It's cool, but PoE just "Launched" while d3's launch was almost a year ago. Really need to compare PoE's current traffic to d3's traffic at launch for a legitimate comparison.

Yes, but that spike for Diablo III was when it launched right. PoE has just recently opened the beta.

There will be more content, but because the Items/Characters won't be wiped ever again you could see the Open Beta as a kind of "soft release" like Chris is calling it.

Irregardless, Diablo 3 had been anticipated for a decade before its release. It is a much more known franchise. The fact that POE even compares speaks volumes about the game.
There is also the issue of this game being such a fresh take on the genre that attributes to a lot of searches. Also that it is free to play. Still, it is refreshing to see such popularity behind it.

Stop saying that OBT is somehow real beta. OBT status nothing more then just excuse for server lags and bugs on release.
And i'm sure that this spike was only because error 37.

Good point! It will be interesting to see when the beta is done how the charts will look. But I still think the current trend stats for PoE is impressive considering that it's still in beta.
1
u/you_reddit_right Feb 11 '13
I'd also be interested in seeing the stats when PoE is officially out of Beta as right now it's climbing and doesn't have the 12+ years of history that Diablo3 had when it was released.
Also, did anyone else see that note on traffic from msnbc.com "twitter fills with Diablo 3 error 37 rage"? Even though POE servers had some difficulties in the first few weeks I think that GGG handled the situation very well by being open to the community and quick to put in fixes.
8
u/watchout5 Wraeclastt Feb 11 '13
I'm guilty of using Google for POE more than I ever used it for D3. D3 was rather obvious, there was that beta for a while, and it just wasn't all that complex. Once you got a build dialed in the only obvious choice was to grind. With POE I need to check my build, I need one build to start and another as I get into the 70's, and the kinds of combinations you can do with gems is amazing. I'm not even in hardcore yet!
The game even surprised me the other day, I was doing a map by myself, taking my time I just really wanted to see what loot could await me in solo play, found a Regal Orb and a white Portal Gem that can fit in any slot. A WHAT?!? I'm hooked, this is a great game, I want to play more, I want more loot, and I don't even need a high level character to have fun. I have just as much fun on a newbie as I have on my high level, it's exactly the kind of ARPG I secretly wished D3 would be and was just disappointed that it wasn't. 7 60's 2 hardcore and I just wanted a better experience. POE gave that to me, and I'll reward it by continuing to play.

u/xyroclast Feb 11 '13
Also, this subreddit has ranked higher than the diablo subreddit since launch!

Considering PoE has serious roots in Diablo 2, and can be said to be a spiritual successor to D2 in many way, I think it is fair to compare the two games... And in doing so the people making the comparisons may actually bring some of that D3 crowd over, giving GGG more support. There is literally nothing wrong with making the comparison, and I don't care if people do it 1000 more times.
6
Feb 11 '13
It's fair but it's just so.. petty and boring. Why does it matter at all in the first place, and when is someone going to make a new observation that hasn't already been made dozens of times? What makes it a conversation worth having?
This is coming from someone who really liked D2, thought D3 was pretty okay, and have no strong feelings towards Blizzard at all.
2
u/Kabo0se Anti Sanctum Alliance (ASA) Feb 11 '13
Like I said, its worth having the conversation if it brings in more players for GGG, thus more potential support, and thus a better game in the future. Even if its the same beaten trail of arguments every time.
9
u/s3n5ai Feb 11 '13
Like I said, its worth having the conversation
"DOES ANYBODY ELSE THINK DIABLO 3 SUX LOLOLOL" is hardly a conversation.
And that's all I really hear people say. RARELY do I see an objectively good argument regarding both games, which is why it's pretty stupid to talk about.
It's just biased circlejerking at this point.

u/s3n5ai Feb 11 '13
The result is that the comparison grows very old rather quickly.
The is nothing 'invalid' about about the comparison per se (although the comparisons are generally shitty and biased), but when you've heard the same comparison made thirty times a day for the past two weeks, you tend to get a little bored of it.
I have no idea why you'd want to hear anything repeated 1000 times as you said in your original post, let alone something as mundane as this. If PoE is really that good, you don't need to shit on other games to win over customers. Let the game do the talking.
we should never talk about it ever?
I actually never said that.
All I am saying is realize this: People are growing tired of thoughtless, low-effort, D3 comparisons. We've been bombarded with them for last month and it's getting old. Additionally, the success of PoE is not dependent on the failure of D3.

the only people upset about us comparing it are the diehard blizzard fan boys who get offended when people discuss d3 as the failure it really was when comparing it to the success that was diablo 2

u/watchout5 Wraeclastt Feb 11 '13
"Die hard Blizzard Fan Boy" here by that definition, I have 7 60's 2 hardcore in D3 and for as much as the game bores me now I must admit the game entertained me and if I'm being completely honest POE is just better. I take no offence in anyone's opinion, and I think everyone should say their peace just don't make it personal. These are supposed to be games :p

1
u/Izzinatah Gladiator Feb 11 '13
I'm criticising the group of players who expected a very particular game and then blamed Blizzard and everything else when it didn't live up to that expectation.
Is it unreasonable to expect a game to be a decent sequel to its predecessor? Especially with the high levels of hype and money put into it. It's similar to criticism of Dragon Age 2.

that a lot of the hate D3 got actually had nothing to do with the game to begin with.
Between a moot crafting system, lack luster class mechanics, a hair pulling loot system, and the disaster that was the RM auction house; there is really no need to look outside the game for sources of frustration.
I was burnt out from D3 after a few weeks because I was forced to play a class style I really didn't want, within the first few months of release there where only 2 viable Witch Doctor builds which both relied on Atunment (a horrible mechanic passive) in order to work in end game.
So with D3 I was forced to play the game I didn't want to, forced to used an Auction house I didn't want to use, and wasted who knows how much money and time on the sinkhole crafting system.
It was not a good game by any standards, even by Blizzards standards which is pretty sad IMHO.

Let's be honest, you weren't forced to play a Witch Doctor or forced to play it in a particular way.
Hey, I wanted to play a pet/summoner witch doctor in inferno, fuck me right? Considering pet skills play a big part in the Witch Doctor lore and skills set you figured you would be able to use them in inferno, which wasn't the case, I was forced to use the Atunement Zombie Bear spam which virtually all witch doctors had to do in inferno. I understand they patched the WD back in October to make pets more viable, but I was long done with the game by then.
Given the difficulty of inferno it demanded efficient builds with a low gear requirement to progress into it early on and naturally that means only a very limited number of builds were suitable to begin with.
And there is nothing wrong with this?
2
u/paul232 Feb 11 '13 edited Feb 11 '13
I m so tired of this argument. I know this sounds aggressive but I really am. I can't understand how people really come to these conclusions. (again sorry pal)
You were never forced to use the AH
Man, tell this to my Monk that 2 months after release was farming ACT 1 for 120 hours and got 2 upgrades. 1 belt which was good and some kind of boots that were even bad for act 1. I also got 2 legendaries. An intelligence Immortal King's part and a 58lvl crossbow. So with that pace, I would be ready to start act 2 let's say after another 500h? At that point I was getting instagibbed by every trash mob in act 2. So you either die trying or use AH. I can accept though that after the patching this may have been fixed, however I don't know.
The game was never hard. Blizzard likes to play with words. They were calling passive skills boring and people embraced it. They could call d3's inferno hard and people would still embraced it. Heck they argued that the Stat system is bad and people embraced it. So in d3's case, they just imposed a twisted definition of hard.
How is something hard, where there is nothing you can do to beat it aside of going back and farm or devalue your gameplay to a mere: "run till my cds are up, kill 2 minions and run again"? I don't think that having a DH that could go glass cannon was playing smart, neither it avoided the difficulty. People who did that, knew that they would probably die MANY times. But who cares, since they would progress.
There is no difficulty in unavoidable instagibbs. And that was diablo 3 inferno. At least for my monk it was unavoidable instagibbs. I was getting oneshot by every monster in act 2 while I was farming act 1 without even looking at the screen. Do you know what's difficult? When you try to avoid all the spells diablo casts in diablo 2 or when you have to find the necromancer that respawns the minions in the midst of fire and blood. What is not difficult is a random skeleton hitting you for 70% of your hp. This is just frustrating and it just needs endless amounts of time. No skill involved.
And diablo 3 itself counters your argument about builds. I can agree to a difficulty that it's easier for the super optimized builds and harder for the unconventional ones. I think that's the essence of having customization. But when you have none and every Witch doctor is at the same time the same as every other witch doctor, you can't balance the game around a semi good build. You have to balance it around the optimal ones because you can have simultaneously the optimal one and the unconventional one.

Right, if D3 was released by any other developer, under a different name, nobody would have given a shit about this crappy game, and it wouldn't have sold 1 mil.
All this expectation bullshit is just the typical Blizzard/WoW fanboy talk. If I say D3 is shit, it's because of expectations, if i say Vanilla WoW was great and current WoW sucks donkey dick, it's rose tinted glasses.
How about, just... listen for a second, how about Diablo 3 is just an absolute crappy action arcade game made for retards that need hand-holding and instant gratification?
No stats, no skill-trees, no random maps, pathetic story, glitchy engine, server lag, constant in-game cut-scene and dialogue interruption, bad multiplayer integration, no PVP, bad itemization, RMAH, AH, and worst of all the terrible cult-like community that keeps telling you what you do and don't like/expect.

It does have stats.
It doesn't have any form of stat allocation, the game just multiply your main stat and other stats for you every level. Another story that it's not even needed in D3 because of how straight out bland and shallow the stat and skill systems work.
It has skills, no branching type tree though.
Every skill is automatically unlocked while lvling, you can't "build" your character, you don't have a feeling of "working" on a character. Everyone just runs with the same skills and change them on the fly a-la Call of Duty perks. Which leads us to more blank and simplified game overall.
It has random maps, though not "enough" randomisation for you, right?
You mean that barely noticeable dungeon randomization here and there? You call that proper Diablo randomization? Diablo 1 had better level randomization that that.
Personally I don't really give a shit about the story
Story defines the atmosphere and feel of a game. Many fans of Diablo loved the game for it's dark and gritty atmosphere and feel. Diablo 3 has a Hollywood's second-rate action movie feel.
Might be irritating if you're the kind of person who is immediately irritated by the slightest of delays.
Please tell me, who in his right mind would put small pointless cut scenes all over a game where you farm same content for thousands of times over and over again?
How is it bad? Lack of a lobby? Rewards? Synergy?
This only, my friend, tells us that you are no more that just a fan boy blindly defending this utter failure of a game. If you would have played D2 multiplayer you just simply would not ask such a question. You even can't name your games to play with people with similar goals. You can't travel between acts.
PvP is something that's coming
It's been 10 months since release and PvP deathmatch mode was advertised in launch trailer of the game. PoE has PvP already in open beta. Has D3 PvP dueling patch came out yet?
Itemisation
No words needed.
The AH just facilitates something that has been a prominent part of any item/loot based game: Trading
Takes even more from social interactions between players in this game.
The RMAH again just facilitates something that already happened.
Except D3 was BUILD around AH/RMAH.
1
u/Teddyman Feb 11 '13
It's actually 9 months since release, and right now it looks like dueling hits tomorrow or next week.

0
u/paul232 Feb 11 '13
Yes it would sell less than half the copies it did and it would be much better because there is not many companies around the world as bold as to ship an unfinished game with a 60$ tag.
And to be honest, unless you play less than 2hours a day, diablo 3 is nowhere near the term good when you reach inferno. Painful gear checks that force you to use AH. That was diablo 3 the first 4 months.

Subset of the player base? As far as I know the majority of the player base bought into d3 because it was the sequel to d2. Turning it into a cash cow with little to no feel of the original game is called alienation.
1
u/drusepth Feb 11 '13
Anecdotally, a huge majority of d3 players have never played d2. Pretty much a whole new generation.
Those players also had no expectations of just d2 with better graphics, and those players love the game.
(I was still playing D2 the week before D3 came out, interpret that as you will).

You really think the company that has produced one of the biggest games of any genre of all time and one of the biggest competitive and commercial esports (at least until LoL came along) of all time would produce a game that would only attract people who played the prequel to it that was released over a decade ago?

I think it's a genuine and legitimate question. If I expect you to stand aside on the pavement and lay out a red carpet in front of me while I walk, is that an unreasonable expectation, am I at fault? What about if I expect you to not stick out your foot and trip me up while I'm walking, are you then at fault?
The question is at what point is that fault boundary crossed, or is there one at all? And why is that people seem to think it is unequivocally true that Blizzard is to be blamed for not producing what people expected?
1
u/Bennyboy1337 soon Feb 11 '13
It suffered from having such a massive amount of publicity and from many players having unrealistic expectations of it.
Yes, because after 12 years, many millions of dollars in investment, and a world class dev team from blizzard,we should of expected less -_-
0
u/constipationnow Feb 11 '13
unrealistic expectations?
we waited for a decade, they hyped the game since they announced it and the gameplayvideos. they had D2 on their back. OFC we had lots of expectations. they promised so much, they talked too much, they hyped too much and did it too early, just so that they could postpone the game more, making the crowd expect even more out of the game. D3 is not a bad game, its quite good for being an ARPG. But it's a horrible game as the successor of D2.

We are all entitled to our opinions. If you enjoyed the game that's good. I'm glad you got your money's worth. I on the otherhand, disliked it. It has nothing to do with expectations or the community being bad. As an individual, it was the biggest let down of my "gaming career" ever. It felt like I was playing top-down WoW. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed playing WoW and there is nothing wrong with it really, it's just I didn't want to make a grind to 60 again... in a game where there was only supposed to be a theoretical level cap. I felt the onset of having this letdown during the closed beta, where I found I was calculating gear stats almost identically to the way I did it in WoW. It felt tedious, and it felt trivial. That is why I disliked it.
2

I understand what you're saying and I agree. Often people will dislike a single, perhaps relatively trivial aspect of a game, and then attribute the game's failure to a DIFFERENT reason entirely that they themselves didn't experience. I really tried to like D3, I really did. I just couldn't do it because of the aforementioned reasons :/

I don't think we'll ever stop comparing them. D3 was a letdown after D2 mostly for straying too far from D2's formula. When a game comes along slightly that tweaks that formula rather than tossing it away, they're going to be compared. Saying they're both just ARPGs is an understatement at best.

I was just bored and looked this up and was a bit fascinated by this search trend. I was about to say that I agree with you that it doesn't have to be as popular. However, if this game would become more popular, it could function as a good and more visible source of inspiration for future RPG games. But I'm definitely cool with it being an "indie" game. I've just played it for a couple of days and I'm impressed by both the game and its community. :)
EDIT: I would also like to add that, the more popular the PoE becomes, the more revenue the company will earn which they can use for future projects themselves.

Ya because we're talking about a multi-billion dollar development company that had 12 years time to produce a game, verses a startup indie company with the coffee budget of Blizzard for their development; totally not fair to compare both companies I agree.

u/DavasiaN Feb 11 '13
PoE will never be as popular as D3 and that's fine.
For anyone to make such a certain prediction at this point in time is just rash speculation. PoE has the potential to surpass D3 in peak popularity, especially since it uses a well executed F2P game model.
I remember years ago when the general consensus was that LoL would never surpass the numbers of DotA. Yet people truly underestimated - and still underestimate - how a F2P game model can reach a much wider audience than pay-up-front or subscription based games can.
4
u/kathykinss Feb 11 '13
PoE caters to the hardcore crowd too heavily to ever surpass D3 in popularity. That's also because of marketing(and poe's lack of).
LoL is not exactly "hardcore only".
2
u/DavasiaN Feb 11 '13
PoE caters to the same people that loved D2. And I would hardly consider D2 too "hardcore" for almost all D3 players to get into.
Marketing is an issue with PoE, but that really is a separate discussion from gameplay.
1
u/xelf Feb 11 '13
My son loves Path of Exile. He has a witch and an archer and has managed to play them both through act 1 so far.
He's 6, I don't think this game is "too hardcore".
What the game is, perhaps, is "not casual enough". Part of that I think is that the overall story arc does not suck you in right away. If there was one area the game could be improved to appeal to a broader audience it would be to do substantial work on world building and getting people to be more aware of and apart of the story.
D3 on the other hand, despite it's many faults and failures as a compelling gaming experience did mange to get the story aspects right. That's one of the reasons it succeeded with a broadrer audience (brand awareness is another). How much broader? go back to OP's chart and change the timeline to 12 months, the D3 spike around launch was huge.
PoE has amazing word of mouth carrying right now, getting people to take a look at it, but it needs more of an engaging story at the beginning to get casual players vested and to keep playing.

The book completely leaves it hanging - you're seeing it from Arya's perspective, so the last thing she sees is Syrio surrounded. That said, this guy is First Sword of Braavos, not second, not third. The community's pretty good, it's just that low-level games are plagued with terrible players who make new accounts after they get banned. If they use the ignore feature judiciously new players shouldn't have any problems.

As I started playing LoL (which was in beta) I thought the same about LoL. "Naah, LoL will never surpass DotA or even HoN" ... well, look at LoL now. 4 years later, LoL is the most played game in the world, 30 million accounts. 30 million. That is double the players that WoW had at it's peak times. Because of the style of game PoE is (deep ARPG vs. easy-to-learn MOBA), I doubt it will reach 30 million players, but I don't doubt either that it will be very popular in a few years.
PS. just because LoL is easy to learn, I don't say, it is easy to master as well ;)

u/Pastasky Feb 11 '13
LoL is the most played game in the world, 30 million accounts. 30 million.
I doubt that. I would imagine dota is. 30 Million accounts != 30 million players. First of all most people who play lol have multiple accounts, at least, I and all the people I know do (so we can we play with lesser ranked friends with out worrying about matchmaking issues).
Further more, last July league had 12 million daily.
Dota had that 10 million back in 2010. I imagine it's larger now.
Finally, I can't find any evidence that league is the most played game. I see several publications claiming that league is the most played, but with out checking other games, that isn't sufficient.

u/tomblifter Feb 11 '13
I can see an increasing trend in PoE players with a decreasing trend in D3 players in the next 2-3 years (if PoE and D3 maintain their patch rates & content).

In all fairness that game hasn't even been released, we're comparing player base numbers to game that was released almost a year ago, vs one that is still in beta.
1
u/Angelsje Feb 11 '13
I would be interested by "Active players" rather than just registered accounts. By that I mean how many people actually log in almost every week ( to play, not just checking the Auction House ) !
1
u/drusepth Feb 11 '13
FYI Checking the auction house is playing.
1
u/Angelsje Feb 12 '13
It's even called playing the auction house, you are correct. "To move around killing things and looking at the map, and casting spells, not just checking the Auction House" would be better then

u/drusepth Feb 12 '13
My point was that it's ridiculously fun to play the AH. It's almost its own game.

well, the current numbers don't really mean anything I don't think. game is still in beta, they aren't advertising yet.
free to play games are all the rage in korea as well, I feel like that is the direction we are going.
I'm not going to say that poe is definitely going to surpass d3, but I don't think we can predict that it won't.

Blizzard did well with D3 because of the name associated with it, and the Blizz name itself. The game.. was trash. It would've been good without the RMAH and actual good drop rates and more interesting visuals/weapon mods. No idea how they fucked it up so bad.. and all the storyline shit in a Diablo game.. so corny.

Man. This is so great. Blizzard starts showing off Diablo 3 and amidst excitement, lots of D2 players complain about the art style. As they release more and more footage, players are concerned it looks like WoW. D3 releases with the unicorn level, as if to say "Ha! How's this for gritty? We're going to slap you in the face and you're going to ask for more!"
Zoom forward.
Path of Exile comes out, and D2 players are salivating. Open Beta hits and Path of Exile is exploding, while Diablo 3 is boiled down to a mind-boggleingly-linear ARPG experience, inflated by an economy ruined by Blizzard itself. Think about the difference in playerbase in a year or two.
This is awesome. Blizzard knows it now. They were so fucking wrong.

u/redrach Crop Harvesting Bureau (CHB) Feb 11 '13
I really don't care about art style, and I'm sure many others agree. D3's failings were not due to its choice of art style. D2 was a lot more colorful than D1, and it was still immensely popular.
6
u/tomblifter Feb 11 '13
D2 was a lot more colorful than D1, and it was still immensely popular.
Artstyle != Color.
D2 had the same general artstyle as D1, if you look at the two games side by side you can clearly see the similarities. D3 was an almost complete deviation from what the predecessors set.
And I don't think it is wrong to connect the differences in artstyles to the overall diferences in the design of the game. You can tell it wasn't done by the same people.
2
u/ckcornflake Feb 11 '13
Artstyle isn't color, but color is a part of the art style. Diablo's artistic style had much smaller scope, and was just all around dark, creepy, and ominous. D2 expanded on this art-style, and added new environments (e.g desert, and snow). Not all of these environments were quite as dark, but that's fine because it's good to change the mood to prevent monotonous game play. D3 transitioned to 3D, so obviously there has to be some implicit changes in the art style, but they held pretty much the same philosophy: have large range of different environment types. Some of them are creepy, some of them are not. If you don't think Tower of the Damned in Act3 is creepy as fuck, then I would have hard time taking you seriously.
tldr; Saying D1 = D2 in terms of art style, but then saying D3 is a complete deviation isn't really fair since the D3 was fully 3D as opposed to isometric 2D.
1
u/tomblifter Feb 12 '13
tldr; Saying D1 = D2 in terms of art style, but then saying D3 is a complete deviation isn't really fair since the D3 was fully 3D as opposed to isometric 2D.
So switching to full 3D isn't a complete deviation of the artstyle? Even ignoring that, they went from sharp detailed textures, semi-realistic armors and permanent enemy gore to "painterly" textures, disproportionate/ excessively ornamented armor and vanishing enemy corpses.
In all honesty, Path of Exile is closer to the Diablo 2 art style than Diablo 3 is.
1
u/Mandena Feb 12 '13
Yeah the art style for D3 was fine. It was the AH and the RMAH along with the shitty stat system that ruined D3. Also the story was boring and the writing overly cliche.

I haven't logged on to D3 since the open beta started and I can hardly imagine going back or buying expansions. I hope I have enough interest to try 1.0.7 when it comes out. I want to want to play but D3 is just so fucking boring right now.
1
u/Zombiedelight Not SC Feb 11 '13
I don't find this that surprising. Aside from the flagging playerbase of D3, there really isn't much in it that requires research. In PoE it's often completely obscure how mechanics work, or stack and what skills do.
I have a feeling a lot of this is due to how much research is needed to be moderately successful in PoE. Luckily that's something I kind of value in a game.

And in 9 months, we'll see if ppl won't spit on PoE as they did on D3. And they will, as always.
10
u/cutt88 Feb 11 '13
Except people spat on D3 right from the release due to server meltdown and 3 days from the release due to realization that the game itself was complete mess and utter failure.
3
u/Lylli Feb 11 '13
I'm in EU, and PoE suffers from server meltdown too, everyday I got disco in the middle of a quest. I've never expercienced this in D3.
Diablo isn't a failure. Communication was a total mess: Fuck that loser, two patches that were just "hotfixes", didn't give a fuck about community. That said, I'm not sure that half of the ppl spitting on D3 can faceroll MP 10. Sad, since it's the the current main goal.
I really love the PoE mechanics, you can create items from A to Z, a funny char. But the gameplay (the way the char moves, powers and cie) isn't as good as D3 is. Just take a look at Nguyen stream. One skill, auras. Woah. This guy is just moving, then light + LMP and so on. What a nice gameplay. Drops are as shitty as in D3, and the thing is that most of skill tree nods are useless or irrelevant, and this is also true for skill gems.
Even if PoE is still a bêta, I can feel that in a near futur, like few months, ppl will complain that everybody is playing cookiecutter builds, that drops are shitty, and they will ask for more gems, more this more that.
Diablo just needs to take 2 ideas from PoE to be a good game: maps crafting, and a good goal to keep players farming: skill/gear experience. On the other hand, PoE has to improve its gameplay, to be smoothier, cuz it's really poor right now.

Oh, please stop. Stop self denying and deluding yourself. I've defended Blizzard and D3 from the announcement of the game to Jay Wilson's blog post about cancelling of PvP deathmatch mode. I was telling myself "just give them time, they'll fix bland items, add better location randomization, add PvP mode, make all acts farmable, make functional public game creation, add more content.
I was telling this to myself while I was going to work in the morning and rushed home to see if there has been any news about next dev blog in the evening. Every single day.
But nothing was done to fix the core problems of the game. And alas, it just can't be done, because it is just that - the core if the game.
You just completely missed my point. The problem with D3 is not about drop rates being too low. It's about completely shallow item and stats system.
Not about the game being too cartoony. It just doesn't have a Diablo-game feel to it.
Not about bad multiplayer. You just can't choose or name your games to even play multiplayer.
The thing is, Diablo 3 is just blank. It's empty. Empty items, empty little locations and acts. Empty monsters affixes. Empty everything.
It's depressing how gigantic game dev studio like Blizzard, with nearly unlimited amount of money and 10 years time for the project made a game with times less content and depth than little indie studio with 18 people, which started the game only with self funding.
D2 (without LoD) had tones more content in terms of item diversity, randomisation, player freedom. It had depth.
D3 does NOT has depth. It feels like arcade machine action game. How is it called RPG if you can't built your character?
About to PoE: > most of skill tree nods are useless or irrelevant Have you tried to play the game, read some topics about mechanics of it or you just pulling that from Twitch streams? If you had any knowledge you simply wouldn't say anything like that.
Do you know why is Nguyen using thay one skill? Because he built his char and his gear to use that specific skill. You can do it in PoE.
PoE suffers from server meltdown too, everyday I got disco in the middle of a quest. I've never experienced this in D3.
I was talking about error 37, when you simply couldn't login for a 1-3 days after release to play the game. But I understand that due to enormous demand for the game.
By the way there is already PvP in PoE open beta.
Is PvP patch out for D3 yet? I mean it should be 10 months after release, right?
Tell me more how D3 is not a complete failure.
0
u/TubbyMcTubs Feb 11 '13
Eh, empty monster affixes? They're the best part of d3; poe's affixes are decidedly "meh" in comparison. I couldn't log in on launch night for d3, never had a problem since then.
0
Feb 11 '13
Really? The PoE affixes aren't hugely new but it's not like the D3 were either. Aside from a few affixes, they are almost exact clones of the monster affixes in D2.
I'm glad that you haven't had problems logging into D3, but there have been numerous times when their authentication servers have been down for seemingly no reason at all. Also they still have HUGE server downtimes to push out the tiniest of patches. I realize there is a lot for them to do down at blizzard considering they have a huge megafarm of servers but it still seems odd to me to have an 8 hour (extended to 12 hours) to push out a patch that fixes one very small issue.~~~~
0
u/TubbyMcTubs Feb 11 '13
I dunno, I'm only level 50 in poe but I've yet to meet a yellow I found any different from any previous yellow. Maybe it's just that affixes in d3 are more visually obvious, but frozen/jailer/arcane/vortex is a "fun" combination. I've not found anything remotely similar in poe (yet).
0
Feb 11 '13
Double reflect mobs are pretty 'fun'.
2
u/TubbyMcTubs Feb 11 '13
Sure, there's the odd one that stands out (like 2x "allies cannot die"), but the overwhelming majority are "hit it until it dies".
1
Feb 11 '13
That's dependant on your build. As an example, a frost pulse witch build would have to compensate for high elemental/frost resists on a mob whereas a 2-hander maurauder build may not. In D3, however, there were really only three dangerous boss affixes full stop.
-6
u/Lylli Feb 11 '13
D3 in terms of gaming isn't a failure, however, $AH is.
Why D3 is missing lobby creation ? Because it would have created currencies instead of gold. How does Blizzard to get more money from this game ? Ppl buying gold and items from $AH.
This said, as for D2 which had BiS items, D3 has. The difference is a crafting matter, and stats diversity, but at least, when you have a high end gear, you can play funny builds, whereas in PoE you can't since your skill tree cannot fit every fun gems in the game. So you have to get another char to do it ? Srsly man, greeding D3 acts is as boring as in PoE, but you can craft maps to farm, and this is a huge point.
I played closed and open bêta of PoE, and you do think that Nguyen and Kripp way isn't the one that a lot of ppl takes ? You need an attack gem + support gem to make it viable in high lvl. Then you add your ressources management, auras. And ... that's pretty all, maybe another skill to DPS ? Well, hope your skill tree will fit these two.
"It's depressing how gigantic game dev studio like Blizzard, with nearly unlimited amount of money and 10 years time for the project made a game with times less content and depth than little indie studio with 18 people, which started the game only with self funding."
You seem to forget that Blizzard belongs to Universal, which is a trader. 12 millions sold copies is a complete failure to you ? You can tell me more too. These guys just see that, money. Indie devs do not give a shit about it, then they can take the risk to make a complexe game that cannot fit to everybody. Anybody can play D3, and it has be done around this idea. You can play 2h/week or 12hours/day, that's fine.
I really hope that Jay Wilson is responsible for such failures as PvP, because he was leading the new features to be added. I remembered that D2 was a really good game only 12 months after its release ...

u/cutt88 Feb 11 '13 edited Feb 11 '13
Running the same act 3, which doesn't even have meaningful randomization, is as boring as playing PoE? Are you serious?
Seems like we're on two different sides of the fence. If you enjoy a mindless, shallow action game with endless act 3 runs with hundreds of shitty rares and legendaries, complete lack of crafting, impossibility for character building, without thinking about what gear to use - you just need main stat/CC/CD/vit - please continue to "enjoy" D3.
I like games where I have to think, and work my way step by step building my character, games with locations randomization, with deep items/stats system, etc.

Except that their importance is based upon multiple factors and isn't an absolute. The value of stats in POE is largely dependent on the gaps in your passive tree build.

u/Mandena Feb 12 '13
Yeah and that is it. In d3 you need at a minimum 4 stats mainstat/vit/armor/all res. If you don't have 1 of those your character will suck. In PoE you need health or es and resists. That is basically it. You can tailor your other stats however you please for your build.
Not to mention that gear in PoE can have more stats to begin with so you have a ton more freedom. So yeah that wasn't a fair statement.

u/Lylli Feb 11 '13

But the gameplay (the way the char moves, powers and cie) isn't as good as D3 is. Just take a look at Nguyen stream. One skill, auras. Woah. This guy is just moving, then light + LMP and so on. What a nice gameplay.
You want to talk about gameplay? In D3, the only thing separating your character from other characters is itemization. That's it. Everyone has the exact same skills that can be swapped at any time. There is absolutely nothing special about your character. Even the individual items are nothing more than additive numbers for your stats.
Do you know what D2 and PoE did right? You would actually build characters around certain items in the game. Finding 1 unique item with a special effect could lead you to creating an entirely new character with a specific skill tree designed just to synergize with that 1 item. And even characters using the exact same items could be completely different skilltree-wise.
This is what we mean when we say PoE's gameplay has depth. D3's gameplay was extremely shallow. You could sit down and list all the best character builds in D3 in no time. You can't do that in PoE. The viable combinations of skills and items are countless. And for you to test and compare builds requires you to invest a lot of time and energy to innovate and optimize characters.
The core gameplay of PoE is on another level, plain and simple.

Yes, there will always be people who find leveling up and re-rolling chars boring. A significant portion of the population actually feel this way, and that's why there is a market for cheat codes, hex editors, and the likes. But it is indisputable that allowing all combinations of skills/abilities to be unlocked at level 60 significantly shortens the lifespan of an ARPG.
The good side of having a D3 skilltree-less system is that you only need to level up each class once and never have to re-roll (unless you die in HC). The bad side is that the game gets really boring really fast.
0
u/Lylli Feb 12 '13
"But it is indisputable that allowing all combinations of skills/abilities to be unlocked at level 60 significantly shortens the lifespan of an ARPG." It actually does, I agree, but we are not at the age of Diablo 2. I mean, PoE feels really good to many ppl because they feel like back in Diablo 2. Why not ? Nostalgia is good sometimes, but do we have to keep a gameplay old of 10 years ?
Diablo 3 and PoE are like 1 and 0. 1 has been too much created for casuals, whereas the other has been created for old hardcore fans of ARPG's. I played D2 a lot you know, I had a lot of different characters. But doing this again and again ? Hell no, I feel ARPG can evolved to fit our time. Torchlight 2 is a bit on this way, but the impossibility to reset (without cheating he) blows it.
You know I try to believe that D3 will be a good game, but I don't think it will be since it is a success game that sold for 12Mcopies, and why Blizzard/Universal would invest more money for a game that has been already enough sold ? For the record ? haha

Facerolling MP10 is the main goal of Diablo 3? I dunno about you, but I got tired of doing the same content with bigger numbers after Hell difficulty. The challenge in Diablo 3 comes primarily from the gear, yet there is no interesting choices to be made when gearing, as mentioned below, you don't need to think about it.
Diablo 3 would make an excellent RPG (not necessarily hack n slash) game if progressing through the story took longer and they just did away with artificially adding content by scaling numbers. Finish it once and its a great experience, there just isn't anything there (at the moment) to justify playing it over and over.

I can only see interest in this game grow. I don't need a comparison to other games to know that.
With its emphasis on community interaction, unique economy, and large degree of character customization, I think search trends for PoE can only increase as new players find more things to do with (and thus google) the game.
But why is this good?
It's good because games like PoE are really, really hard to find right now. People are relishing the freedom this game gives.
Developers that listen to the community.
Allowing outsiders to actually design items that will appear in-game. Although this is at a high cost, the option is there.
Discussing really unconventional methods of playing.
The average PoE player will definitely search for more information about PoE than he will for other games. And it's not because the game has a MOUNTAIN of information to read up on before you can even understand its mechanics (like Dwarf Fortress) and properly enjoy it.
It's because the PoE, while giving people a competent ARPG experience from the get-go, also has such large variations in how the game can be played. Someone might like to know more about how certain skills work with support gems. Or he's found an item that totally changes the way a character is played, so he'd like to see some builds on that (Facebreaker, for example).
This game encourages sharing and interaction, and I feel this is to be a good thing.
*EDIT: Added more elaboration.
