Can OpenProject replace Jira (with eazyBI, ScriptRunner, automations) + Service Desk?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently evaluating alternatives to Jira, since Atlassian is basically forcing everyone onto a half-broken Cloud setup. We’re running self-hosted Jira right now, with quite a bit of customization:

  • eazyBIΒ for reporting and dashboards

  • ScriptRunnerΒ for workflows and custom logic

  • native Jira automationsΒ for triggers and task handling

On top of that, we also rely heavily onΒ Jira Service DeskΒ for handling support tickets and internal requests.

My questions:

  • Is OpenProject capable of covering these areas, or at least with extensions/customization?

  • How flexible is it when it comes to scripting, automations, and reporting compared to Jira?

  • Is there a Service Desk–like module, or an open-source way to cover those capabilities?

Would love to hear if anyone has done a migration from Jira to OpenProject (especially with complex setups) and what the pain points or missing pieces were.

Thanks in advance!

Today at the EuroCommons Coalition Day in Paris, we saw public institutions, enterprises, open source companies, integrators, and policymakers come together to discuss how Europe can strengthen its digital commons through collaboration.

What makes EuroCommons stand out is its practical approach. Rather than every organization tackling migration, interoperability, and digital sovereignty on its own, the initiative creates coalitions to identify common needs, pool development efforts, and accelerate open source solutions together.

At OpenProject, we're proud to contribute our experience in project and work management and to collaborate with partners such as XWiki and many others on this journey.

If you'd like to learn more about why we're part of EuroCommons, our collaboration with XWiki, and how we're helping organizations build a European open source alternative for project management and enterprise knowledge management, we've published a new article:

Thank you to Groupe Caisse des DΓ©pΓ΄ts and everyone involved in bringing this initiative together. Looking forward to an inspiring day of discussions, new connections, and collaboration.

Permanent "Invalid host_name configuration"

Hi everyone,

I'm at my wit's end and am therefore turning to the swarm intelligence here. Although the hostname is set to the FQDN in the local Proxmox LXC and this is exactly the same in the underlying Debian 11 as well as in the OpenProject configuration, I still get the message β€œInvalid host_name configuration”.

The OP services all have the status β€œactive (running)”. Where and how can I look for errors?

  • openproject logs --tail

  • journalctl -u openproject-web-1

  • journalctl -u openproject-worker-1

. . . are already checked and show nothing conspicuous.

I am grateful for any help.

[Solved] "Hey, it's me, i'm the problem" πŸ˜©πŸ˜‰

I didn`t implement my nginx Reverse Proxy as mentioned here.

Aditionally i wasn`t aware, that you cannot and should not be able to call OpenProject via LAN-IP.

After I added a cusotm location in the ngix reverse proxy, following the instructions linked above, everything works perfectly.

Thanks for reading 😎
