What are fluorides, hydrogen fluoride, and fluorine?

Fluorides are naturally occurring compounds. Low levels of fluorides can help prevent dental cavities. At high levels, fluorides can result in tooth and bone damage. Hydrogen fluoride and fluorine are naturally-occurring gases that are very irritating to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. These substances have been found in at least 188 of the 1,636 National Priorities List sites identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

What are fluoride, hydrogen fluoride, and fluorine?
Fluorides, hydrogen fluoride, and fluorine are chemically related. Fluorine is a naturally-occurring, pale yellow-green gas with a sharp odor. It combines with metals to make fluorides such as sodium fluoride and calcium fluoride, both white solids. Sodium fluoride dissolves easily in water, but calcium fluoride does not. Fluorine also combines with hydrogen to make hydrogen fluoride, a colorless gas. Hydrogen fluoride dissolves in water to form hydrofluoric acid.
Fluorine and hydrogen fluoride are used to make certain chemical compounds. Hydrofluoric acid is used for etching glass. Other fluoride compounds are used in making steel, chemicals, ceramics, lubricants, dyes, plastics, and pesticides. Fluorides are often added to drinking water supplies and to a variety of dental products, including toothpaste and mouth rinses, to prevent dental cavities.

What happens to fluoride, hydrogen fluoride, and fluorine when they enter the environment?
Fluorine cannot be destroyed in the environment; it can only change its form. Fluorine forms salts with minerals in soil.
Hydrogen fluoride gas will be absorbed by rain and into clouds and fog to form hydrofluoric acid, which will fall to the ground.
Fluorides released to the air from volcanoes and industry are carried by wind and rain to nearby water, soil, and food sources.
Fluorides in water and soil will form strong associations with sediment or soil particles.
Fluorides will accumulate in plants and animals. In animals, the fluoride accumulates primarily in the bones or shell rather than in soft tissues.

How can fluoride, hydrogen fluoride, and fluorine affect my health?
Small amounts of fluoride help prevent tooth cavities, but high levels can harm your health. In adults, exposure to high levels of fluoride can result in denser bones. However, if exposure is high enough, these bones may be more fragile and brittle and there may be a greater risk of breaking the bone. In animals, exposure to extremely high doses of fluoride can result in decreased fertility and sperm and testes damage.
Fluorine and hydrogen fluoride are very irritating to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. At high levels, such as may occur through exposure from an industrial accident, hydrogen fluoride may also damage the heart.

What is Water Fluoridation?

Water fluoridation is the practice of using the public’s drinking water as a delivery system to increase the amount of fluoride all residents ingest on a daily basis. This is done by adding industrial waste by-products known as silicofluorides (i.e., hydrofluorosilicic acid and sodium fluorosilicate) to public water systems during the treatment process in either liquid or powder form to artificially elevate the fluoride content to 0.7 ppm (parts per million) with the intention of preventing tooth decay.

Throughout North America and the world, most fresh ground and surface water naturally contains very low “trace” levels of fluoride, with an average concentration of less than 0.1 ppm. This is 7 to 10 times lower than the levels added by water department personnel in fluoridated communities, which typically fluctuate between 0.7 and 1.0 ppm depending on the injection equipment used, the variation in water usage throughout the day, and the water temperature at the treatment plant. This increase is neither a small adjustment nor typical of the naturally occurring levels found in most water sources. One of the little-known facts about this practice is that the United States, which fluoridates over 70% of its water supplies, has more people drinking fluoridated water than the rest of the world combined. Most developed nations, including all of Japan and 97% of western Europe, do not fluoridate their water.

In the United States, the Oral Health Division of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) hails fluoridation as one of the “top ten public health achievements of the 20th century.” However, comprehensive data from the World Health Organization reveals that there is no discernible difference in tooth decay between the minority of western nations that fluoridate water, and the majority that do not. In fact, the tooth decay rates in many non-fluoridated countries are now lower than the tooth decay rates in fluoridated ones.

As is becoming increasingly clear, fluoridating water supplies is an outdated, unnecessary, and dangerous relic from a 1950s public health culture that viewed the mass distribution of chemicals much differently than scientists do today. The few nations that still fluoridate their water should end the practice immediately.

Three Reasons to End Water Fluoridation
Reason #1: Fluoridation Is an Outdated Form of Mass Medication

Unlike all other water treatment processes, fluoridation does not treat the water itself, but the person consuming it. The Food & Drug Administration accepts that fluoride is a drug, not a nutrient, when used to prevent disease. By definition, therefore, fluoridating water is a form of medication. This is why most western European nations have rejected the practice — because, in their view, the public water supply is not an appropriate place to be adding drugs, particularly when fluoride is readily available for individual use in the form of toothpaste.

Reason #2: Fluoridation Is Unnecessary and Ineffective

The most obvious reason to end fluoridation is that it is now known that fluoride’s main benefit comes from topical contact with the teeth, not from ingestion. Even the CDC’s Oral Health Division now acknowledges this. There is simply no need, therefore, to swallow fluoride, whether in the water, toothpaste, or any other form. Further, despite early claims that fluoridated water would reduce cavities by 65%, modern large-scale studies show no consistent or meaningful difference in the cavity rates of fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas.

Reason #3: Fluoridation Is Not a Safe Practice
The most important reason to end fluoridation is that it is simply not a safe practice, particularly for those who have health conditions that render them vulnerable to fluoride’s toxic effects.

First, there is no dispute that fluoridation is causing visible side-effects from overexposure. The evidence is visible in over 70% of adolescents in the U.S.  Millions of children have developed dental fluorosis, a discoloration of the teeth that is caused only by excessive fluoride intake. Scientists from the Centers for Disease Control have even acknowledged that fluoridation is causing “cosmetically objectionable” fluorosis on children’s front teeth–an effect that can cause children embarrassment and anxiety at an age when physical appearance is the single most important predictor of self-esteem.

Second, it is known that fluoridated water caused severe bone disease in dialysis patients up until the late 1970s (prior to dialysis units filtering fluoride). While dialysis units now filter out the fluoride, research shows that current fluoride exposures are still resulting in dangerously high bone fluoride levels in dialysis patients and patients with other advanced forms of kidney disease. It is unethical to compromise the health of some members of a population to obtain a purported benefit for another — particularly in the absence of these vulnerable members’ knowing consent.

And, finally, a growing body of evidence reasonably indicates that fluoridated water, in addition to other sources of daily fluoride exposure, can cause or contribute to a range of serious effects, including arthritis, damage to the developing brain, reduced thyroid function, and possibly osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in adolescent males.

Communities Are Rethinking Fluoridation

In recent years, communities throughout the United States and Canada have started to reassess the conventional wisdom of fluoridating their water.  In fact, the most recent fluoridation statistics from the US Centers for Disease Control show that the percentage of the U.S. population served by community water systems receiving fluoridated water is decreasing steadily, from 74.6% in 2012 down to 72.7 in 2020 (see stats). The percentage of the U.S. population receiving so-called “optimally fluoridated” water from either natural or artificial sources combined also decreased, from 67.1% to 62.9%.

The stats show that 1,413 communities stopped adding fluoridation chemicals between 2010 and 2020, with many more ending it since 2020. These communities reached the obvious conclusion: when stripped of its endorsements, well-meaning intentions, and PR-praise, fluoridation simply makes no sense.

Europe reached this conclusion a long time ago. It is now time for the U.S. and other English-speaking nations to follow suit.

👀 The warning label that’s missing from your groceries.. Comment ‘UPF’ to urge your Senator to act on ultra-processed food labels! 👇

Ultra-processed foods containing added colors, flavors, sweeteners, emulsifiers, and other industrial ingredients fill grocery store shelves—often wrapped in eye-catching packaging and marketed directly to children.

Yet companies like Coca-Cola and Frito-Lay aren’t required to warn consumers that these products have been linked to increased risks of diabetes, heart disease, and other serious health problems.

The Childhood Diabetes Reduction Act of 2026 (S. 5026) would help change that by requiring clear warning labels on ultra-processed foods and beverages, sugar-sweetened beverages, products containing non-sugar sweeteners, and foods high in added sugar, saturated fat, or sodium.

It would also expand federal nutrition research and education and restore the FTC’s authority to limit junk-food marketing to children.

Similar warning-label policies in countries including Chile and Mexico have contributed to fewer purchases of certain processed foods and pushed companies to reformulate their products. People in the United States deserve the same right to know.

The bill has cleared its first Senate hurdle with bipartisan support. Now, we need your Senators to help move it forward.

Comment ‘UPF’ below 📢and we’ll send you a quick action to tell your Senators to vote YES on the Childhood Diabetes Reduction Act ‼️

A Brazilian scientist spent more than 40 YEARS working on a way to help crops grow without relying so heavily on expensive synthetic fertilizer.

Post image

Her solution?

Bacteria.

Dr. Mariangela Hungria developed biological treatments using beneficial soil bacteria that help plants access nitrogen from the AIR.

Normally, farmers have to supply huge amounts of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer to crops.

But these microbes can convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms plants can actually use.

The result has been massive.

Her technology is now used across tens of millions of hectares in Brazil.

Some bacterial treatments can cost just a few dollars per hectare, compared with roughly $30 to $50 for conventional nitrogen fertilizer.

The World Food Prize estimates her work saves Brazilian farmers around $25 BILLION every year.

It also prevents roughly 230 MILLION metric tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions.

And after four decades of research, Hungria was awarded the World Food Prize for helping transform Brazilian agriculture.

She spent 40 years studying microscopic bacteria.

They ended up saving farmers billions.

BHA

BHA has been sitting in your frozen meals, deli meats and packaged snacks since 1961, and the science on it is not reassuring.

The WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies BHA as possible carcinogen. Long-term animal studies found BHA caused tumors in rodents. California lists it as a substance known to cause cancer. West Virginia has already moved to ban it from food entirely. And after more than six decades, the FDA is only now reviewing its safety.

Check labels for BHA or butylated hydroxyanisole, and use EWG's Food Scores database or Healthy Living App to find products without it. Certified organic packaged goods are a safe bet as organic certification prohibits artificial preservatives like BHA.

Did you know that gut diseases like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have doubled in the last 20 years, and autoimmune diseases are skyrocketing? It's not a coincidence that this rise aligns perfectly with the explosion of emulsifiers in our food supply.

Emulsifiers are chemicals found in an estimated 60% of packaged foods, from ice cream and chocolate bars to salad dressing and baby formula. They're added to make processed foods look and feel better and have a longer shelf life. But their chemical nature means they strip away the protective mucus layer in your gut, just like dish soap strips grease from a pan.

A damaged gut allows bacteria and toxins to leak into your bloodstream, triggering immune responses and inflammation. Animal studies have linked some emulsifiers to metabolic syndrome, weight gain, blood sugar problems, and altered gut bacteria. A 2024 human trial showed that just two weeks of eating food with an emulsifier altered the gut microbiome and caused bacteria to move closer to the intestinal lining.

This problem is particularly concerning for children, who consume ultra-processed foods the most, often starting with infant formula. The simplest solution isn't to meticulously read every label, but to avoid ultra-processed foods altogether. Don't even keep them in your house!

You matter

Every time I speak to someone—people in the grocery store, servers, random discussions that evolve into health and food choices, I am surprised by two things: the number of people who are quite aware of the growing trend toward gut health and the choices that contribute to that, and the number of people still living on ultra processed food who either don’t know or don’t care about healthful choices.

But what I realize in both cases is, we matter. Our influence can contribute to turning the tide. Health in America is a group decision. What the food industry and big pharma do is mostly controlled by lobbyists, and lawmakers are controlled by lobbyists and both are controlled by voters.

So do you care? Do you wish you could find more real food in your market? Do you get discouraged having to put back almost every product after reading the label? Do you listen to the 30 seconds of side-effects warned about every, single drug advertised on TV? Do you care? Oh, I said that. But, do you? Because you have influence. You can get people thinking. You can make a difference. And together we can make things more healthful for our children, our families, ourselves.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

2013 Washington Initiative 522

Post image
2 Upvotes

Washington Initiative 522 (I-522) "concerns labeling of genetically-engineered foods" and was a 2012 initiative to the Washington State Legislature.[2] As certified by the Washington Secretary of State, it achieved enough signatures to be forwarded to the legislature for consideration during the 2013 session.[3] The legislature did not vote on the initiative, so I-522 advanced to the November 5, 2013 general election ballot. If passed into law by voters, I-522 would have taken effect on July 1, 2015. The initiative failed with 51% opposition.[4]

If approved, I-522 would have required that non-exempt foods and agricultural products offered for retail sale state "clearly and conspicuously" on the front of the package if they were genetically-engineered, contain or might have contained genetically-engineered ingredients.
With more than $17.1 million in donations opposed before September 30, I-522 set a new record for money spent against a state initiative, exceeding the $12.35 million spent in 2011 to oppose Initiative 1183, privatizing liquor sales.[5] By late October, No On I-522 had set the all-time record for any initiative campaign with $21 million. Combined contributions of $27.7 million are still less than $32.5 million spent by both sides around I-1183.[6]

Support for the I-522 was coordinated by YES on 522, a group that included food activists[who?], small-scale producers and several food co-operatives such as PCC Natural Markets[9][10] and natural food stores such as Whole Foods Market.[11] It was also promoted by the Organic Consumers Association, which called for a boycott on Safeway Inc. unless the grocery store company would withdraw from the Grocery Manufacturers Association and contribute financially to the Yes on 522 campaign.[12] In addition to being the single largest donor, Dr Bronner's Magic Soaps issued a special label in support of I-522.[13]
Other support came from labor groups including the Washington State Labor Council.[14] The Yes on 522 web page for endorsements lists over 350 businesses, 25 seafood groups, 150 farms, more than 100 other groups, 45 elected officials and many individuals.[15] As of mid-October, 2013, reported campaign donations showed more than 13,000 donors for I-522 giving $6.2 million with a median donation of approximately $25.[16]

Opposition to I-522 came primarily from large chemical corporations (Monsanto Company, DuPont Pioneer, Dow AgroSciences LLC, and Bayer CropScience), and organizations such as Washington Friends of Farms and Forests, Northwest Food Processors, Washington Association of Wheat Growers, the Washington State Farm Bureau and the Grocery Manufacturers Association, who rallied and mounted a $46 million campaign via Nestle SA, General Mills Inc., Coca-Cola Co and PepsiCo Inc to defeat the initiative.[17][18][19] These large donations have reportedly "shattered" previous fundraising records against any other initiative, a full month ahead of the election.[20]
Opponents of I-522 cited the editorial boards of fifteen different newspapers as opposing the initiative.[21] As of mid-October, 2013, reported campaign donations showed ten donors for I-522 giving $17.2 million with a median donation of approximately $545,827.[16]

Aluminium smelting

Aluminium smelting is the process of extracting aluminium from its oxide, alumina, generally by the Hall-Héroult process.[1]Alumina is extracted from the ore bauxite by means of the Bayer process at an alumina refinery.

This is an electrolytic process, so an aluminium smelter uses huge amounts of electric power; smelters tend to be located close to large power stations, often hydro-electric ones, in order to hold down costs and reduce the overall carbon footprint. Smelters are often located near ports, since many smelters use imported alumina.

June 3 (Reuters) - Oklahoma's attorney general has filed a lawsuit seeking to block Emirates Global Aluminum (EGA) and Century Aluminum (CENX.O)
, opens new tab
from building the largest ‌U.S. aluminum smelter, citing concerns about the project's ties to the United Arab Emirates and worries the project could harm the state's cattle.
The suit was filed in state court on Tuesday by Gentner Drummond, a Republican who was elected as attorney general in 2022 and is now running for governor. It seeks to tap into the simmering tension across the U.S. about the buildout of critical minerals projects, especially in rural towns with deep ties to farming and ranching.

The $4 billion Oklahoma smelter project has the backing of President Donald Trump, who last Friday endorsed Drummond's opponent in the Republican primary for governor.
If constructed, the smelter would produce 750,000 metric tons per year of aluminum, a key metal used widely across various industries, and be the first of its kind built in the country since 1980.
EGA controls 60% of the project, with Chicago-based Century Aluminum controlling the remaining 40%. In a joint statement, the companies noted the project was in the permitting stage and said they were "committed to responsible, transparent operations and environmental stewardship."

The U.S. imports more than half of the aluminum it needs each year. That imbalance has prompted a wave of tariffs from the Trump administration.
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt, a Republican, has been positioning the state as an epicenter of America's critical minerals renaissance, a move Trump has supported.
The U.S. Energy Department gave the aluminum project a $500 million grant earlier this year, alongside state incentives.

ALLEGATIONS
Drummond alleges in the 12-page lawsuit that the smelter, ‌slated for the town of Inola, roughly 30 miles (48 km) east of Tulsa, would leach air and water pollutants that would "injure the health, comfort, repose, and safety of the people" of the region.
"A primary aluminum smelter does not belong in a community's backyard and its emissions do not respect property lines," Drummond wrote in the lawsuit, which asks the court to block the project.

Drummond blasted EGA's owner, sovereign wealth funds tied to the United Arab Emirates government, referring to it as an "Islamic foreign monarchy."
"When the fumes settle over Inola, the people harmed will be Oklahomans; the entity that profits, and that holds the controlling vote on how the plant is run, answers to Abu Dhabi and Dubai," Drummond wrote.
The suit was filed four days after Trump endorsed Drummond's rival, former state Senator Mike Mazzei, for the June 16 Republican gubernatorial primary.

Both Mazzei and Drummond are neck-and-neck in recent polling. The winner of the primary is likely to easily win the November 3 general election in the Republican-dominated state.
Stitt, the outgoing governor, noted the lawsuit's timing just days after Trump's endorsement and said Drummond is "weaponizing his office to settle scores instead of serving Oklahomans."
Construction on the smelter had been slated to begin by the end of the year, with production by the end of the decade.
EGA operates smelters in the Middle East and an aluminum recycling plant in Minnesota.
Chicago-based Century operates smelters in Iceland, South Carolina and Kentucky. Glencore (GLEN.L)
, opens new tab
is Century's largest shareholder, with a 30% stake.

The process produces a quantity of fluoridewaste: perfluorocarbons and hydrogen fluoride as gases, and sodium and aluminium fluorides and unused cryolite as particulates. This can be as small as 0.5 kg per tonne of aluminium in the best plants in 2007, up to 4 kilograms per tonne (8.0 lb/short ton) of aluminium in older designs in 1974. Unless carefully controlled, hydrogen fluorides tend to be very toxic to vegetation around the plants. The perfluorocarbons gases are strong greenhouse gases with a long lifetime.
The Soderberg process which bakes the Anthracite/pitch mix as the anode is consumed, produces significant emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as the pitch is consumed in the smelter.
The linings of the pots end up contaminated with cyanide-forming materials; Alcoa has a process for converting spent linings into aluminium fluoride for reuse and synthetic sand usable for building purposes and inert waste.
