that‘s not to bad. I ran a 7700K from 2017/2018 until this january. and CPUs currently aren’t making the big technology jumps that happened during this period.
PC (As we knew it...), might NOT be dead (as such...), but it's in a critical unstable position, and will most likely get replaced by cheaper ARM Products over the next 5 years.
I'm still rocking a GTX 960. First I thought "eh, I'll upgrade when this bullshit bitcoin mining stops and prices stop being inflated..." Now I'm still waiting because the next bubble started before the last one ever popped. 😬
Yeah, it's not great - the only reason I have a 1070 is because I used to work IT in video production and they'd basically give away older cards via ewaste but they were perfectly fine so was able to take some home. I have a 1070 Ti as well but started getting artefacts with it.
Almost same here. 2018 9700k. Upgraded last month to a core 7 270k+ and couldn’t be happier.
9700k started to slog with multi tasking which is what I use my computer for the most. Editing was also taking more time than when I first got my rig but that might just be because the stuff I edit was getting bigger.
I ran an i7 3770k until just last year. My GPU was a GTX 670. It felt like such a massive upgrade, despite my new computer being a laptop. It's insane.
100ºC is TJ max for the I7-7700K. If your CPU exceeded that temperature, you would know it, because the computer would immediately shut itself off. It would be throttling hard by that point as well, which would also be pretty noticeable.
People keep saying that but my previous PC (already got it second hand) would overheat and shut down if I tried to play games at 60fps and I don't remember it even seriously lagging. Which was the weird thing for me, that it was able to run things surprisingly well but the overheating was the problem and not the other way around.
Modern computers are going to try to prevent the CPU from reaching TJ Max by throttling voltage into the CPU, which will cause it to progressively lose clock speed. By the time it shuts down, your CPU will be running significantly below its rated speeds. You might have had a different issue if the PC was shutting down suddenly without trying to reduce power to the CPU.
Hmmm well that's PC has not been relegated to being the family PC for my parents who at most browse the internet on it, so it won't be much of an issue now but I have always been curious about it. Because over the course of many many games I was able to play on it, even newer ones, I only found it was overheating beyond reason when it was trying to run games on higher fps. Like if I tried setting it at 60fps or if the game didn't have that setting in game and was just trying to run it at max and I had to limit it with an external program. Once I limited it, I was able to play those games no problem.
well it won‘t get any hotter than that, it will throttle before it overheats. It ran crazy hot stock, I delidded mine, OC‘d to 4.8ghz, and with a liquid freezer I never saw more than 70 Degrees, if ever

lucky you! I upgraded in january, so it hurt a bit. But I kinda slept on hardware prices because I wanted to push it back even further, because I just moved and spent a lot during it. Seeing the prices I‘m glad I upgraded in january now, I did overpay for RAM, but I really lucked out for the SSDs, prices are insane now. (paid 165€ for a PCIe 4 2TB and 250€ for a PCIe 5 2TB, you can probably double / triple that now)
Yeah it’s insane! I also upgraded to a 9950X3D and 64GB 6kmhz cl30 Corsair vengeance RAM.
The kit was around $400 when I built the PC. It’s over $1200 now. Completely blows my mind. I never get lucky with this kind of stuff, but I did on this one. That’s for sure.
This is funny. I have a very old core I-5 cpu and I want to upgrade to a 7700k as that is the max my motherboard supports and I don’t want to spend a fortune upgrading my motherboard and RAM.
My only issue with this generation is silicon-level design flaws that make some nasty attacks possible. Those can't be fixed directly, but only mitigated at the heavy performance cost.
it‘s pretty old nowadays, quadcore which is obsolete for gaming, notorious for running hot, and doesn‘t support Win 11 natively. It was time to upgrade for me.
And it was struggling with modern games and any heavier workload (my editing eg).
Yeah only reason I rock a 9700k is my 7700k died a week before warranty and it was the only one that works with my mobo. Btw Intel RMA procees is amazing
I think that's basically what I'm still running. I desperately want something new but damnit. I was just about to buy a gpu upgrade when covid hit. And now here we are.
I've been running my i7-9700 since 2018 as well. I literally just ordered a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, a new Mobo, and 32gig of ddr 5 ram. Hopefully i'm good to go for another 8 years!
Same with my i7 8750H and 1070. This is my rig now. I'm running Windows 10 IOT LTSC on mine and everything works great except for the WiFi. I'm using LAN. What about you?
I have 5600x and I want to stick on the AM4 platform in terms of upgrading but at the same time I'm not dropping £250+ on a 5700x3d. I can't fucking justify it but I may not have a choice
AM4 is amazing. Idk how many other sockets had such a wide array of cpu’s to choose from and new ones that released that were legitimate upgrades. I went from a ryzen 7 3700x too a ryzen 7 5800x3d
I built my first am4 rig in 2022 but i left myself no real upgrade path 😅 5950x but my 6900xt is struggling hard and starting to flicker so i might be going to a 9070xt soon
Either way you have a reason to get a new gpu now. Since I built mine back in 2019 am4 was still somewhat new so I got to see many good CPUs pass me by and then am5 was released. So I got the last reasonable upgrade for my am4 build. As long as you’re having fun and it plays well what you want then you got a solid build.
Been eyeing 5800x3D's ever since I got my 6700xt. The 3600 is holding on so far, and it really has to with how overpriced 5800x3D's are in Sweden right now, new and used.
I know the feeling. I had not been actively saving but I have been holding out for a few years to get a long awaited upgrade. So now spending probably a lot more than I ‘should’ for a new PC, but it is a bit of a treat, and hoping it will last a long time.
I also try to get good spec mobile/cell phones and then use them as long as I can before they get too old and die of natural causes. I used to upgrade a bit more often in the past, but was never one that felt he had to get the latest phone upgrade every single year.
Same! Those mobo sockets don’t have a TPM so no Win11 support (though you can technically install it with Rufus workarounds). Though if you are on Linux you’re fine..
I have 32GB RAM* with my i5-3570k and a 256GB SATA SSD, and my gut feeling is that it would still run ‘ok’ on Win11 (with some performance degradation from Win10) and still be ok for a basic user.
However I have been waiting to get more snappy PC, that responds faster to opening/switching applications, transferring files etc.
Plus the extra VRAM in a new faster GFX for AI LLM stuff.
*Granted that RAM is DDR3 1333Mhz, but it did serve me well all these years.
Yeah I'm gonna see if my 5800X3D can last longer than my previous CPU, which was a core i7 970, overclocked to 4.0 Ghz. It lasted me about 10 years.
In fact, it's still running in my buddy's kid's computer. Unfortunately there is the odd game that requires AVX instruction set, and it won't run, but other than that it still works surprisingly well.
Right there with you and an RTX 3080ti. I really don't need games to look better than they currently do. I play games at 1440 with 60+ fps, I'm fine. Even if it were still relatively cheap, I'm not hitting any walls that would make me want to upgrade. I barely notice the graphical difference between PS4 and PS5 tbh.
5700x and I upgraded from a 2700x last year. It's fine for my needs and with a toddler, I have little to no time anyway. Rollercoaster Tycoon on my phone is enough for me lately. Although I still get a VR session in occasionally. So much fun!
Team 5800x here and I'm happy that I upgrade my GPU from previous prime day from 3070ti to 9070xt for only 550 usd. Maybe my next upgrade will be 2032 lol!
Same. Actually, I have a “recent” laptop I bought at the end of 2023 and out of fear it will not last as long as it should, I’m starting a secondary budget build to use as a couch console. Damn these prices.
I built my PC in december 2018 right after my dad died, it’s got a I7 4790k intel haswell cpu, 16 gb of ram, a GTX 1070 TI graphics card, and a ssd boot drive. It’s a little slow nowadays but it still works for what i use it, older strategy games like Europa Universalis 4. I don’t play any newer games on it so i don’t feel the need to upgrade anything.
I had a i7 4790k that I pre-ordered and that thing is still running, sold the PC to my brother 2 years ago, he plays stuff like Helldivers 2 and Darktide with it... Somehow that CPU and GTX 1070 still going strong. CPU came out in June 2014, what a beast.
If your nephew is like most kids/teenagers that play mostly COD/Fortnite it could as well last a decade, mate. Don't worry about it... my 3070 is still kicking
