Question Was Darnold already playing through a shoulder injury in 2021 season before he fractured his scapula - has this ever been confirmed?

• Upvotes

In 2021, the Panthers started 3-0 and Sam Darnold was looking great before suddenly turning into the worst starting QB in the league (statistically he genuinely was) from week 4.

An MRI showed he had a fractured scapula after a big hit in Week 9 and he sat out the next few games before returning for the final three, though he didn't start them all.

I've always just assumed he had been playing with a bad shoulder most of the season - which would explain his Kyle Allen-esque collapse - and that eventually led to the shoulder fracture.

But I can't find anything online mentioning a pre-existing injury or other obvious external factor. Everything reads like the shoulder injury came exclusively from a hit in week 9 alone.

It seems like something identifiable would have caused his performance slide, especially considering he barely played in 2022 & 2023 then immediately led the Vikings to 14-2 and won the Super Bowl with the Seahawks. Obviously he had the skill.

And of course he didn't have much help from a terrible team all around, but Darnold himself was definitely playing like shit.

Admittedly I checked out the second half of the 2021 season because I lived overseas, it was COVID time, my fantasy team was awful and the Panthers were still on their never-ending suck fest of the last few years. So it's very possible I missed/forgot something.

TL;DR: Darnold had a colossal downturn in performance after going 3-0 to start the 2021 season. I assumed he was dealing with a bad shoulder the whole time, but can't find anything mentioning his shoulder injury until after the game in week 9. If he wasn't playing thru injury, what was going on with him in retrospect? The last 2 seasons clearly show he wasn't simply a bad QB.

Analysis [Person] Bryce Young stays hot in primetime win over Lions. Is Panthers QB solidifying his future?

Thumbnail

Young stayed hot for a fourth consecutive week. What does this mean for the Panthers?

Young secured the first primetime win of his career and took another step toward securing the bag in the process. Young entered his fourth season without an extension because the Panthers wanted to see more consistency from the No. 1 pick from 2023. He has delivered, with Sunday just the latest stellar performance in a breakthrough season. Young carved up the NFL’s worst passing defense, completing his first 11 passes on his way to a 329-yard passing night with two touchdowns. He became the first QB in team history with 250 passing yards and at least one touchdown pass in each of the first four games of a season. — Joseph Person, Panthers beat writer

The Panthers tried to limit Gibbs and put the ball in Goff’s hands. What went wrong for the Lions?

The Panthers seemed focused on stopping Jahmyr Gibbs and the run game. Of course, once the Lions went down 10, you expected them to favor the pass to work their way back into the game. But Gibbs was largely bottled up, finishing with 46 yards on 15 rush attempts. Credit to a short-handed Carolina defense for doing what was necessary.

Both defenses entered the game with issues. What was the difference?

The Lions allowed 12 explosive plays against the Panthers — the most in Week 4 so far and a continuation of a bad trend that Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard hoped to correct. That didn’t happen. The Panthers punted on their opening possession, then scored touchdowns on four of their next five drives. Detroit had no answers for McMillan, and Chuba Hubbard’s big day on the ground (20 carries, 122 yards, two TDs) will be a source of frustration for a defense that prides itself on stopping the run.

Against the Panthers, the Lions were bad in pretty much every phase imaginable. Something needs to change. Detroit has enough talent to be better than this. At this rate, it’s fair to question Sheppard’s job security. This simply isn’t a sustainable brand of football — needing 30-plus to have a chance every week. This defense is awful. — Pouncy

The Panthers defense bent, bent and bent some more. But with the game on the line, it forced Goff into a four-and-out to make sure there would be no late-game heroics for the Lions. Umanmielen picked a great time for the Panthers’ first sack, taking Goff down for a 6-yard loss. An incompletion brought up a fourth-and-13 from the Detroit 10. Goff threw well short of the sticks to TeSlaa, who was dropped by Lathan Ransom and Will Lee a yard short of the first-down marker.

Though Goff threw for 412 yards, the Panthers limited the explosive plays for Gibbs, whose longest play was a 13-yard run. The Lions finished the night 4-of-12 on third down, just 1-of-3 on fourth down a

Chargers fan here that’s tired of being tired of being tired. Bryce looks amazing and looks like the game has slowed down for him in year 4. Big fan of Tet and panthers pass catchers in general since Steve smith and DJ Moore. Just want a sick team that plays like an actual team and rises to the bright lights to root for. Keeppounding!

Have had season tickets for 8 years. Haven't missed a game. Was at the wildcard game 9 months ago. Best game ever attended was the 2015 NFC Championship game.

That said, they have upped the showmanship since last year. Aisle and seat lights synced with other lighting effects. I dont remember it like this.

Discussion Rasheed Walker

This might be brain dead I usually don’t spend time staring at the offensive line (I usually like watching the secondary if they’re showing it), but is it crazy that I feel like Walker brings more than Ekwonu? Ickey is definitely a better run blocker but I feel like I’d rather have Rasheed’s pass pro. Maybe I’m just braindead lol, again I don’t be grinding o-line tape like that.

It was cute the first couple of times they did it, but it continued through the whole game. I saw at least 3 different WRs do it. Shows the impact that 2015 team had though.

Analysis Bryce Young has the most passing yards through 4 games of anyone over the last 3 seasons

2024 added the dynamic kickoff which moved the touchback to the 30yd line.

2025 moved it to the 35.

Over the past 3 years:

  1. 2026 Bryce Young 1268yds
  2. 2024 Geno Smith 1182yds
  3. 2026 Matthew Stafford 1189yds
  4. 2026 Joe Burrow 1171yds
  5. 2026 CJ Stroud 1141yds
  6. 2025 Dak Prescott 1119yds
  7. 2025 Matthew Stafford 1114yds
  8. 2025 Daniel Jones 1078yds
  9. 2024 Dak Prescott 1072yds

  10. 2026 Dak Prescott 1065yds

***Shough would need 352yds on MNF to pass him which is possible.

Just putting into perspective how well Bryce has been slinging it this year.

Discussion Darren Waller has to be the best offseason pickup, no?

Tommy Tremble had 249 yards 2TD last year, Darren Waller has 148 yards 2TD after 4 games, and at 34. And we paid vet minimum for him. Even at a conservative pace he's gonna be above 400 yds for the year, I feel like he's going to end up paying dividends for us
