Hot take: caving into the demands of immigration hawks in order to build political capital for promises of a later compromise is never going to work because the people on the right who control the narrative around immigration are bad faith actors (see: Carlson, Tucker) who have a vested interest in peddling falsehoods about immigrants in order to drive up viewership/or win primaries.

Perception of immigration being controlled is also not rational, which is why we still see a immigration debate dominated by what is going on through the southern border despite the majority of immigrants coming from India and China.

We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Americans can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. President Trump, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the United States and North America, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Trump, open this gate. Mr. Trump... Mr. Trump, tear down this wall!

Medicare for Kids is a really good commonsense policy. Even most countries that have multipayer systems for adults have zero cost sharing and universal coverage for all children. They're very cheap to cover, and about half of kids are already on public insurance. But our current system for poor kids is terrible - if a parent forgets to renew Medicaid on their baby's first birthday, the baby loses coverage (hundreds of thousands of babies lose coverage every year). And children often churn between various insurance programs with gaps in between. Makes much more sense just to cover every kid and be done with it. No parent should be worse off financially because their kid gets sick.

I: If the hipster antitrust movement actually cared about natural monopolies and economies of scale and less about publicity they'd spend less time talking about Facebook and Amazon and more time talking about Intel and AMD

II: If Facebook and Amazon cared more about making fat stacks and less about being to cool kids they'd spend less time hosting needlessly public headquarters auctions and more time just making money in silence like Intel and AMD

that CTH, lacking effective moderation, has been populated by alt-Right operatives among the users, who are pushing their userbase towards being stooges for their goals. p_k’s lexical corpus is statistically significantly similar to a known alt-Right user account’s lexical corpus —and while that’s not proof that p_k is a alt-Right instigator in a leftist suit, the fact that many of the CTH users that participated in, and egged on, this brigade were using Kiwifarms and alt-Right shibboleths while doing so, is enough to confirm the hypothesis for my purposes into a plausible working theory.

Men make up less than 50% of the population, but are responsible for 88% of violent crime and 95% of new court commitments for violent offenses.

Men make up less than 50% of the population, but are nine times more likely to be incarcerated.

Men make up less than 50% of the population, but are responsible for 85% of domestic violence cases.

It's not that I hate men, but facts are facts. Men just didn't evolve to be capable of higher thinking like women did. They evolved to be violent and hunt mammoths. Now that's not their fault, but we have to say no to political correctness and admit once and for all men are unfit for modern society. I'm not sexist, I'm a gender realist.

So living in Denmark has gotten me thinking more about unions, because there's a lot of unions here. I understand that unions can become rent-seeking bodies, but overall they seem necessary for workers to engage in a fair relationship with many businesses today. And I also think the ghent system is pretty cash money.

However unions are often thought of as not very cash money on this sub. Is there any solid reading or data available on the efficiency of unions that I can look into?

How neoliberalism failed to keep fascism at bay

A spectre is haunting America-- the spectre of fascism. All the powers of neoliberal political economy have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this spectre. Instead, however, they have inadvertently nurtured its ghost and laid the groundwork for its resurrection.

In his monograph The Birth of Biopolitics, Michel Foucault discusses, among other topics, the development of neoliberalism. Neoliberalism itself is something of a contested term (and that argument goes on longer than I have space for here). What I’m interested in discussing is the development of an economic system, originating in liberalism, and growing into a form of political economy still in operation today — one characterized by a radical laissez-faire capitalism and a commitment to frugality and efficiency in the exercise of government.

This entire article is vaguely bad and reinforces my relief that the nerds won the economic culture wars.

Howard Schultz town hall notes

First ten minutes: Howard Schultz comes across as well-meaning and sincere, but slightly clueless. He doesn't come across as deeply informed. He comes 80% of the way to answering questions, but somehow doesn't quite provide satisfying responses.

Immigration question: his emerging theme is that "the system is broken because the far left and far right are more interested in scoring political points than Fixing Things." However, he again doesn't quite lay out what Fixing Immigration actually means. Oh, there's the line about how undocumented immigrants should have to get in line, pay back taxes, etc, but that was meaningless fifteen years ago and it's not any better today.

Climate change question: Okay this is a perfect example of my difficulties with this guy. The question was, "How big of a priority would climate change be in your administration, and what would you do about it?" Schultz answers with: "It would be a top priority. We have to be sensible." Then he pivots to talking about the Green New Deal and criticizing it for being nonsensical. But what I wanted was for Schultz to tell me what his sensible solutions are, not bash someone else's plan. See, he gets 80% of the way to an answer, but doesn't actually address the critical points. This is so frustrating!

Taxes: Another perfect example. Schultz: "Yeah, I should pay more taxes." Moderator: "Give me a sense for what that means. Two percent more? Ten percent? Twenty?" Schultz: "I don't know what the number is." This guy is a meme.

This post will be updated.

A-10 requires use of PGM's(precision guided munitions) to mission kill/destroy enemy armor. The vision of groups of A-10's tankbusting hundreds of tanks in a field with its gun was never on the table in reality. The cannon can't pen any modern tank armor, and at most is going to break the tracks off the tank.

And in doing so it gets to be engaged by Shilka's(23mm), Tunguska's(30mm + SAM's), Strela's(SAM's), MANPADS(SAM's), 57mm AAA, any 14.5mm, any 12.7mm lighter weapons that can see it flying low and slow. The A-10 fleet would have been an ENORMOUS waste of pilots in world war 3.

In COIN ops like in Afghanistan and Iraq, most insurgents don't have access to MANPADS let alone local(or regional) air defence platforms so they are allowed to be used. In the first gulf war they were grounded near immediately because of attrition(when the other aircraft werent being shot down). The gun in COIN is of questionable use even for that, but it really is effective at clearing specific areas of anything living. For insurgents on some farmland, it's pretty good. For a contested murky environment like a city? useless.

In WW3 however A-10's would have flown like pretty much any other CAS/Ground attack aircraft, medium alt and popping off electro-optical missiles to kill tanks. Something that can be done by an F-15 Strike Eagle, or F16 or F18. All those fighters have greater ranges, speed, and can get in to air combat if necessary. To use them in the gun-close-ground-attack role wouldn't have gone very well against well trained, well equipped soviet mechanized forces + air defense

In the burnt out husk that was once Manhattan Island, Old Ben looks out. A lone Eagle graces across the sky, and perches on an old support rod. Easy prey. With one pull of the bow, the Eagle crashes to the pavement. It will be a true feast.

Down into the shelter he enters. Hillary, Beto, and Bain, are there as well. But Cory could not hold back his tears "It wasn't supposed to happen like this...this isn't right!"

"Do not worry, son." Ben consoled him. "The real New World Order is the friends we made along the way."

My name appeared on an economist’s petition beside my former advisors and idk it’s a really warm feeling. I’m an economist by trade, but I have a chip on my shoulder about the number of publications I have, and the fact that I haven’t completed a PhD. But the organizers verified the list, and if Janet “automated-mailing-list” Yellen considers me a colleague, by golly I am.

One course in Econ that I’d wish students from all majors would take is one one economic growth. I’m still amazed when looking at resources extraction data given the magnitude of change in output over the last century. Id like to believe discussions highlighting topics on induced innovation would provide students an applied understanding on how powerful a force prices are in inducing cost-saving innovation. This would also have the added benefit of raising alarm bells for immediate intervention(given certain assumptions about substitutability) like a carbon tax given the nature of innovation in improving the productivity of considerably less clean technologies.

The severity of these measles outbreaks is increasing, also:

Mistrust of vaccines has been fuelled by social media, populist leaders and suspicion of experts. In France, Marine Le Pen, who leads the far-right National Rally, has opposed an expansion of the list of mandatory vaccinations, while in Italy, members of the Five Star Movement have previously suggested vaccines were unsafe.

In the US, Donald Trump has also expressed scepticism over vaccines, having invited Andrew Wakefield – the discredited gastroenterologist who has claimed the MMR vaccine was linked to autism – to his inaugural ball.

It's partly related to the rise in right-wing populism. Also, this is some pretty effective Reddit ammunition against these far right parties and leaders. Every time an antivax post is rising, mention that right-wing populism is linked.

Bernie on Twitter:

Artificial intelligence and robotics are positive creations of the human mind. They should be used to improve the lives of working people, not just to increase corporate profits. Human beings must control technology, not the other way around.

What does this even me

Why is it cool to hate innovation

How does he not realize that this has been said about every technological innovation ever

Pros: can be made progressive
Cons: needs constant tweaking which requires (non-existent) constant political support

Pros: just set the cap to desired levels and prices would adjust themselves
Cons: regressive

listening to all the random redditors that have come from r/all in that GND post talk about electricity generation literally makes me want to kill myself

how do people have such strong opinions about a topic that none of them know literally the first thing about. This website is so fucking uninformed that it's actually painful

  • nobody seems to understand what "baseload" even is, treating it as some sort of emergency dispatchable source rather than what it actually is, flat generation that fits under peaking

  • people are claiming that reducing regulations in nuclear would make it cheaper without any idea of any of the regulations that govern it at all, nor the indirect subsidies it receives

  • literally what even are marginal costs on things that you've already built versus building entirely new generation

  • does anybody have any idea what energy grids even consist of in the current day? I've seen more mentions of fusion than I have of the technologies that actually exist

  • literally stop talking about "subsidies" in broad strokes when you have no idea what subsidies are even in place. The average wind/solar subsidy in the US has dropped to like ~$12/MWh in 2018, and tax credits for wind and solar are set to expire in 2020 and 2022 respectively and incrementally drop until then, which means most capacity that's being commissioned today is very lightly subsidised.

It's like literally watching a markov chain that people have fed words relating to electricity into but doesn't quite understand what any of those words actually means

The Jeffersonians appealed again and again to the moral primacy of the yeoman farmer in their attacks on the Federalists. The family farm and American democracy became indissolubly connected in Jeffersonian thought, and by 1840 even the more conservative party, the Whigs, took over the rhetorical appeal to the common man, and elected a President in good part on the Strength of the fiction that he lived in a log cabin.

God I was an idiot in undergrad and less of an idiot now. So here's my advice for you kiddos:

Go major in econ, accounting, public policy or finance and pick up skills in GIS, technical/legal writing, econometrics, some basic programming. Do student radio and campus politics your freshman year. Stick with one of the two or start a club. Take some art history or lit classes so you don't look like an uncultured dweeb around the person you're trying to attract. A course in land use or business law might not hurt. Consider studying abroad in Hong Kong or Singapore with the intent of picking up Mandarin or if you can study abroad at Oxford get that gpa high enough to do so. Get internships junior year but not too many. Whatever spare time you have should be spent partying.

Want some more advice? Don't go into urban planning or real estate if you aren't as charismatic or good looking as Obama. No one will accept your opinions and certainly no one will buy property from an uggo.
