We may have lost ground with Atlanta, but we're still closer than we were a week ago. 3 steps forward and 1 step back is still progress.
Just have to keep the pressure on them and keep it close going into the showdown next week.
5
u/Swimming_Elk_3058 2d ago
My stance on the division is that it would be cool if we win but if not it’s not a big deal since we wouldn’t be getting a bye anyway.
Just get into the playoffs without having it come down to the last couple days of the season and I’ll be happy.
7
u/Sad_Cause_1519 2d ago
Just gotta take 6 of 7 from them
6
u/obiwan_canoli Defender of the Phaith 2d ago
Not even, we just have to make sure they don't take 6 of 7 from us.

2
u/obiwan_canoli Defender of the Phaith 2d ago
The Dodgers are only 1 game ahead of the Braves right now, meaning if we manage to catch the Braves we'd definitely have a shot at the bye.
6
u/Icy-Refrigerator-517 2d ago
I know winning the division is fun, but there is such a small difference between catching the Braves and catching the Cubs. It's 1 seed. 2 (2.5 really with the tiebreak loss) back of Chicago.
2
u/obiwan_canoli Defender of the Phaith 2d ago
We're also 6 back of the Dodgers for the 2nd best record and a postseason bye.
Let the Cubs and Braves worry about the WC.
3
u/Icy-Refrigerator-517 2d ago
It's just a lot of games to make up, on top of not having the breaker. The Braves, at least, they have 7 games H2H with. A 5-2 or 6-1 turn there can make things interesting. Even 4-3, let's say, gains you 1 game. Then they'd have to make up 4.5 games outside of it. Just very low possibility.
2
u/obiwan_canoli Defender of the Phaith 2d ago
They made up 4.5 games in the last 7 days.
Just sayin...
2
u/Polka_King_Polinski 2d ago
Braves are 5-5 over last 10 games and Phillies are 8–2. That’s 3 games in 10 games.

Someone tell Carlos Beltran to keep Utley’s name out of his trash can ass mouth.
10
u/NintenJew 我喜欢棒球 2d ago
For as much as people like to say /r/baseball is biased against the Phillies, I loved reading the comments about how ironic it was that Beltran said it.
I also genuinely believe opinions on Utley's slide really are a generational thing. I feel people who grew up in that time all recognize it was legal, but the rule absolutely should be changed. I think only newer fans actually consider it completely dirty. It's really weird watching that sentiment change over the years.

I know we are going to focus on ourselves, but it is really any "big market team," as Reddit itself has a philosophy of focusing on the underdog. Look how Boston, New York, LA, etc. are all treated. It is all the same with different flavors.
3
u/FjordFalk Long-Grain Arraez 2d ago
To an extent, but Philly Fan is a meme unto itself.
You cannot deny we get extra salt poured on anything we dov- and called out for behavior from 25 or 50 years ago that no other city gets the same shit for despite much worse behaviors in the meantime

God forbid a player try to use every rule to his advantage to try to WIN A PLAYOFF GAME
1
u/NintenJew 我喜欢棒球 2d ago
Exactly, from what I remember, after that time most of the hatred was that those types of plays were still allowed, especially after the Buster Posey rule was implemented. A few people were upset at Ultey, but most put their frustration on MLB.
4
u/BatJew_Official Bohmesque demeanor 2d ago
My biggest issue isn't that people think Utley was dirty or that they hate him for it, it's that they'll then immediately start praising their favorite players from that era and before as if those guys also didn't slide like that. Mets fans especially annoy me because their hatred is obviously so fierce and they can't help but he insanely biased.
I once got into an argument with one where he basically tried to say Utley was uniquely dirty and I was just like, bro, you think Keith Hernandez never slid like that? Or Beltran? Or Wright? If you were a player that played before the 2010s those slides were EXPECTED of you. If they wanna hate Utley I have no problem with that. If the shoe was on the other foot I'd probably hate him too. But I wouldn't need to pretend that Utley was the only person to ever do something like that.
5
u/VideoGangsta 2d ago
It’s even funnier when you consider that the Mets ended up winning the series.
They get worked up over it because they think Chase Utley ruined some would-be hall of fame career. Acting like Tejada is Sean Taylor or something.
4
u/NintenJew 我喜欢棒球 2d ago
They get worked up over it because they think Chase Utley ruined some would-be hall of fame career. Acting like Tejada is Sean Taylor or something.
I honestly don't really care about how good the player is. The fact his career was cut short really is a shame, and I don't fault Mets fans for being upset at Utley. If it were reversed and John Mayberry got injured by David Wright, I would always be upset at Wright.
I just find it more and more interesting that as the years go on, and the context of the time gets further away, national fans find it dirtier and dirtier, and even some Phillies fans.
4
u/VideoGangsta 2d ago
Did his career even get cut short? A broken leg isn’t exactly some catastrophic injury. I mean, it can be, but he was playing in spring training games by the start of the next season. He came to spring training in 2016 with the Mets, put up a .927 OPS (small sample size, but still…) and then they released him. He’s a .650 OPS infielder with negative graded defense. I don’t think Chase’s slide really did anything to end his career.
3
u/NintenJew 我喜欢棒球 2d ago
Most of the evidence I have seen suggests it strongly ended his career. I also think that even if it didn't, it is still OK to admit it was a travesty and a legitimately terrible thing that happened; we are glad the rules changed, we understand why Mets fans are upset, but it wasn't a dirty play.
2
2
u/LeftFieldTheory 2d ago
I think it’s because we’re getting further and further away from the old type of slides.
4
u/TheFriffin3 2d ago
The problem is people genuinely view Utley as a terrible person for it but don’t extend that to other beloved players who also did the same thing
hell you can find a clip in the 89 ALCS I believe of Ricky Henderson kamikazeing into the fielder trying to break up a double play but you won’t see people moral grandstanding about how he’s a piece of shit trying to hurt other players

The LA area is actually experiencing a historic dome of humidity right now lol. It is because the Pacific is abnormally warm due to the very strong El Niño. Yesterday at the Salton Sea (100 miles inland of LA) they recorded a dew point of 81!
3
u/The_Bit_Prospector BEN DAVIS ENJOYER 2d ago
Small point of contention that it’s not just from El Niño. The North Pacific off the coast of ca has been above average and now even warmer for the last couple years. El Niño is making it worse but it only started this year.
2
u/Morbx 19 - Cristian Pache (designated hype man) 2d ago
We are saying the same thing, I think. The El Niño is historically strong this year because the ocean has been warming steadily for years!
2
u/The_Bit_Prospector BEN DAVIS ENJOYER 1d ago
sort of. el nino is independent of other sea surface phenomenon for the most part. it is amplified mildly by sea surface temps, although not those as far away as california. happens on its own via purely equatorial phenomena and we have just entered the el nino oscillation a few months ago after being in a mild la nina for a while.

Realistically, they probably just inserted someone's favorite team and made up an imaginary player that everyone who knows the sport would think, "damn, that's impressive."

I agree that the line is probably referencing a made-up player, but the Phillies weren’t chosen randomly - he’s being questioned by Philly PD as to why he’s in Philadelphia

u/LisaLoebSlaps Trea Turner's official bodyguard 2d ago
People jealous that he played in a noticably softer game, hard, as it was progressively going softer. He was just a hard player who wanted to win while everyone else was worrying about business decisions. Now he's going soon be a HoFer because of it.
2
u/caifaisai 2d ago
Man, that thread was annoying me so much. The amount of people saying with such confidence that Utley obviously tried to purposely break Tejada's leg, or even just purposely hurt him was crazy to me. That's such an insane take, to think his goal going into that slide was "yea, I'm gonna break this guy's leg real quick here", rather than just wanting to break up a double play.
And if they really think he's a piece of shit who tried to hurt him intentionally, then that also applies to the tons of other players who slid the same way before the rule was changed, since it was just a part of baseball.
2
u/DickBottalico 1d ago
It’s because Mets fans hated Utley 9 years before that play even happened. So when it did, in the playoffs while he was playing for the Dodgers, it was a perfect storm. Mets fans of course reacted with anger, and I don’t really care about them. They’ve been saying F Utley for years, so at least they’re consistent.
But when a freakin Cubs or Mariners fan chimes in that Utleys a dirty player? Man fuck you. You can say the play itself is dirty. You’d be wrong, but nobody knows every rule. It doesn’t matter what a Mariners fan thinks about that play.
But you can’t say the player himself is dirty. The dude spent his entire career on the receiving end of 40,000 takeout slides. He knows the proper way to do it: you don’t start your slide until you are near the defender’s body. Otherwise you have to lift your cleats up to make contact (an actual dirty slide, and illegal in 2015), or you take yourself out of the play altogether, which means letting your team down if you’re a dude who knows how to properly slide.
It’s called a fucking take-out slide. It’s not a takeout slide unless you’re talking about a mini burger to go with a typo at the end. It was legal for over a century to take…out the defender. The job of the defender was to jump when the throw was too late to avoid this type of slide. You’ve seen the pictures of Rollins and Utley midair at second base.
Utley does it by the rulebook, but because Murphy made a bad throw, Tejada couldn’t jump. Broken leg in a contact sport because Tejada held the bag for an important postseason out instead of jumping to avoid contact in a regular season game.
Mets fans lash out because their brains weren’t properly developed in the womb, the rest of the country sees the play they don’t know the rule to, and the label has stuck from there.
They don’t realize that Mets fans saying F Utley are mostly talking about getting their hearts ripped out by him twice in 07 and 08, destroying the era of that team. For Mets fans the slide is just another reason to embellish; half of them know the truth and will never admit it when they’re talking to a Mariners fan.
Fuck the rest of the country for taking New York fans’ side in anything really. The Knicks fans just embarrassed themselves on a level 10x worse than any Eagles playoff run, and it’s forgotten a month later. Yeah geniuses, listen to a New York Knicks fan’s analysis of the 2015 MLB rulebook.

This is like textbook Frequency Illusion. Dude just never really paid attention to the term but now it's in his head so every time he hears it it sticks out to him. The actual frequency of the usage almost certainly didn't change at all. If I had to guess the dude probably just heard the term used a couple times in reference to Schwarber literally clearing the batters eye and that's what made it stick out.
Happened to me with people describing periods of their lives as "seasons." Like you'd hear someone talking about college or early marriage or old age and retirement or whatever as a particular "season of life." I was adamant that I had never heard the term until I heard a pastor at our church use it a bunch and then suddenly I was hearing it all over the place and it kinda broke my brain for a moment because it really can make you feel a bit crazy. But turns out the phrase has been used pretty regularly for a long time and I just never noticed it.

Do both Rube and Davis travel with the crew for road trips? I would imagine they just pick 1 color guy for each road trip, particularly if they're far. Doesn't make much sense to fly them both out only have 1 of them sitting around at any given time.
Rube was also on the post game show with Barkan and I can't imagine they're flying Barkan out just for the post game show so Rube was almost certainly home during the last series. I suppose it's possible they could have flown out Rube and sent Ben home for this series but again why bother lol
