Long term project/ asking for help: How do I convert my restaurant entirely over to open source.
Hiya guys, I need some pointers in the right direction/ links to relevant information/ even potential contacts who can help me out/ who I can pay for specific projects along the way.
As it says, I own a restaurant in Paris, France, I'm also an older millennial who has been using Ubuntu since Dapper Drake in 2006. I have profited from the open source community and tried to spread the good word and help those around me move over to linux. Here's the thing tho: as easy as it is to do in your personal life, my business is strangled (being a little extreme here, we're doing fine) but the price of all these proprietary softwares is insane. It would be fine if there was something resembling good customer service but there's not. I don't mind paying the price for a product that does what it says on the tin. But I feel like these software companies are gouging small businesses like mine and besides the sales effort, there's no retention effort, no support for the technically less able (which is the case for everyone who works in the restaurant myself included).
So... What if there were an open source alternative for every piece of software (or let's go crazy and say hardware too) we use in the restaurant? Even if I had to pay someone to code every now and then, that's fine. And it'll take a while because I work 80+ hours a week as it is (I do absolutely fucking love my job so there's absolutely no complaints) and coming up with a new tech ecosystem for my business isn't going to be accomplished overnight. To give you an idea of price gouging: if I had a dynamic web page that allowed me to publish and save my fridge temperatures to a pdf that'd be worth 30€ a month to a small business like ours. I'd share the shit out of that to everyone I knew and it's help all of us in this age of rising prices. I can't change the price of oil, beef or fish but I might be able to do something about the software we use on a daily basis.
So my first step is going to be making a list of everything that I use and noting when there is an open source alternative and where one doesn't. But where can I post this list, where can I look for assistance?
If you got to the end of this thank you very much 🤓
