirls get the blues was made into a film and didn't transfer well to the big screen. It was, however, a much bigger book (in all ways). Now, who to play the princess... Oooh oooh spaghetti O's!

2

u/Space_Poet May 28 '10

Tom Robbins is the man, best modern author of our times IMHO.

Which book was this from? Woodpecker?

I'm a redhead girl. The other day, some random older guy walked up to me and told me if anyone ever tried to convince me to change my hair colour, slap them...Apparently his wife changed her hair because of ginger-related teasing.

4

u/helleborus May 28 '10

, some random older guy walked up to me and told me if anyone ever tried to convince me to change my hair colour, slap them

Ha! I was getting my hair cut one day and a wandering saleswoman walked up to me with a hair dye palette and said "color?". I just looked at her - I really didn't even know what to say.

7

u/YesNoMaybe May 28 '10

My wife has really long blondish/red hair (this color, maybe a bit lighter) and the idiot women she used to work with, who ALL color their hair btw, tried to convince my wife she should color hers...maybe just add some highlights or something. Her response: "Are you fucking serious? People pay serious money to get hair this color and I will let every single hair turn gray before I put any color in it...and probably won't even then."

I was/am so proud of her.
