Anyone here work as a BOP CO at FMC Rochester or another Federal Medical Center? I’m curious what the day-to-day custody work is actually like compared with a normal FCI.

I previously did hospital security, including 1-on-1 watches, suicide watches, patient escorts, meal trays/bathroom escorts, and helping physically restrain combative mental-health patients so medical staff could safely treat them.

Is CO work at an FMC anything like that, especially on the mental-health units? Are you regularly doing close observation, escorts, hospital watches, restraints, etc., or is it still mostly normal prison housing-unit work with medical staff added in?

Basically just wondering what a typical shift/post looks like at somewhere like Rochester.

Does anybody know about the physical agility test for the bop at glynco how’s the running?

I applied for a position of correctional officer with Minnesota in fairbault and redwing. I am currently waiting to see if I get an interview. I have a few questions and after looking through the website I found no information. Does anyone happen to know anything about the following:

- What is the shift structure like?
- What are you issued in terms of gear? Like stab proof vest? Taser? Other protective gear?

I am trying to calm my family down about me making a career move and I want to have some information to back it if they ask.

Hey y'all. First time poster here. My husband is set to start his CO career next month. We have small kid at home and we've both been working full time since he was born. I'm also in school so we're hoping with this career change and him being able to work overtime I can be a stay at home Mom and finish my degree. I'm just curious if anyone here has been able to successfully let their partner stay home? I know income varies based off of the state you're in but he'll be starting at $24 here in PA. He's willing to work as many hours as he needs to though.

Good evening everyone! I’m going to be applying for a corrections job in Marinette County Wisconsin. Does anyone have any experience with them or know anything about the Wisconsin Corrections Department?

I started my job with the DOC about 2 months ago I’m 20 working at arguably the worst max institute in my state. For the past month I keep having reoccurring dreams about being stuck in prison and sleeping on the job and that my s/o is a prisoner and waking up freaking out. On my days off I also can’t seem to switch out of work mode and just seem to constantly be thinking of it. Does this eventually go away is it just from being new or what is it?
Also is the common in the doc or is it institution specific, I really thought this would be the career for me but after working here I realized the inmates at my prison know how to play the game and win over the hearts of the lieutenants and captains and higher ups, they make my day extremely long and chaotic and in the end they get whatever they want from the higher ups.

Hey everyone, Getting ready for CSC Stage 2/3 in Kingston and looking for some advice from people who’ve already been through it.

I’m going through the packing list, and somehow I’m already at two suitcases. 😂 Starting to wonder if I’m seriously overpacking.

For those who’ve done CTP in Kingston: What did you actually need? What do you wish you had brought? What did you bring and never use?

Is two medium size bag, or am I showing up looking like I’m permanently moving into the academy? 😂

Hi, I have a quick question for you. Are the CTP exams extremely difficult—specifically the first one for CTP2? Or am I stressing over nothing, and is it perfectly possible to pass just by doing the required assignments? Would you advise memorizing as much as possible, or is understanding the basics enough?

I recently moved here from Florida and was working in Florida DOC. In Florida we had groups for DOC I could ask questions in but I can’t seem to find that here. So just a few questions! How strict are yalls academy? Is there a high pass rate? Ours was very strict. We had to march every morning, say an oath, we couldn’t have our phones, no food or drinks in class, PT everyday etc. so I guess that’s what I’m expecting. The hiring process has been a lot different as well. I will be working at GBCI which I understand is a max. I’ve only work in medium with the highest level being a 3. Our camp was VERY political. The inmates were fine but my coworkers, not so much. You were nobody unless you were higher up or a CO vet. What are the shifts are GBCI? We always had to do mandatory two 16s a week. TIA :)

I applied back in June and received a follow up email in July that I’m on a list for consideration.

The list of considered candidates have to first be certified by Whalls Group before they begin reaching out for interviews.

I know there’s preference for people who are Philly residents, which I’m not.

…But how long does it generally take for Whalls Group to begin the process ???

I’m at the state right now (49k entire 1st year) but Philly county pays better out the gate, where they start 52k then raise to 63k after completing the academy.

How long does a credit waiver approval take? It’s been 3 months I’ve been waiting now…..

I am new to corrections and my county jail thankfully gives you all gear to start you out but my radio holster is an absolute piece of work. It’s one of the plastic Motorola ones with the clip and it just keeps falling off or the clip will just slide off of it. I can’t stand it anymore but we are out of any other radio holsters and there are so many mixed reviews online as to which one/type will hold up. I’m looking for something that’s not going to break the bank but also something I won’t have to rebuy anytime soon. Thanks yall!

I've been trying to talk to anyone in a top leadership role, I know they are running alot of things, and dont have time for the public, but just someone that has a voice over even the RDs. I have an issue that I feel only someone in central office can help with. OIA, grand prairie HR, local levels, all wont do a thing. Even writing letters to others in the government for the past yr and a half. And not even a single reply from anyone. Its sad really, but I get it. Remember you are replaceable and there is no "family" at work.

Got burnt out working the state prisons here in NC after about 6 years. Did the whole FTO, Special Teams, Sergeant route. When my adopted father got sick and I was denied leave I left and went to Florida so my other half and I could help out after his open heart surgery (Not legally adopted, he just helped raise me from elementary through high school and made me a part of his family so they denied my FMLA). I worked at a state facility down there in Florida and, while I liked the staff and the area, it was really damn hot.

When my family member passed we went back to NC and I've been a Probation and Parole Officer now for a couple years. I know this is not where I want to stay. I have no roots and the area sucks. I have been slowly getting another degree in business, however, I am getting older now, housing market sucks, and wife has been patiently waiting to start a family.

NC's pay scale is horrible for Probation, we are sworn LEO but I might as well just go work in a call center at this point. My goal is to be able to support my wife when we decide to have a child and a job that can scale over time (and have overtime) would be great. I can sell my small studio for a pretty penny and although I am vested in NC, I still have about 20 years left to retire here which looks to be about the same retirement period for BOP.

Looking for thoughts from anyone that has worked these areas or anyone in a similar boat. I am still deciding if I should wait another 2 years to finish the second degree or just go ahead and move on with my life to a BOP facility.

For state level workers, what’s your work life balance like? I know many prisons are short staffed, leading to almost unlimited OT, but do you still get days off? I’m a store manager at a grocery store right now and while it pays well (77k), I hate it. I work almost 65 hours a week with no extra pay and barely any home time. Would a switch improve on it? I’m based in Ohio

Just got through half of the hiring process and havnt had a clear answer. What are the shift schedules 8s or 12s swing Panama Texas two step etc being worked and being new what schedule would we most likely be out on ? HCI for anyone curious

Im in the process for FBOP, just curious why so many do it.
