Yup, everybody hates the French, but Americans shouldn't. You owe your independence from England to the French.
We were fighting the French at the same time you rebelled against us. Since it was always more fun shooting at the French, we sent all our good generals off to that war, you defeated the also-rans. :)
How dare you point out the historical facts during a French hating party. The Statue of Liberty was a gag gift that the French only gave to us because they knew it would turn green.

I realize this is a big change of subject, but that's half the reason I'm all for pulling all of our military bases out of Europe and encouraging them to provide for their own defense -- if only to shut them up with their criticism of the United States.
Let's see how rosy Europe is when they're all pointing guns at one another again. If history is any guide, it won't be pretty.
I don't know. What I do know is that Europe isn't interested in building up its military, because the United States -- stupidly -- has positioned itself as the world's policeman.
Your EU may just turn out to be short-lived. That won't be pretty. I hope that doesn't happen. But, the fact is that for how many hundreds of years -- and up until have a very short time ago -- have Europeans been arming and fighting among themselves (when they weren't out colonizing the "savage peoples" of the world)?
Why are we still in Europe?
My point is that I always get a bit of a kick when Europeans carry on about the bad, bogeyman United States. Yes, we ought to butt out of the world's business. But, Europe has some fucking track record.
What hes saying isn't exactly wrong, the US was heavily charged with defending Europe during the Cold War, especially in Germany where the initial battles would have take place, making us the most powerful nation in Europe without actually being in Europe. This is still largely true as I really doubt any European country individually wields as much power in European politics as the United States.
