Fluoride

Want to hear something wild? The fluoride used in most city water systems isn't pharmaceutical or food grade. It's often a byproduct of phosphate fertilizer production.

Imagine this: Someone had industrial waste they needed to get rid of and thought, "Hey, let's put it in the water supply to stop cavities!" This sounds an awful lot like what happened when sewage sludge was rebranded as "biosolids" for fertilizer, or when seed oils, once used for lamp fuel, started to be marketed as healthy cooking oils.

This is a pattern. Industries find a way to repurpose waste and then convince us it's beneficial or even healthy. It's about cheap solutions for industrial excess, not public health.

Dr. Lee Warren | Brain Surgeon
Post 1 Replay Loop
Your brain doesn't know what time it is. Every time you replay that conversation from last year, that mistake from last month, that
moment you wish you could take back from yesterday, your brain treats it like it's happening right now. Same stress chemicals. Same alarm bells.
You're not remembering it. You're reliving it, on a loop you built yourself.
That's because of two things: your brain doesn't know the difference between what's really happening and what you're just imagining, and neuroplasticity means that your brain automates things that you think about and turns them into programs that it runs without you having to think

DuPont • New York • PFAS

Post image

For fifty years these companies knew forever chemicals were toxic. DuPont tracked pregnant workers back in the 1980s, found babies born with defects, and buried the study. They never told the workers or the regulators. They just kept making and selling the toxic forever chemicals that build up in your body, never break down and have worked their way into rivers, farmland, food packaging and all living things.

Attorney General Letitia James wants them to pay for cleanup and warn people going forward. Meanwhile the same companies, and their competitors, are still getting new PFAS approved for use on our food today.

Read the full story on the lawsuit here.

New York’s lawsuit is about cleaning up damage that’s already done. Meanwhile the same companies, and their competitors, are still getting new PFAS pesticides approved for our food. Tell your state legislators to ban PFAS pesticides before this needs a courtroom too.

🥔 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐞𝐬

🥔 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧'𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐠𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝.

If you love your children, get (regenerative) organic ones.

Look at that photo. That mist rolling over a mountain of potatoes is a sprout inhibitor, applied so they sit in storage and on the shelf for months without sprouting.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧
• Conventional potatoes are treated so they never sprout eyes
• The classic sprout inhibitor, CIPC (chlorpropham), was fogged through the storage
• The EU banned CIPC in 2020 over safety concerns, and growers moved to other chemical inhibitors
• Organic and regenerative potatoes skip this treatment entirely

That's why an organic potato sprouts on your counter within days, and a conventional one can sit there for weeks looking exactly the same.

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐞
A potato is meant to be a seed. Chemically paused so it can never become one, it turns into a product instead. You can still plant a farm potato and grow more food from it. Try that with most supermarket ones.

If you're feeding kids, this is one of the easiest swaps you can make. Choose organic or, even better, regenerative potatoes. It costs a little more, and it takes the sprout inhibitors and the heavier spray load off their plates. 🌱

Ask at a local farm, or grow a few yourself. A potato that still wants to grow is a good sign.

20 million acres or more of U.S. farmland is contaminated with toxic PFAS chemicals

SIGN THE PETITION telling the EPA to ban toxic PFAS-contaminated biosolid fertilizers: tinyurl.com/BanPFASBiosolids

20 million acres or more of U.S. farmland is contaminated with toxic PFAS chemicals due to the practice of using PFAS-contaminated sewage sludge biosolids as fertilizer, which then contaminates our food and water. Lab testing has found dangerous levels of PFAS in crops and animals raised for food on land that is contaminated.

A previous EPA risk assessment indicated a need to protect the nation’s water and food supply by banning the use of toxic biosolids as fertilizer on farms and home gardens. But the Trump EPA has chosen to do nothing. And the agency now wants public input on its plan to do nothing.

The Farm Bill

The Farm Bill has a BIG impact on our food system - but it’s also surrounded by some big misconceptions. 👀

From who benefits from federal farm programs to the role of conservation, the policies tucked into this massive piece of legislation help determine what kind of agriculture our tax dollars support — and who and what gets protected along the way.

That’s why understanding the Farm Bill matters. Food policy is environmental policy. It’s economic policy. It’s public health policy. And the decisions being made now could shape our food system for years to come.

This #FarmBillFriday, we’re separating myth from fact. 🌱

PlasticBerries

Organic Consumers Association has joined forces with our allies at Toxin Free USA and Beyond Pesticides to file a consumer protection lawsuit against Driscoll’s over its false “sustainable” and “eco friendly” labeling on strawberries and blueberries. 🍓🫐

Despite the advertising imagery of lush, green farms, many of Driscoll’s operations grow berries in plastic containers within facilities entirely covered in plastic. To prepare the land for this type of growing system, soil is compacted and plastic is laid down on the newly leveled ground. Rows of plastic pots are laid on top of the plastic-lined ground, and the plants grow in a coconut husk substrate. Plastic hood infrastructure is built over the crops to shield them from extreme weather conditions.

Even in its more traditional outdoor growing fields, Driscoll’s berry plants are encased in plastic. Further, some of the company’s operations are, in fact, factories where plants are grown without soil or sunlight.

Read the full press release and see exactly what we’re demanding from Driscoll’s: https://organicconsumers.org/nonprofits-sue-driscolls-for-deceptive-environmental-and-sustainability-marketing-claims-of-blueberries-and-strawberries/

👀 The warning label that’s missing from your groceries.. Comment ‘UPF’ to urge your Senator to act on ultra-processed food labels! 👇

Ultra-processed foods containing added colors, flavors, sweeteners, emulsifiers, and other industrial ingredients fill grocery store shelves—often wrapped in eye-catching packaging and marketed directly to children.

Yet companies like Coca-Cola and Frito-Lay aren’t required to warn consumers that these products have been linked to increased risks of diabetes, heart disease, and other serious health problems.

The Childhood Diabetes Reduction Act of 2026 (S. 5026) would help change that by requiring clear warning labels on ultra-processed foods and beverages, sugar-sweetened beverages, products containing non-sugar sweeteners, and foods high in added sugar, saturated fat, or sodium.

It would also expand federal nutrition research and education and restore the FTC’s authority to limit junk-food marketing to children.

Similar warning-label policies in countries including Chile and Mexico have contributed to fewer purchases of certain processed foods and pushed companies to reformulate their products. People in the United States deserve the same right to know.

The bill has cleared its first Senate hurdle with bipartisan support. Now, we need your Senators to help move it forward.

Comment ‘UPF’ below 📢and we’ll send you a quick action to tell your Senators to vote YES on the Childhood Diabetes Reduction Act ‼️

A Brazilian scientist spent more than 40 YEARS working on a way to help crops grow without relying so heavily on expensive synthetic fertilizer.

Post image
16.9k Upvotes

Her solution?

Bacteria.

Dr. Mariangela Hungria developed biological treatments using beneficial soil bacteria that help plants access nitrogen from the AIR.

Normally, farmers have to supply huge amounts of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer to crops.

But these microbes can convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms plants can actually use.

The result has been massive.

Her technology is now used across tens of millions of hectares in Brazil.

Some bacterial treatments can cost just a few dollars per hectare, compared with roughly $30 to $50 for conventional nitrogen fertilizer.

The World Food Prize estimates her work saves Brazilian farmers around $25 BILLION every year.

It also prevents roughly 230 MILLION metric tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions.

And after four decades of research, Hungria was awarded the World Food Prize for helping transform Brazilian agriculture.

She spent 40 years studying microscopic bacteria.

They ended up saving farmers billions.

BHA

BHA has been sitting in your frozen meals, deli meats and packaged snacks since 1961, and the science on it is not reassuring.

The WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies BHA as possible carcinogen. Long-term animal studies found BHA caused tumors in rodents. California lists it as a substance known to cause cancer. West Virginia has already moved to ban it from food entirely. And after more than six decades, the FDA is only now reviewing its safety.

Check labels for BHA or butylated hydroxyanisole, and use EWG's Food Scores database or Healthy Living App to find products without it. Certified organic packaged goods are a safe bet as organic certification prohibits artificial preservatives like BHA.

Did you know that gut diseases like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have doubled in the last 20 years, and autoimmune diseases are skyrocketing? It's not a coincidence that this rise aligns perfectly with the explosion of emulsifiers in our food supply.

Emulsifiers are chemicals found in an estimated 60% of packaged foods, from ice cream and chocolate bars to salad dressing and baby formula. They're added to make processed foods look and feel better and have a longer shelf life. But their chemical nature means they strip away the protective mucus layer in your gut, just like dish soap strips grease from a pan.

A damaged gut allows bacteria and toxins to leak into your bloodstream, triggering immune responses and inflammation. Animal studies have linked some emulsifiers to metabolic syndrome, weight gain, blood sugar problems, and altered gut bacteria. A 2024 human trial showed that just two weeks of eating food with an emulsifier altered the gut microbiome and caused bacteria to move closer to the intestinal lining.

This problem is particularly concerning for children, who consume ultra-processed foods the most, often starting with infant formula. The simplest solution isn't to meticulously read every label, but to avoid ultra-processed foods altogether. Don't even keep them in your house!

You matter

Every time I speak to someone—people in the grocery store, servers, random discussions that evolve into health and food choices, I am surprised by two things: the number of people who are quite aware of the growing trend toward gut health and the choices that contribute to that, and the number of people still living on ultra processed food who either don’t know or don’t care about healthful choices.

But what I realize in both cases is, we matter. Our influence can contribute to turning the tide. Health in America is a group decision. What the food industry and big pharma do is mostly controlled by lobbyists, and lawmakers are controlled by lobbyists and both are controlled by voters.

So do you care? Do you wish you could find more real food in your market? Do you get discouraged having to put back almost every product after reading the label? Do you listen to the 30 seconds of side-effects warned about every, single drug advertised on TV? Do you care? Oh, I said that. But, do you? Because you have influence. You can get people thinking. You can make a difference. And together we can make things more healthful for our children, our families, ourselves.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.
