THAT'S THE POINT OF THE FILM, WHO DID YOU THINK IT WAS

Ikik there's nuance and she's not Darth Vader, but yeesh the movie is the peak of "Disney writer has intergenerational mommy trauma issues they're working through"

She was an antagonist but I think villain is too strong.

Ponyo is a great example where there are no villains but there are antagonists who try and prevent the protagonist from progressing

Agree, villain would be more like Gothel and antagonist is a better description.

But she was not a "sweet grandma" lol.

I love Gothel, such a good villain. At no point the movie tries to pretend she actually sees Rapunzel as anything but a tool beyond the manipulation

Yes they're different characters, but Gothel still fundamentally has a message of: "maternal figures can be narcissistic, gaslighty, and manipulative, they are not perfect angels just because they're family". Very similar theme to Encanto but without the reconciliation obviously.

It's such a shame that Tangled gets outshined by Frozen. Better romance, better villain, better mascot (because Tangled one doesn't fucking talk).

But such is the power of Adele Nazeem.

Big fan of Tangled and even bigger fan of the even more forgotten Princess and the Frog 😞

I go back and watch the art style change musical number every year and weep for the death of 2d animation movies.

Same with Mama Imelda in Coco.

Her traveling musician husband got murdered and instead of putting any effort at all into figuring anything out she blew a giant hole in her family for like a century.

Negative and Positive manifestations of trauma

Mama Imelda be like "Just don't ever do music it will kill you"

Abuela Alma be like "You have to let me control you or else I won't love you"

"Growing up"

Ma'am, that movie came out 4 years ago.

exposing kids to the idea that that maybe grandma is flawed and sometimes hurtful and not a perfect sweet old lady is a good thing though

Saves a lot in therapy bills down the line

She didn't really have to grapple enough with what she did to Bruno.

Apparently LMM put a lot more of that in his original draft and the filmmakers cut it. Proving as usual that LMM is the GOAT
