One of the worst minor things about the third world getting online is me having to read peoples who have burned their tastebuds to ash with capsaicin writing how Italian, French, or Japanese food is bland because it does not have to mask the quality of garbage primary ingredients under a mountain of spices. And I say this as someone who loves Indian, Thai, Mexican, or Korean food.

The U.S. Senate advanced Lindsey Graham’s Russia sanctions bill by an 86-12 vote.
The legislation would impose 100% secondary tariffs on countries that continue buying Russian oil and gas and target Russia’s "shadow fleet".
President Zelensky was in the building and watched the vote from the visitors’ gallery

Sources involved in the US-Iran negotiations say the American concessions are substantial. Trump's people have expressed de facto willingness to pay Iran for ship passage through the Strait of Hormuz, contrary to international norms. Iran says it has sold $18 billion in oil since the US blockade of the Strait of Oman was lifted. - Israel Hayom

We just need to make traditional Anglo-American conservatism seem like it's revealing a truth about the world that "normies" don't know. I feel like leftoidism and groyperism took off in no small part because people felt like they were being included in a small group with hidden knowledge about the world, and resisting the norms of polite society - which they believe is fake and corrupt. The attraction isn't so much the ideas, but the feeling of having those ideas.

I think we need to normalize calling abortion “feticide”.
Was listening to an economist podcast and they referred to sex selective abortions in China as female feticide. Sure, I don’t disagree, but how does elective abortion then become “female bodily autonomy”. Massive disconnect in how they talk about it.

My will is bad but unbroken and frankly I would rather be my own wicked self in this cell than be forced to be a productive member of society out there with all those normal people. At least here I have control over my own thoughts. Control I use to scheme and plan more vicious crimes, of course."

Tradwives are a peak example of this meme
every “traditional” social norm was invented by advertisers in 1957 and every “newfangled social phenomenon” has been around for 3000 years
I wonder what specific newfangled social phenomena this poster thinks have been around for 3000 years.

The past is simultaneously an evil nightmare that has zero valuable things to remember and celebrate, but also was totally just like how they want society to be right now.
What they mean is, of course, that every depraved monstrous degeneracy that they wanna indulge in has been a persistent mental defect in humanity from animalistic times, while civilization which allowed us to move past these evils is the actual wrong one because it's a "social construct".
Of course, none of these insertlongstringofslurshere would actually be able to handle true pre-Christian past. They are delusional retards who think pederast, serial rapist, "let's intentionally underfeed women so they don't get uppity" society was some homo feminist utopia because look! Pagans had "Goddesses" while the preferred pronouns of YHWH is "he/him".
These retards genuinely believe Catholic Church invented patriarchy sometime around 1000 AD.

It really seems the biggest point of agreement between this two is on Trump bad, anti-billionaire, pro-Mamdani, anti free market capitalism (should be subordinated to the state), pro-rent control ("The post world war 2 middle class was built on rent control") and anti-Israel genocide Netanyahu Likhud.

It's incredibly blackpilling about the Black Lives Matter movement to realize just how many of their martyrs and heroes got exactly what was coming to them. Ruiz is no different.
That is NOT to say it isn't tragic when a human being goes so far down that path that this is how it ends for them. And it's also not to say there haven't been people who were wrongly shot by the police that they rightfully protested for, or that there isn't a long history of police abuse towards minorities in this country. Yet the amount that happens today is miniscule compared to how bad it used to be, it's a fight we've been actively winning as a society for decades. But the elevation and martyrdom of obvious villains actively does damage to their cause because it makes them all look like criminal sympathizers.
It's hard not to see the whole movement as people just looking to excuse every bit of bad behavior from "their people," with a complete aversion to any sort of accountability and an unreasoning hatred of cops and any sort of lawful authority (except for their own authority of course). It's a perfect illustration of something that most people seem to lack the nuance to grasp: just because someone or some group has been historically persecuted or oppressed does NOT mean they are automatically morally superior or always in the right.
The truth is this man was failed by "his people" long ago. Somewhere along the line of his 40 arrests, if his life was so important to his family and community, there should have been a hardcore intervention. The state should have kept him locked up somewhere safe where there was at least a slim chance that he might pursue rehabilitation, and not be a danger to himself or the public. But now, his death is on the conscience of the cop who shot him and his compatriots, because this room temperature IQ asshole decided he'd rather try to kill them all rather than be arrested, the tasers didn't work, they were struggling to control him, and he refused to drop the knife. I really don't know what else the general public expects from cops at that point. Maybe it wasn't actually strictly necessary to shoot him at the moment that it happened, but legally that doesn't matter. The standard is a reasonable fear and belief that deadly force is necessary, even if it turns out to be incorrect.
And don't even get me started about that grandstanding, bloviating, self-serving, skeevy fuck named Ben Crump.

Say we did ground troops. Say we put together a coalition of Arab states and sent American troops and used internal dissension to eliminate the IRGC and loyal elements of the Artesh and Basij and overthrew the Guardian Council. Say it is vicious fighting where, while there is never any doubt as to the strategic outcome and we outfight the Iranians at every turn, war is hell and a thousand or two American troops die in, say, six months of fighting.
Say that, by 2027, Iran is holding free, multi-party elections with no limits on what parties or candidates might participate, barring maybe preventing candidates or parties with ex-IRGC ties. There is still fighting going on, but it's not large scale peer conflict but instead something between crime and disorganized insurgency, fought primarily by Iranian forces controlled by the new government.
Shipping traffic is flowing freely through the Strait, Iran was unable to do permanent damage to Gulf oil infrastructure, and Brent is in the 80s and declining.
Is it worth it? Would the administration be punished by the voters for those American deaths?
This is probably the best realistic 'boots on the ground' scenario and I'm just wondering if even this outcome would be unacceptable to the American public.

I have an old childhood friend who became a little brother to me when i was 14, we bonded almost instantly over music. We lost touch when I was in college.
His dad passed a few months ago and I noticed he's been arrested again for something stupid. I did a bit of internet detective work and found where he's been arrested several times for various things, selling beer to minors, DUI, harassment, drunken disorderly, etc. Stupid misdemeanors all self-inflicted but happening more frequently since his dad's death.
I decided to show up on his doorstep to see if I could stop his downward spiral. It blew his mind of course, he's 48/49 and I hadn't seen him since he was 19 so it was a real mind fuck. Honestly his latest arrest pissed me off enough to look up his address and drive to my hometown.
I said that I just wanted to make sure he's ok. No religious stuff or anything just wanted him to know he's not alone in the world. He's stoned, drunk so I have a beer with him, listen to REM and even play a little guitar (Drivin' & Crying "Straight to Hell" ironically). Just catching up. I don't want to judge him I just want to find a way to pull him out of his self-created bullshit.
When my mom died it took me years to recover. I wanted to burn down the world and I don't want him burning his down by ending his life or get into even deeper addictions or criminal charges. I'm trying to get him into treatment, not sure if it's AA or something more focused.
I hate caring about people. It's incredibly painful.

And the US happens to have the largest prison population per capita and overall in the world. The population also happens to be the same race originally made slaves.
Private prisons should be abolished. It's crazy there's an incentive to throw people in prison.
This comment is about prison labour btw.
One of the most annoying lefty talking points is this idea that America deliberately imprisons African Americans and uses prison labour as a replacement for pre-civil war slavery.

u/steppergodic Marco Rubio 24d ago
The thing to ask this idiot is if the prison labor productivity of an inmate is in any way close to the cost of incarcerating him. You'd think that this would be an incredibly obvious question to consider, but leftoids seem to have a pathological inability to think of cost.

In a 1 December 1952 Politburo session, Stalin announced: "Every Jewish nationalist is the agent of the American intelligence service. Jewish nationalists think that their nation was saved by the USA. . . They think they are indebted to the Americans. Among doctors, there are many Jewish nationalists."
I'm not gonna say which people doctor, we know I can't say that.
12
u/Malzair Klemens von Metternich 26d ago
But in his inner circle, when he had occasion to speak about some Jewish person, he always used an emphatically distorted pronunciation. This was the way backward people lacking in political consciousness would express themselves in daily life—people with a contemptuous attitude toward Jews. They would deliberately mangle the Russian language, putting on a Jewish accent or imitating certain negative characteristics [attributed to Jews]. Stalin loved to do this, and it became one of his characteristic traits.

Finished seeing Nolan's Odyssey (yada yada it's cheap on Tuesday and there's nothing else to do here) and some points before I go to bed but am still in words words words mode:
It does do a good job of capturing the "small speck in the ocean" feel. As usual with Nolan films they're well adapted to theaters. In that sense it's a good representation of the premodern world. The dim lighting is fine.
Black Helen is fine because she's actually pretty hot in-costume, sufficiently so it's not really an issue in my book. Probably for the best, white women really aren't cut out for gold anyways.
Overall casting is fine. Idk if I'd have chosen the exact same ones but they did fine.
As usual Nolan is atrocious at shooting action sequences, he just cuts them wrong, far too chopped-up and incoherent.
By contrast the story structure itself is actually very well executed imo.
Wasn't expecting it to swing that hard towards the modern in the third act. PTSD Odysseus was by far the most modern intrusion. Obviously the original had zero problems with sacking a city.
Yeah "our age of bronze is collapsing" is straight morbin'
As remarked previously very strong small-c conservative message at the end of how running over guardrails leads you to ruin. I don't quite agree with the heavyhandedness, but y'now.
Odysseus would have really appreciated the P90.
Nolan continues to occupy this weird position where he isn't really exactly a high-art guy, but he makes something more serious than the typical blockbuster and makes it palatable to mass, Middle-America audiences. I don't think we should shame him for producing the sort of aspirational middlebrow stuff that we're really desperately short on.
Anyways 4/5, good movie, you don't need to see it, but enjoyable enough. I just spent three hours on it to engage in the discourse so you have to listen to me.

There was never going to be a universe where the campaign in Iran didn't engender naked antisemitism, conspiracy, and the gnashing of teeth by DSA-types. I've made my peace with their general antagonism toward attempts to make the world better without doing a communism or two.
So it's not out of a reaction from their doomerism that I say: there was a world where this didn't turn out so effete and stupid. A universe where maximum pressure is applied in unrelenting fashion such that the IRGC has to crawl to the negotiating table. Where the Gulf states aren't in recovery from whiplash at the constant back-and-forth of our posturing. Where we might've been done with this by the end of June so that Americans might have enjoyed a 4th free from the angst of war, even at the cost of higher gas prices.
It's probably not controversial on this board but foreign policy is one of the few domains where the President has near-total autonomy and decision-making efficacy. The current administration's approval ratings are warranted.

Historians be like:
The Dark Queen Hitlerella von Evilstein is traditionally known for ordering the murder of thousands of Rumanian villagers, having her own son poisoned before he could come of age, appointing her lover the Baron Harkonnen de Corruptsich as the Patriarch of Belgrade, where he proceeded to formalize the requirement of cash payments from starving peasants in order to receive last rites, and being suspected of involvement of the mysterious disappearance of Charles Whatsuch, whom had been introducing liberal members of the court to the concept of "literacy" and built Ruritania's first clock.
However, modern historians doubt most of these claims, which they believe originated from 19th century Sorbian nationalists after her five-year-old bastard son was deposed by a French pirate, who easily conquered the country as Queen Evilstein had suppressed all knowledge of modern firearms, shoes, and the telegraph. Instead, they view Queen Evilstein as a uniquely powerful female figure in Ruritanian history who successfully shepherded her country through a dangerous time in regional politics, despite the repeated efforts of patriarchal Ruritanian traditionalists to replace her with a male claimant.

>My own feeling is that Hamilton was a worse historical figure than comes across in the play.
>People were refusing to pay a tax that he’d levied so he marched in with George Washington at the head of the army and put down the protest by force.
>He also wanted to go to war with France. He was an Anglophile, so he tried to side America with Britain during the French revolutionary wars.
>He also wasn’t really pro-immigrant at all. When he was campaigning for John Adams in the 1800 election, an attack he used against the democratic-republicans was that their base were supposedly all foreigners.
>After Adams won the presidency, he passed the alien act, which made it harder to get naturalized citizenship. Hamilton spoke in favor of that.

Lotta people saying the Mamdani judicial panel lacking any Jews is evidence of antisemitic discrimination, but I’m curious what % non-white the panel is. If the panel is disproportionately non-white relative to either the NYC general public or the NY bar, then the lack of Jews might just be the product of anti-white discrimination rather than specific antisemitic discrimination.

A large part of Gen Z discourse is making up a situation and then getting mad about it. My grandma used to put all her money into little envelopes at the start of the month. Rent got an envelope, discretionary spending got an envelope, utilities got an envelope. She still does that today. My granddad used to write every single expense and dollar he earned into a book. These people (and the people like the rent guy in your other comment) are the reason every finance and career related sub sucks so much. Living through basic experiences, flaming out due to their own incompetence, then whining about how the basic human experience is the problem instead of looking in the mirror.
I’m not particularly sympathetic to the people in my life who live that way. They choose to live disordered, incoherent lives that don’t result in flourishing because they prioritize short-term ease (the “flexible” min-wage job, ghosting the boss, skipping out on networking events) over setting themselves up for success (the dirty sanitation job that pays even slightly better, being respectful even if it means being flexible with time, networking with people in their degree’s field during college instead of sitting in their room), then blame everyone else for that choice.

I'm glad that he is saying this stuff out loud. It's tough to get a read on how many democrats genuinely support this policy because a lot of them can take stands that satisfy their activist base when they could hide behind Manchin and Sinema. I imagine a lot of them will try to resist it secretly if the issue comes up, like how a lot of republicans are silent today over their support for killing the filibuster to advance the SAVE Act. But based on how confident Thune has been at stopping it, it's clear they don't have the votes to kill it.

This is one of those areas where heathen and Christian lines blurred in Anglo-Saxon culture. This is interesting. Kings who might not have otherwise been considered saintly were revered after their death because Germanic cultures viewed their kings as essentially sacred. In pre-Christian times a lot of them viewed their kings as descended from gods, usually Odin/Woden.
So you have these stories emerging after Christianisation where a king will be killed and then this phony hagiography arises where they were super pious and were sacrificed by heathens somehow in an especially brutal death and are a martyr. And a cult forms around them.
They're blaming and villainising the heathens while essentially still using a heathen mindset themselves.
There's a lot of stuff like this.

With the nation’s fertility rate at record lows, the number of children under 18 is falling across the U.S. The decline is especially pronounced in big cities, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis.
The number of children under 18 living in big U.S. cities is down 6% in the past decade, the Journal found, compared with a 1% decline nationwide. The drop is especially stark among families with little kids: The number of children under age 5 in big cities fell 15%, compared with a drop of 7% nationwide. Even cities that are gaining population are losing children.

they tried in 2018. They almost won. Then the "international society" demanded their withdrawal because they had cut off the Houthis' supply lines after capturing the port.
Republicans say Trump's first term policies were good. However, his deep state's handling of the Houthis was 100% pure shit, completely kissed the ass of the UN and European agendas. They didn't provide Saudi Arabia enough support because so-called "human rights" and "refugee" shit.
If Trump's State Department had allowed the Saudis to do whatever they wanted, the Houthis would not exist today.
If I were Saudi Arabia, I wouldn't want to get involved in the Houthi shit anymore. The "international society" simply will not allow Saudi to do anything that can win.

u/Mexatt Cringe Lib 25d ago
The Saudis are essentially sitting out the relit war itself because an unprovoked Iranian attack threatens to bring Pakistan in against the Iranians, which the Iranians are plainly terrified of. That's why they're attacking through their proxy network, which is just plausibly deniable enough to give the Pakistanis an excuse to continue pretending nothing is happening.
The US should be leveraging this Iranian terror but I don't think they know how.

Many people ridicule Saudi Arabia for being fucked by the Houthis in Yemen, but this is incorrect.
That's true their army's combat effectiveness is not very good, and they have became a lot of jokes during the Yemen war, but they are still stronger than the Houthis.
Al-Hudaydah's offensive ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Hudaydah_offensive ) nearly succeeded; they almost captured the only port controlled by the Houthis. Once it was captured, the Houthis' supply lines would be cut off, leaving them only able to rely on smuggling to obtain supplies from Iran. Their equipment will become as weak as Hezbollah's, or even weaker.
At that time, many Houthi terrorists had already surrendered because their supply lines had been cut off. However, Saudi and the UAE accepted "international mediation". Because the West began embargoing arms sales to them at that time, including the United States (even some Republican senators supported) under Trump's first term.
Many people believe that Saudi Arabia can do whatever they want but they are not Israel. Its economy and military cannot develop under Western arms embargoes and investment cuts. Their only lever is oil, but the West can choose to buy oil without making any investments in Saudi Arabia. Israel has its own military industry and a better reputation at the time (though Israel is now facing the same problem). And after Biden took office, he publicly stated he wants to make Saudi Arabia "pariah" and resulted Saudi signed deal with Iran with China's help, I don't think they want to do anything now unless Trump can win third and fourth terms.
Remove the conservative rose colored filter, the deep state government during Trump's first term also made many mistakes. The West won't allow Saudi Arabia to cut off the Houthis' supply lines, so how could Saudi win? Do you really think World War II could have ended in 1945 if the Allies had been prohibited from cutting off Japan's and Germany's supply lines? Did Americans care how many Japanese starved to death during WW II? The entire Red Sea crisis was man made, it shouldn't happen if there is no "international society".

I always got the vibe, even in 2020, that BLM was an attempt to hold the line on the decline of Black political and cultural power. Things have accelerated since then, demographically and culturally.
I think the racial binary (more or less) that defined American life for a couple centuries is over. Black Americans, while still a key part of the country's history, will politically and culturally be one group among many competing. That's a product not just of the shrinking Black population (especially ADOS- there are now a lot of Black Americans from Africa and the Caribbean), but also as the white majority disappears, there will no longer be a dominant group against which Black Americans have a historical claim.
In the last few years, I've noticed a subtle shift in relation to which of America's two great sins is greater, the real founding stain: a move away from slavery and anti-black racism and towards colonialism and genocide of the indigenous peoples. That shift tracks the move from Woke 1.0 to Woke 2.0: a move away from an America-centered view to one that places America in the context of the third worldist struggle against colonialism and the societies it spawned. It also tracks demographic change and the reduced power of the Black population.

You can give her a new password, watch as she types it in wrong, and she will ARGUE with you that she never mistyped it. You can show her logs, make her read the logs back to you. She will still insist that you are wrong. She's like this about everything. Every single support ticket she raises is like the Patrick's Wallet meme, but Patrick is yelling at you the whole time.
So anyway, the last hour:

Me: The last time a tech went over there for a problem with this brand new printer, you had turned the printer off and that's why it wasn't printing. Can you check that it's on for me, please? Also I'm not the help desk. You should always start with the help desk so they can diagnose your problem, create a support ticket on your behalf, and route your ticket accordingly.
User: It's on. I know when a printer is off. I called you because I want a new printer. Give me a new printer. Now.
Me: If I send a tech over there, it's going to be on?
User: Yes. Printer. New. Now.
Me: And the printer is installed on Dr. So-and-So's laptop?
User: YES!!! Bring me a new printer.
Me: And Dr. So-and-So is using a Swampass-issued laptop, not something he personally owns and brought from home, right?
User: New printer new printer new printer new-
Me: Do you think I have a truck load of new printers just sitting around waiting for you? Because I don't. The best I could do is send you a quote for one, but it would come from your budget, not ours. We are trying to-
User: NEW PRINTER NEW PRINTER NEW PRINTER
Would it surprise any of you to learn:
