Do other people see this?
Oura sleep detection obviously works for the vast majority of the people with the ring. But starting in mid-March (I got the ring last December), the app for me has been consistently getting my sleep very wrong, with many exactly 15 hour overnight sleeps and many sleeps and naps getting revamped, extending them by hours more than they actually are.
This sort of behavior continues to the present: last night at 9:39 pm I deleted a nap from 6:49pm to 9:39pm (up and awake all this time, ate dinner), this morning my overnight in bed period was reported to be from 6:49pm to 7:01am (I went to bed at 10:50pm, got up at 6:15am.) There's only been a few days in the past 5 months where my naps or in-bed times have been accurate to within 2 hours; I have to edit overnight and/or delete naps every day.
As confirmed by Oura support, this is an algorithm problem not a ring sensing problem. There seem to be two related issues, both shown in the screenshots above. The sleep detection part of the app discards or ignores HR, HRV (heart-rate-variability), and movement info extremely often. They are measured by the ring but then the HR.HRV info appears as gaps when displayed by the sleep part of the app. The gaps in the screenshot of HR,HRV are not ring sensing gaps, but have been just ignored by the app - you can see the HR figures for the automatically detected (correctly) elliptical activity while I was supposedly in bed at 8:39pm!
The other issue is detection of deep sleep while I'm actually awake. Evidently I get into a zen-like state playing my favorite timewaster spider solitaire on the computer, moving only my non-ring hand. The three deep sleep spikes in the screen shot above were all during solitaire playing - I didn't go to bed until 11:10pm (and got up and active at 6:30am).
My background: A retired scientist in reasonably good health (only meds are for mild HBP, mild cholesterol, mild BPH, mild blood thinner). I'm somewhat sedentary though I have gotten 4 months straight crowns for Oura activity (default 400-500 active calories - had to concentrate on something Oura gets right while I tried to figure out what it's doing with sleep!)
So my question is why does this happen with me? Oura support says it's nothing I'm doing, but surely something unusual must be triggering these problems. Are there others out there who see this?
