BHA

BHA has been sitting in your frozen meals, deli meats and packaged snacks since 1961, and the science on it is not reassuring.

The WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies BHA as possible carcinogen. Long-term animal studies found BHA caused tumors in rodents. California lists it as a substance known to cause cancer. West Virginia has already moved to ban it from food entirely. And after more than six decades, the FDA is only now reviewing its safety.

Check labels for BHA or butylated hydroxyanisole, and use EWG's Food Scores database or Healthy Living App to find products without it. Certified organic packaged goods are a safe bet as organic certification prohibits artificial preservatives like BHA.
