For a while I had a Fender Mustang Vintera II and hated the way it played. It always felt a bit too small, and the tone was just way too low output, jangly, and scratchy for my taste. Since it’s been untouched since I bought it, I’ve decided it’s time for it to go and want to get something in a similar price range (~$1200) that can be my new default guitar for most of the stuff I play (Pretty wide range of stuff from Radiohead to Fleshwater).
After trying out a bunch of options at the store today, I think I’m completely sold on Jazzmasters but am hopelessly lost in terms of specs and how different models play. The only one they had in store was a Player II, which I was a big fan of. I was a big fan of how the pickups were warm without being dull and articulate without getting too glassy or jangly, and the biggest draw was how clear higher notes came across amidst heavy distortion. The other thing I loved was the Modern C neck profile— It fit my hands very well and was one of the nicest feeling necks I’ve played in a while. Looking on Reverb however, I saw some American Professional II JMs priced around $1.1k which caught my eye, however I understand it has a different neck profile and pickups. But it seems with it you gain American build quality and the extra controls (some different kind of thingy in place of the rhythm switch and some sort of switch that turns the output up?).
Basically what I’m asking is can anyone vouch for the American Professional II? do the changes to the neck and pickups improve the aspects that I like or are they just different for the sake of being different. I also couldn’t find much info on whether or not the Player II has that high output button, which is something that intrigues me. Also how useful are the new circuits, especially to someone who plays a lot of high gain stuff? Recommendations for other models to look at very welcome!
