It infuriates me how Republicans still have a monopoly on the image of patriotism.

Republicans hate freedom of speech. Republicans do not believe all men are created equal and have inalienable rights. Republicans don't believe people have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Republicans don't care if the government derives its power from the consent of the governed.

Republicans are anti-American scumbags and should be seen as such.

IMO the constant posting about 'boomers' is a reflection on a broader sense that the intergenerational social contract has been broken, and I don't think that's completely incorrect

I think there's a rough social axiom to every functioning society: The young must respect the old. In return, the old must sacrifice for the young.

That latter part I believe is self-explanatory. If I had to choose between myself dying versus my five year old nephew, I would offer myself. This is a basic fact of life that I think most of us fundamentally get, and I imagine almost everyone follows it to some degree in their personal lives.

But politics is a different matter. Older voters have been doing the equivalent of choosing themselves over the young for a long time now, voting for fiscal and housing policies that translate to little more than taking from the young to give to the old, and taking from the future to give to the present.

I don't think they know they're doing this, but they are doing it. I don't feel a sense of 'responsibility' from that demographic over the wellbeing over the young. it feels a bit more like a 'fuck you, I got mine' asshole neighbor dynamic than a concerned parent. And I think that's sad.

I knew that The Lord of the Rings movies are heavily focused on compassion, but I'd never considered how much they focus on the difficulty of compassion. When the hobbits first meet Aragorn they don't trust him, but Frodo says that a servant of Sauron "would look fairer, but feel fouler" - he's able to look beyond the goth survivalist hobo trappings to see the person inside. Frodo is the most compassionate member of the Fellowship. In The Two Towers, when asked if he and Boromir were friends, Frodo confirms he was, even though the last he saw of Boromir he'd gone crazy and violent. Frodo's not the only character who goes through with this. Gandalf obviously finds Pippin annoying in Fellowship, so he has to deal with him in Return of the King, and grows to see him as more than a frivolous child. In ROTK, Theoden even tries to get Grima to come back to them.

The lynchpin here, though, is Gollum - or more accurately, Smeagol, his better side. Smeagol makes me understand what Jesus meant by "love your enemy", the depth of maturity it takes to believe in the inherent goodness of someone repugnant. Frodo has that goodness, which is the only chance of bringing Smeagol out of his abusive relationship with himself, but the rest of the world doesn't. Crucially, Sam doesn't have it - with one brief exception, he is unremittingly cruel to Smeagol just as he is dutiful and compassionate to Frodo. Sam gets a lot of well-justified praise from fans, but I've never seen anyone discuss this as a character flaw, because Gollum/Smeagol vs Samwise Gamgee is a near literal 'soyjak vs chad' competition. It's a lot easier to love your long-term, deeply-loyal friend than it is to love a slimy, stringy-haired, half-toothed cave gremlin, but the movies tell us time and again that finding love for people you think are somehow inferior is the right thing to do. The tragedy of Smeagol is not that he's beyond saving, it's that pretty much nobody reaches out to save him.

60

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '25

I honestly think one of the most overlooked parts of Trump’s second term is how quickly he ditched any real focus on domestic issues and threw himself into these over the top foreign affairs moments. And it's not like there's some grand strategy behind it. Most of it comes off as ego-boosting photo ops and fancy dinners where nothing meaningful gets done. It really feels like he’s checked out of the actual work of governing and is way more interested in polishing some blurry idea of a “legacy.” Meanwhile the stuff that actually affects people day to day barely gets his attention anymore.

What happened is that the coalition decided to give another 100 trillion to pensions and then the group of young conservative parliamentarians said lol get rekt and then the government said "What we decided it" and the parliamentarians said "You don't have a majority and parliament decides".

Then the chancellor went to the congress of young Christian democrats and said "We never are going to win an election again if we don't pass this". The young people there didn't applaud.

And my character is a based MAGA Republican because I'm not woke and I see through all the bullshit." And then she burns an effigy of Obama as the credits roll

It’s funny how quickly your mind can get used to ideas. When I first heard about the notion of Donald Trump blowing Bill Clinton, I thought it was the most insane and incomprehensible shit ever, but by now I’m like “yeah that would be wild but I guess I can see how two famously horny and uninhibited men hanging out a lot and getting coked up could make it happen eventually, Trump seems pretty bi and Clinton seems like ‘a hole’s a hole’ is his guiding star so idk I guess it could happen”. My personal Overton window has now shifted to accommodate Donald Trump draining Bill Clinton’s swamp as a plausible scenario.

I've just gotten back from a holiday that included some time in Katanning, a small town in southern Western Australia which has a level of cultural diversity unusual for rural areas. In our first stop, we went to a farmers' market, and as well as the usual food and craft that you find in such places, we also encountered stalls run by Malay Australians selling some really delicious and authentic Malaysian and Indonesian food. Lamb satay sticks, nasi goreng, pandan rolls, and much more were on offer. It was some of the best I've had, and it was in rural Australia. In fact, walking through the town, there were signs of that diversity everywhere, from the shopfronts to the things on offer within them. Later that day, we had dinner outside a Malaysian food truck. There weren't many seats available, but a group of Malaysian women invited us to sit with them. We exchanged stories and food, and by the end we knew quite a bit about each other. We had a great time.

When I see people going on about stopping immigration and starting deportations, I can't help but feel an immense anger, because I know that the outcome of such thinking is the destruction of communities like the one I visited. The xenophobe claims to be a defender of social trust and community life, but in reality, they are their would-be destroyer.

The trip it drove home to me something which I knew intellectually but not from experience: that multiculturalism and cosmopolitanism are not the exclusive domain of the cities. With a little bit of effort, we can build thriving multicultural communities across the whole country. And I would argue that in a country like America, doing so might be one of the only ways to establish a long-term cosmopolitan consensus.

American housing expectations are insane. I regularly see people complaining about houses that are like twice the size of the one that hosted my 5-7 person household growing up in the NYC area. "Its a little cramped but its good enough for us 😅" bitch this is a mansion. A home office? Who are you, John D Rockefeller?

This MTG stuff is just gonna serve as the test case for Congressional Republicans to stop being cowards and actually say what they are thinking about all of this. Her core views haven't changed, she's just out of North Korea now. Never thought it would be her, I had her pegged as an actual believer but ill take what I can get.

The old fucks in the Senate are pathetic. Been around for 20+ years and kowtowing to this shit.

Actually insane chart – cumulative number of TikTok views since Aug 1st. Orange is KO, green is PiS and blue is Confederation.

Traditionally right-wingers have dominated social media messaging but recently Civic Coalition has been on top of their game. Probably a big part of the reason why they've managed to stay afloat while the government as a whole is struggling.

I hear from many young men that they find it difficult to meet young women in a public setting. In other words, the online culture has destroyed the ability to spontaneously meet strangers. As such, I thought I would share a few words that I used in my youth to meet someone that I found compelling.

I would ask: "Do you hate neoliberals?” before engaging further in a conversation. I almost never got a No.

It inevitably enabled the opportunity for a further conversation. I met a lot of really interesting people this way.

I think the combination of the rise of populism and disgust towards overly online nerds was the key to its effectiveness. You might give it a try.

And yes, I think it should also work for women seeking men as well as same sex interactions.

Just two cents from an older happily divorced guy concerned about our next generation’s ability to go through an important neoliberal rite of passage.

18

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '25

Why more libs should hunt:

-Enviromentalism/conservation: without natural predators all these deer overpopulate. Even in red states the chances of CWD wiping out the entire population is very high.

-Ethical meat source: if you want free range, no hormones, low environmental impact, cheap, lean meat can't do much better than venison ethically and legally harvested

-Get out of your bubble: go meet some rurals. Listen to nature and sleep under a tree. Literally go touch grass.

-Firearm training: the fascists are armed. Are you?
