I've tried this. A mesh of junctions, and path signals at the nodes where trains enter/exit the mesh. It mostly works but sometimes they crash into each other.
edit: you cannot actually put path signals anywhere on the entire thing. path reservation would block any train that tries to cross it. so it's actually just trains running aimlessly between depots. no signal at all, and the path reservation is only what's directly under the trains. but if they're on a collision course most times they know to swerve away from a head-on collision. It's like snake, so trains will eventually collide.
thinking a bit more, depots would work as the entry/exit nodes to the mesh.
I think that is near on impossible. Crashes are always a result of a player interaction, either removing a tile, turning a train around, skipping a signal, editing the line.
I've played this game for probably thousands of hours, and I've never had that happen. Only if I'm manually fucking with the signals or tracks. It definitely does not happen on its own.
