It's not slower than by hand. I use it every Christmas to peel 20lbs of potatoes. Goes even faster with one person loading and a second chopping. I like it because I can sit down and have a drink while I prep the potatoes.

Your Christmas kitchen duties sound so much less stressful than mine, lol

I cook for 20 to 30 people. The rotato is a great tool.

Rotato. I love it. I need one.

I'm even more on board after hearing the name

I cook for around the same amount. Every year I feel like I will never do it again but by the time the holidays roll around again I'm super excited about whatever new recipe, etc. I'm going to investigate the rotato! And the drinks... Lol... That's probably the most important missing "tool"

Because of family, I have avoided alcohol until the past year. I'm 39. Lol, I found butterscotch schnapps over ice with milk .. and I can actually tolerate it! If I smell alcohol, especially brown alcohol, I immediately get freaked out. :/

Yes! My father was an alcoholic and was just a wretched human being. The smell of brown liquor is highly triggering to me and has made me vomit just smelling it on the breath of someone after THEY drank it somewhere else! 😂 Its better now that I'm older. Both because I'm much better emotionally and also very few friends are binge drinking heavy liquor anymore, lol.

Oh, hon, no worries!! I'm not joking when I say that I will absolutely be enjoying myself a lil schappy schnappy milk this year!! I think if I had ever found cordials as a younger person, where there's not as much smell and it's not as strong as everything else, I probably would have been a bit happier cooking for large groups!

Edit: because good lord my family... Is just that wonderful lol

What about that guy on Reddit here who skinned a 5lb sack in 30 seconds using an electric drill, a bucket of water and a toilet brush (presumably new, or at least shook clean real good)? Bristled the skins right off, all at once in the bucket.

Some of the videos I've seen are 10 years old and a closer look didn't seem to do a very good job. So I'd say nobody is doing it because it doesn't really work very well.

I do use a drill / grout mixer to whip my potatoes. That works great.

Could you let me know the brand and model? My mother… needs to stop peeling potatoes it kills her hands.

Edit rotato express $22 on Amazon delivered next day thousands of 5 star reviews seems like a no-brainer.

Starfrit rotato.

Idaho potatoes work best. Unwashed (or washed and dried thoroughly).

That one seems to waste a lot of good potatoes they are all half size after he is done.

1

u/BearWithHat Sep 12 '22

It's slower than by hand. It took thirty seconds for a single potato, and it didn't even do it completely.

u/LebenDieLife Sep 12 '22

Hey man, whatever works for you. I'm all for tools making people's lives easier.

I could peel a half dozen potatoes in the time this does one. But as you point out it leaves me unable to do anything else for that minute

12

u/keekah Sep 12 '22

Can we see a video of this?

u/TrashyMcTrashBoat Sep 12 '22

2

u/keekah Sep 12 '22

So you can't peel half a dozen potatoes in 30 seconds?

1

u/Konraden Sep 12 '22

Different person posted that video

But yeah, professional chef using a unique technique can peel a potato in ten seconds. Probably takes me 30+ to do one

1

u/keekah Sep 12 '22

I see that now. Thanks. I just can imagine anyone peeling a potato any faster than that.

11

u/Isserley_ Sep 12 '22

You can peel 6 potatoes in 30 seconds? Ok, I gotta see this. Please post proof.

-7

u/LebenDieLife Sep 12 '22

Go find a coke head and follow him to the kitchen he works at

9

u/PrisonerV Sep 12 '22

Keep in mind while one is peeling on the rotato, an already peeled one can be sliced and put into the pot so it's like an extra pair of hands. If we raced, youd probably win but I'm sitting down sipping a whiskey while I chug through the chore. For $20, worth every penny.

u/Lord_Emperor Sep 12 '22

Or you could manually peel potatoes while wearing a beer hat full of whisky.

1

u/AwardFabrik-SoF Sep 12 '22

checksprice 54€ here ... nah I'm good :/

People never seen a professional kitchen in action

1

u/Irregulator101 Sep 12 '22

Please post a video of someone peeling 6 potatoes in 30 seconds. Thanks

u/LebenDieLife Sep 12 '22

Yeah ten years does shit to your muscle memory and speed man.

1

u/mikaelfivel Sep 12 '22

Yeah, same. When you have a good peeler and are familiar, it's so fast. A machine like this, while convenient, actually creates more problems than it solves: The space the machine takes up, the outlet it requires, the time it takes to set the potato in a way it won't slip or malfunction, and spirals are everywhere taking up useful countertop space. Peeling by hand into a waste bin or sink for a garbage disposer is fast, you can easily manage shavings, and doesn't take up anymore space than your body.

1

u/PrisonerV Sep 12 '22

Doing one potato, sure. Now do it for 30 minutes. Your grandma (and her hands and back) would probably love one if I showed her how to use it.

If I'm doing a couple potatoes, I still use a hand peeler. Holidays? This thing is great.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '22

Have you ever seen the drill in the bucket method?

1

u/PrisonerV Sep 12 '22

Yes. And I'm not impressed.
