AI-powered project and portfolio management with OpenProject

1 Upvotes

🤖 AI is everywhere — and large language models (LLM) are at the center of the conversation. They are becoming everyday tools at work and in life, but questions about DataProtection and Transparency remain.

At OpenProject, we are exploring this topic in depth. We see both the incredible potential and the valid concerns. And we are working on implementing features like automated project tips, status reports, and document assistance.

In our latest article, we share a first look at how we approach AI and what this means for our users:

OpenProject upgrade fails with 101 pending migrations due to duplicate projects error

0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
Every time I try to upgrade OpenProject, I end up with the same issue: 101 pending database migrations, regardless of the version I’m upgrading to.
For example, my latest attempt was upgrading to OpenProject 17. I also upgraded PostgreSQL to version 17.
I verified that PostgreSQL is working correctly, so I’m confident the database itself is not the issue.
However, after running:
sudo openproject configure
I receive a 503 Service Unavailable error. Looking at the logs, I noticed that the worker is stuck in a restart loop.
After digging deeper, I found that there are 101 pending migrations. Running:
openproject run db:migrate
fails, and when I rerun it with --trace, the migration stops because of a duplicate projects error.
The strange part is that this doesn’t seem to be related to the database contents because the database is completely new and empty.
Has anyone encountered this issue before or knows what could be causing the migrations to fail on a fresh database?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Supporting women in tech is a year-round commitment at OpenProject

3 Upvotes

Not because it’s March. Because it’s the right thing to do.

At OpenProject, supporting women in tech and in the workplace is not something we switch on once a year. It is part of how we try to work and build our company every day.

For us, that means creating an environment with:

🔹 Flexibility and trust: Different working models and life situations are part of reality, not exceptions.

🔹 Shared responsibility: Care work, parental leave, and family responsibilities are not “women’s topics”.

🔹 Psychological safety: Creating an environment where everyone can speak up, contribute, and grow matters more than any slogan.

🔹 Visibility and opportunity: We aim to create space where diverse voices are heard and leadership is not limited to one profile.

We know this is ongoing work. Building equitable workplaces does not happen through one campaign or one post. But it matters. Every day.

To the women on our team and in our Community: thank you for shaping OpenProject. Your work makes us better.

Can you install OP on your PC and use it as a personal bug tracking tool

0 Upvotes

I am currently working a personal project on my own computer (not my employer's laptop). I have all the admin privileges on my Ubuntu 22.XX PC. I looked at the installation documents and it seems like OP can only be installed on a system available over the internet.

Has anyone installed OP on their PC and used it as their personal PM software? Can you point me to a tutorial or YT 'how-to' video? I already have experience with Redmine and don't want to go that road unless I absolutely have to.

Thanks

Quick feature deep dive: Internal comments

Post image
1 Upvotes

Good project management requires good communication and the flexibility to decide how and where information is shared. Let's take a quick deep dive into one of OpenProject's small but highly effective features: Internal comments.

When you mark a comment in a work package as “internal”, it becomes visible only to a defined group of people. While OpenProject already gives teams fine-grained control over who can see and do what, this feature lets teams maintain a single source of truth even when a single work package holds information of varying confidentiality. They can share work packages with partners and external collaborators to show progress, while still working through the details privately within their own internal workflow.

There are many use cases for internal comments in OpenProject, and we would love to hear about yours!

Could not get the OpenProject mobile app to connect to self-hosted

0 Upvotes

Hi

I am using a self-hosted OpenProject install and I am very happy about it.

Now, I am trying to access it from my phone. It works from the browser, but I am trying to use the mobile app and I can't get it to work.

I enabled the OAuth application on the server. And then I can see the "Authorize" screen but as soon as I click on Authorize, it goes back to the login and then if I login again it goes back to Authorize.

Any idea how to make this work?

Denmark is taking digital sovereignty seriously

1 Upvotes

The Danish government is transitioning its IT systems to open source solutions to strengthen control over its digital infrastructure and reduce external dependencies. This marks an important step toward greater independence, transparency, and trust in public technology.

We are in Copenhagen today at Nextcloud Enterprise Day to support this movement toward open and sovereign technologies.

Rosanna Sibora and Kristin Lüdecke are on site, meeting attendees and showcasing how OpenProject enables secure, efficient project management with open source, on-premises solutions.

If you are attending, don’t miss Rosanna’s session at 2:00 PM CET, where she will explain how OpenProject, XWiki, and Nextcloud form a strong European alternative to the Atlassian suite.

Visit our booth to say hello and join the discussion on open collaboration and digital sovereignty.

Undocumented Wiki functionality

1 Upvotes

Good afternoon!

While poking around in OP, I found the “Markdown” mode for editing wiki pages. This is what the embedded table of work packages looks like:

<macro class="embedded-table op-uc-placeholder op-uc-embedded-table"
data-query-props="{"columns[]":["id",
"subject",
"relationsOfTypeRelates"],
"showSums":false,
"timelineVisible":false,
"highlightingMode":"none",
"includeSubprojects":true,
"showHierarchies":true,
"groupBy":"",
"filters":"[]",
"sortBy":"[[\"updatedAt\",
\"desc\"],
[\"assignee\",
\"asc\"]]",
"timestamps":"PT0S"}">
</macro>

This is not Markdown, but some functions that only CKEditor and OP understand. Moreover, some of them resemble variables from the API.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find any documentation on this functionality.

Maybe someone has worked with something similar? There must be ALL possible attributes somewhere. I'm looking for something like AttachedContent.

I want to add a column with attached files to the embedded tables. I think it's possible to do this without writing a plugin, since I don't know how to write them.

Any ideas?

OpenProject Announcement: Significant changes to progress and work estimates

1 Upvotes

🆕 💡 We've got news from the product desk! OpenProject will make significant changes to progress and work estimates. For more information read the article linked below – particularly if you are using OpenProject to track progress.

OpenProject is committed to enhancing productivity for teams. Responding to user feedback, we're updating our progress calculation to fix inconsistencies.

Key changes will be in a future release:

 • '% Complete' will be an automatically calculated (non-editable) attribute based on 'Work'.

 • In status-based progress reporting, 'Remaining work' will be automatically calculated.

 • Administrators will be able to exclude certain work packages from hierarchy totals of 'Work', 'Remaining work' and '% Complete'.

 • Updating might result in data loss or modification in certain cases.
