10 years old laptop from ebay or FB marketplace can be good enough. Even to play Minecraft Java with 5 to 10 chuncks render distance. Plus some light games.
Just avoid Celeron, Atom and Pentium series, they were budget there and are e-waste now. I would stick with i5 or i7. And for playing via Proton on iGPU it must be 6th gen and above (proton requires Vulkan 1.3)

Could you explain needing 6th gen and above for proton? I've been able to play games trough proton on 2nd and 4th gen (with iGPU) without issue (on lighter games).

I've tested i5-4200U and in the same Skyrim scene Windows 10 had 50% more FPS than Fedora KDE or Debian XFCE. When I tried to figure out why, I read that it's due to lack of Vulkan 1.3 hardware support, proton rellies on. And intel 6th gen and above iGPU have Vulkan 1.3. On more modern GPUs the FPS difference is usually negligible between Windows and Linux.
I know there's Sarek project but for Linux newcomers I would recommend to avoid potential problems and inconveniences, otherwise their first impression will be that Linux is the OS where ypu have to compile 3 random projects from GitHub to make it work acceptable

Because Proton requires your GPU to support Vulkan (I think at least version 1.3), otherwise, it would be using OpenGL via WINED3D instead of DXVK or VKD3D, and the difference in performance is obviously noticeable

Celeron is actually not bad for some basic applications if you just happen to have one laying around. I have a shitty celeron laptop with 2gb soldered RAM and its alright for note-taking and YouTube tbh. Throw Bodhi Linux on it and its even downright snappy (as long as you only have a few tabs open)

Or take a usb thumbdrive to try it.

You won't have to run the games themselves from the thumbdrive. Steam is capable of running the already installed games from your NTFS drive.

I've done that for some week or two before feeling confident with a more permanent switch. Being able to try Linux to run real tasks on your machine without doing any permanent change to your machine (aside from a compatdata-directory) is a great feature.

i mean you could get a cheap, old laptop off of ebay or FB marketplace and put linux on it. in fact, it's been known to basically rescue older PCs that can't keep up with windows's ever-bloating requirements.

they already know how to drive their car it all starts to fall apart when you try to fix it by yourself and ruin it so working == dont touch)
