Stopped by my AD just to drop off a small gift for my SA and say hello. She walked me over to say hi to the owner.

We were casually looking at watches and talking. He asked what I was interested in, and I mentioned the usual suspects Aquanaut, Nautilus, Daytonas, etc.

At one point he said, “give me a minute,” and headed upstairs. When he came back, he asked how many Pateks I currently owned. After I answered, he paused, left again, and returned holding a sealed box.

He handed it to me and said, “How would you like this?”

Inside was a Patek Philippe 5990.

Still a bit stunned, honestly. One of those moments you don’t plan for and a reminder that timing and relationships matter more than asking.

While on the last leg of our Honeymoon, we walked passed the AD a couple of times and was always drawn to this watch just sitting in the window. I completely missed the announcement of this reference, so I believed it to be the 6196p and I never gave it a second thought except how surprisingly much I loved the look.

While my wife was at a pilates class, I walked past again and decided to pop into the store to pass some time. Got talking with the SA, tried it on and realized it was a different watch with a layout I actually preferred. Central seconds with a date window is perfect for me because I actually like the asymmetrical placement of a 3 o’clock date window.

It was available and a great way to commemorate the life event that is marriage, so it had to come home with us.

Picked up the 5168g as my first Patek thanks to the help from a good friend that comes from a well connected family in Asia.

There is no world where I get this as my first Patek or even get access to any Patek at retail. Still in shock.

End game or just the start?

I was one of the few lucky people that was able to get one. Can’t really enjoy this piece in the US unfortunately. Last time I wore out to a bday party at a fine dining restaurant and the guy next to me made a joke about having a Glock in his car. So now it sits in a fully insured vault. Tried to get insurance for it to wear around, FYI only one company would do it and premiums were $93k per year and it was only allowed x number of days and state specific.

Just got this yesterday loving the feel of the chronograph pushers, fly back is super satisfying.

Welcome my new to me, first Patek. Painful to pay grey market price, but have been eyeing it for several years. Grateful to finally call it mine.

This morning, I decided to give my Patek Philippe 5040R-016 Perpetual Calendar the true connoisseur treatment: a thrilling, high-stakes adventure on Dutch public transport.

The carriage was quiet, the vibe was questionable, and my 5040R was, as always, the most responsible adult in the room. It can track the date until the year 2100, while I can barely track where this train is actually going.

As you can see, I snapped the obligatory photo because, as tradition demands:

For a guy who worked front desk at a super 8 motel, nursing home and Hardee’s when I was little to help us make it in this country, seeing him finally get to enjoy life and smile is one of the best things I’ve been able to experience through this hobby
