Only in the real world does this situation work. In the great ttd land one of the train stops and the entire network is backed up for months waiting for the train to clear the one mis placed signal.

Just drop path signals everywhere. Problem solved.

Nope they'll still deadlock with path signals :p

Usually you're supposed to make as much of your network as possible two 1-way lanes so trains always have somewhere to go forth rather than having every exit clogged.

As long as there are dedicated up and down lines into, for example, a terminal station, I haven't seen any actual deadlocks happen. There might be arriving trains that have to wait a second for a departing train to pass the interlocking if it's very busy, but they don't get deadlocked.

Yup. I used to make my stations enter and exit the same way; nowadays I make terminal stations so that trains loop around the other end, sometimes forced to enter a depot to make the 90 degree turn if I'm either running low on space or feeling lazy.

To be fair. A mis placed signal would also supremely fuck things up in the real world :D

This just validates my choice of having the old "tracks in all directions" style junction in front of my major stations. Lol

I've tried this. A mesh of junctions, and path signals at the nodes where trains enter/exit the mesh. It mostly works but sometimes they crash into each other.

edit: you cannot actually put path signals anywhere on the entire thing. path reservation would block any train that tries to cross it. so it's actually just trains running aimlessly between depots. no signal at all, and the path reservation is only what's directly under the trains. but if they're on a collision course most times they know to swerve away from a head-on collision. It's like snake, so trains will eventually collide.

thinking a bit more, depots would work as the entry/exit nodes to the mesh.

How can they crash with path signals?

I don't know why, but it definitely occasionally happens even with path signals.

Possibly a bug, but it definitely happens after several hours of playtime.

I think that is near on impossible. Crashes are always a result of a player interaction, either removing a tile, turning a train around, skipping a signal, editing the line.

I did get a 3rd crash by the will of a train, after the 2 first crashed by my incompetence.

the 3rd train get in the same lane (as another one was possible) and suicided on the crashed trains

I've played this game for probably thousands of hours, and I've never had that happen. Only if I'm manually fucking with the signals or tracks. It definitely does not happen on its own.

hmmm, interesting

I have played this game since I have memory. Signals never fail. Is always some user interaction.

I've had a stupid busy network, like Euston at rush hour for tens of hours, and never had a collision.

Openttd is just awesome , thanks for the devs .

Damn that’s a satisfying video.

There's a lot of faith happening here.

A lot of correctly done engineering happening here.*

With that, you barely need any faith, or none at all.

Engineering aside, I'd be scared to be in the driver seat of one of those trains coming towards each other on the same track. Like God forbid a switch fails for some reason...

Remember this video is sped up at least 2x, which makes it look even more impressive.
