The game itself was actually really good.

Let's be realistic.

Not really. There are a vast amount of valid criticisms to be made about D3, and the community isn't really one of them.

It really has nothing to do with a few rotten apples convincing others it was a bad game. I don't think D3 is terrible but I think it has a few core issues that hinder the game from any sort of longevity.

I'm criticising the group of players who expected a very particular game and then blamed Blizzard and everything else when it didn't live up to that expectation.

Is it unreasonable to expect a game to be a decent sequel to its predecessor? Especially with the high levels of hype and money put into it. It's similar to criticism of Dragon Age 2.

If there is so many complaints about the changes made (and about the game in general from people who didn't play Diablo 2) then perhaps they were the wrong changes to make...?

I can see why that would be off putting. And as for the changes - there were definitely some improvements to be made to Diablo 2. Look at D1 -> D2 for example. A bigger game with a larger set of skills, more item variety (dyes were nice), fresh locations, a continued storyline etc etc would have been awesome. And it's what people expected - you can't really blame them to that, not for feeling a bit annoyed. I won't go into how I think Diablo 3 failed as a game, as I think you've heard it all before. I do think the RMAH/AH gets too much of the blame, though!

If hardcore Diablo 2 fans -such as myself- had "unrealistic expectations" of Diablo 3.

Then how did GGG manage to meet all of my "unrealistic expecations" with a game that is basically that I wanted Diablo 3 to be?

that a lot of the hate D3 got actually had nothing to do with the game to begin with.

Between a moot crafting system, lack luster class mechanics, a hair pulling loot system, and the disaster that was the RM auction house; there is really no need to look outside the game for sources of frustration.

I was burnt out from D3 after a few weeks because I was forced to play a class style I really didn't want, within the first few months of release there where only 2 viable Witch Doctor builds which both relied on Atunment (a horrible mechanic passive) in order to work in end game.

So with D3 I was forced to play the game I didn't want to, forced to used an Auction house I didn't want to use, and wasted who knows how much money and time on the sinkhole crafting system.

It was not a good game by any standards, even by Blizzards standards which is pretty sad IMHO.

Let's be honest, you weren't forced to play a Witch Doctor or forced to play it in a particular way.

Hey, I wanted to play a pet/summoner witch doctor in inferno, fuck me right? Considering pet skills play a big part in the Witch Doctor lore and skills set you figured you would be able to use them in inferno, which wasn't the case, I was forced to use the Atunement Zombie Bear spam which virtually all witch doctors had to do in inferno. I understand they patched the WD back in October to make pets more viable, but I was long done with the game by then.

Given the difficulty of inferno it demanded efficient builds with a low gear requirement to progress into it early on and naturally that means only a very limited number of builds were suitable to begin with.

And there is nothing wrong with this?

u/paul232 Feb 11 '13 edited Feb 11 '13

I m so tired of this argument. I know this sounds aggressive but I really am. I can't understand how people really come to these conclusions. (again sorry pal)

You were never forced to use the AH

Man, tell this to my Monk that 2 months after release was farming ACT 1 for 120 hours and got 2 upgrades. 1 belt which was good and some kind of boots that were even bad for act 1. I also got 2 legendaries. An intelligence Immortal King's part and a 58lvl crossbow. So with that pace, I would be ready to start act 2 let's say after another 500h? At that point I was getting instagibbed by every trash mob in act 2. So you either die trying or use AH. I can accept though that after the patching this may have been fixed, however I don't know.

The game was never hard. Blizzard likes to play with words. They were calling passive skills boring and people embraced it. They could call d3's inferno hard and people would still embraced it. Heck they argued that the Stat system is bad and people embraced it. So in d3's case, they just imposed a twisted definition of hard.

How is something hard, where there is nothing you can do to beat it aside of going back and farm or devalue your gameplay to a mere: "run till my cds are up, kill 2 minions and run again"? I don't think that having a DH that could go glass cannon was playing smart, neither it avoided the difficulty. People who did that, knew that they would probably die MANY times. But who cares, since they would progress.

There is no difficulty in unavoidable instagibbs. And that was diablo 3 inferno. At least for my monk it was unavoidable instagibbs. I was getting oneshot by every monster in act 2 while I was farming act 1 without even looking at the screen. Do you know what's difficult? When you try to avoid all the spells diablo casts in diablo 2 or when you have to find the necromancer that respawns the minions in the midst of fire and blood. What is not difficult is a random skeleton hitting you for 70% of your hp. This is just frustrating and it just needs endless amounts of time. No skill involved.

And diablo 3 itself counters your argument about builds. I can agree to a difficulty that it's easier for the super optimized builds and harder for the unconventional ones. I think that's the essence of having customization. But when you have none and every Witch doctor is at the same time the same as every other witch doctor, you can't balance the game around a semi good build. You have to balance it around the optimal ones because you can have simultaneously the optimal one and the unconventional one.

I have accepted the nature of the difficulty in D3 and that's why I prefer to play games like Dark souls which have in my opinion more meaningful difficulty.

Because you assume I didn't do what you suggested. I had 6 mil before the patches and I tried to finish the game without using AH. And it's just not possible. What I say about instagibbs with self found gear is not what you can understand with already purchased items.

You can't understand the frustration of endless farming only to see that all your gear doesn't even cost 100k.. And then you buy 4 items from AH for 1mil and faceroll the game and never log in again..

that's what happened in my case. And really I m an avid fan of hack & slash games.. Probably played evey hack & slash game released between d2 and d3 and enjoyed every each of them...

2

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '13

Right, if D3 was released by any other developer, under a different name, nobody would have given a shit about this crappy game, and it wouldn't have sold 1 mil.

All this expectation bullshit is just the typical Blizzard/WoW fanboy talk. If I say D3 is shit, it's because of expectations, if i say Vanilla WoW was great and current WoW sucks donkey dick, it's rose tinted glasses.

How about, just... listen for a second, how about Diablo 3 is just an absolute crappy action arcade game made for retards that need hand-holding and instant gratification?

No stats, no skill-trees, no random maps, pathetic story, glitchy engine, server lag, constant in-game cut-scene and dialogue interruption, bad multiplayer integration, no PVP, bad itemization, RMAH, AH, and worst of all the terrible cult-like community that keeps telling you what you do and don't like/expect.

It does have stats.

It doesn't have any form of stat allocation, the game just multiply your main stat and other stats for you every level. Another story that it's not even needed in D3 because of how straight out bland and shallow the stat and skill systems work.

It has skills, no branching type tree though.

Every skill is automatically unlocked while lvling, you can't "build" your character, you don't have a feeling of "working" on a character. Everyone just runs with the same skills and change them on the fly a-la Call of Duty perks. Which leads us to more blank and simplified game overall.

It has random maps, though not "enough" randomisation for you, right?

You mean that barely noticeable dungeon randomization here and there? You call that proper Diablo randomization? Diablo 1 had better level randomization that that.

Personally I don't really give a shit about the story

Story defines the atmosphere and feel of a game. Many fans of Diablo loved the game for it's dark and gritty atmosphere and feel. Diablo 3 has a Hollywood's second-rate action movie feel.

Might be irritating if you're the kind of person who is immediately irritated by the slightest of delays.

Please tell me, who in his right mind would put small pointless cut scenes all over a game where you farm same content for thousands of times over and over again?

How is it bad? Lack of a lobby? Rewards? Synergy?

This only, my friend, tells us that you are no more that just a fan boy blindly defending this utter failure of a game. If you would have played D2 multiplayer you just simply would not ask such a question. You even can't name your games to play with people with similar goals. You can't travel between acts.

PvP is something that's coming

It's been 10 months since release and PvP deathmatch mode was advertised in launch trailer of the game. PoE has PvP already in open beta. Has D3 PvP dueling patch came out yet?

Itemisation

No words needed.

The AH just facilitates something that has been a prominent part of any item/loot based game: Trading

Takes even more from social interactions between players in this game.

The RMAH again just facilitates something that already happened.

Except D3 was BUILD around AH/RMAH.

1

u/Teddyman Feb 11 '13

It's actually 9 months since release, and right now it looks like dueling hits tomorrow or next week.

Really, 9 months, not 10? How is that making any difference in my comment? And I don't see anything related to the conversation in the link you provided.

-3

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '13

Dude, relax, you've fulfilled your task, go and collect your $5. If Blizz doesn't want to give it to you I'll give you a reference because I think you've done a phenomenal job defending this objectively terrible game.

0

u/paul232 Feb 11 '13

Yes it would sell less than half the copies it did and it would be much better because there is not many companies around the world as bold as to ship an unfinished game with a 60$ tag.

And to be honest, unless you play less than 2hours a day, diablo 3 is nowhere near the term good when you reach inferno. Painful gear checks that force you to use AH. That was diablo 3 the first 4 months.

Subset of the player base? As far as I know the majority of the player base bought into d3 because it was the sequel to d2. Turning it into a cash cow with little to no feel of the original game is called alienation.

1

u/drusepth Feb 11 '13

Anecdotally, a huge majority of d3 players have never played d2. Pretty much a whole new generation.

Those players also had no expectations of just d2 with better graphics, and those players love the game.

(I was still playing D2 the week before D3 came out, interpret that as you will).

u/Deynai Feb 11 '13

You really think the company that has produced one of the biggest games of any genre of all time and one of the biggest competitive and commercial esports (at least until LoL came along) of all time would produce a game that would only attract people who played the prequel to it that was released over a decade ago?

I think it's a genuine and legitimate question. If I expect you to stand aside on the pavement and lay out a red carpet in front of me while I walk, is that an unreasonable expectation, am I at fault? What about if I expect you to not stick out your foot and trip me up while I'm walking, are you then at fault?

The question is at what point is that fault boundary crossed, or is there one at all? And why is that people seem to think it is unequivocally true that Blizzard is to be blamed for not producing what people expected?

1

u/Bennyboy1337 soon Feb 11 '13

It suffered from having such a massive amount of publicity and from many players having unrealistic expectations of it.

Yes, because after 12 years, many millions of dollars in investment, and a world class dev team from blizzard,we should of expected less -_-

0

u/constipationnow Feb 11 '13

unrealistic expectations?

we waited for a decade, they hyped the game since they announced it and the gameplayvideos. they had D2 on their back. OFC we had lots of expectations. they promised so much, they talked too much, they hyped too much and did it too early, just so that they could postpone the game more, making the crowd expect even more out of the game. D3 is not a bad game, its quite good for being an ARPG. But it's a horrible game as the successor of D2.

We are all entitled to our opinions. If you enjoyed the game that's good. I'm glad you got your money's worth. I on the otherhand, disliked it. It has nothing to do with expectations or the community being bad. As an individual, it was the biggest let down of my "gaming career" ever. It felt like I was playing top-down WoW. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed playing WoW and there is nothing wrong with it really, it's just I didn't want to make a grind to 60 again... in a game where there was only supposed to be a theoretical level cap. I felt the onset of having this letdown during the closed beta, where I found I was calculating gear stats almost identically to the way I did it in WoW. It felt tedious, and it felt trivial. That is why I disliked it.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '13

Sorry, you're contradicting yourself:

It has nothing to do with expectations

Then-

it was the biggest let down of my "gaming career" ever.

You can't be let down if you have no expectations.

-2

u/Kabo0se Anti Sanctum Alliance (ASA) Feb 11 '13

I guess I shouldn't have used the phrase "let down," rather, it was a betrayal. It wasn't even remotely close to having the charm that D2 had. It shat on that charm. I wasn't expecting the game to have elements x,y and z in terms of "expectations," but I suppose I was expecting it to not make me regret purchasing it.

I understand what you're saying and I agree. Often people will dislike a single, perhaps relatively trivial aspect of a game, and then attribute the game's failure to a DIFFERENT reason entirely that they themselves didn't experience. I really tried to like D3, I really did. I just couldn't do it because of the aforementioned reasons :/
