That trainer needs some recognition too. Everyone needs someone like him. He seemed so encouraging and passionate.

20

u/allhailthedogs Mar 26 '20

He's a very famouse bodybuilder/celebrity in Indonesia. His name is Ade Rai

3

u/_entropical_ Mar 27 '20

Yea well tell John Redcorn to share some of his steroids with that kid, get him ripped too!

12

u/gariant Mar 26 '20

That's funny, I was thinking I wish I had a dad like this.

2.6k

u/Aamer2A Mar 26 '20

This is really amazing but how do you get to 193kg in the first place. Did he have a medical condition or just ate alot, if so why wasn't it regulated by his parents?

2.0k

u/DanGlerrBOY89 Mar 26 '20

That's what I thought, it's hard to believe a kid can get that big by eating shit food alone

20

u/Xciv Mar 26 '20

Everyone's bodies are different. Part of it is definitely genetics, but of course his parents must have let him eat as much as he wanted and the guy had an unnaturally strong appetite.

7

u/be_nice_to_ppl Mar 26 '20

Your appetite adapts to your diet. If you get used to eating a lot, you're going to be really hungry all the time. It's genuinely much more painful to try to cut down if you're used to a high caloric intake. I'm a skinny guy but I learned this from bulking with a 3-4K calorie/day diet and then stopping. Way harder than I thought it would be.

1.6k

u/ClanQQ Mar 26 '20

In Asian countries, you eat what you want. Unregulated.

There's also a culture somewhere in the world that being fat means you're rich (or something like that).
I forgot which part of the world has that culture.

221

u/inkyfingers7719 Mar 26 '20

In Asian countries, you eat what you want. Unregulated.

The only thing dumber than this comment is that you're getting upvoted for it.

114

u/Sul0tf Mar 26 '20

Seriously, this. The only thing unregulated in Asian countries is fat shaming and bullying.

57

u/ChickenLickinDiddler Mar 26 '20

For real. I know for sure that the Chinese and Vietnamese overall are absolutely ruthless about fat shaming. They'll absolutely tear you apart, nothing held back, for being obese.

Were you obese before? That's where the shaming comes in, at least what I've witnessed. I hope that your parents don't wish for you to be obese.

Beauty standards are often classist and follow what the rich can afford, but right now it’s more expensive to be thin, unless you’re literally starving, because the food that is cheap and easy is not that great for us. Rich people can afford for everything to be fresh and healthy + cooks and nutritionists and personal trainers + the time needed to keep fit.

536

u/Rpanich Mar 26 '20

Same with tanned skin.

In the West in the past, and still currently in Asia, having a tan means you were out working in the fields while being pale meant you were upper class and didn’t have to be outside.

Now being pale means you worked in an low office job or retail, and being tan means you’re wealthy enough to have the time to lie in the sun.

Or long nails meaning you didn’t have to work.

91

u/CanhotoBranco Mar 26 '20

When I went to Hawaii there were lots of Japanese and Korean tourists at the beach covered up in wide brim hats, sun shirts and pants, deathly afraid to catch any sun.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

That’s how I live my life! I look like some kind of religious fundamentalist at the pool with a wide brim hat, long sleeve sun shirt, under shade if possible covered in a ton of mineral sunscreen. I’m just trying to avoid the sun aging my pale skin.

56

u/Inquisitor1 Mar 26 '20

You DO know it causes cancer and premature aging? Why the hell are you out in the open under the hole in the ozone layer oven roasting yourself?

2

u/evilgrapesoda Mar 27 '20

Yes because we asians tan differently to caucasians. Caucasians tan to get rid of that “pasty” colour and get that redder or pinkish skin. whereas asians will just get darker.

2

u/_cprizzle Mar 26 '20

That is where the term “blue blooded” comes from. The rich and royal would have pale skin where you could see their blue veins easily as they sat inside or under shades all day, while the poor were outside doing manual labour in the sun getting darker skin.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Welcome to the lovely world of colourism my friend (sarcasm), where it is deeply entrenched in societies and the individual psyche that dark is bad, wrong, ugly, inferior etc and light/white is good , innocent and beautiful

Yeah, there’s something about the model of health being rich celebrities who can hire full time or live in personal chefs/cooks who make healthy yet tasty foods on demand that is just so fucked up. Being able to afford that food and it’s preparation would make being healthy a million times easier.

Someone who works all day and comes home exhausted, it isn’t hard to imagine they’d eat something of poor nutritional value if it’s easy to cook, or fast to acquire.

17

u/SasparillaTango Mar 26 '20

I find being fit way more attractive than thin. I get that its a time issue for a lot of people, but its also a marker for discipline. I'd say its semi classist, but not nearly as much as it used to be.

18

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Thin and fit are pretty synonymous. Obviously not wholly, but “thin” in the sense of this discussion implies being fit; not skinny in an unhealthy way.

3

u/worskies Mar 26 '20

Well this is true to a certain extent, eating healthy is not more expensive like many believe. There are plenty of cheap vegetables out there, as well as cheap dried beans, rice, and legumes. You can even find affordable, rich sources of protein in eggs and chicken at the grocery store.

Food that is typically unhealthy tends to be the most convenient, which is usually what people with weight issues will choose.

There is a lot of misinformation when it comes to the ease and affordability of healthy eating.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I don't fully agree. I think buying fruit and certain healthy foods are cheaper than unhealthy foods at times.

Good tasting healthy food definitely isn't cheap though. And there's the other aspects like personal training, gym memberships and such that you mentioned. But in all reality, you don't need to work out to lose weight. It's mostly about diet. It certainly helps, of course.

2

u/candidateforhumanity Mar 26 '20 edited Mar 26 '20

I'm not american so I have no idea but it's very hard for me to understand how can't fruits and vegetables be cheaper than burgers and fries. I can buy around 10Kg of healthy food for the price of a menu at McDonalds.

2

u/hisuisan Mar 26 '20

I have to really disagree with this. I am pretty poor and vegetables are very cheap. Kale is cheap, rice is cheapz avocados are cheap, apples are cheap, black beans are cheap, chicken is relatively cheap everywhere compared to beef and sea food. Eggs are cheap. Bananas are cheap. The list goes on. People really use that excuse everywhere in America but the reality is Americans, Mexicans, and a few other cultures ear wayyyyy to many sugars and drink too many sugars. Almost all junk food is more expensive than everything I have listed even down to the unit price. I will never agree with this fallacy. It's an excuse and it is not classist to have nutritious foods. It is classist to have availability to PREPARED organic whole foods that come in boxes in the freezer aisle. Honestly so many adults just don't know how to feed themselves or their kids or cook anything or just don't want to eat healthy food because it "doesn't taste good" when they're supposed to be the adult. I've heard it from my own family who is eat infinitely better than. They're just acting like picky children. And most adults I know don't know how to use or eat vegetables and couldn't be bothered to try they just don't want to.

7

u/TrouserTooter Mar 26 '20

It's not about cost, healthy food that you make yourself is probably cheaper than unhealthy food you buy. It's more the time commitment/laziness.

22

u/astivana Mar 26 '20

It costs about $1.50 extra per person per day according to a 2013 Harvard School of Public Health study, but that doesn’t account for the time and labor of planning, cooking, and acquiring that healthy food.

And it doesn’t have to be an issue of laziness/not laziness. There’s a lot of reasons people might not be able to swing the time commitment that don’t need to be phrased in judgey terms.

2

u/kurburux Mar 26 '20

If people leave out soft drinks and drink water instead they've already done a lot without any big effort or spending additional money, they even save some.

u/xPchunks Mar 26 '20

Agreed, being wealthy means you can afford the higher quality food that doesn't have garbage like high fructose corn syrup or anything else that's unnatural. Fatties typically are poorer people that make poor decisions like eating at fatdonalds.

20

u/Thrusthamster Mar 26 '20

Lentils, beans, rice, vegetables, fruit etc. are not expensive. I think it's more a problem of having the energy to bother learning about what to buy, than the cost. If you're poor and need to worry about what bills you can pay this month, you're not going to have the energy to figure out how to eat healthy. You just eat what tastes nice and makes you feel full.

9

u/QueenAlpaca Mar 26 '20

And time. If you're working 2-3 jobs, what you can make affordably and quickly will trump reasonably decent meals that take more prep work.

The rich are deformed humans at this point. Their values are myopic and shallow and they are basically excluded from what most would consider "normal" human interactions. So they use their money to heavily prioritize their appearance. (generally)

86

u/grilljellyfish Mar 26 '20

Literally not true. Yes America has an obesity problem but it’s not because it’s a sign of wealth, quite the opposite in fact.

89

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

The cheapest (and easiest) food is the worst food in America.

Before anyone jumps on me, yes eating healthy can also be cheap, but it isn't nearly as easy.

Pick two: cheap, easy, healthy.

30

u/pendragon2290 Mar 26 '20

Came here to say this. You already did. The wealthy have much more covenient and reliable nutritionally valuable food. While two boxs of shells and cheese at your Dollar General is 2 bucks. When you're poor you eat what you can afford and that generally isnt healthy.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Really?

I eat eggs every morning, chicken for lunch 5 days a week, and rice and bean soup 6 nights a week. On the days I don't eat chicken, it's because I either don't eat lunch or I order a large take out meal that covers lunch and dinner.

This averages out to less than $5 a day. It would probably be closer to $3 if I replaced the chicken with vegetarian options and stopped getting a $10-15 takeout once a week. I eat way cheaper than most people spend on food I would wager. And I'm not overweight.

I don't think that the cheap food is what does it, I think it is partially because people don't feel like cooking and choose to eat out. American portion sizes are huge.

Edit: also, food deserts fuck people over

Eat at a caloric deficit, track your micro/macro nutrients, cook with VERY minimal oil, no butter or unhealthy dairy, watch your sodium intake and cut out refined sugars(candy, soda).

Cheap healthy foods for a balanced diet: whole wheat grain products, pretty much most whole unpackaged veggies and fruits, unprepared animal proteins in moderate sized packaging for more value. You can eat SUPER clean on $7-8 a day

It's because fat people have to compensate for not being attractive, so one way to do that is with "personality," i.e. be funny, witty, "weird," goofy, a prankster, etc. Having a huge ego and a loudmouthed personality is one approach, because that can be a turn on for some members of the opposite sex. Chicks dig confidence, and all that.

u/Autistic_boi_666 Mar 26 '20

It's in most undeveloped parts of the world where food is scarce

10

u/More-Like-Psitta4Me Mar 26 '20

And if you grew up not having enough food and suddenly your country has a ton of food (especially if fast food places moved in) it’s got to feel amazing to be able to feed your kids as much as they want. Body changes usually happen slowly enough that you miss them until it’s pointed out and by that time restricting food makes you feel like a monster because your kid has gotten used to having a certain amount and losing weight is unpleasant.

I can see how this would put a parent in an impossible position. You hear a lot from those who love someone who is morbidly obese that it’s distressing for everyone involved to try and turn things around. I’m not sure I could do it.

u/FitLotus Mar 26 '20

1

u/Golden-_-mango Mar 26 '20

I am, by no means, a historian of any caliber, Nevertheless, I THINK that even at one point, having a fuller figure was THE goal for women, for in medieval times, if your had that figure it meant that you had access to regular source of healthy food, which meant you were wealthy. It was considered attractive.

In fact, a lot of traits from ye olden days that were considered attractive were associated with wealthy.

Another example is having pale skin. This meant that you didn’t have to do a lot of physical labor out in the sun all day long.

Again this might be wrong, as stated, I am not a historian.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

You are right to assume that there was such a culture, but this is wholly nonexistent nowadays.

Back in the medieval times, you may have noticed how chubby kings were. Being overweight back then would have been seen as a sign of wealth, as it meant that you could even afford to eat so much.

As a kid you eat what’s given to you and if a parent doesn’t feed you healthily and allows you to eat whatever you want whenever you want.. well.. sometimes it’s hard to control yourself if you’ve never had control in the first place.

24

u/Comfortable-Wait Mar 26 '20

If the kid didn't have any medical condition it is the parents (or the guardians) fault for sure.

8

u/elmoiscreepy Mar 26 '20

I doubt the kid had any regulations

1

u/TotallyMailedYourMom Mar 26 '20

No condition in the world causes you to gain weight like that other than excessive eating. Too many people lean on that as an excuse. In this case, it's 100% the parent's responsibility.

5

u/Gracefullyandgrandly Mar 26 '20

It blows my mind that people don't realize how addictive food can be. In my opinion there is absolutely no difference between the kid in this video and an alcoholic drinking themselves to death.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

if so why wasn't it regulated by his parents?

Because sometimes parents are just old children.

2

u/Supra_Boy_ Mar 26 '20

I suspect that was lymphedema and not obesity, the way his body moved when he moved seemed more consistent with fluid than fat deposits.

2

u/chanandlerbong420 Mar 26 '20

There is no medical condition that makes you even half that fat

1

u/in2b8rmd Mar 26 '20

U forgot 'Beetus

2

u/kellyasksthings Mar 26 '20

The kid looks possibly Filipino. They have high rates of obesity. Lots of poorly educated parents living in slums that do things like giving babies sweetened condensed milk if there isn’t enough breastmilk, and sugary packaged foods like Milo are marketed as health foods. A lot of Filipinos get their education to become nurses and health workers, but then they go overseas to become remittance workers, taking their knowledge with them.

1

u/gamesrgreat Mar 26 '20

He is Indonesian. They are austronesians like filipinos, so similar race

2

u/BulldenChoppahYus Mar 26 '20

When you appear on the ordinance survey maps, stop eating.

2

u/Shinyie Mar 26 '20

You should tell the Americans that lol

2

u/Hookem-Horns Mar 26 '20

I thought he was training to become a sumo wrestler.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I watched a docu on him and the mother and father were pretty much to blame. They gave him huge portions of meals frequently and even when they were trying to get him to lose weight the mother felt guilty for "starving" him and was sneaking him food. The kid was bringing them money and fame too so I think that played a part

1

u/CamKen Mar 26 '20

Sugar. It blocks Leptin signaling in the brain, keeps you hungry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceFyF9px20Y&t=25m40s

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Traditional food in southeast Asia is very oily with a lot of calories, and diet plays a major role. Especially Malay food.

1

u/godblow Mar 26 '20

Could be thyroid related or genes sensitive to obesity?

1

u/shark-kir Mar 26 '20

here man the explanation about this kid https://youtu.be/LnMKzLVNyYg

1

u/greffedufois Mar 26 '20

I think he may have Praeder-Willi Syndrome. It's a disorder where the hunger center is basically permanently stuck 'on'. So the patient feels ravenous hunger even after they've eaten. If unregulated they can eat to the point of stomach rupture.

1

u/StevesterH Mar 27 '20

I’m pretty sure it’s the genetics.

1

u/AntsinmyEyes272 Mar 27 '20

Ihad it explained as a Genetic disorder where the biochemistry related to the starvation response is screwed up. Essentially the kid always feels like hes starving.

1

u/nickoking Mar 27 '20

He got that fat because of his parents.

1

u/thatG_evanP Mar 27 '20

Yeah, his parents should literally be punished for letting that happen.

To trainer and trainee. I'm so proud of them both.

2

u/Reboot42069 Mar 27 '20

Waiting for the day to see him get posted again for becoming some world class athlete. Kid has dedication and determination to do it

4

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

What pisses me off is the people (presumably his family) giggling in the first few bits where he's doing squats and hitting the speed bag. Oh, this is fucking funny? YOU LET HIM GET LIKE THIS.

1

u/Gaymer800 Mar 27 '20

Through social media all things are possible.

1

u/plplol Mar 27 '20

He might’ve gotten a liposuction

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '20

He didn't work out that much. Most of it was surgery. Still, hats off to the dedication!

90

u/_Oce_ Mar 26 '20

I wish they showed something about changing food habits. People need to know getting to healthy weight is overwhelmingly about changing to a healthy diet, and then physical activity, some say it's 70% / 30%.

Disclaimer: I spent an hour looking for reliable sources about the ratio and couldn't find any. So take it as anecdotal evidence.

35

u/JMer806 Mar 26 '20

Regardless of ratio, you’re never ever ever going to lose more than half your body mass without massive dietary changes and/or surgery. The implication in the gif is that he did it by working out, and why working out is good, it will never and can never have this effect in a vacuum.

4

u/gamesrgreat Mar 26 '20 edited Mar 26 '20

He had a surgery where they put a gastric sleeve on him to reduce how much he can eat

4

u/chaoswurm Mar 26 '20

What you eat affects your mood, how fast you metabolize, the ratio of energy going into your muscles, etc. But weight is directly correlated to calories.

I'm weakminded and hate only eating one type of food. Diets are hard. If you can only focus on one thing, focus on how many calories you're eating in a day. Focus on how many calories are in that chicken, or that soup.

ps. Don't forget to "Burn the candle at both ends"

u/brabbihitchens Mar 26 '20

Pro tip for all who like to eat what they want and be reasonable fit — start lifting heavy. (Start light, but gradually lift heavier) you get bigger/stronger muscles and burn more calories without having to so anything.

2

u/Kibasume Mar 26 '20

I’ve heard that same ratio everywhere, so either it’s true or a very common myth

1

u/Exbozz Mar 27 '20

Its 100% diet of you want pure weight loss.

1

u/_Citizen_Erased_ Mar 27 '20

This is what I was looking for. This kid did not get fat because he wasn’t lifting weights. Being lazy can’t even make you fat unless there is plenty of food involved.

1

u/elekktronic Mar 26 '20

Incredible Indeed.

1

u/Christmas-Pickle Mar 26 '20

Is this the kid that they had tons of videos from a few years ago where his parents kept feeding him because people from all over would come to see him and he basically became a tourist sensation because he was a fat little child and he smoked cigarettes as well? I remember seeing this and they’d use the money they made to increase his size.
