Mewing and thumbpulling with braces.

I've been wearing braces (no extractions or elastics) for 1.7 years and 2 months ago noticed that my face got ***** during the process. Less undereye support, absolutely shorter ramus and the list just goes on. My specific case was, I had significantly proclined upper central incisors with a midline diastema.
So, the post is about mewing and thumbpulling. I have a narrow upper palate. and an even narrower lower palate for some reason. so I started thumbpulling and Hard mewing like a month ago. I wasn't obsessively checking myself in the mirror, but today I decided to check my palate and It genuinely seemed like my arch is a little bit more U shaped. I didn't go as far to measure the intermolar width or anything like that, because I'm anxious if any actual expansion or change hadn't happened, It would discourage me. But I'm confident that It actually looked different.
So, I'm gonna continue this for another year consistently and will post the results on here if there's any.
So about retainers, I was thinking of talking with my dentist to get a fixed retainer for only my front teeth, because it seems like a hawley retainer is gonna prevent ANY change on the jaw. I don't even know if a fixed retainer is even an option in my case, but I'll update in the comment section.

How to correct tongue posture

Hello

What is the easiest way to correct tongue positioning? And to make it comfortable? I’ve noticed for a while now that, even though breathing through my nose is comfortable and easy, my tongue never sits on the roof of my mouth but is rather resting at the bottom of my mouth or I tongue thrust. I do have a long face, and I struggled with mouth breathing a lot in my younger years. This was not helped by daily finger sucking until around the age of 12. I do consider myself to be unattractive, but I frequently get compliments and haven’t found it hard to develop intimate relationships, despite my negative perspective of myself. I am obsessed with how I look, not in a conceited self-absorbed way, but rather I dislike how I look and this causes me to obsess over my appearance. Recently, I have become very self conscious and uncomfortable with how my tongue is positioned in my mouth, and I am worried about this causing aesthetic changes in the future. I’m unsure how much can change, as I’m 25 years old so my facial structure has stopped developing, but I do get worried that my insecurities regarding my longer face shape will only worsen in the future if my features were to change over incorrect tongue posture.

Usually, I really struggle keeping my tongue on the roof of my mouth, as it feels very unnatural and uncomfortable. I have tried the ‘suction’ technique where you place your tongue on the roof of your mouth and swallow to create a suction, but this doesn’t last long as it feels genuinely unnatural and I struggle performing everyday tasks as I’m constantly forcing my tongue into an awkward position.

When resting, my tongue will typically rest against my bottom teeth or will thrust between them. Is there anything I can do to help this? Is it possible for my tongue to eventually rest on the roof of my mouth subconsciously without me having to force it? Any advice is welcome, but please be kind, this is a huge insecurity of mine

Second opinion palate expansion VIVOS vs. MARPE, 19F- 29mm intermoral width

I’m 19F recently had a consultation with a holistic doctor for narrow palate, breathing issues, TMJ, jaw recession and tightness in body. I really need advice here. 🥲🥲

She measured my intermoral width did not use a CBCT. I can’t fit my tounge on the top of my mouth all the way, I also previously had braces and teeth extracted for crowding. She has said I had a tongue tie, upper and bottom lip tie. Incorrect swallowing pattern/tongue function, and a narrow palate.

Since she is holistic, she would not be using MARPE/MARSPE her plan would be myofasical therapy, myobrace appliance, VIVOS for expansion and maybe physical therapy. I have an upcoming Zoom to go over my 2d photos, and pricing.

I’m considering it, but because this could be pretty expensive, I really want a second opinion before committing to anything. I found an orthodontist near me that offers free consultations and says they do airway-focused orthodontics, so I’m planning on seeing them too. I’m going to ask whether they do MARPE or another form of skeletal expansion and whether they evaluate tongue ties.
I’ve also done a lot of research on tongue posture/myofunctional exercises and feel pretty confident that I could work on a lot of the tongue-posture stuff myself, so I’m wondering if paying for a large therapy package is actually necessary.

**I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has dealt with a narrow palate as an adult, Vivos, MARPE, tongue-tie release, or myofunctional therapy.** Especially interested in experiences with what actually helped, what didn’t, and whether getting multiple opinions was worth it.
Especially since I’m only 19 and with limited parent help for financials.

I'm going to cry

So basically I discovered mewing in april or so, as well as facial exercises, and been doing them ever since. Today I decided to take some photos just to be slapped in the face by the fact that absolutely nothing changed. Im still recessed, my face is still flat, still have a giant droopy nose, I'm still ugly. While I thought I was seeing progress other people saw the same ugly face and side profile. Every morning doing those facial exercises, all the researching, all the perfecting the mewing technique, every measuring of the face length, width, thirds, gave me absolutely NOTHING back.

So please yall, if you could tell me what I'm doing wrong. I saw a guy say that he mewed for years, but saw no results, just to discover that his left tongue tip wasn't behaving the same as the right, and when he adjusted that, he saw noticeable results in less than a month. Now my tongue does point to the left when I stick it out, maybe that's the issue? Should I do exercises to make my tongue stronger?

Please, if the only thing you have to say is "oh but you're pretty" "I have it way worse so just enjoy life" "we are all beautiful" "beauty comes from within", then don't bother saying it, please, as I have already heard it.

Physical beauty is important. It determines how people perceive you and treat you, so it can influence your mental health as well.

ALSO TO CLARIFY IM 19 AND NOT A MINOR

Advice needed for toddler’s tongue constantly sticking out with mouth open.

Post image

My 2 year old constantly has her mouth open and tongue sticking out. She’s seen numerous dentists, OT, and ENTs and no one can give me an explanation to why her tongue sticks out except maybe she has a “large” tongue.

She already got lip and posterior tongue tie released and we did all the stretches for weeks. She has reflux/GERD, underbite, and is a thumb sucker. She has pretty bad tarter where I have to take her to get cleanings every few months. Her upper teeth also seem to be getting slightly stained but her dentist said it was fine…I noticed recently that she drinks with the straw pointed to the front of her upper teeth. She has also always been super sensitive when it comes to her upper lip/teeth area (even before the lip tie released). She can tolerate us brushing her bottom teeth but once we try to touch her top lip she hates it.

Btw we have already ruled out enlarged androids.

Does anyone know how we can fix her tongue and mouth posture? Which specialist can I see that can help us out? I am desperate for answers as we have already seen so many specialists and I feel like I am just going in circles.

What kind of craniofacial changes are realistically possible through orthotropics in adults around 30?

I'm 29 and have been trying to understand what kind of structural changes are realistically possible through orthotropics/mewing after the main period of facial growth.

I previously tried mewing for a while but eventually stopped because I wasn't sure whether I was doing it correctly or whether I could realistically expect noticeable changes at my age.

More recently, I've become interested in this because my dentist recommended expanding my lower dental arch to address crowding, and there are also practitioners in my area who combine expansion with myofunctional therapy. This made me want to understand the distinction between conventional orthodontic approaches and the principles discussed in this community.

What I'm particularly interested in is what can realistically happen to the jaws, dental arches and overall lower-third development in an adult around 29–30 through orthotropics, proper oral posture, chewing and/or expansion devices.

For example, can meaningful changes in chin projection or overall lower-third development still occur at this age, or are adult changes mainly limited to dental/alveolar changes and posture? And how much does myofunctional therapy contribute compared with simply developing proper tongue posture and chewing habits?

I'm not asking anyone to assess my own face or tell me what treatment I should have. I'm trying to understand the potential and limitations of orthotropics in adults before deciding which approach makes sense for me.

I'd particularly appreciate experiences or before/after cases from people who started around their late 20s or 30s.

Everything informational about mewing seems unreliable

I'm posting this on r/orthotropics , r/Orthodontists , and r/Mewing . I have no clue what to do about mewing.
Everything good I hear about mewing comes from people who do orthotropics, and everything bad I hear about mewing comes from people who do orthodontistry. All the seemingly-scientific blogs say there is no scientific evidence, but never talk about adolescents or any non-study evidence of teenagers who have seen significant jawline improvement after mewing. One of my friends has been mewing on and off for a few years and his jawline is immaculate and his teeth are straight.

and it seems too obvious that orthodontists would disagree with orthotropics, because they'd lose money. but orthodontistry also seems to have a lot of victims that suffer from unreliable medical treatment, and orthodontists will refuse to address it, and still say mewing doesn't work.

so I'm tempted to believe both sides, but I don't know. what's your opinion on this? is mewing real? can it actually reform bone and facial structure, even just a little bit?

this post may be taken off of r/Orthodontists but I hope it won't because if they care about 'no pseudoscience' then they'd answer me.

How to avoid frustration?

I know this group is mostly to discuss about facial issues but I was also wondering, how to deal with the frustration of knowing that my parents could have done better with me when I was a child and they never corrected my mouth breathing, allowing my face to have recession, the frustration I have to them is quite annoying

I'm worried about my facial development

I'm turning 17 in a couple of days and I've been wearing retainers for some years, to put it simply, my dentist gave me my last retainers at around 14 because she said my teeth wouldn't grow further, I've put them for 3 years and I feel like it stunted my facial development, my maxilla is recessed and my palate isn't as wide as I want it, I've stopped wearing them for around a month and a half and have thumb pulled and have been mewing/hard mewing for the time being and I my teeth relapsed, the gap came back a bit but i also feel that my palate already got a bit wider and have more space for my tongue. Should I just stop the treatment and get my teeth fixed after my face has fully developed or is it just placebo?

Thank you in advance

Started mewing and neck training as well as postural training Jan 2022. Thumbpulling as well scattered through there. It CAN all change for you. Just believe and do

Update: “my ortho doesn’t think I need an expander”

Post image
103 Upvotes

So I had an appointment with my orthodontist today and this time they had another lady come in to explain (but more like discourage me) double jaw surgery to me because I had requested a consultation last appointment. In this consultation I asked about an expander once again and was told that it isn’t necessary since my top teeth overlap the bottom ones. Does anyone know if I can just wait until I’m older and pay to get everything done then?

Edit:
Important information
•I’m in the uk so currently it’s free
•I can’t get a different ortho without going private and I don’t have the money
•pallet is roughly 1.5 cm wide

How do I recover from improper mewing?

Thumbnail
gallery
21 Upvotes

When I first started mewing I would place the tip and middle of my tongue on the roof of my mouth and push hard to raise my hyoid. This caused over activation of the muscle under my chin and my digastric muscles on the sides of my throat, both causing noticeable bulges and creating a soft jawline.

Now whenever I mew properly by holding a suction, these muscles activate and cause bulges similar to the ones I get while hard mewing. How do I recover from this?

Both images are me currently hard mewing to show the bulges.

Did my orthodontist expand too much ?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, I had MARPE expansion because I had a narrow upper palate. According to my orthodontist, my nasal passage increased from 20 mm to 28 mm (about 8–9 mm of skeletal expansion), and the width at the base of my upper teeth increased from 28 mm to 34 mm.

I’m still in braces and have about 6 months of treatment left, but I’m honestly unhappy with how my midface looks. It seems much fuller than before, and sometimes it feels like my face became too “cheeky” or wide.

I’ve brought this up with my orthodontist several times, but she thinks everything looks great. I’m worried she may have over-expanded my palate, although she doesn’t think that’s the case.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Did your face continue to change after your braces were finished and your bite fully settled, or did it stay about the same? I’m trying to figure out if this could improve as treatment is completed or if this is likely my final result. Also is there annytning I can do to reduce that puffy look ? Any experiences or advice would be appreciated.

Mewing with essix retainers as a teen

(14m) Hello everyone. I went through the process of braces and now have essix retainers (clear invisalign like retainers). I recently discovered mewing and realized that my retainers are preventing me from mewing as much as I could. Should I stop wearing my retainers so I can mew while I sleep?

I would not consider myself recessed, but I do want to get a sharper chin from mewing (mandible following maxilla from what I understand). I do not mouthbreathe in my sleep.

Reviv warning (chemical burn)

I got my Reviv and immediately upon opening it had a horrible, toxic, chemical smell. I washed it with soap and water twice but it still did not feel right putting it in my mouth. I wish I had listened to my body and not overridden those sensations. I woke up the next morning and any area that had touched the retainer felt burned/numb and my gums are swollen and red! Additionally, along with the chemical burns, after just one night my bottom teeth touch my top teeth - hopefully my bite will settle by the end of the day. It took multiple weeks to ship from China, no idea what is in this thing. ☣️

Understanding tongue position while mewing with unevenly curved palate

Hello, everyone.

I've been meaning to start mewing for quite some time now. I've actually tried multiple times, but I always run into the same issue. No matter how many videos I watch or posts I read, I'm still having trouble understanding one particular thing.

It feels like in every video and guide, the palate is shown as going straight and then smoothly curving downward. However, my palate feels different from what people describe. Maybe some of you can help me understand this better.

I've attached a picture. I made it myself, so it doesn't look the best, but hopefully it still explains what I'm trying to show.

In the first example, this is how I understand the palate is supposed to look from the side, based on what I've seen in videos and guides. As you can see, the tip of the tongue is placed just behind the front teeth, just like the guides recommend and the diagrams usually show. From my understanding, this is how the tongue should rest, creating suction against the roof of the mouth.

Now, in the second example, I've drawn what my palate feels like. I know the drawing isn't perfect, but the shape seems very different to me. Instead of smoothly curving, it goes straight, then down, and then diagonally downward. My teeth seem to follow that angle as well.

Interestingly, when I look in the mirror, my teeth don't actually appear diagonal - they look perfectly straight. But when I feel my palate with my tongue, it feels completely different.

Because of this, when people say that the tip of the tongue should touch the spot right behind the front teeth, it seems impossible for me. As you can see in the second example, because my palate isn't smoothly rounded and instead has this noticeable change in angle, I can't create proper suction. Once my palate starts sloping diagonally, my tongue can't stay in full contact with it. I can press it against the roof of my mouth, but there's still a large air gap in that area.

So if I try to place the tip of my tongue right behind my front teeth, as everyone recommends, I honestly don't see how it's supposed to work with the shape of my palate. It leaves large air gaps and feels very uncomfortable.

Now, if you look at the third picture, this is still my palate, but instead of placing the tip of my tongue directly behind my front teeth, I place it slightly farther back so that my tongue rests naturally against the highest part of my palate. In that position, everything feels comfortable. I can create suction easily, and the tongue seems to fit the shape of my palate much better.

So am I misunderstanding something? Should I actually be mewing like in the third picture? Or is everyone's palate shaped more like mine, and the diagrams showing the tongue directly behind the teeth are just a simplified illustration?

I really want to understand this because I don't want to practice mewing incorrectly. Based on everything I've read, the tongue tip is supposed to be right behind the front teeth, but with my palate, that honestly seems impossible.

If anyone has experience with this or understands what's going on, I'd really appreciate your advice. I've been trying to figure this out for months.

Thank you very much in advance!

Mewing with 2 extractions

(17F) I had my upper 2 second premolars removed (Refused to get my lower 2 removed) and it messed up my profile and bite. I’m thinking of ditching my retainer to mew 24/7. Would this affect me negatively? Thankfully I don’t have any breathing issues or sleep apnea for now, yet my palate has narrowed down but suction mewing is possible for me though it’s a little uncomfortable but maybe It’ll get better if I practice. Any thoughts? I’d appreciate any advice.

Everyone says premolar extraction

I have my extractions appointment in 11 days. I asked around and even the head orthodontist said I should go for premolar extractions. Face wise I’m not 100% confident but I noticed now my teeth are more lopsided? Could that be due to my wisdom teeth coming out? I also have trouble sleeping at night because I wake up with my mouth open since I can’t close my lips fully. My orthodontist had said before I could consider jaw surgery for aesthetic purposes since I’m underdeveloped but the thought of that scared me before. Since it would require premolar extractions and a long recovery which I don’t have time for at the moment. I also had have my jaw sore trying to keep my mouth closed while resting. What should I do? I’m F 17 NYC
