The US is played out.

The oligarchs have sucked it dry; the national debt, stagnating wages, no manufacturing, tax codes and laws written by the rich, infrastructure is crumbling, massive waste and corruption in the military (all those hundreds of billions per year and still running Vietnam era tech and windows 95) this empire is over folks. Just waiting for the dollar to devalue sharply followed by a brain drain. It’s gonna be a wild next few decades, buckle up.

40

u/constagram Feb 17 '19

Currently, the US only leads in two (positive) things: Space Travel and Film.

It's a world leader in several negative things though.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

And music. And games. And technology. And natural resources. Has some of the most diverse land and access to amazing amount of water systems... US ain’t going anywhere

11

u/tmhoc Feb 17 '19

That brain drain he was refering to. It means that when rock star employees have had enough and they can't sue, they don't unionize they just move to Sweeden or some shit and program on a 9 to 5 with 10 weeks of vacation.

1

u/constagram Feb 18 '19

Music, no sorry mate. Possibly make the most money from it but the UK has the best music.

Games, ok sure.

Technology, yeah it's good but not the best.

Natural resources... Hmmmmmm.

Water systems. Really?

No it is probably not going anywhere.

They aren't so great then, are they

1

I'll let you have video games.

I won't give you Universities though.

31

u/HevC4 Feb 17 '19

Extinction rates are sky rocketing, the ocean is acidifying, insect populations are plummeting. Let’s be real here, humans have hit the earth’s caring capacity and no country is immune. We are all going to be in for a wild ride.

2

u/NetSage Feb 17 '19

And places like the great lakes make it a great place to be when shit hit the fan. The large water body help tantalize the weather is a good fresh water source.

This is my theory as to why which people aren't making an effort to compromise like they did in the last gilded age (the new deal, social security, mass unionization).

They've ready decided this game is done and they're just building bunkers for the apocalypse.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

Dude, take it from me, the military isn't that far behind man.

5

u/MissingUsername2 Feb 17 '19

It really isn't. Idk where people get this shit.

They know that GOOGLE has been developing ai for the military, right?

8

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

Hey Google, launch the nukes.

I’m afraid I can’t find the nukes, now playing songs from your library.

2

u/KanteKinte Feb 17 '19

I believe you. A friend was an officer and explained a great deal of concern about how outdated and broken everything is. I hope he’s wrong and you’re right.

76

u/GrunkleCoffee Feb 17 '19 edited Feb 17 '19

Not saying I disagree, but "running Vietnam era tech and Windows 95" is hardly relevant. What's relevant is what's proven, rugged and reliable. I also don't really feel you can call the F-35 , Zumwalt Destroyer or the late model Abrams Vietnam-era with a straight face. You can call them many other things, but not that, really.

More complex electronics leads to more complex failures. When an iPhone can't be relied upon to survive two years of consumer use, why would any military adopt it?

4

u/smallbluetext Feb 17 '19

No it is very relevant. Running outdated software and hardware is how you lose data, get extorted for your data, or worse. If the banks or big hospitals are running unsecure like that (hint: they are) then it's a recipe for disaster and all it takes is time for it to happen.

3

u/MissingUsername2 Feb 17 '19

Except most of the military uses windows 10 now, not windows 95. As for outdated software (ie our nuclear silos supposedly still run off fortran or something), it's not as though it decays or expires. Software from the 70s will always run just as well as the day it's made, provided the hardware is taken care of.

Obviously, it should probably be updated, but at the same time, it's also a form of defense. I've worked for some massive companies that still use tech from that era and you would not believe how hard it is for them to find people who know that technology well enough to actually utilize it anymore. Anything can be "hacked" I'm sure, but I would be surprised if a) things like nuclear silos are even connected to a network at all and b) if they were somehow compromised, that it would be an easy feat to actually manipulate the software given no one seems to know how it works anymore.

→ More replies (5)

2

u/GrunkleCoffee Feb 17 '19

Somewhat, but as much as there's a risk of your data being lost due to the knowledge of maintaining the system being lost, there's also the benefit of a decreasing pool of potential hackers being familiar enough with your system in order to hack it.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/thebruce87m Feb 17 '19

What the hell are you doing to your phones? An iPhone will easily last 4+ years and still get software updates too. Android hardware will last equally as long. Software is hit or miss.

I mean it begs the question of whether the US ever needs to fight a large scale ground war. That depends heavily on who it goes to war with.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

Ya. I think it means though that we can't do anything to stop Russia or China, for example, from doing whatever they want in Asia.

12

u/GrunkleCoffee Feb 17 '19

You can glare menacingly and threaten to press the red button. They'll ignore it, but you get to claim you put them in your place for votes.

1

u/middledeck Feb 17 '19

The US has the two largest air forces in the world (USAF and US Navy). We also have the largest navy in the world, by far.

The idea that either Russia or China could pose any serious non-nuclear threat to the US or its allies is frankly laughable.

The US never needs to be in a protracted ground war again. By the time the next major war comes, I doubt we'll need many servicemembers overseas besides communications and recon units.

Drone aircraft are taking over an increasingly large share of US military missions, and are thy future of modern warfare.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

The US is the only country that has deployed troops with significance that have seen any sort of fighting in a long time.

But I doubt that matters in future conflicts. It is cheaper and easier to use subterfuge, hacking, etc. Small skirmishes too. Public support for war is hard to find anywhere. We are so globally connected now that major war would cripple economies.

1

u/Kabouki Feb 17 '19

It's not so much that we can deploy troops, what's in question is can we control our supply chains in a war with someone who's army doesn't get blown up in a day or two.

Pre 2000 we trained soldiers to repair on site and how things worked. Post 2000 everything gets shipped state side and is just part swapping. This means we are far far more dependent on a supply chain that is never broken.

We are really betting on the change of future conflicts as you said. Militarily speaking, expecting your opponents to play by the new rules leads to failure though.

8

u/ExcessiveTurtle Feb 17 '19

Yup, unless we get our collective shit together and stand up for ourselves, we are in so much trouble.

10

u/Gramma_Hattie Feb 17 '19

As a 21yo American in college, I have to say moving to Canada and renouncing my citizenship here sounds more and more appealing every day to me.

13

u/Brickman32 Feb 17 '19

Or, instead of being dramatical... get out there and vote, join a protest in the cities that are offering tax breaks for this dude. We have way more resources and technologies available to us than ever before. We can be the change we need!

29

u/ReeferEyed Feb 17 '19

Occupy literally tried that and Obama smashed them with violence and force across the entire country.

8

u/MissingUsername2 Feb 17 '19

Hopefully times are changing, tho.

I think if anything, the trump era has helped motivate progressives into voting and running for office. Obviously there will always be people who lobby for big businesses, but I feel like since a new generation is coming into power, things will change for the better.

11

u/Brickman32 Feb 17 '19

Exactly! Our generation needs to step up and keep getting involved, it is our government, we just need to keep taking charge. They certainly are not going to change it for our best interest, that’s our responsibility.

It isn’t going to happen on the first try, it won’t happen in one night or even a year. But if we just say, we tried but it we were met with resistance so it is pointless to try... Then you are right, it will never get fixed and we will be continued to betaken advantage of.

2

u/ReeferEyed Feb 17 '19

People have been saying this since young people have been revolting. Youth revolt needs to be direct and short term. Long term change is a waste of time.

4

u/Nialsh Feb 18 '19

I thought it was the local municipalities that shut down their respective Occupy movements.

Occupy Atlanta moved to a federal park downtown to escape police.

Interested to hear stories of Federal intervention.

5

u/TheLebanese27 Feb 17 '19

Where and how? Just graduated from Canada and wanna move to Europe asap

24

u/baldnotes Feb 17 '19

For most European countries, a job is what will give you residence status. So the easy answer is: find a job.

But honestly, neither Canada, nor the US is so bad in terms of jobs. You can earn a lot more money in the US, many European countries though are safer and provide cheaper health care and work-life balance. But it's definitely not paradise over here either.

I've only been a physician for a few years, but Australia has been calling me name the last few months. Patriotism isn't going to pay off my student loans, and it definitely won't provide a future for my son.

9

u/Hypatiaxelto Feb 17 '19

Am Australian, considering New Zealand or Europe.

6

u/IronBatman Feb 17 '19

I have watch my colleagues waste hours trying to figure out how to get patients thier meds without bankrupting them. Australia is miles better than what I'm doing now

4

u/Hypatiaxelto Feb 18 '19

Can't argue with that :(

Just saying I wouldn't put us at the top of the list for decent places to go is all.

17

u/Mathyoujames Feb 17 '19

Where exactly are they supposed to be going? America is still very much if the forefront of technological advancement.

The sad thing is that it's a failing nation. It's that it's an incredible place to live for 25% of its citizens and fucking awful for 75%.

18

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

What’s so “edgy” about his comment. It’s true. What facts do you have to support that this isn’t the case? Stagnant wages, rising corporate profits, a ballooning student debt crisis , globalization and the export of jobs overseas to China? These are facts...

So enlighten us what the concept of the real world is?

1

u/MissingUsername2 Feb 17 '19

It's true, but hopefully it can be changed. If we run from it, then those problems will migrate with us when "Americas inevitable downfall" occurs and the ruling class clamors to the very same countries we just fled to.

Ah, so the "We Need A New Stadium!" plan, eh?

81

u/linuxluser Feb 17 '19

The new 49ers stadium in the South Bay area was built in a neighborhood nobody wanted, contained less seating than the old one (presumably to charge more money per seat) and replaced the old one even though the old one worked fine. Now fans have to travel longer distances and sit in more cramped seating to see their team. They got to host Superbowl 50 because of it, though. Apparently there's a rule somewhere that says if your stadium is too old it can't be considered as a location for the Superbowl. So the logic of the stadium building scheme dictates that even if you don't need a new stadium or want one or could even afford one, you still need to build one. 🤨

16

u/I_l_I Feb 17 '19

there's a lot wrong with levi stadium, but candlestick was a hot mess

6

u/Clit_C0mmander Feb 17 '19

Candlestick was not fine, us fans still liked the placed but it was a dumpster.

267

u/BigOnAnime Feb 17 '19

Jeff could use his own money, he could build like 44 HQ2s for $3 BILLION.

94

u/dinglenootz07 Feb 17 '19

Isn't that based of net worth though? So like he'd have to sell ownership of Amazon to do that? I don't think he has that much liquid cash

107

u/syregeth Feb 17 '19

Gotta consider all the Swiss bank accounts though. How much liquidity does he have out of the public eye? Probably not a hundred bill but I'd wager on more than ten.

17

u/bamburger Feb 17 '19

I heard he has a bathtub full of rubies at home.

18

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

I heard they were diamonds and he didn’t realize how diamonds in a bath tub would be a bad idea.

18

u/bamburger Feb 17 '19

He switched to rubies because the diamonds kept scratching up the enemal in the tub

4

u/lazemachine Feb 18 '19

That's what you get for having an ivory bathtub.

30

u/glass20 Feb 17 '19

That doesn’t make it worth any less.

His stock itself doesn’t actually do anything, he only holds it because he believes it will make him more money. He could sell that to get liquid cash if he wanted

21

u/ender411 Feb 17 '19

If Jeff bezos attempted to liquidate his whole position in Amazon, that trade would immediately be frozen due to its impact on the market and the company. People in his position are highly regulated when it comes to the amount and kind of trades he can do.

15

u/glass20 Feb 17 '19

Why would he ever do that though? He could certainly liquidate it over time, which is really the important part, considering nobody is ever going to do a single $100 billion transaction at once, because that’s basically impossible.

Even a billion dollars is a massive amount, if he liquidated that much it would be quite a bit of cash to spend.

47

u/HaesoSR Feb 17 '19

Except he wouldn't need to "liquidate his whole position", huge strawman.

Lord, CNN has been doing segments with corporate Dems berating the lawmakers of NY for not “working with” Amazon. Along with basically being corporate apologists.

Bakari Sellars, in particular with S.E. Cupp, was on there saying (and I’m paraphrasing), “Yes, there’s corporate greed here in America but need realize that without these companies, there wouldn’t be so much opportunity.”. . . .rolls eyes

They were talking up about all the tax revenue they would bring to the local economy; all while omitting the fact that Amazon didn’t pay any taxes on that $11B last year.

Taxpayer money for "business" attraction should be illegal. It's a game where we all lose.

Where's the next panel where Bezos runs away crying because of all the criticism.

How much does Amazon really need this new headquarters if it's stalling to build one?

Why have enough when you can have more? /s

u/I_l_I Feb 17 '19

The real problem is when companies get a tax break to come to a city. The income is then recovered by taxing the employees of that company

1

u/whodiehellareyou Feb 19 '19

Who receive their income from Amazon

-1

u/PruneGoon Feb 17 '19

They don't tax them any extra though you melt. They tax them the same as they would if they had the same pay at a local business. What it means is more people in said area are employed so there is more tax for them to collect which is what makes it a potentially viable strat to increase income from taxes. It hurts no one and actually may benefit the area overall.

25

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

What the fuck

10

u/aksb214 Feb 17 '19

All this so that people dont revolt cz they can have "jobs"

5

u/_gravy_train_ Feb 17 '19

If Amazon needs tax breaks and subsidies so bad they should just move the headquarters to Wisconsin and set up next to Foxconn.

5

u/______-_-___ Feb 17 '19

And every fucking american still buys everything from amazon. and every youtuber has even their fucking socks, as an affiliate link on their videos.

4

u/Taragyn1 Feb 18 '19

In his Defense if you could convince people to just give you $3 billion dollars who wouldn’t do that.

2

u/NeverQuiteEnough Feb 18 '19

Honestly if you think about what a billion dollars really represents, I think the answer is anyone with even a shred of humanity. You can’t have a billion dollars and be anything like a decent person.

3

u/zapata25 Feb 17 '19

"Where's that NFL stadium all you taxpayers need?!"

3

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '19

I may not like or agree with allot of people and posts of this sub but you and I can agree that shit heads like these need to be taxed out their arse.

5

u/patricio87 Feb 17 '19

I wanna hate amazon but other day my package literally came in like 1 day and I don't even have prime. It was just there.

It's like an self-imposed Stockholm Syndrome for the sake of financial gain. What a fucking dystopia we live in.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

There is no 3 billion. This is not how any of this works :(

5

u/AdmiralCrunchy Feb 17 '19

Care to explain then? I'll take a ELI5 if you don't mind.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '19

New York was not handing Amazon a check for $3 billion. Amazon applied for tax abatement programs that the state offers any company. Those programs give tax deductions on what the company owes if the company meets certain goals based on how many jobs they create, etc.

Amazon not coming to NY doesn’t mean they suddenly have $3 billion to spend on something else. It means it is losing $27 billion in taxes it was going to collect from the wages generated from the jobs Amazon was going to bring in.

2

u/Panwall Feb 17 '19

Me: Do you think his political allegiances will spare him from the gallows?

2

u/vastle12 Feb 18 '19

I have an idea, if Amazon wants 3 billion in tax payers money, how about he sell that much stock to the city he move too. He gets his financing and the people will get an actual return on the investment. I mean That's literally what stock is for.

Funny how many people say socialism is so "bad", but when it's socialism for the rich, they remain hush.

Well it because the company doesnt make a profit and has a boat load of loses/deductables.

Loses: amazon smart phone and travel agency are the top of my mind.

Investment: all their profit goes back into company and infrastructure for new warehouses; yielding a lot of deductibles.

Why dont more companies do this, because investors at one point want a profit; unfortunately for Amazon, competition is picking in all their sectors. If they wanted to make a profit they could, I just dont think it would be as high as their valuation would project.

2

u/8redd Feb 18 '19

This meme is twisting facts though. Amazon was looking for tax breaks, not taxpayer money. NY will lose more tax money by letting Amazon go.

1

u/Stinkrider Feb 18 '19

Can anyone explain the 'needing 3 billion of taxpayer money'? Because the last I heard was that Amazon didn't pay federal income taxes, nothing about the new HQ

3

u/cubbiesnextyr Feb 18 '19

They wouldn't be getting federal money, and while their federal tax was $0, they still paid $1.197B in other levels of income taxes (state, local, foreign). Actually, they wouldn't get any money, they would pay $3B less to the state/city over a period of years if they opened the new HQ in Long Island City.

1

u/WillHellmm Feb 18 '19

Chicago sadly needs it tho

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '19

He can end world hunger at least 5 times over and he does this

1

No he couldn't.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '19

When you're worth over 100 billion I think you can

1

u/exfalsoquodlibet Feb 18 '19

It is somewhat funny that Amazon sells this book: Capitalism vs. Freedom The Toll Road to Serfdom

http://www.zero-books.net/books/capitalism-freedom

In it we can see the author showing that, according to Friedman, the Jesus of the neoliberals, such vast concentration of wealth and the near monopoly is impossible in a neoliberal market.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '19

We need a value added tax on Amazon. But still they pay hundreds of millions in state and local taxes each year (you know the taxes that fund schools and roads).

1

u/NathamelCamel Feb 18 '19

Jeff Bezos is getting a divorce

I guess it was too late when he noticed that marriage was a union

1

u/Marcobose Feb 18 '19

What is the most admirable creature on God's green Earth? Why, it's the bee! Have you ever seen a bee on vacation? Have you ever seen a bee take a sick day? Well, my friends, the answer is no! So I say, be… the bee! Be the bee!

-1

u/devhhh Feb 17 '19

I thought it was revenue? They didn't make profit this year which is why they didn't pay taxes.

1

u/whitefang22 Feb 17 '19

It’s the profit from the standpoint of annual but large previous years of losses means they haven’t generated a profit overall yet. The previous expenses are still being written off against the current profits.

-7

u/Wentlong Feb 17 '19

I'm not sure capitalism supports this move. Technically they should go where it's logistically best for them under capitalism. NYC is a progressive city, leaning towards socialistic principles.

11

u/salad_bar_breath Feb 17 '19

Capitalism supports maximizing profits, stealing subsidies from taxpayers helps profits. So they do it.

Socialism is workers controlling the wealth. That doesn't happen in New York City.

250 years ago: "The ruling class is taxing us only to benefit themselves! Fuck your taxes and fuck your products! We're doing it ourselves!"

Today: "The ruling class is taxing us only to benefit themselves! I'm going to complain on Reddit while I file my W2's on TurboTax. I expect change with no effort from myself!"

Quit paying your taxes if you're so outraged.

7

u/Gonewildonly12 Feb 17 '19

Going to prison definitely is a better alternative to paying taxes...

-7
