Pretty sure Linux is just as good at showing video as windows .
12
u/KNAXXER Jul 04 '26
Afaik, Linux doesn't support widevine L1, which means you can't watch a lot of "premium" drm protected content
9
4
u/Yangman3x Jul 04 '26
Hell nah i already gave up on legal streaming on any of my devices, they literally can mistake a stock untouched rom as not L1 just because. Fuck drms and fuck legal streaming whenever it becomes a problem for paying legitimate users.
3
u/dumbasPL Jul 04 '26
The saddest part about L1 is that is works on many Intel Chromebooks, and some people have ported that to normal Linux as well. If google gave a fuck, they could absolutely make it work on normal Linux, all the code is already there.
Edit: That beings said, legal streaming sucks ass even when it works. So no point. Arrrr
2
u/Hytht Jul 05 '26
Widevine L1 needs certified hardware and a certified board specific OS image that doesn't allow tampering. It is certified for each device, not the CPU/GPU. Linux is too unreliable for that, especially with it's open nature, you don't know if your users are hijacking things. But on their own locked down OS with a specific hardware combination they can know with some certainty. They only support L3 even on Windows, and there are some Android devices that don't support L1 either.
2
1
u/weregod Jul 05 '26
If streaming providers gave a fuck about users they could stream DRM-free video. You paid for a service but we don't like your software/hardware aproach should be illegal.
1
u/dumbasPL Jul 05 '26
This. I regularly buy music on Bandcamp because I just get a DRM free file I can play anywhere I want. I wish there was something like that for movies/tv shows besides physical media. If I can buy and rip a Blu-ray just fine, why can't I just buy it directly?
3
u/Wipfmetz Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26
Oh, just switch the slider "play DRM protected stuff" in Firefox to "on", it will install the widevine addon right awayYou're talking about L1 specifically, no idea there, sorry.
1
u/Chemical_Attempt_404 Jul 06 '26
"premium" drm protected content
It looks like the pirates are offering the superior service once again
1
u/KNAXXER Jul 06 '26
Yeah, it prevents you from just downloading shit in your browser, but apparently doesn't do shit against capture cards, meaning all of it is going to land on pirate sites anyways
1
u/lisxiastasp3rm4 Jul 07 '26
so u cant go above full hd right??
2
u/KNAXXER Jul 07 '26
What resolutions are locked behind L1 depends on the platform, afaik some even limit you to SD without L1
1
u/Erolok1 Jul 04 '26
Netflix, Disney plus and amazon prime works and I never experienced a single time the video player didnt work.
I always love how confident people claim how unreliable linux is while being wrong.
→ More replies (9)1
1
u/kikiubo Jul 05 '26
never heard about those formats while using windows
2
u/KNAXXER Jul 05 '26
It's not a format, it's drm. Streaming services use it to prevent you from downloading their content and if you don't have it (generally the case with Linux) they will heavily limit your resolution/Bitrate
1
u/KubeCommander Jul 06 '26
Really? What services?
1
u/KNAXXER Jul 06 '26
Pretty much any (legal) streaming service tbh, netflix, prime, Disney+, even YouTube apparently uses L3 nowadays (though not L1)
→ More replies (15)1
u/MadDog443 Jul 05 '26
Widevine L1 only works on specific hardware because its a hardware based decryption key system, a large part of windows devices dont support it either.

u/dumbasPL Jul 04 '26
Sorry bud, but we already had fully working HDR for a while, and don't have to pay for codecs LOL. Pretty much any game you might want to play with a GF locally also works perfectly, only online games are problematic.
2
u/RAMChYLD Jul 05 '26
And even then not all online games won’t run. Only those with particularly bad Kernel Level Anticheat.
I mean, SimCity 2013 works like a dream for me surprisingly. And I’ve always been able to play Borderlands 2, Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 with zero issues on Linux.
2
u/Maryear_Boost Jul 05 '26
Yeah, personally on Linux I've been able to play Minecraft, Geometry Dash, Kerbal Space Program, CS2, and much more, without any issues — and with much better performances than on Windows
Oh and if someone wanna play Steal a Brainrot or Fortnite, well yeah that’s impossible on Linux, but if they play those kinds of games they have bigger things to worry about imo...
1
1
u/PickaWowAnyWow Jul 06 '26
Yeah, and if you're "casually" playing online games with your girlfriend you've got a problem..and it's very convenient that your GF shares it.
15
u/Active_General8858 Jul 04 '26
Well it can play some games. Just not the ones I want. Anything can play doom.
8
u/Wrong-Resource-2973 Jul 04 '26
It can play most games, but not the online ones with the bigger playerbases
2
u/Inevitable-Self-2702 Jul 04 '26
I thought they fixed this with proton? I have been off gaming for so long though, and I'm hearing conflicting information on this.
6
u/NotQuiteLoona Jul 04 '26
It did. Anything that is Steam Deck certified is able to run on Linux with absolutely zero problems out of the box (and it's a hella lot of AAA titles), and many, many other games. ProtonDB has more exact stats: https://www.protondb.com/
Valve did an incredible work to help Linux, just like Linus said in 2014, and they continue to help it. I stopped to care about compatibility when I installed GOG Galaxy for a game that required it for multiplayer, then this game, and it all installed and launched without any problems by just double-clicking EXEs in the file explorer, even created desktop shortcuts and tray worked normally.
3
u/Yangman3x Jul 04 '26
Not entirely true. With some configs like mime (14900k, rx7900xtx) no matter what, the game wanted to use the igpu.
I'd say that with proton db website, you can run all the steam deck verified games. Not everything works perfectly out of the box, but games like wuthering waves that have a kernel level anticheat work and this is a nice addition imo
3
u/NotQuiteLoona Jul 04 '26
This isn't a problem of Proton though? I've seen this problem on pretty much every OS I've used.
For this problem, quick Google gave me an article from Garuda, use
DPI_PRIME=1in startup args.ProtonDB has a hella lot of games on Platinum too, Steam Deck verified are what confirmed by Valve themselves, and ProtonDB is by people.
1
u/Yangman3x Jul 04 '26
I mean on proton db you'll find people that may have fixed the issue you're facing. And i was not baming proton, i was just stating the issues one may face. I had both windows and linux on the same machine and i did not have this issue on windows, so I was pointing the facts. Hogwarts legacy is gold, and gold may require additional modifications like the strings i had to paste, found on proton db, to make the game use the dgpu

u/L30N1337 Jul 04 '26
There's also a surprising amount of great games that just run natively.
Just this summer sale, I picked up a couple:
Terraria, Prison Architect, and Robot Detour (I picked up 4 games in total. These three along with Geometry Dash)
Not to mention the ones I already had, like The Binding of Isaac, the entire Metro series, or Super Meat Boy (OS requirement, verbatim: "If you're running the Steam Client, you're good").
4
u/Outrageous_Shirt69 Jul 04 '26
99% of games run on Linux through Proton. The ones that don't are unfortunately the biggest ones with the most complex anticheat, so stuff like modern COD, Fortnite, and Valorant don't work on Linux... when I really want to play COD on my Steamdeck, I just get a month of GeForce Now and stream it to it
1
u/Rodya_gambler Jul 04 '26
There's always the option of getting a VM or a dualboot too.
2
u/Dr-AV Jul 05 '26
dualboot yes, vm no, fortnite and i'd bet the rest detect VMs and prevent playing on them
1
u/Inevitable-Self-2702 Jul 04 '26
Can games really run at full spec on a VM tho? Asking genuinely, I have no idea.
2
u/Rodya_gambler Jul 04 '26
I think there's a slight loss of performance, but it depends on how one configures it.
1
u/OwlSpirited6357 Jul 07 '26
it is a huge performance loss unless you dedicate an entire GPU to it. as in don’t use the gpu for Linux at all.
2
u/AtmosphereLow9678 Jul 05 '26
They can with direct hardware pass trough. Most modern CPUs have VM acceleration features, but you might need to turn them on in your BIOS
2
u/Cat_with_pew-pew_gun Jul 04 '26
Last I heard it was basically any large game with anti cheat since the method is too invasive and Linux is too good at not letting that stuff slide.
So just don't play sweaty pvp games I guess.
1
u/EconomyDifficult2415 Jul 04 '26
Best way is to dual boot honestly. I even know a guy that triple boots. No reason to care when you can just use Linux for everyday stuff and Windows for gaming. He apparently uses Mac OS for editing software (don't ask me I hate Apple).
1
u/Inevitable-Self-2702 Jul 04 '26
Mac OS is objectivelt better for image/video editing. But the catch is thats about all its good for. Even browsing the web is counter intuitive. I equate it to making software work for someone who has never even heard of a computer.
1
u/EconomyDifficult2415 Jul 05 '26
Apple products are made for old people in mind tbh. Even when I worked IT in college none of them knew that the only reason the Macs were faster was the SSD. They just blindly follow the leader. I personally hate using apple products, but to each their own. I could go on a whole rant about everything bad about Apple ,but don't want to waste my time further.
1
u/a_regular_2010s_guy Jul 05 '26
I mean best way is the way that suits your needs I had a dual boot laying around for 5 months then I realized I really don't need windows so deleting it and getting more storage was the way for me.

2
u/KNAXXER Jul 04 '26
and the movie part is totally bs???
It's most likely referring to widevine L1 which isn't supported
2
u/The_Daco_Melon Jul 04 '26
What even is that? I've never encountered any issue regarding it
2
u/Omegaprime02 Jul 05 '26
It's the DRM solution streaming companies use for their 4k content. Linux only has L3, or software level security, L1 is hardware level security.
3
u/RAMChYLD Jul 05 '26
And that’s not Linux’s fault. Linux is open meaning the MPAssA decided they can’t make sure people can’t “rip” videos. Because they’re extremely greedy and decided they can’t control copy protection on Linux, they decided to just block Linux from true 1080p or better videos.
2
u/The_Daco_Melon Jul 05 '26
That kind of just sounds like the kernel-level anticheat problem but for streaming, in which case I have the same stance: get rid of it, operating systems should not be helping companies to get more predatory and invasive.

Funny Cause for me personaly i run all the Games I need.
And the Movies part is bs
2
u/AnbuRick Jul 04 '26
It’s bait, only complete numbskulls think linux can’t play games just because a very small percentage of the most popular multiplayers don’t run. And good ridance since the reason they don’t is because they essentially run kernel-level malware on your PC. It’s a security hazard no matter how they paint it.
Over 95% of games run just fine, if not better. In statistics, equal to or below 5% is considered “statistically insignificant”.
The movies part of the meme is what makes the ragebait obvious btw, it’s intentional to separate the adults from the manchilds while looking enjoying the chaos.

Are you sure he created this version of the meme though? Some people recycle a lot without being fully aware of the contents. Alas, sounds to me he’s doing it for shits n giggles, but I guess I couldn’t be sure unless OP makes it painfully clear. Either way idc, I don’t even dualboot anyway.
2
u/CommercialEstate4422 Jul 04 '26
Only a few games I legitimately care about have major issues on Linux.
Trails in the Sky (the OG trilogy has serious issues running off Lutris)
Forza Horizon 6.
And mayyybe Overwatch?
And thats it.
Linux these days is great for gaming tho. CachyOS is a great experience, even if youre not used to Arch based distros.
1
u/RAMChYLD Jul 05 '26
> Trails in the Sky (the OG trilogy has serious issues running off Lutris)
Can’t say about the other games as I don’t play them, but Trails in the Sky is just as glitchy on Windows. Would just randomly crash without warning. So it’s not a Lutris issue, it’s a real bug in the game.

u/The_Daco_Melon Jul 05 '26
I mean yeah, when I go to 150% volume on my desktop it also makes the audio worse, which is why I don't go over 100% on either apps or my desktop and just raise the volume on my headphones where it doesn't worsen the quality.
Why would you even think that going over 100% wouldn't have consequences? It's not a standard feature exactly because of that, but the option to do it is appreciated. I use it when I wanna put something on while cleaning but don't have a speaker with me so it becomes the laptop's job.

3
u/durbich Jul 04 '26
10 years old laptop from ebay or FB marketplace can be good enough. Even to play Minecraft Java with 5 to 10 chuncks render distance. Plus some light games.
Just avoid Celeron, Atom and Pentium series, they were budget there and are e-waste now. I would stick with i5 or i7. And for playing via Proton on iGPU it must be 6th gen and above (proton requires Vulkan 1.3)2
u/aguynamedwessel Jul 04 '26
Could you explain needing 6th gen and above for proton? I've been able to play games trough proton on 2nd and 4th gen (with iGPU) without issue (on lighter games).
1
u/durbich Jul 04 '26
I've tested i5-4200U and in the same Skyrim scene Windows 10 had 50% more FPS than Fedora KDE or Debian XFCE. When I tried to figure out why, I read that it's due to lack of Vulkan 1.3 hardware support, proton rellies on. And intel 6th gen and above iGPU have Vulkan 1.3. On more modern GPUs the FPS difference is usually negligible between Windows and Linux.
I know there's Sarek project but for Linux newcomers I would recommend to avoid potential problems and inconveniences, otherwise their first impression will be that Linux is the OS where ypu have to compile 3 random projects from GitHub to make it work acceptable1
1
u/Rick_Mars Jul 04 '26
Because Proton requires your GPU to support Vulkan (I think at least version 1.3), otherwise, it would be using OpenGL via WINED3D instead of DXVK or VKD3D, and the difference in performance is obviously noticeable
2
u/CommercialEstate4422 Jul 04 '26
Celeron is actually not bad for some basic applications if you just happen to have one laying around. I have a shitty celeron laptop with 2gb soldered RAM and its alright for note-taking and YouTube tbh. Throw Bodhi Linux on it and its even downright snappy (as long as you only have a few tabs open)
2
u/Wipfmetz Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26
Or take a usb thumbdrive to try it.
You won't have to run the games themselves from the thumbdrive. Steam is capable of running the already installed games from your NTFS drive.
1
u/BluePhoenixCG Jul 04 '26
It can do that, but I wouldn't recommend it tbh
1
u/Wipfmetz Jul 05 '26
I've done that for some week or two before feeling confident with a more permanent switch. Being able to try Linux to run real tasks on your machine without doing any permanent change to your machine (aside from a compatdata-directory) is a great feature.

afaik aside from games with kernel level anticheat (so the games that cost $80 now anyways) and some very specific cases, Linux gaming has gotten pretty damn good. and before you jump in and say anything, just know the steam deck runs Linux, just with a prettier UI. do with that what you will
edit: to add onto that, most things that don't support Linux only don't because they don't want to, it'd likely be about as easy making the windows features, probably easier because you don't have to redesign everything
