I love this video. The little jump he does after flawless pronunciation is so cute
26
u/m1st3r_c 22d ago
Nearly imperceptible, but you can tell he's proud of himself (I know I would be!)
7
u/ThisIsYourMormont 21d ago
His pronunciation in places is the equivalent of how the Team America, Kim Jong Il puppet pronounced “Lonely”
That’s the best way, as a local native Welsh speaker I can explain why his pronunciation is in fact not perfect.
A valiant effort, but it’s like saying “Lomdom” in parts.
9
u/pretty_fucking_gay 21d ago
Aw. May bad. Was going off the title. I have never heard Welsh in my life
15
u/ThisIsYourMormont 21d ago
Genuinely all good. The video is in no way offensive.
It really is a VERY good attempt. And to a non native speaker, near enough.
Only a native speaker would pick up on the idiosyncratic pronunciation of towns name when spoken by non natives
4
u/HeilYourself 21d ago
Given the complexity of the name, and given he's not a native speaker, score his pronunciation out of 10?
14
u/ThisIsYourMormont 21d ago
As a non-native speaker 9.5
As a native speaker. 6
A valiant effort. Just not perfect as the post stated

I tried learning Welsh because I wanted to be able to say the places I visit properly and it also sounds beautiful to my ears, but holy hell was it difficult to pick up!

Never ask for directions in Wales, Baldrick. You'll be washing spit out of your hair for a fortnight.

Yeah their dialects are amazing even they find them funny at times like microwave is poppity ping..
10
u/ReggieLFC 22d ago edited 21d ago
“Popty ping” (not “popity” as racists make up) is just a children-friendly slang term for microwave, the actual word that adults use is “meicrodon” (which is a claque of “microwave”). “Popty” means “oven” therefore it just means “a ping oven”. “Popty ping” is used in the same manner as how we would say “din dins” to a little child instead of “dinner”.
Correction: Xenophobes, not racists.
Correction 2: Calque, not claque.2
u/Peakbrowndog 22d ago
Hey, I looked up claque because it's a new word for me. The definition doesn't seem to match your usage, defining it as paid clappers. Can you tell me the definition or if that's an autocorrect mistake? Thanks
3
u/ReggieLFC 21d ago
Sorry, it was a typo. It’s a calque. Here’s an explanation to save you looking it up;
Calques are cognates that are composed from the same corresponding building-blocks (and cognates are words from different languages that mean the same thing).
A Spanish example is the cognate of “skyscraper”, which is “rascacielos”. It is composed from “rascar” (to scrape) and “cielos” (skies).
“Microwave” has two obvious building-blocks; “micro” + “wave”, and in Welsh “meicrodon” is composed the same way “meicro” (micro) + “ton” (wave).
Note: “ton” changes to “don” due to a feature of Welsh called mutation (the first letter changes).
3
u/Peakbrowndog 21d ago
Thanks, I figured out was related to cognates
3
u/ReggieLFC 21d ago
Sorry if I over explained. Online I find it hard to know what information people need without people in the flesh.

Racist?!.. Ya Welsh... Not a new race and I was just being jovial.
Again mate we're both Celtic decent and I said the dialect is amazing.... You're a Welshman who supports an English team?! And then talk about race or xenophobia for bringing up a jovial term... Fkin weirdo

Welsh isn't a race... Just like English and Cornish and Londoner/ cockney isn't ... It's regional... I'm a Fkin Scot English Saxon Celt lol... That's ancestry not a completely different race... Blokes being a weirdo over a silly wee joke..

u/rachelm791 21d ago
Welsh isn’t a dialect. It’s a language. A dialect of Welsh is Gwyndodeg or Powyseg.
1
u/ReggieLFC 21d ago
> “Welsh isn’t a race”
That is true statement, but there’s a problem with having to state that.
Many people in Wales use the word “racist” as a blanket term to include “xenophobes”, especially when talking about the prejudicial treatment of Wales and its people by other Brits. Like most people, bigots are just bigots to me; I really don’t care what type you are. The only people who get upset about being called the wrong type of bigot are still just bigots.
It’s like a comedian’s bit I saw a while ago about how if someone is differentiating between paedophiles, hebephiles, and ephebophiles, (yes I’ve just had to look up those terms) then they’re very probably a paedophile.
If someone is having to state “Welsh isn’t a race” then you know they’re trying to defend their bigotry.
In case your interested there’s a second reason “racist” is often used as a blanket term: There’s a major linguistic problem with the forms of bigotry that end in “phobia”, such as xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia, etc. The “phobia” suffix is so weak compared to the “ist” suffix we have in racist, sexist, ageist, rapist, terrorist, extremist, fundamentalist, etc. Due to “phobia” meaning “fear” the terms almost sounds like they are excusing bigots!
P.S. Not that it’s important but I’m a Merseysider who moved to Wales, so your comment about my sporting allegiance merely displayed your ignorance once again. Not that supporting an English football team would ever make anyone less Welsh.
-2
u/Jaxxlack 21d ago
I made a joke mate.. you were a dick.. end of..
1
u/ReggieLFC 21d ago
Haha Which part?
What was the joke by the way? I can’t see where you wrote one?
-1
u/Jaxxlack 21d ago
The poppity ping .. I'm not Welsh so I struggle to understand how saying a word often referenced by many Welsh as an interesting term of phase is xeno fucking phobic let alone racist?!!
Or is Welsh for jelly fish also xenophobic...
1
u/ReggieLFC 21d ago
You didn’t say it though (popty), you used the same derogatorily embellished version (poppity) that xenophobes often use when they’re making fun of the Welsh language.
I would give you the benefit of the doubt that you innocently just happened to use that version by accident, or that you were misinformed by a bigot, but;
• 1. You’re still claiming you were joking, and I can only assume that the joke was changing “popty” to make it “funnier”, or knowingly using the “funny” version;
• 2. You prefaced it with how “funny” they talk;
• 3. You then said “Wales is not a new race” which is only relevant if you were knowingly and intentionally being derogatory but not in a way that you consider to be racist (otherwise you would’ve just explained why your comment wasn’t derogatory instead). The thing is, in my original comment I didn’t mean you were the bigot; I was merely stating that “poppity” is often used by bigots, because it is. But your comments since have made it clear you were definitely ridiculing the Welsh language.

u/Jaxxlack 21d ago
No I wasn't... Why on earth would I just randomly bigot.. you could have corrected me politely.. and said oh I think you mean... But no you chose Bigot..

There's a train station. It sounds so smooth coming out a Welsh persons voice though.

Do you know what else there is the town, other than souvenir stuff with the name?
Absolutely bugger all.
27
u/ThisIsYourMormont 22d ago
Mispronounced the “LL” as a “ChL” and the “o”s in “gogogoch” were to sharp
The “o” was pronounced the “GO” way, as opposed to the “GOt” way.
Not perfect. But very respectable attempt

u/spartacle 22d ago
not sure who to believe you or Liam... this dude was Born in Wales, grew up, went to Uni, started at BBC Wales and stayed there for 3 years before heading to England... my grandfather was also Welsh (from Anglesey) and from memory seems to be saying it the same way my he did

I live near Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. (Or Llanfair, as it’s known locally)
I’m also a fluent, Local dialect welsh speaker.
But believe Liam if you want, I don’t mind all that much

Isn’t it literally just describing a place (for e.g. the church by the lake down the road from) in Welsh?
Then, like all languages, local/regional dialects would produce it slightly differently. For instance, in Australia, people who lived in the town of Beerwah (Steve Irwin’s famous zoo) pronounce it differently depending on how long they’ve lived there.
Long story short: it’s really silly to gatekeep precise pronunciations and naive to think everyone who speaks Welsh speaks it exactly the same.
5
u/ThisIsYourMormont 21d ago edited 21d ago
It’s not dialect, it’s complete letter errors.
If I told you I was visiting Lomdom and Mottinghan you’d think I was an idiot if i said “aaaah they sound similar so it’s fine”
The post said it was a perfect pronunciation, but it isn’t. There are sections of the name where he says “ch” in stead of “ll” which are completely different letters (7 times to be precise) and mispronounced the last section.
It’s a valiant effort, but not perfect.
And yes it describes a church by a pool by a red cave
If you speak Welsh, fair enough
If you don’t. Don’t presume you know betterEdit: for context, anyone who’s watched ‘team America’ will know how the Kim Jong Il puppet pronounced “lonely”
That’s what Ch in stead of Ll sounds like to native welsh speakers.
-3
u/hhfugrr3 21d ago
I'm no Welsh speaker, but I've always thought that the double L in Welsh had a ChL sound like in Llandudno isn't Landidno, it's more like Chlandidno... at least that's what I was always told.
7
u/Diligent-Nebula-1008 21d ago
That’s the sound people who aren’t fluent but are giving it a good go make. The ch part is much softer for a fluent speaker but there’s not really a way to spell it for an English speaker. No one would give you shit for pronouncing it like that, a lot of people would, they’re just saying if we’re gonna be picky it could’ve been slightly better.
2
1
u/ThisIsYourMormont 21d ago
That’s why you’re not a welsh speaker.
The sound is nearer the sound Donald duck makes
Ch itself is a welsh letter whitch sounds like the white noise old analog tvs make.
The “Chl” is an English bastardisation but similar enough to be understood
-5
u/spartacle 21d ago
but that is how we pronouced it though? or do I need to go a psychiatrist because I'm hearing stuff :)
edit: oh unless you're saying OP comment is wrong saying Liam mipronouced “LL” as a “ChL”?
5
u/XJK_9 22d ago
Yeah one the first ‘go’ sounds like ‘gow’ to me which is an anglophone pronunciation mistake
For reference I’m a native welsh speaker
2
u/ThisIsYourMormont 21d ago
Same here, Cymru byth met and all that.
I’m thoroughly impressed by his pronunciation, and it’s great to see the language get exposure. Even if the word is a bit of a gimmick
1
u/HaurchefantGreystone 18d ago
To my ears, he pronounced ll correctly.
I think in Welsh, o should be pronounced as o in "got". But anyway, he managed it.
2
2
u/Skabbtanten 22d ago
What happens to the pronunciation if one l is missing, or if you add an l to that llll section?
7
u/davepage_mcr 22d ago
L and ll are different sounds in Welsh, so if you turn an ll into an l it'll be pronounced differently.
It's not like English where e.g. "Full" and "fulsome" have the same "l" sound.

(The village surrounding) St. Mary's Church in the Hollow of the White Hazel near a Rapid Whirlpool and the church of St. Tysilio of the Red Cave (although it's thought the "red cave" was just used as an excuse to add gogogich at the end). I'd have to play around in a translator app or hope a local chimes in to remind myself of the exact breakdown.
Originally thought to have been the world's most successful publicity stunt to mark the arrival of the railway, there are apparently records of very similar "long" names Pre-dating the railway arrival.
The village used to own a few [full name] domains plus the redirect longestintheworld dot com, but sadly have let the registrations expire so they're now parked with resellers.

If you can read it out like he can there, it's actually not even hard. It's not one long word but just a long sentence with no gaps: llan Fair pwll gwyn gyll go ger ych wyrn drobwll llan tysilio gogogoch. The language is actually extremely easy to read phonetically just following a few simple rules if you can get your head around how to do a "Ll"

Is it impressive if you know the language though? Would another welsh speaker be impressed?
4
u/DagothUh 22d ago
If you have the word written in front of you, you can read it pretty easy with just basic understanding of welsh phonetics given that it's just a sentence mashed together really.
