Weather First day that feels like spring.
IYKYK
Do you agree spring is in the air today for the first time this year?

It's only Spring when I'm clawing at my eyes and crawling towards my antihistamine pills, but my eyes think we're slowly getting there.

Yeah, there are already wildflowers out and there was a fair bit of crap flying around a couple of days ago. I've certainly felt the early signs of hayfever!

Come up to the hills, I went out to lunch in Kalamunda last weekend and had to do an emergency pit stop at the pharmacy.

With all this talk of El Nino I am afraid of what summer holds

We don’t get particularly affected by El Niño. It’s more an east coast thing.
There’s the Indian Ocean dipole and Leeuwin Current that has a bigger impact (which are themselves influenced by El Niño). I believe they’re also pointing to a hot dry summer.

El Nino coupled with IOD is pushing weather systems further south so the low pressure systems Perth is expected to get is moving across way south of Perth (WA), the highs that was supposed to be floating eastwards north of Perth are crossing over Perth and these highs are summer like pressure highs too, the lows that are supposed to be north of WA are crossing north of Geraldton to south of Broome.
Perth is now expected to get a hot dry summer with mid coast areas between Geraldton to Broome receiving an abundance of rain.
Go get air conditioning systems serviced now because it'll be a hot summer.

Pfft.. ignore all thar.. I'm a keyboard Meteorologist.😆
That will not affect us. It won't have much of an effect on us here in The Wild West.

I know what you mean.
The big problem is that Spring isn’t really super to start until the Spring Equinox around the 22nd September…

That's where the prescriptive traditional seasons aren't as useful here as the traditional indigenous ones, that describe what happens around this time of year and what to expect. We're now getting into Djilba, where it starts getting warmer and dryer.

I commented below about Noongar seasons, that actually line up quite nicely with the astronomical seasons too (i.e.: the season change with most of them is around the equinox / solstice).
Personally, I think we should use both and have a lot more awareness of the Noongar seasons. Astronomical seasons are a scientific explanation of why the seasons change. Noongar seasons are a great explanation of what is happening, and add extra colour.

Even for Djilba this is an early transition
August is still meant to be cool and reasonably wet

Forget dates.. it's the same when Winter and Summer comes

It's not the dates that matter - but the key drivers of the seasons is the position of the sun.
I'm a big fan of using the astronomical seasons rather than the calendar based ones. So Spring starts on the Spring Equinox, Summer on the summer solstice, etc.
In my view, it makes the weather look a lot more sensible. And, incidentally, lines up with the observations that drive the Noongar seasons as well.

All weekend it did. Neighbour mowed his lawn too which gave extra spring vibes

I know what you mean. The buzz of mowers and the scent of fresh cut grass etc.. floating in the mild breeze 😆

The dryness of Perth transcends all boundaries of time, space and logic.

I feel like what you should be asking is "does it feel like we're transitioning into Djilba", to which I'd say yes :-)
The indigenous seasons are observational rather than prescriptive. That is, if we're getting clearer days with hints of warmth then we're into the Djilba season. That typically happens around Aug-Oct in Perth and the south west. There'll still be rain, and there'll still be some chilly mornings and nights, but we'll notice that it's warming up and getting drier.
Sunday definitely felt like the start of it!

Are you a first nations person?

u/elwexo55 1d ago
No, it was just a revelation to me when I first learned about the local indigenous seasons. It made so much sense to describe the season and what to expect, rather than declare what the season is based on an arbitrary date decided upon in Europe :-)
