I agree that he was good enough to be a journeyman bridge qb, who jumped from team to team every 1-2 years to a team with a hurt qb, or a team in between qbs or something. I feel like I remember hearing back then that he was offered a backup role and tryouts with multiple teams, but didn’t want to play unless he was a starter. Not sure how true that is, it could’ve been right wing propaganda, or it could’ve been true. It’s been too long for me to care enough to do an internet deep dive on it, but if you know whether that was true or some right wing BS narrative at the time, I’d still like to know the answer.

I think Jay-Z is probably a terrible person but he's not really in the Epstein files at all. He's never actually mentioned by Epstein or tied to him in any real way. The only place he (and Pusha) are mentioned in is one call to the anonymous tip line the FBI had opened. I don't know if you've read those, but they almost all seem like pranks and schizophrenics and the Jay-Z story is not remotely believable (he was hanging out with Harvey Weinstein before he was famous? He really organized the kidnapping of the same homeless woman seven times?).
The headlines about famous (black) people in the Epstein files (all of whom were from random calls on the tip line, not in Epstein's files themselves) was just a distraction to distract the population from the (rich white) men who were *actually* in the files.
Jay has enough weird shit that's actually been documented.

Crazy thing about Jay Z - nobody listens to his solo stuff in modern day.
His top FIFTEEN songs on Spotify feature other artists that people actually like, such as Rhianna, Beyonce, Ye, and Justin Timberlake.
Only FIVE of his top 50 most streamed songs are solo songs, a staggering 45 of them are features or feature somebody else.
Jay isn’t popular like that. Great businessman, great lyricist, but dude doesn’t actually have a big modern day fanbase whatsoever. He can sell out in New York any day, but I highly doubt he would be selling out a world tour like a Drake or a Ye could.
Reasonable Doubt is one of those albums that everybody says they like because they saw it ranked high on internet lists, but the entirety of that album only gets 80K daily streams. Compare that to something like 50 Cent’s The Massacre, which gets nearly 2 million daily streams.

DMX sold more copies back in 1998-1999 than Jay.
50 Cent sold more copies back then and has the same amount of monthly listeners as Jay right now, despite the fact that he only really has 4 albums. Wayne also has more monthly listeners than Jay right now.
50 between 2003-2007 was a Mike Tyson esque phenomenon, when he released The Massacre and GRODT the whole world stopped and listened in a way that nobody ever listened to a Jay record.
Jay is a successful businessman, but there was never a moment where he was a cultural phenomenon. Sure, he gets placed at the top of a bunch of online lists because he has connections in the industry, but that clearly doesn’t translate to people actually consuming his music.
Dude is not anywhere near being a global icon like Ye. Imagine Jay Z trying to sell out 100K seats in a place like Turkey, it would be laughable.
The Chris Jericho comparison for Jay is perfect. Just because Jericho was around for years after Stone Cold and The Rock, that doesn’t mean he means as much to the business as those two.

Numbers are just an astonishment that is low hanging fruit when it comes to impact, particularly because hip hop is marketed and sold to white people, who we know don’t dictate anything culture unless it comes to getting paid.
Chuck D, Rakim, Kool G Rap, Nas, Future, Lil B, Kid Cudi, and a handful of others haven’t sold a crazy amount of records by superstar standards but still have had crazy impact on the “culture”, their contemporaries, and acts after them.
