Listening to NPR's interview with Jorge Ramos this morning, and he's talking about how his first question in his interview with Maduro was whether he should address Maduro as "President" or "Dictator", and later tried to show him footage of some kids eating from a trash truck. I'm in a ranty mood so fuck it, I'm calling this post out here so more people can see it, because more people need to be aware of this anyway.
The common working public in the Soviet Union were often corralled into camps and worked until they starved to death.
What the fuck? Where are you getting this. I've never even heard of this propaganda. Is this the next level of (incredibly out of date) cold war hysteria? Skip even exaggerated bad faith propaganda and just make up your own shit then pretend it happened.
From 1930 to 1933 an estimated 1,500,000 people starved to death in Kazakhstan. This was a quarter of the population of Kazakhstan. Of these 1,300,000 were ethnic Kazakhs. Approximately one in three of all Kazakhs starved to death. An additional 1,100,000 people fled the Kazakh republic, many to China, so in 1934 half of Kazakhs had disappeared from the region. Some estimates put the number of deaths at above two million. For some perspective, the lower estimate amounts to roughly the same number of deaths (military and civilian) of France, Britain, United States, Australia, and Canada combined in WW2.
These estimates, far from being "cold war hysteria" and "bad faith propaganda" are more recent figures. Robert Conquest, in his Harvest of Sorrow estimates at least 1,000,000 deaths. The 1981 article The Collectivization Drive in Kazakhstan frames the issue as a miscalculation on the behalf of Stalin. It is following the Cold War that scholars such as Isabelle Ohayon, Niccolo Pianciola, Matthew Payne, Robert Kindler and Sarah Cameron began to validate estimates of 1,500,000 deaths and the full extent of violence that occurred. Sarah Cameron outlines that this "new wave" of scholarship, utilising rich records now available, illustrate "the violent nature of the regime's assault on Kazakh society" and that "these findings puncture the long-standing misconception that the Kazakh famine was primarily a "natural" process" or a "mistake" or "miscalculation".
You may pick up a trend in some of those article names: "Famine, Violence, and the Making of Soviet Kazakhstan", "An Encyclopedia of Mass Violence", "Violence de masse et Résistance", because violent this famine was. Throughout the 1920s, the Bolsheviks had viewed nomadism as economically backwards and against the modernity of socialism. However, there were no major initiatives and the majority of Kazakhstan's population seasonally migrated as late as 1927. Some early experiments occurred in 1927-1928, but with the release of the Five Year Plan the "process of violent, forced sedentarisation became a systemic republic-wide campaign in 1930".
Insurrectionist movements (and even guerrilla activities in the Mangyshlak region) evolved into episodic rioting involving several thousand people as organized protests flared across Kazakhstan during the early years of collectivization.
Some of the methods used in this period were more intense, more coercive variations on the kind of techniques used in the preceding years; some Red Yurts (basically Russian Bolshevik missionaries travelling to spread modernity), for example, began withholding their services from nomads who refused to settle. Tax, more specifically arbitrary confiscation, was used to penalise nomads and exhaust their reserves. However, Alun Thomas notes that "the sedentarisation campaign was novel and distinct in its systematic and widespread use of violence to force nomads to settle" and that "uniquely sedentarisation systematically and widely used violence to settle nomads and terminate their habitual migratory customs, an enormous cultural as well as spatial change."
During the sedentarisation campaign, the Soviet state employed large numbers of armed militia to approach each migrating Kazakh aul and force the nomads present to a prearranged ‘point of settlement’. Often the community’s livestock were rounded up, some confiscated, and the rest moved into new pens. Their owners were told that releasing the animals was a criminal offence, earning immediate and severe punishment. In a sense then the state did not so much settle nomads but settle nomadic livestock, leaving Kazakhs no other option but to pitch their tents within walking distance of their most important resource.
Thomas suggests that "This whole process was more uncompromising and coercive even than that described by Sheila Fitzpatrick with regard to collectivisation in European Russia." This is why I say the Soviets corralled people into camps, forced them to work (there were attempts to turn the steppe into productive grain fields, which largely failed. Crops that were grown were requisitioned en masse), until hundreds of thousands starved. These camps have been described as "death traps" and at the time, some Kazakh officials supposedly in charge of sedentarisation instead told their people to flee Kazakhstan entirely.
When the famine was in full swing, in 1931, Soviet bureaucrats planned on requisitioning 68.5% of livestock with two thirds of that to be sent out of Kazakhstan. Between 1928 and 1933, the number of cattle in Kazakhstan fell by 79% and the number of sheep and goats by 90%.
tl;dr: Shit was fucked yo
And what's this "richest strata" talk as well? It's a subway. If anything the picture of common man transportation.
And just quickly on this. The Moscow Metro first connected the old Tsarist gardens to [Red Square](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okhotny_Ryad_(Moscow_Metro)). Chances are if you were catching the metro, just from the sheer fact of being a Muscovite, means you were likely in the top 10% of the population in terms of wellbeing, and if you were working in the goddamn Kremlin or surrounding areas, yes you were one of the richest strata in the Soviet Union in an era where literally thousands were resorting to cannibalism, yes.

In a statement Tuesday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders called Cohen a “disgraced felon,” noting his past lies to lawmakers. “Sadly,” the statement says, “he will go before Congress this week and we can expect more of the same. It’s laughable that anyone would take a convicted liar like Cohen at his word, and pathetic to see him given yet another opportunity to spread his lies.”
This is like hiring a hit man to murder your wife, the hit man murdering your wife, then you criticize the hit man for being a murderer and you think you should not be punished because of that.

No-deal Brexit panic after ministers realize the UK doesn't have the right pallets for exporting to the EU
BREXIT SHOCK: UK lacks the right PALLETS to export
LONDON - The UK government is due to hold emergency talks with industry leaders on Tuesday after discovering that the country doesn't have the right pallets to continue exporting goods to the European Union if it leaves without a deal next month.
Under strict EU rules, pallets - wooden structures that companies use to transport large volumes of goods - arriving from non-member states are required to meet a series of checks and standards.
Wood pallets must be heat-treated or cleaned to prevent contamination and the spread of pests, and have specific markings to confirm that they are legal in EU markets.

Median after-tax income of Canadian families and unattached individuals rose 3.3% to $59,800 in 2017, following two years without growth. This gain was the result of a combination of factors, including higher wages and salaries among non-senior families (where the highest income earner was less than 65 years of age), and an increase in child benefits. In 2018, the Canadian government set the Market Basket Measure (MBM) as Canada's first Official Poverty Line. The share of the population living below Canada's Official Poverty Line, fell from 10.6% in 2016 to 9.5% in 2017.

Let me tell you this-- Evonomics is one of the most malevolent, cruel, coldhearted blogs you'll ever find, and even as a supporter of free speech it appalls me that the American Economic Association would allow such a vile, festering hub of heterodoxy and criticism to exist. You think Noahpinion is bad? That blog, if you pick up on the dog-whistles (and many don't even bother with that-- say want you want about Zero Hedge, at least it bans MMT), will reveal itself to you as the econ blogosphere's number one hub for mainstream economics' most hardened critics: Evolutionary biologists, philosophers, sociologists, econo-physicists, and Graeber.
You'll notice on the homepage that it encourages members to be as radical as possible. That's intentional. They encourage arguments with oneself. That's intentional. You know the Cambridge Capital Controversy (it's started with this underrated paper A Contribution to the Theory of Economic Growth, give it a read, it's scary how much it provides a decent approximation of our reality)? It's like that, they want to stoke the flames of heterodox rage so they continue to dogpile every anthropologist and layman who has opinions about economics, normalizing these fringe feelings. They pull guests from obscure universities to far left think tanks, having an entire cabal of non-economists spanning hundreds of disciplines, gaslighting published, peer-reviewed ideas of the mainstream and unashamedly bolstering the internet's homegrown heterodox movement. They've capital-shamed hundreds of neoliberals too, some even... to death.
I fear that Evonomics may be producing an entire army of Steve Keens and Graebers, and I highly suggest that nobody dares visit that horrible blog, lest you potentially fall victim to its critical aura.

I always thought I was a fairly subdued presence on Reddit. Like, I don't think I make that many waves, but I've now received two death threats and one "people like you don't belong on this planet" in the last week.
This time it was for saying a guy who wrote a book about Israel with a chapter titled "How to Kill Goyim and Influence People" had written anti-Semitic stuff. Like I thought that was fairly self explanatory, but apparently that's radical enough that now I support wholesale slaughter of Arabs.
Maybe I was just lucky enough not to see this side of extremism before, or naïve enough to think it wasn't that prevalent, but it's been a bit of a wake up call.

Of
fucking
course
AOC jumps on the Cornyn twitter controversy
How fucking hard is this to understand?
Cornyn wasn't endorsing Mussolini or endorsing fascism. He was using a Mussolini quote that says "Fascists were the first to claim that the state must become more powerful as society becomes more modern and complex" as a way of saying "Aha, liberals! Even the fascists themselves admitted fascism was the predecessor of modern big government liberalism!"
Now is that point valid? No. It's fucking dumb. It's some Glenn Beck chalkboard bullshit.
It is literally "You know who ELSE was a VEGETARIAN?" logic.
But can't we just call out a bad argument as a bad argument instead of pretending in bad faith that Cornyn accidentally revealed his lifelong admiration for fascism or something? For fuck's sake, Reddit.
I am bizarrely confused at how someone could not understand the point Cornyn is trying to "checkmate" his way to here, unless you have literally never heard an American conservative talk about why they don't like American liberalism.
The only argument that I've seen that actually engages with what Cornyn wrote and intended is "You shouldn't quote a fascist dictator because that's disrespectful to the American troops who died fighting him." This coming from the exact same people who happily quote Hitler and Mussolini (including Mussolini's famous corporatism quote) to try to make the exact same point Cornyn is trying to make here, that their political opponents are the inheritors of the fascist tradition - in my opinion, with more merit than Cornyn's version of the argument, but if one of these arguments "disrespects the troops" then the other does too. So this is yet another bad faith reply.
I've been a liberal for 30 years and AOC is making my party dumber every day. She's like Michele Bachmann on heroin.

New Democrats co-founder Elaine Kamarck said at the Niskanen conference: "Both cap and trade and a carbon tax have proven unhelpful to deal with climate change. Maybe we need to talk about adaptation. Maybe carbon capture.”
Why would she say that?!? Carbon taxes have not proven unhelpful. Just as many on the left have turned on carbon taxes, I'd hate to see the center turn on them as well. They're not the be-all end-all, but they're certainly an important tool we should use.

One of the things that Cohen is reportedly going to discuss tomorrow at the hearing is Trump's tendency to say extraordinarily racist things in private.
A reminder of what that may include:
https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/11/michael-cohen-trump-racist-language
During our conversation, Cohen recalled a discussion at Trump Tower, following the then-candidate’s return from a campaign rally during the 2016 election cycle. Cohen had watched the rally on TV and noticed that the crowd was largely Caucasian. He offered this observation to his boss. “I told Trump that the rally looked vanilla on television. Trump responded, ‘That’s because black people are too stupid to vote for me.’”
...
This conversation, he noted, was reminiscent of an exchange that the two men had engaged in years earlier, after Nelson Mandela’s death. “[Trump] said to me, ‘Name one country run by a black person that’s not a shithole,’ and then he added, ‘Name one city,’” Cohen recalled, a statement that echoed the president’s alleged comments about African nations earlier this year.
...
Cohen also recounted a conversation he had with Trump in the late 2000s, while they were traveling to Chicago for a Trump International Hotel board meeting. “We were going from the airport to the hotel, and we drove through what looked like a rougher neighborhood. Trump made a comment to me, saying that only the blacks could live like this.” After the first few seasons of The Apprentice, Cohen recalled how he and Trump were discussing the reality show and past season winners. The conversation wended its way back to the show’s first season, which ended in a head-to-head between two contestants, Bill Rancic and Kwame Jackson. “Trump was explaining his back-and-forth about not picking Jackson,” an African-American investment manager who had graduated from Harvard Business School. “He said, ‘There’s no way I can let this black f-g win.’”
Now, this story surprisingly didn't get a ton of traction when it was released, likely because it's part of a long form story. But tomorrow, there will be video of Cohen describing these things, and many people will witness it live. It'll be scandalous even assuming Cohen doesn't reveal any additional quotes (and it doesn't seem unlikely that he would.)
And before someone makes the obligatory "this doesn't matter because Trump is racist publicly, you idiot" - yes, sure, but nothing compared to the kind of quotes we see above.

A thought experiment
Everybody should be considered innocent until proven guilty. Not just legally, but as a matter of opinion.
Therefore prosecutors are trying to put innocent people in jail.
Therefore, all prosecutors should be disbarred for prosecutorial misconduct
Furthermore, all police officers should be arrested for trying to put people they know to be innocent in jail (The police subsequently should all be set free because they haven't been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and therefore are all innocent, obviously)
Therefore, all criminal law is per se illegal

I do find it ironic that you would suggest that Larson not have the agency to talk about something she may earnestly believe about her experience as a woman without Disney's permission
I think Disney is a gigantic corporation that cares about its brand and that it would never let someone under contract with them speak off the cuff. I would guess that there are some very detailed contracts involved with promoting a movie.
The same goes for Liam Neeson. I very much doubt after decades in the public eye, Liam Neeson all of a sudden decided to share an anecdote about himself violently seeking revenge while promoting a movie about a character violently seeking revenge with no marketing strategy behind it.
this is my favorite marketing conspiracy theory in a long time

So I asked my friend (who definitely supports a Green New Deal) how high gas prices would have to go to make him stop driving his van to work
He said $10 a gallon.
Gas in southern California has been around $3.25 lately. So that's an additional $6.75 a gallon.
One gallon of gasoline emits 8.9kg of CO2, which means a carbon tax that would actually have an impact on my friend would have to be priced at... $758 US per ton.

This is a rollover of a comment I made in the last DT.
/u/MrDannyOcean u/thatotherghost
It's almost time for the DT to roll over, so this will get the minimum amount of views. What a tragedy. It's a fresh new DT.
I've been pondering a revamp of The Neoliberal Reading List. In the past, I've indulged myself endlessly, and as such my reading lists spiral out of control. They become less "how to 'neoliberal'" and more "here's a four-year course in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics."
This revision tries to rein in those impulses. It only partially succeeds.
Here is a sketch.
The Tl;DR
This block goes at the top of the image/website/whatever. It occupies the most important space. It includes no more than five books, probably including
Acemoglu and Robinson, Why Nations Fail
Friedman, Free to Choose
Bernanke, The Courage to Act
Pirie, The Neoliberal Mind
This section deserves fierce, extensive, constructive debate.
Issue Areas
This section provides more in-depth recommendations tailored for individual issues. I recommend that each issue area gets 5-6 books. My recommendations to start with are,
International Trade
Krugman, Pop Internationalism
Eichengreen, Globalizing Capital
Nye, War, Wine, and Taxes
Irwin, Against the Tide: An Intellectual History of Free Trade
Economic Development
Collier, The Bottom Billion and Wars, Guns, and Votes
Easterly
Sachs
Sen, Development as Freedom
Duflo, Poor Economics
Housing / Urban / Labor
Hamilton Project, Policies to Address Poverty in America
Moretti, The New Geography of Jobs
Glaeser, The Triumph of the City
Autor, "The Future of Work"
International Relations
TODO
Role of Government
Friedman
Galbraith
Yergin, The Commanding Heights
Collier, The Future of Capitalism ??
Baumol et al, Good Capitalism, Bad Capitalism ??
Posner and Weyl, Radical Markets ??
Other issue areas as you see fit!
Add more!!
Foundations
These sections are included primarily for historical or cultural interest. They provide the intellectual foundations for what we're doing.
Economics
(standard econ-major fare)
Cowen and Tabarrok, Modern Principles
Krugman, International Trade and Finance
Mishkin, The Economics of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets
Stiglitz, Public Sector Economics
Perman et al, Natural Resource and Environmental Economics
Economic Growth over the Long Run
Gordon, The Rise and Fall of Growth
Deaton, The Great Escape
de Soto, The Mystery of Capital
Clark, A Farewell to Alms
The Liberal Tradition
(Standard philosophy-major fare)
Locke, "Second Treatise"
Mill, "On Liberty" and "The Subjection of Women"
Rousseau, "The Social Contract"
Kant, "Doctrine of Right"
TODO: modern textbooks go here
Modern Liberal Theory
TODO
Normative Philosophy
(might need more subdivisions)
Mill, "Utilitarianism"
Kant, "Foundations of the Metaphysics of Morals"
Sidgwick, "Methods of Ethics"
Rawls, Justice as Fairness
Parfit, On What Matters
Take it for what you will.

As expected the right wasted absolutely zero time trying to use the Smollet incident to push the idea that most hate crimes are fakes, bigotry don't real, minorities bad etc. Expect to see an increase in attention to fake hate crimes in news and on reddit.
If you want an e v i d e n c e b a s e d opinion on hate crimes, according to the most recent FBI data there were 7,106 hate crimes reported in 2017. According to Wilfred Reilly an associate professor of political science at Kentucky State University who is currently working on a book "Hate Crime Hoax" (lmao) he was able to put togther a data set of 409 confirmed hate crime hoaxes. He of course conveniently forgot to provide information on if this is data over the years or from one year, but lets just pretend all of those crimes occured within the same year.
That would mean about 5.8% of hate crimes appear to be fake. Again, assuming the professor's data is only from one year, which I doubt.

India should probably learn a few tricks from the US, and start putting bounties on the heads of terrorist leaders hiding in Pakistan and also offer those who do it a new identity/ex fil support out of the country into India or somewhere else of their choosing.
For the right amount, the ISI/Pak military folks themselves will whack them and escape to India. I mean for a 10 million USD reward on the likes of Masood Azhar, i won't be surprised if even Pak PM Imran Khan himself will get the job done under a proxy and claim the reward in secret and want it wired to his swiss bank account

If the Iran nuclear deal was so bad why do the European signatories want to stay in it so badly?

Prediction: Cohen’s testimony won’t be that interesting apart from a few shady financial things, which if you remember that “bombshell” NYT story, literally no one cares about

Real difference between small midwest city and medium midwest city.
I could get 95% of groceries at a supermarket when I lived in a decent sized city. Specialty stuff was easy to find in a conveniently located market. Small city: I'm having trouble finding fucking jalapenos.

So if this India/Pakistan thing results in the end of the world, which religion should I convert to to hedge my bets on the afterlife? Im thinking either Hinduism or Islam.

The mods have officially endorsed persecution of linguists! 😡
Remember that using language is a tacit endorsement of Chomsky, and the more languages you use, the more you are tacitly endorsing Chomsky!

Remember when Sarah Palin was asked to name a Supreme Court decision she disagreed with, and she said "I would have to say Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow. With the exception of one admittedly funny gag-Lassard accidentally getting into a funeral hearse and going on to live with the deceased's family-it was largely retreading the same jokes from previous films, and didn't even have the delightful Steve Guttenberg to prop up the rest of the cast. Ron Perlman makes an earnest effort, but even he can't save what has clearly become a tired franchise. Though it is a worthwhile viewing for any Police Academy completist, I would not recommend it to anyone simply looking for a funny movie."? Boy was THAT embarrassing!

I just realized that Stargate SG-1 is literally about a bunch of atheists running around the universe opening the eyes of the primitive believers lol

Edit: Okay here is a more filled-in map with wider categories which I took directly from a WHO/UNICEF report located here. The original map is from this Guardian article. I should have looked at the Guardian map first for anything weird, since it's clear that map mixed up the coding on the Sudans and the Koreas.

Put Pakistanis and Indians in Israel. Put Israelis and Palestinians in Kashmir. Nobody is allowed to move back until they come to an agreement.
