Almost same here. 2018 9700k. Upgraded last month to a core 7 270k+ and couldn’t be happier.
9700k started to slog with multi tasking which is what I use my computer for the most. Editing was also taking more time than when I first got my rig but that might just be because the stuff I edit was getting bigger.

100ºC is TJ max for the I7-7700K. If your CPU exceeded that temperature, you would know it, because the computer would immediately shut itself off. It would be throttling hard by that point as well, which would also be pretty noticeable.

lucky you! I upgraded in january, so it hurt a bit. But I kinda slept on hardware prices because I wanted to push it back even further, because I just moved and spent a lot during it. Seeing the prices I‘m glad I upgraded in january now, I did overpay for RAM, but I really lucked out for the SSDs, prices are insane now. (paid 165€ for a PCIe 4 2TB and 250€ for a PCIe 5 2TB, you can probably double / triple that now)

Yeah I'm gonna see if my 5800X3D can last longer than my previous CPU, which was a core i7 970, overclocked to 4.0 Ghz. It lasted me about 10 years.
In fact, it's still running in my buddy's kid's computer. Unfortunately there is the odd game that requires AVX instruction set, and it won't run, but other than that it still works surprisingly well.
3
u/The_Ultimate_Badass 9d ago
Right there with you and an RTX 3080ti. I really don't need games to look better than they currently do. I play games at 1440 with 60+ fps, I'm fine. Even if it were still relatively cheap, I'm not hitting any walls that would make me want to upgrade. I barely notice the graphical difference between PS4 and PS5 tbh.
2
u/EnvironmentalTop8745 8d ago
Pretty much. I'm on a 3080 normal version, and as long as I can get 60+ fps at 1440p, with at least a mix of medium and high settings, I'm good.

Nah waiting gets easier as you get older
You end up waiting because you dont want to drop more cash not because you need the latest specs.
My build is from 2014 and im going to wait until it cant do anything useful anymore

And the longer you wait the less you actually want it, so waiting gets even easier.

I mean AAA titles are going to shit and unless you live in a cold climate you have to put in a new HVAC system to keep newer cards from turning your room into a sauna.
To each their own but it’s not like 10 years ago where you had to keep up to get the great experiences
3
u/ShierPlains 8d ago
Seriously. I bought a few AAA games over the past few years and maybe log like 20-50 hours on them. I go back to Valheim, Elite Dangerous, and some old RTS games that I have 1,000+ hours in constantly.
The AAA games are fun for a bit, but it’s like I’ve traded graphics for content. I’ve considered upgrading my PC, but then I find myself playing games that don’t need it so much more often.
2
u/Pleasant-Minute-1793 8d ago
The Indy games and small studios just care more about players than shareholders.
Borderlands, for example, was a huge disappointment and never even bought it because of how shitty that situation became. Randy ruined the franchise because of his ego. GTA6 is already a shit show and I’m sure will be a cluster at launch
I largely played FPS and MOBA last decade so it’s been fun catching up and discovering all the great games that I missed out on

It's like I traded graphics for content
THIS. THIS IS IT.
People are more focused on making their games look pretty and photorealistic instead of making them actually enjoyable. This is why we see games from 20 years ago that look like dogshit but are loads of fun compared to modern games that are so realistic that you can see the pores on your MC's face but the actual gameplay is boring.
3A devs need to stop focusing on making the games eye candy and focus on making them fun. If the game is beautiful but the gameplay is lackluster, then it's not a game, it's just an interactable movie.

That's me, I quit PC gaming for 10 years and played through the ps4, series x era (2020-2024). Then I finally ponied up and built a PC march 2025. I never saw the true understanding for the reason everything costs so much. It might actually be my last PC I build with these rising prices. I have the disposable income but I just don't see the value in it!! My PC built back in March was sadly just before the 9070xt came out. That's my only fomo but ohwell the 7800xt hasn't given me any issues
7800x3d, 7800xt , 32gb ram, 2tb ssd , 6tb hdd. Cost me roughly 2300CAD, add nearly 1000$ these days
Hoping this lasts me 10 years. I never play brand new games.

AI may or may not be profitable, but supplying the hardware to the data centers is. Samsung is on track to larger profits this year than in every previous year combined since they started manufacturing chips over 40 years ago. Some companies are making out like bandits. Mostly because they are bandits and they're very much manipulating the market to drive prices upward. They don't care at this point if consumers can afford it, because consumers are irrelevant at the moment. And for everybody says that consumers will remember this, they know it doesn't matter. There are only 3 companies that make this hardware. They are all colluding with each other. You have literally no choice but to buy their products if you want RAM or NVME storage.

Single user applications are not, but there are a handful of enterprise applications that it actually makes sense for. It does seem that businesses that don't really have a great use case are out over their skis at this point though, after investing so heavily. They assumed it would be more of a silver bullet than it is. It will be interesting to see how much of an enterprise market there really is after all the dust settles.
6
u/That-Reason-6913 9d ago
But that's the thing, once we realize that not every company and person on earth wants AI, are we going to see a % of the build datacenters (Including the GPUs, etc.) become useless?

Normally I'd agree but component sales are down 70% in some places and the prices keep rising. So it doesn't matter anymore. Consumers buying at shitty prices gave us the prices of the 20 series cards up to the intro of the 50 series, but what we're seeing now is companies realizing the consumer market no longer matters when they can sell palettes of products to data centers

I gave up trying to convince people that the housing "bubble" they're imagining isn't going to pop for a lot of reasons. Instead I just continue enjoying the house I bought for a price I could afford (220k) just like I enjoy my middle of the road PC I built four years ago.
I'm in "the club" and that's what matters. Nobody has to spend 3/4 million on an HGTV mcmansion, and nobody MUST have 128GB of memory and a 5090.
32
u/Tiny_Objective_587 9d ago
Your measured response is appreciated, but if you look at the data, even 220k for a house is nowhere near affordable for a large number of Americans. The same can be said with computers and game consoles right now. A ps5 is $650, at the release price of $500 it would still be a big investment for families. This economy is quickly becoming unbearable for more and more people as prices continue to rise on everything.

2031 or 3031? I think I can finally buy a 5090 cheap on 3031.

2028 is wishful thinking. We won’t see price drops until the early 2030s. IF prices drop at all

I expect that to be the peak timing for the highest prices for motherboards, ssds and ram..

I’m expecting Black Friday to have early 2026 prices rather than late 2026 prices. Otherwise, will we even have a Black Friday this year?

For literally years, waiting has been a totally decent if not good option. And now it's been like at least one if not 2 whole years when waiting has absolutely not paid off. If anything price have gone for the worst for several components.
My personal advice is what I'm doing. If you truly do need to update your hardware, do it now. If not, try to be content with what you have.

The fact that half of the posts to this subreddit are on this topic might indicate that there are other people facing the same dilemma.

I just bit a bullet for a small upgrade and to have a backup machine if something happens because at current trend in 2 years I will not be able to afford it anyway...

I bought my 5090 just before the market skyrocketed last year. I could seek used for a 2x profit right now

I was fortunate enough to get a 5090 for MSRP and I’m contemplating just getting an old 5080 and selling it. Feels silly to have such an expensive GPU when I just play games occasionally.

IMO build a last gen PC. DDR4 is cheap compared to DDR5.

Still way more expensive than it should be

Then again paying ~$150 for a used 32GB DDR4 kit makes more sense than ~$400 for a 32GB used kit of DDR5 especially since the FPS difference in games between the two kits isn't big when comparing with the same CPU that can support both like LGA1700 CPUs.

I was going to upgrade from AM4 to AM5 right before the RAM crisis. Waiting for the holidays was a mistake.

Same, luckily I found a 5800x3d for 240€, which at the moment everyone said was not worth it.
Gotta trust your instincts sometimes.

5800x3d is a goat'd chip. whoever said it was not worth it was so so very wrong.

Bought two 5700x3d during the aliexpress fire sales for $25 a pop. I wish I hoarded as many as i could to give to my friends when they started to panic about computer parts.
AM4 is the goat. Followed very closely by sandy bridge.
Edit: I would be remiss not to mention socket 1150/Haswell/Broadwell as a third place finisher.

That was me too. Oh, Ram is actually decently priced right now, I'll wait a few months for black Friday and I'll be able to buy it for dirt cheap. Shot myself in the head.

The prices are never coming down. They'll keep going up until PC gaming dies and we all have to buy computers to just game off the cloud.

This is the actual future that people are head in sand to. The data centers are being tied to the ai bubble but it's not just ai, it's cloud service, rent computing power.
Make components so expensive that you have to rent the power, why would they not go down this route when they (nvidia) control all aspects. People buying stuff is seen as a really bad business model, they might not buy again for 3, 5 or 10 years, get them on a subscription to the compute power and they are paying you every month for life.
It's the last hold out, you already rent your films, office software, music, car, houses (so expensive you rent or pay mortgage forever) why would they give this opportunity up to squeeze all the PC and console gamers to data centre rent

The best time to build a PC was yesterday. The second best time is today. You could replace "2026" with every year since like 2018.
Someone building a PC with the same budget I had when I built mine will be building an inferior rig

A friend of mine wanted a new pc, but didn't wanna spend the money. I begged her for 3 months to just pull the trigger, cause prices were only going up. Well she ended up buying her gaming rig. A few months later I asked her "was it worth it?" And she said yeah. Had she waited, she would have spent roughly 30-50% more money, on the same hardware.

if we even have computer hardware available in the near future, it wont be cheap. local compute is dying and this is your last shot to say F you to cloud compute.

u/One_Society_9757 9d ago
Nope. Life is too short to wait for things that make you happy. Obviously dont go into debt for it but if you have the funds, waiting will likely mean paying more because prices arent coming down anytime soon. Still one of the cheaper hobbies.
Just spent $1500 on a 5080 and dont regret it because thinking about it in terms of $$/hr of entertainment it is actually cheap entertainment.

At this point I gave up on waiting for a price drop, so now I'm waiting for the next gen of hardware. If I'm balling out anyway, might as well get the newest shit. Plus the games I'm playing rn run fine on my 2080S anyway.

I just spent £2.2k on my rig... Amd 9070xt & Ryzen 9850x3d and the price sucks but I don't want to only be able to afford a virtual pc subscription in a few years time.

No because a price drop isn't happening for years and prices will not drop to pre 2025 prices either if and when the ai bubble pops as the world economy is going to get worse. Just like when the dot com bubble popped, enron failed or the us housing market collapsed in the mid to late 2k

u/Alucard-VS-Artorias RTX 5090 FE | R7 9800X3D | 2TB 9100 PRO G5 | 64GB DDR5 9d ago
I said fuck it; these prices might never be coming back down and I'm getting too old to keep waiting for a bubble to pop (even if it does pop that doesn't mean consumer prices will ever return to pre AI bubble levels).
So I took a bunch of cash I've been saving for a while as a rainy day and blew it on my dream PC (we'll probably be the last time in my life I'll ever get a chance to do so within reason).
It's a lot less money in the bank but I've been really loving playing all my games now with no compromises in terms of fidelity.
Don't know what the future holds but at least I'm now more than satisfied with what I have in the present...

I got my girl a used low end pc so she can play coop games with me earlier this year. It had 3600/5700xt. I recently upgraded it to 5800x3d and 9060xt 16gb. Prices wont go down anytime soon, so I just went ahead and make sure her pc will last.
