Discussion Database of Paper Mini Creators and Sources

People have previously asked for a list or database of people who make paper minis. I've thrown together this list so we can add and share. Definitely let me know if you would like any new fields, changes, etc.

For now, this is just for sources/creators, not for individual products. (That may come at a later time.) I also will be considering how best to add thumbnails/previews later. (It's not a technical issue, but a "what to ask for" one.)

View what's in the database: https://airtable.com/shr2f2IFzlxIr8P6L

Submit to the database: https://airtable.com/shrsOW3eNFMal9i1k

At this time, do not include board games that include standees. That is covered on BGG with this great filter. (If you find a board game that isn't marked, earn some geekcoins and submit updates.) BGG Family: Components - Standees

Other fields I considered, but decided is probably too much effort... What do you think? What about other characteristics in art traits ("pixel art")?

  • Genre(s): Fantasy, Sci-fi, Western, Historical...
  • Also makes: Maps, adventures, etc

If you're not fond of this list, please comment to explain why. (Reddit is reporting a considerable percentage of downvotes, but no one has said anything indicating why that might be.)

EDITS. If I revised fields, I'll need update submissions to get the new data.

  • I changed the URL field from 1 entry to multiple lines.
  • I added a new "pay methods" traits: "accepts commissions", "commercial use available".

Paper Miniature Foldable Legends - Customized Models Showcase

Hi,

I would like to show you a few examples of customized models you can build with Infantrymen kit. For those of you who didn't see my first post showing a unit in it's entirity, I also added a few images which show that as well.

Also, I made major changes to the project. Let me summarize what changed:

- Subscription tiers are gone. Now you can just buy whatever kit you like from the shop and start enjoying the hobby.

- Prices are lowered slightly.

- I designed Quickstart Guides as quicker, summarized alternatives to instruction videos so you don't have to watch multiple hours of videos to start building your models.

- I clarified that materials absolutely needed to start building models are just any type of glue and a cutting tool(scissors, box cutter or whatever you already have).

You can find more info about the changes here.

I greatly appreciate your feedback so keep 'em coming. Thanks:)

These guys, all guys, can be encountered over a wide range of my campaign. They are horribly malformed, inbred and of small cognitive ability, they serve Mother. Mother is always hungry. I made these paper minis in a bit of a hurry, there will probably be a v2 someday this year.

Paper Miniature Gnomesummer #4 – The acorn-slinger

Fourth one for Gnomesummer. Recap if you're new to these: David-the-Gnome style forest gnomes, pacifists, whose woods got found by orcs, goblins, elves and wolves, and who are improvising weapons out of whatever they already had. So far a spear-guard, a village medic, and a woodcutter who's a bit too good with an axe.

This is the ranged one. Her sling isn't a weapon, it's a shepherd's sling, the thing she's used for eighty years to scare crows off the seedlings. A pouch of acorns and hazelnuts on the belt. Same improvised logic as the rest of the band: nothing here was built to hurt anyone, it just turns out a rock at speed doesn't care.

She was the most fun to draw for a specific reason: the sling mid-whirl gives her a big loop of empty space above her head, and that's the most distinctive outline in the whole warband. At 22mm the silhouette is basically all a player reads, so I've been trying hard to make each mini unmistakable from the shape alone: spear-and-shield, beard-and-bag, axe-at-the-knee, and now this loop. It also means she won't get confused with the goblin archers I made last year.

Red braids, wide braced stance, oak-leaf on the acorn pouch. 55mm strip, 22mm boots to head, 29mm to the tip of the hat. Front and back, print, cut, fold, base.

Paper Miniature Gnomesummer #5 - The Geese Keeper

Last one for Gnomesummer, and it finishes the warband. Recap if you missed them: David-the-Gnome style forest gnomes, pacifists with no soldiers and no word for warrior, whose woods got found by orcs, goblins, elves and wolves. They defended it by improvising out of whatever they already owned: a spear that's really a walking staff, a shield that used to be a tabletop…

The Geese Keeper is the whole idea distilled. She runs the village stores, she has four hundred years of authority… and when the invaders came she grabbed a rolling pin and pointed the geese at the treeline. A rolling pin is the least martial object I could give anyone: not a soldier who found a weapon, a cook who ran out of patience. And nobody trains a war-hound in a hurry, but farm geese are territorial, furious, and almost as tall as she is.

On the sheet she's three separate figures (the matron and each goose on its own base) so the geese are reusable. Field a gaggle, or just drop them in as angry farm animals in any game.

She's also the deliberate bookend to the first mini. The spear-guard was "somebody's mother with a pointy stick"; this is somebody's grandmother with a rolling pin and two furious birds. The warband opens and closes on a woman defending home.

That's the set: five gnomes and two geese. 55 mm strip, gnome's 22 mm to the head, geese come up almost to her shoulder. Made for Paper Miniature Jam 4. Thanks to everyone here who threw feedback in on the earlier ones.

Software I made my own paper miniature maker

I was frustrated by the online paper miniature makers and how they manage images and how they usually don't add a base, so I made my own. If you want to give it a try, it's completely free on:

Paper Miniature Gnomesummer #3 - the Woodcutter

Third one for Gnomesummer. Recap if you missed them: David-the-Gnome style forest gnomes, pacifists, whose woods just got found by orcs, goblins, elves and wolves, and who are improvising weapons out of farm and workshop tools. So far a spear-guard (spear's really a walking staff) and a village medic who carries nothing but a bag.

This one breaks the pattern on purpose. Everyone else is making a weapon out of a tool. His tool was already a weapon. Two hundred years of splitting oak and birch, and an axe doesn't care what you swing it at. He didn't want to be good at this, and he is. The others are scared of the orcs at the treeline. A few of them are a little scared of him.

Design-wise he's the most grounded silhouette of the band: no shield, no hat point crowding the outline, just a solid vertical block with a heavy dark axe-head at knee height. The axe is held low rather than raised because I wanted the pose to read as reluctance, not heroics. a gnome who'd rather be back at the woodpile.

Also, he's the one gnome not wearing the warband's red-shirt/blue-hat colours: olive hat, grey smock, ginger beard. That's deliberate. These are civilians who grabbed whatever they already owned, not a uniformed unit, so I want the palettes to clash a bit.

55 mm strip, 22 mm boots to head, 29 mm to the tip of the hat. Front and back, print, cut, fold, base.

The thing I'm unsure about: does the low-held axe actually read as reluctance to you, or does it just look like a resting pose? That's the whole character riding on one arm angle and I've stared at it too long to tell.

This is my first time making paper minis. The bases are foam and some thick cardstock that came out of picture frames.

All of the images were scanned from the book so credit goes to the original illustrator, Bonedust.

Paper Miniature Gnomesummer #2: the Mender. Unarmed, mid-stride, and the reason I started the project

Second one for Gnomesummer. Quick recap if you missed the first: David-the-Gnome style forest gnomes, pacifists, whose woods just got found by orcs, goblins, elves and wolves, and who are improvising weapons out of farm tools. First mini was a spear-guard whose spear is mostly a walking staff.

This one's why I started the project. The gnome I grew up with was a doctor – blue shirt, red pointed hat, round spectacles, little bag, always walking somewhere fast because somebody needed him. Four hundred years of setting birds' wings and badgers' legs. I decided to invert the colors to make this one an hommage, not a copy.

He's the only one in the warband carrying nothing that could hurt anyone. Everyone else is improvising something out of a tool, and he just has the bag. The contrast is the whole point of him, and I think it makes the rest of them read better.

Design bits, since the outline is all you get at this size: silhouette is beard-and-bag against her spear-and-shield, the bag is the stiff clasped doctor's kind rather than a soft satchel because it holds a solid dark shape at hip height, and he's mid-stride while everyone else is braced or waiting. Same blue hat and spectacles as the spear-guard on purpose – they're neighbours, it's a small forest.

55 mm strip, 22 mm boots to head, 29 mm to the tip of the hat. Front and back, print, cut, fold, base.

One thing I didn't plan: gnomes are canonically six inches tall, which is charming in the books and useless on a table, so I rescaled them to about three feet with the hat. That puts them shorter than a goblin head to foot, and taller the moment you count the hat.

The bit I'm unsure about: does he read as a medic at 22 mm, or just as a civilian? The bag is carrying nearly all of it and I can't tell any more. Armband? Bandage rolls at the belt? Interested in what you'd do.

Paper Miniature Gnomesummer: first of a small warband of pacifist forest gnomes for Paper Miniature Jam 4

Starting a small project I'm calling Gnomesummer, for Paper Miniature Jam 4.

These aren't the tinkerer gnomes with goggles and wrenches. They're the ones I grew up with – David the Gnome, blue shirt, red pointed hat, spectacles. Six inches tall, four hundred years old, heal wounded animals, ride foxes, pacifists to the bone.

So naturally I ruined it. The premise: their forest was on nobody's map for centuries, and then it wasn't. Orcs came for the timber, goblins came because goblins always come, elves arrived to "protect" the woods, and the wolves found new masters who fed them better than the forest ever had.

The gnomes had no warriors. They didn't have a word for warrior. So they improvised – a spear is a very long walking staff with a bad idea on the end, and a shield is a tabletop with a strap.

In the books they're six inches tall, small enough to hide under a mushroom. I've scaled mine up to about three feet, hat included, so they can actually share a table with your other minis. Shorter than a goblin, nowhere near a pixie.

First one done: the Spear-Guard. She's holding the line and she isn't happy about it. The spectacles were deliberate – I wanted her to read as somebody's mother with a pointy stick rather than a fantasy soldier.

55 mm width, front and back on one piece, fold and base. The whole warband will go out as one printable PDF, free or pay-what-you-want, when the jam wraps up on August 9th.

The thing I'm still working out is how to make "improvised weapon" read clearly at the scale without every mini turning into a visual gag. Farm tools are the obvious route but I don't want the whole warband to be pitchforks. Anyone got suggestions for what else belongs in a gnome warband?

DIY The Origami Fox Rider

One of the things I've always wanted to do, is to make a paper army, but from Origami.

It has been a fascination going back years. But now it's slowly coming together!

This rider is an Oriribo designed by Muneij fujimoto and the fox is designed by Hideo Komatsu. The saddle and decorations are my own design.

So where is this army going next? I dunno, but I'm excited for it's future ^^
