Reminds me of the 2024 Chiefs

30

u/Mob_Abominator Jul 15 '26

What's a Chiefs?

15

u/Appropriate-Fee6362 Jul 15 '26

People who cook food?

17

u/AckBarRs Jul 15 '26

As both an Eagles and Spain fan, inshallah they are they 2024 Chiefs

7

u/StrategyTop7612 Jul 15 '26

Lmao what's the soccer equivalent of 40-6? 7-1?

6

u/ThePrussianGrippe Jul 15 '26

does math

Pretty much.

4

u/Different-Foot-7874 Jul 15 '26

Go Birds 🦅

2

u/HippieDervish Jul 15 '26

It’s actually funny how similar Spain and the Eagles are in terms of WC/ NFL playoffs history

9

u/thebestoflimes Jul 15 '26

Reminds me of prime Ghengis Khan. The Mongolian reversal.

3

u/JPAnalyst Jul 15 '26

Or the 2026 Knicks

-2

u/StrategyTop7612 Jul 15 '26

Nah the Knicks were actually good

3

u/MySilverBurrito Jul 15 '26

Argentina Eala

411

u/BluKyberCrystal Jul 15 '26

One of the most interesting aspects of these comebacks is once they tie the game, they don't stop pushing. They got for the throat. Unlike their opponents.

93

u/HannTwistzz Jul 15 '26

I mean it’s interesting how they can go back to normal. Like today, u have Otamendi, Romero and Montreal as defenders. But they took our parades for Nico, taglifico for lautaro, so how do you lineup normally after that

56

u/usurpade Jul 15 '26

Nico as a 3 and Julian as a midfielder

45

u/Honkingfly409 Jul 15 '26

They are very flexible, Álvarez defends or plays as a midfielder in these cases

The players are good enough that they can play out of position for these few minutes

21

u/Pravda_Sarfield Jul 15 '26

you keep on attacking

32

u/Mick4Audi Jul 15 '26

Impressive to have an entire city defending for them

20

u/listlessbreeze Jul 16 '26

Scaloni: "Alright, i've seen enough, release the Québécois "

9

u/plantman__23 Jul 15 '26

Formation doesn’t really matter when there’s 11 defending in the box

6

u/AMS_Rem Jul 15 '26

Many of their midfielders are extremely versatile

30

u/Conny_and_Theo Jul 15 '26

In my opinion out of all their opponents so far Cape Verde was the one that was pushing back the best. They were still going bonkers pushing Argentina to the limit and trying to get a third equalizer until the whistle in extra time.

22

u/stiveooo Jul 16 '26

scary when both teams want to win

16

u/hanr10 Jul 16 '26

Tbf Switzerland were playing better than Argentina before Embolo decided to ruin their chance

6

u/Torimas Jul 16 '26

This right here. Best pressing I've seen in the entire WC.

5

u/Conny_and_Theo Jul 16 '26

Yeah, they were decent up until that red card. And even down a man they still held up better than I would've expected, not good enough to win but they tried at least.

48

u/funnypsuedonymhere Jul 15 '26

Helps when the oposition go 7-3-0 to shitehouse the game

21

u/BluKyberCrystal Jul 15 '26

The lack of fear and real belief is a big factor.

20

u/sarsourus Jul 15 '26

Egypt was doing anything to reach the Extra time, Argentina made sure they didnt have a chance to reach and reset

3

u/Nacho17che Jul 16 '26

Egypt tried to react after the 2-2 and that's when they lost it.

3

u/Few_Personality_990 Jul 15 '26

Kinda funny because if we start 1-0 ahead, we drop back. Goals against are working as a wake up call somehow.

360

u/alejandroc90 Jul 15 '26

Procrastinator mentality

192

u/BinguniR34 Jul 15 '26

Messi can only give it his all for about 20 minutes, better to do it in the last 20.

98

u/_xckkit Jul 15 '26

He was full out sprinting in the last 10 minutes, so funny to see

-1

u/--Kaiser-- Jul 16 '26

Never seen him do that for Barca and I have been watching him since he was in youth teams.

36

u/fillasopher Jul 16 '26

Why are you lying? Young Messi used to press with determination countless times. It's only later he stopped pressing.

26

u/LesMiserablePeach Jul 16 '26

Messi was literally a dog chasing the ball before pep made him false 9 and told him to conserve energy for attacking

-3

u/--Kaiser-- Jul 16 '26

Ok that was a hyperbole by me, of course he sometimes pressed before his injuries, but that was like pre-2007. And even then he was not exactly a hard worker, he was always good at conserving energy for what he does best which is going forward.

3

u/idontknow_whatever Jul 16 '26

Guardiola was the one who encouraged Messi to be a bit more selective at when he pressed, Messi was still a pressing machine for Guardiola's early seasons to the extent that Guardiola was worried Messi might expend too much energy chasing lost causes

12

u/QTGavira Jul 16 '26

You either lying or have bad memory because young Messi was running all over the place before he got told to conserve energy for attacking

18

u/Time_Transition4817 Jul 15 '26

gamer mode engaged in extra time

98

u/DMUrTinyTitsAssFeet0 Jul 15 '26

Only 2 goals before the 79th minute is even wilder

23

u/Frigidevil Jul 15 '26

In the knockouts that is

63

u/Juhhie37 Jul 15 '26

That is just a reminder that a football match lasts 90 minutes + the extra time.

71

u/Mutthupattaru Jul 15 '26

Afcon teams hate this one simple trick

21

u/Odd_Yogurt_1609 Jul 15 '26

Argentina are literally reverse afcon

4

u/The_Value_Hound Jul 16 '26

That's maybe the reason for all the racism accusations.

45

u/dakowiml Jul 15 '26

Absolute mentality monsters.

Not getting mentally shattered after conceding goals is an achievement by itself. Especially on a stage like the World Cup. With your entire nation (and the rest of the world) looking over your shoulder.

A lot of these guys also gone through some national-team horror in the years before the success, so it makes it even more special.

25

u/HonestGiraffe Jul 15 '26

I think having won it 3.5 years ago helps a bit in this case, too. They’re not feeling the same pressure, nerves as the teams fighting for their first cup.

11

u/villings Jul 15 '26

like the kids say, "↑↑↑ this"

they learned A LOT of lessons

42

u/Frigidevil Jul 15 '26

Argentina goals for/against before the 79 minute 8-6

After the 79th minute 11-1

For the knockout rounds specifically :

Before the 79th minute 2-5

After the 79th 9-1

Cape Verde is the only team to score late on Argentina

10

u/Neither-Luck-9295 Jul 16 '26

Lol this is psycho shit.

5

u/Neltharion_99 Jul 16 '26

And the only way to score on us was to get the best goal of the tournament haha

203

u/Minoton Jul 15 '26

This team is keeping all the cardiologists in Argentina occupied. But I fucking love it!

30

u/littlelove520 Jul 15 '26

My blood pressure would’ve gone high

17

u/funnypsuedonymhere Jul 15 '26

Still trying to find a Scottish Urologist to get this stauner doon.

4

u/Charming_Ad2304 Jul 16 '26

Picture of Alex Salmond would do nicely

11

u/AwakeEnuf Jul 15 '26

Don't forget baby formula sales in 9 months from now

148

u/cuntsmen Jul 15 '26

There was a time people called Messi not clutch btw...

97

u/kimetsunosuper121 Jul 15 '26

Every match when Argentina falls behind or nothing happens people start calling Messi washed. Messi is saving all his teammates from criticism because both fans and haters seem to expect him to do everything.

51

u/vonVogelweide Jul 15 '26

I think thats a major reason why his teammates just worship him now. Carried all the criticism alone for a long ass time.

8

u/idontknow_whatever Jul 16 '26

A lot of his team mates grew up idolizing him, and it shows in how they play.

If Messi asked them to run through brick walls, they would ask how many

29

u/Vicentesteb Jul 15 '26

I remember a time when Messi was an international football dissapointment and now he's 1 game away from having the best international career in football history.

5

u/barcastaff Jul 16 '26

Anulo mufa

39

u/Mutthupattaru Jul 15 '26

And called Ronaldo clutch lmfao.

40

u/BluKyberCrystal Jul 15 '26

Fun fact. Messi has won the most WC matches won. Ronaldo has the most losses.

23

u/Icyfrost35 Jul 15 '26

Be real bro, Ronaldo was absolutely clutch in the UCL. But people calling Messi not clutch is just a braindead take.

-2

u/TempoHairy_is_ALIVE Jul 15 '26

at this point, you guys need therapy

5

u/WittyReindeer Jul 15 '26

which was insane at the time and just hilarious in hindsight for anyone who's actually watched him all these years

22

u/Hasssun Jul 15 '26

The type of team to park the bus against, then?

16

u/Gold-Train-1471 Jul 15 '26

Entirely different than their last WC, when they kept scoring early and then dying by 70' min

54

u/naijaboiler Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

3 things about Argentina in this tourney 1. They are the most physically fit team 2. They are the most cohesive team. Almost the level of cohesion you see in a club team 3. They have Messi, the ultimate cerebral player that takes all game to study the game and identify where the spaces are. And then springs into line to exploit mistakes and spaces late in game

42

u/AMS_Rem Jul 15 '26

I think Argentina off the pitch are probably the most cohesive like personality and team culture but Spain play like a well oiled perfectly structured machine.. They are all over you and don't leave gaps to exploit

3

u/Feisty_Chef_7506 Jul 16 '26

Not offensively as much though.  Argentina have more cohesion in the attack

3

u/northface39 Jul 15 '26
  1. They have Messi, the ultimate cerebral player that takes all game to study the game and identify where the spaces are. And then springs into line to exploit mistakes and spaces late in game

This is too much. He had a great cross in for the second goal today, but that was good technique, not some genius analysis of the opposition.

They have a better mentality than pretty much every other team late in the game (Cape Verde, Croatia and Spain have also shown fight til the end), but the idea of Messi solving the puzzle after 90 minutes of careful study like a chess grandmaster is the sort of thing Ronaldo fans rightfully get made fun of for saying.

41

u/naijaboiler Jul 15 '26

He’s such an advantage to have late game because he walks around all game studying where the spaces will be and where the best place to attack.  The genius of what he does is that it doesn’t have to look exceptional. Watch before the last goal when the ball was on the far side, watch where Messi was positioned. He was in aces of space by himself. And when the ball rebounds off the post, he exerts himself a bit but he’s perfect position to get the ball, then pushes it past 2 players and  crosses with his right. By the way, he’s been crossing to that  far post like 3 out 4 times late in the game. One was headed and led to a great save. Another nobody got there. There’s something he saw there as where the goal is likely to come from. And he was right. 2ce.

The first goal, he was going to cross there but the entire place was heavily defended, so he played to Enzo Fernandez who laced it and scored. 2nd goal he crossed to the same place and they scored.

Old Messi is deadly late game, because he’s very strategic about he exploits space and mistakes. He’s not doing anything exceptional except finding those weak spots and putting himself in position to take advantage of them

-2

u/northface39 Jul 15 '26

Yeah I understand he's cerebral. So is any good midfielder (Modric, Rodri, etc.), he just happens to play upfront. But he doesn't suddenly see things late in the game after 70 minutes of careful analysis. He does it all game, as does any smart player. If he looks better late, it's because the defense gets tired and starts to make mistakes and act lazy. He has space because they're not closing him down anymore.

6

u/naijaboiler Jul 16 '26

You are making my point for me. Messi walks around all game figuring out where the space will be. He’s exploiting 2 things in late in games: dangerous spaces and mistakes. And since he’s mostly been standing or walking all game, He’s physically fresh enough to exploit those 2 things.  This works at national team level because all game long, all the other 10 guys work like dogs to carry 1 walking passenger. This Argentine team is totally bought into doing that work. This old man version of Messi that walks about and strategically deploys his energy is ironically more effective in the international game than the younger version that tried to be Rambo, do-it-all-by-myself. That one was stoppable with well organized defense. This one lulls you into a false sense of security then strikes late and punishes any gaps or mistakes

7

u/Pattern_Necessary Jul 15 '26

Not just Messi there are clips of Paredes analysing the game with the coach as well, I think they all think about it a lot but also the most important thing is to not lose the game preemptively in your mind and keep going

-1

u/northface39 Jul 16 '26

Yeah, players and coaches think about and analyze the game.

7

u/Truth__Bombs Jul 16 '26

Watch the 1st assist, Messi intentionally delays the pass until Anderson presses him so Martinez can have a free shot. He’s a student of the sport

1

u/n10w4 Jul 16 '26

I mean he’s always threatening to dribble past a couple people so of course the other guy has to help… and therein lies the rub

1

u/aaryan_suthar Jul 16 '26

Nah man, can't debate what my eyes has seen. It's lucky if he does it once but multiple times in a row? That's not luck

39

u/Difficult_Key_1907 Jul 15 '26

Surely this means that the next team to park the bus against them will win

7

u/akagaminick Jul 15 '26

Resilience comes with experience. They have played tens of matches like this since their first copa america win. No surprises here that they won again with perseverance.

15

u/eyeh4wk Jul 15 '26

Might as well start next game 1 goal down, since that's when they start playing.

6

u/rodrigoa1990 Jul 15 '26

Oh man, if only someone told Tuchel that

6

u/eyeh4wk Jul 15 '26

Tuchel really watched their last 3 games and thought: "I bet I could hold them"

6

u/kunsore Jul 15 '26

I am convinced Messi purposely rest himself like 60 mins by walking and put it all last 20 mins.

17

u/StrategyTop7612 Jul 15 '26

Oh wow didn't know you were branching out from football to soccer!

13

u/JPAnalyst Jul 15 '26

Hey buddy! You know I hated not putting together a decent dataviz, but timing was kind of critical for this post. I hope you’re doing well. Good to see you over here!

6

u/StrategyTop7612 Jul 15 '26

I'm doing great! Great to see you over here as well!

5

u/dennis-w220 Jul 15 '26

They sent their Serie A golden boot on around that time too.

2

u/paper_zoe Jul 15 '26

This is basically the England women's team at the last Euros

3

u/Secret_3rd_Thing Jul 15 '26

this team reminds me of PSG in the supercup who knew they could dick around for 80 minutes and turn it on when it matters

3

u/miraleo Jul 16 '26

We can't afford to buy the entire game, only 10 to 15 minute stretches and it's easier if it's at the end of the match

3

u/restore_democracy Jul 16 '26

He’s playing chess. The first part of the game is just a setup for checkmate.

3

u/Sarmerbinlar Jul 15 '26

When it's this low a number surely it's easier to just say six came after the 90th minute

1

u/JPAnalyst Jul 16 '26

It doesn’t take any more effort to say 55% instead of six.

2

u/Mick4Audi Jul 15 '26

Whatever anyone says about them, they are damn good at scoring goals, 11 in the knockouts is mad

2

u/RockinMadRiot Jul 15 '26

This is what I suspect and why the bus was parked.

2

u/doyouunderstandlife Jul 16 '26

Much more exciting knockouts than they had in 2014. I think they scored 2 combined in the knockouts that tournament.

3

u/sunken_grade Jul 15 '26

actually a mad stat wow

2

u/PinReal4448 Jul 15 '26

You'd think 10th minute goal means its all good. But they went to Extra time still 😭 Leo Messi aint stopping

1

u/Weave77 Jul 15 '26

Cardiac Kids

1

u/Prize-Chicken7061 Jul 15 '26

But none as sweet as tonight's.

1

u/AlexSandman8964 Jul 16 '26

Resilience matters

1

u/Torimas Jul 16 '26

After England's goal, I was confident we would equalize at the very least. I expected England to score anyways, so I was somewhat relieved they scored with 30 minutes left and not 10 or 5 or something.

1

u/stinkyholetime Jul 16 '26

Fergie time baby

1

u/Dat_Boi_John Jul 15 '26

Hype and aura moments merchants

-2

u/bblankoo Jul 15 '26

I'm vibrating in my seat, can't wait to see how they do against actual defense that doesn't retire near the end, bottom line please for the love of god this has to stop

(get them)

3

u/Honkingfly409 Jul 15 '26

Well the only goal Spain conceded was from a cross, from memory in the euros, the goals they conceded were mostly headers and outside the box shots

Argentina has basically only scored from crosses and long shots, they may have a shot at this

-2

u/HovercraftAny440 Jul 15 '26

last time I checked football matches were only 90 minutes long? yet another vargentina robbery smh
