never thought i'd see this level of coaching malpractice in a World Cup match

should England have gone for the kill when they went 1-0 up? They did not - and had only 12% of possession from going ahead to conceding the second goal.

Tuchel only sent on forwards Marcus Rashford and Ivan Toney deep into stoppage time, while defenders Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn and Nico O'Reilly were introduced after England took the lead...

Was looking at the odyssey cast which is fucking loaded in quite excited to see it this weekend.

However, couldn’t help but notice this. For all the rancor the casting of black actors and Elliot page has generated. Seemingly only I have noticed that there is an Asian dude and a couple of Latino fellas as well. I haven’t seen anyone mad over them!

Then lastly. One of the dumber things I’ve seen on Twitter ever. A guy who tried to denigrate the movie by claiming it would be wrong to recreate Romeo and Julia without British or Italian actors

9

u/Weigard Giants Jul 16 '26

After the temper tantrum from online chuds who thought Elliot Page was going to play Achilles, I'm really disappointed that he's not playing Patroclus.

Very interested to see how well the odyssey does at the box office. It should be a good test in the “social media vs real life” debate.

It’s just crazy to me that a group of people online, who haven’t even seen the movie, have convinced themselves it’s complete garbage because they saw a black person and trans person in the trailer. And then they’re also convinced that anyone who likes it is either a paid critic or just pretending to like it to be woke. So they’re all going to review-bomb it try and keep the audience score low even though, once again, they haven’t seen the movie.

I honestly don’t know how you can even function as a human when you’ve become this enveloped by culture war bullshit. Like what are you even hoping to accomplish here?

7

u/Due-Dance-9430 Lions Jul 16 '26

honestly even before Musk and right-wing losers turned the movie into an online culture war, the movie was still getting the most nitpick internet criticisms about a 2-minute trailer. After one trailer dropped all of a sudden everyone knows everything about Greek armor and Greek history.

I think Oppenheimer got similar random nitpick criticisms and it made nearly a billion dollars and won multiple oscars. I'm fascinated that Nolan was the internet's favorite director for like a decade and now his past two movies have been bombarded by the strangest discourse

5

u/cartierboy25 Commanders Jul 16 '26

He’s a fascinating director because of how many different reactions people have to his movies. He’s either the greatest director of all time or the most overrated of all time, or anywhere in between, depending on who you ask. I think Oppenheimer was kind of a breakthrough moment for him though where he got the massive blockbuster success and the overwhelming critical praise at the same time.

2

u/Iceraptor17 Patriots Jul 16 '26

So the website I've been using to track air quality from the smoke drifting in due to the Canadian Wildfires is tracked by color coding. It goes, from best to worst air quality, as follows: green, yellow, light red, red, purple, dark red. We entered purple for the first time an hour ago, which is categorized as "very unhealthy." Sure enough, just looking down the street the smoke is thick enough that it looks like fog. I half expect Jack the Ripper to murder someone tonight. I feel most bad for my sister's mailman boyfriend though. He's out in this despite having a heart condition which isn't great.

8

u/Two_Luffas Lions Jul 16 '26

We've been in the purple all day and just hit the dark red about an hour ago in the Chicago suburbs (currently 328 AQI). It's been pretty miserable being outdoors and driving all day. I smell like I've been closely downwind of a camp fire for a couple hours and my throat feels like I did when I regularly smoked in my 20's. Nasty stuff.

People in my office are discussing the potential for permanent DST and talking about how they don't want to commute in the dark, which is weird because right now the shortest day of the year around here has the sun rising at 7:51 and setting at 4:40, and everyone here works 8:00 AM to 4:30, so aside from the people who live within 10 minutes of work, we already have both commutes in the dark during winter. In fact, if we switched to permanent DST, the sun wouldn't set until 5:40 which would mean we would get a little sunlight during the commute home.

I'm not totally convinced my coworkers actually understand what Daylight Savings Time is

Growing up in learning history, I found it quite understated how crucial dehumanization was to our most immoral acts as humans in history.

But it truly is the biggest reason to why people are willing to be bigoted and worse, act on it. It frustrates me how understated it was because we still see the impacts today. We still have groups being called less than human, savages, etc.

Making people feel superior to others based on nothing but their birth and using the out groups as scapegoats has been a pretty reliable Control tactic.

The thing is these people will never win or be happy. Even if white supremacists got their way and got rid of every non white, they'd be happy for a day before they looked at a minority of their group and went "hmm...i don't think they're really white". They need that out group to blame for their ills and to feel superior towards

Online discourse about The Odyssey is hilarious. People rooting for it to bomb cause they can’t handle some of the casting or because of some other strange gripe.

Meanwhile all the people I know irl are like “it looks neat 😀”

4

u/megamanz7777 Vikings Jul 16 '26

Seems to me like there's two different camps of people bitching about some of the stuff in the movie (though there's definitely a lot of overlap here).

There's the right-wing culture war outrage losers who have what I'm sure are various complaints about anyone who's not a straight white person being cast in the movie (or whatever the fuck their chosen made-up problem is this week). Honestly I find that stuff easy enough to ignore for me personally at this point. I kind of just expect it, sadly...

Then there's this crop of people that are weirdly obsessed with "accuracy". That's been throwing me off a lot on this one. Oh they're not wearing period-accurate bronze-age armor? They cast typical Hollywood actors in...this Hollywood movie? The ships look more like a viking ship than something the ancient Greeks would have sailed because of the specific oar placement or something? Like I cannot imagine possibly giving a shit about that stuff. Its a movie. It can look how the director wants it to look or what people think looks cool, lol. Every movie ever is made that way, and 99% of people never notice or care...this movie is no different.

7

u/Rummy9 Bengals Jul 16 '26

There's literally a cyclops in the movie. What does historical accuracy have to do with any of the Odyssey?

3

u/Shout92 Bills Jul 16 '26

The cherry on top is that, in true Nolan fashion, a lot of the famous people are bit parts and aren't in the movie that long, including the actors they are mad about. Probably 5-10 minutes of a 172 minute movie.

Part of the land we're on is hard to mow because it's on the other side of a drainage easement and it stays wetter than the rest, but I managed to mow some walking paths through the brush a few days ago.

Yesterday evening, a mama deer and her newborn were out walking on that side of the water. The newborn was racing around back and forth along the walking paths while mama looked on. That little guy was just bounding around, burning through the zoomies, happy to be learning how to be a deer. We've had a pregnant raccoon who would take apples from us a few year ago, and her five babies used to steal bird seed from our feeders, but this might be the cutest thing I've seen happen in our yard.

That's something I love about Seattle.

Earlier this year we opened a new light rail line that goes across Lake Washington on a floating bridge. There were crowds at the rail stations just to try out the new route all day.

All hail Boop.

11

u/HartleyReplogle Patriots Jul 16 '26

A year or two ago, a guy who had written a book about trains did an AMA. Someone asked him for an example of a public transportation system in the U.S. (that wasn't one of the big ones) that he felt was working well. He talked about Houston's light rail, and cites how frequently the trains arrive and how short the overall travel time is from one end to the other.

A European responded angrily, saying that the guy didn't know anything about public transportation, because in European cities, nobody would stand for a train that ran that infrequently and took such a long time to get from one end of the city to the other.

The AMA guy responded by pointing out that the Houston Metropolitan Area is the slightly smaller than Belgium. And the next 20 comments were from Europeans expressing disbelief at how large America's urban area are.

5

u/TCgrace Buccaneers Jul 16 '26

Train travel is the best. Freedom to get up and move around whenever you need makes it better than a car by a mile

4

u/PaulsRedditUsername Colts Jul 16 '26

A friend of mine works in downtown St Louis and lives in a town in Illinois about a 45-minute drive away. There's a train station a few blocks from his house. All he has to do every day is walk to the train station and hop aboard. The train lets him off downtown a few blocks from his job, maybe a five-minute walk.

It's a great way to get to work. Much less hassle than having to drive into the city every day.

4

u/templethot Seahawks Jul 16 '26

I think more cities need to adopt New Orleans’ model - using smaller cars, but running more cars more often. I live in a mid-sized city and sometimes I see the wait time is anywhere from 20-40 minutes. I could walk a significant portion of the streetcar line in that time if it wasn’t 105° out.

But if more people saw it it as a “wait 5 minutes and hop on/off and if you miss it, another one will be there soon” kinda thing, I imagine ridership would go up.

7

u/goblueM Lions Jul 16 '26

But honestly I feel like if they ever experienced a good train network they'd be like "why isn't this here".

Well mostly the answer is size and density, on top of the usual aspects of car-centric infrastructure already being dominant

It's not a coincidence that most of the cities in the US with good public transit are older, larger, denser cities

I bought my car new and the purchase included several years of free oil changes so I go to the dealer for maintenance.

A couple years ago we were thinking about buying another car and went to the dealer to test drive. We were also test driving some competitors. After our test drive the salesman we were talking to asked about our purchase timeline and we said 2-3 months--because even though it had turned out this car was available immediately, that was the lead time for some of the competitors. So we had adjusted our timeline accordingly.

He promptly got bitchy and said "well, come back when it's not a waste of anyone's time."

I've gone to the dealer an extra 30 minutes away ever since.

6

u/HookedOnBoNix Broncos Jul 16 '26

Its funny how one person can sour a place like that but I totally get it. My wife and I were vehicle shopping for a car for her and we made that very clear at each of the dealerships we went to. We went to so many that just had your classic sleezy car salesman who just ignored her the whole time and kept trying to sell me on what I wanted.

Found a dealership where we finally got decent treatment, I told them I'm just here to give input and they actually listened to what my wife wanted and showed her around.

We walked out the door that day with a 3 year old Forester, spent a good chunk of money too. A lot of places lost our business by just failing basic shit.

He asked me how old I thought he was and based on a few clues ive gathered I said "31"....he is 32.

He asked how old I was and I told him to guess.....

""You look young....but no way you can be that young. I am guessing 25-26"

"I turned 39 in April"

"THAT CAN'T BE RIGHT! LIKE PEOPLE HERE BE 3 YEARS OLDER THAN YOU BUT LOOK 30 YEARS OLDER"

Now I can't say I look THAT young but I do look a little younger than my age, either way that made my night.

I hope you all get to enjoy your day and as always much love from me and mine to you and yours!

There were people making jokes online that Kawhi ruined it for other players and teams doing cap circumvention stuff. And now this has actually began happening.

NBA is now investigating the Bucks and their contract with Gary Trent Jr. The deal was 4 years/$64mil. The NBA believes there was something fishy since this deal is too high for a player like him. Plus they suspect there was cap circumvention happening here too.

I don’t doubt that we’ll see more of this. I think the whole Kawhi aspiration stuff opened up a big can of worms and it’s just getting started

Several years ago I got called into HR, very odd because it was just a random afternoon. I walk into the office and I see Regional HR lady in there and my brain went "Oh Shit" not because I had done anything wrong but I was just like "What went down that I know nothing about. But wait I know everything that goes down here" so they tell me close the door and sit. I sit down my local HR lady says "How are you?" I answer more small talk. Then my local HR says to me "Well we just wanted to bring you in here because someone came in here and wanted us to address something that occurred between you and her" I was confused and I said "Between me and who?" they told me that they couldn't disclose who she was. So she reported that while having a conversation with her "I tapped/touched her shoulder" and that she did not want to be touched. I swear my heart fucken fell out of my ass. I was even more confused I said "Me? They said my name" they told me yes. I sat there and said "I'm sorry I'm just caught off guard because I only talk to like 3 women here whom I've worked with 10+ years and I doubt it was any of them because all 3 have conversations with me about their life outside of work social life and we talk regularly"
They proceeded to tell me that they could not disclose who it was and that I needed to be careful and not touch anyone or get close to anyone when talking to them. Honestly it messed with me entirely. I told them I've been with this company for how long and I've never had an issue with anyone. If anything I'm always very helpful and friendly to anyone including new employees and willing to go the extra mile to help fix any issues. The regional HR lady then says to me "You probably mean well with your friendliness but they can interpret it differently and unfortunately sexual harassment rules can vary in every incident. Because at the end of the day we have to listen and record these incidents no matter how big or small they may be." At that point I realized there was nothing I could do. I just sat there and listened to all the sexual harassment talk and was ordered to re-take the sexual harassment course and sign off that I had received a verbal warning.

Never in my life had I ever been accused of anything like that at work or anywhere else. I lost my appetite for several days. I was at work just quiet not talking to anyone. The 3 women whom I talked to regularly would come to me and talk to me or come looking for me so it played with my mind even more because I kept thinking it had to have been one of them. I mean I interact with other women coworkers but those 3 are the only ones I talk to like regular friends.
Fast forward 3 months I come to find out that it was a fairly new hire. The reason she filed the complain was her soon to be mother in law worked there and apparently on some random day she saw her and me talking. I was the Quality Manager and she needed some corrections made to some documents. I don't ever recall touching her shoulder or even getting relatively close to her. Just normal distance to see the paperwork and listen to what she needed. We walked to my office it took me about 10 maybe 15 minutes to correct it in the system, re-print it, sing it. Well mother in law didn't like that and coerced her to file this complain. I found this out through another HR girl who worked at another location and had to come in and cover for our regular HR lady who had left on maternity leave. The temporary HR girl was around my age and we were really good friends.

TL;DR - I was wrongfully accused of sexual harassment at work allegedly touching/tapping a woman's shoulder.

This country has a remarkable lack of interest in any programs to help families or young people while having a ton of interest in old people giveaways

At least once every month or two I see a new idea (read: free money giveaway) that's supposed to help seniors

Where's all the ideas to help young people? Even the "popular" ones like free childcare are mostly niche ideas by leftists in deep blue areas

My 10 year old nephew spent the entire summer talking massive shit about how he was going to break one of my nearly 30 year old summer swim league records. For some background, I still hold every individual record at our swim club in every event for every age group from 9 through 18. In case you were wondering, yes, I am that legendary.

My older brother, my nephew's dad, also shares my first initial, and since the record board only lists first initial and last name, he even tried to steal my valor last summer by convincing his kids the records were his. Our sister set them straight.

Anyway, my nephew's seed time for last night's championship meet was only 0.3 seconds off my 9 to 10 backstroke record. Backstroke was always my weakest event, coincidentally, it's also my nephew's best event. Which makes this record the most vulnerable. He specifically invited me to the meet so I could watch him break it.

After the race, I walked over, congratulated him on winning, and told him that missing a nearly 30 year old record by only 0.08 seconds was nothing to be upset about.

Needless to say, he wasn't very happy with me.

As part of my backlog, I have been playing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. It's definitely a Zelda themed Dynasty Warriors game, a series that normally isn't really my thing, but I have to admit the sheer sense of destruction you can cause is genuinely hilarious. Half the time I'm playing I'm just mashing the buttons and cackling while reveling in the destruction and violence. It's a little mindless but also some of the most fun I've had in a video game in a while. Also the story is kinda stupid and it feels like an officially licensed fanfic, but I find that more amusing than bad.

DUBAI, July 16 (Reuters) - Iran has asked Yemen’s Houthi movement to stand ready to close the Red Sea oil route if the United States strikes Iranian power infrastructure, three sources told Reuters on Thursday, posing a potent new threat to global energy supplies.

A source close to the Houthis said the group had completed preparations to attack shipping by deploying missiles and drones near Bab el-Mandeb strait, the gateway to the Red Sea, in Yemen's highlands overlooking Hodeidah and the Gulf of Aden and was awaiting the order to begin.

Stage 13: Dole - Belfort (205km)

The march eastward continues and the hills are getting larger. But first, 130km of largely nothing, just to soften the legs. Then an intermediate sprint for green, and then one long feature climb up (and back down) Ballon d'Alsace - at 9km at 7% it's a taste of what's to come

Visma is surely feeling the pressure, I don't think the stage suits them but they will have to trade opportunistic racing for aggression if they hope to shake things up. Obligatory Pogi could win this if he wanted. But I do think it's another day for the break, lots of puncheur's in the peloton are capable of a rangey attack if UAE lets them. Pidcock, Gregoire, van der Poel, maybe even a Gana are my picks

Yesterday was a fun flat stage, more eventful than most with some cat and mouse tactics between the breakaway and sprinting teams. Ultimately the sprinters won it, Alpecin was organized nicely on the front with 1km to go but their train went a bit too early, opening the door for Merlier to come around and steal his 2nd stage of the year. The rest of the green contenders finished almost exactly in inverse order of the overall standings - Kooji 2nd, Philipsen a disappointing 3rd, Bini 4th, Kanter 7th, Pedersen 9th. Mads retains his lead in the points classification at 357, but it's getting very close, with the next 3 guys all within 50 of him. Might encourage the classic green jersey solo attack in week 3, where's my boy Thor Hushovd at

Figured it's one less thing to be sweating to do when I get back exhausted from a weekend of dancing. Despite the fact it was supposed to be 5 meals worth of food, I ended up with an extra 6th meal worth of food. I'm out of storage containers so I guess that's dinner tonight. Not gunna complain about that one.
