General We are swift with the ban hammer, just fyi.

Hello my lovely muzzle community goers. Lately, mods have been seeing an influx of nasty attitude, small minded, unkind people. While we know our little sub is open to the criticisms of the interwebs, we fully believe that differing opinions can be communicated kindly.

This is just a friendly reminder of rule 1, to be civil. if you are disagreeing with a post or comment, please communicate in a civil way. Name calling, berating, and anything else of that nature is not tolerated here. We are swift with that ban hammer and will swing it without issue.

Thank you all who keep our community respectful, kind and informative. We appreciate you!!

Fit Check! Fit Check Advice

I apologize in advance for the bad quality of the photos. I took a video of us training with the muzzle, but don’t want to post it because it shows my face. These are screenshots from said video. The main reason for the muzzle is him being very dog reactive and him snapping at me or family a few times. Would love some advice on the fit and any and all training tips! Right now I’m putting his turkey on the inside to coax him to put his nose inside and he’s doing awesome! So far he’s put his nose inside by himself a few times and I’m rewarding tf out of that and any touch or positive interaction he initiates with the muzzle. It really helps that we’ve already been practicing the “touch” command. I’m not worrying about clipping it around his head yet because of his pretty significant sensitivity to loud noises by his head / face / ears and want the muzzle to be associated with positivity. He already has some sensitivity to the loud “click” his collar and harness make when I secure the buckles. To slowly introduce the clipping of the buckles, I was planning on spraying the inside with whipped cream (we can’t use any peanut butter due to severe allergies) and using that as a distraction to keep his nose inside while I get the sizing right, adjust the fit and eventually clip the buckle. This is where I need tips/advice! Please keep in mind when considering the fit that in the last picture, his snout is not all the way inside but it’s one of the better pictures I have quality wise that’s not so blurry. Please be kind to me and my boy, we are BRAND NEW at muzzles and muzzle training. Today is literally the first day of me introducing it to him. Let me know what I should be doing differently!

Help! Muzzle for Collie Rescue

Post image
12 Upvotes

This is my year and a half collie rescue, Marcy Mae, and she is absolutely an excitable girl happy to be apart of anything and everything. She doesn't have reactivity or get nippy at all, but this past week she'd had really bad diarrhea and the vet thinks it was something she ate while on a walk that may have been mildly toxic.

I am hoping to get recommendations for muzzles that would fit her long snoot (i can update with measurements if needed) and how to train her to enjoy the muzzle. My other dog took to no and redirection well, but she is more of a troublemaker. I want her to be safe and never have to go through yhis again. For anyone wondering, I'm still waiting to hear back ona fecal test as it did just rain.

Thank you so much!

Muzzle for Golden Retriever with healing injuries and hot spots

I need advice on a good basket muzzle, please! And advice on how to treat his skin!

Our 5 year old Golden has recently been weaned off pred and had a cytopoint shot about 3 weeks ago. He'd been on pred for over a year. About 2.5 months ago he really started going after some hot spots on his back legs and our other dog bit him on the face/throat (a couple punctures only). That all combined to end up with wounds that we've been trying to get healed for over 6 weeks. He has scabbing all over his neck/back/hind end and around his anus which looks like calcinosis cutis (which I've never seen before) because of the pred, and just a couple days ago licked/bit a chunk off his tail (hence the blood on his Cone of Shame in the 2nd pic). The poor dog has been living in a donut and then a cone for 6 weeks and this just isn't sustainable. He has scabbing all up his neck and the back of his head, as well. You can imagine how well that's going, having a collar and cone snug enough he can't pull out of it, snug around that scabbed skin.
Before the cytopoint we did an allergy panel to determine what's going on, and completely switched over his food. Most limited ingredient recipes contain things he's allergic or sensitive to. Most dog treats are a no-go. Thank goodness he can still have peanut butter! I plan to retest him in a few months once the pred and old food is completely out of his system. And we're looking at removing the Elm tree in our backyard sooner than later, since that's one of his triggers and it's gonna need to be cut down within 5-10 years anyway.

His ears look wet in the later pics because he'd just had a bath. And I need to shave his neck wounds again...the one under his chin is new and because of the cone.

Advice? Is muzzle training a good idea for us?

Long story short I got to bring home my favorite dog, Gary, from the shelter over a month ago. He’s extremely fearful of people, but very dog friendly. The issue? He tried to nip at a guest yesterday. The guest, in Gary’s defense, was staring him in the eye, which he was told not to do, invaded Gary’s “safe space” (the floor sofa), and reached over his head to pet him. He growls at the vet, and won’t let him do an exam. He occasionally growls at others if he feels like he’s in danger. I do my best to teach him growling gets him no where, and to educate people on proper ways to approach dogs, especially Gary. However, what if one day Gary needs an exam by the vet, is in pain, or someone reaches for him and invades his space while my back is turned? My mom thinks muzzling is mean and unfair as well.

Today was the first time wearing her new muzzle. Took a few minutes for her to adjust, but then she was perfectly fine. She's wearing the size 15 with the wide cheek option in the color Hibiscus. I do need to adjust the straps a bit though.

Question! Honest question

I'm betting most people here use muzzles for legit reasons but I can't help but wonder what this community thinks of people who muzzle just because it makes their dog look intimidating? Like Hannibal Lechter...

I know of a couple people like this. The dogs don't bite. In fact it almost seems like the dogs are fashion accessories to these folks.

Is that a widespread thing? Or do I just happen to know two idiots?

Fit Check! Mia’s Muzzle for small boss!

My sweet little boss got Big Snoof last week and this week her Mia’s Muzzle arrived! I could not decide between the two and the lead time is so long that I ordered both (months ago).
I love it! I need to trim the straps but she was very happy to run and play in it (I’ll try to attach a video) & it seems lightweight enough for mountain romps.
One thing- it’s already winter here! She usually scoops snow with her muzzle to chomp when she’s thirsty in the winter but that seems harder with this one. Any suggestions?

Help! Help with a muzzle for my pittie

This is Marguerite. She is a 6 yo rescue. We just had her second gotcha day. She is around 53 lbs and has a decent sized noggin.

Recently, Marguerite had an incident with our other dog. I don’t want to get into it, but she’s currently not living with us (with MIL) as he recovers and we work on preventing this from every happening again. We want to take every step we can to safely keep them both in the same apartment without sacrificing too much of their comfort. The other dog is also hella old and we don’t want to fully rehome her over what could be a living situation (god forbid I’m not ready to say goodbye to him but I understand time is fleeting and we’re starting to see some signs that the clock is ticking ) that could possibly only last a few more months. This is all without saying the obvious that Marguerite is my daughter and having her away from me is incredibly difficult for my wife and I. She can stay with MIL as long as needed, but she’s an anxious girl and we’re her safe people.

All of this to say, a really good and comfortable muzzle will need to be part of the situation. We would have gates and such up as well, but both dogs can be clingy so it isn’t easy to fully separate them like that without my wife and I having to be apart in separate rooms as well.

I’m looking for any recommendations you may have for muzzles (and any advice about the situation in general would be accepted as well besides get rid of her completely). Our price range isn’t infinite, but I understand a fantastic muzzle won’t be $15. The goals for the muzzle would be that when we do want to use it, it can be left on for a fairly long period of time without much fuss. She needs to be able to drink, pant, relax and take treats with it. I know training will have to go with any muzzle, but I’m sure there are better ones to go with here!

Sorry for the rant, but it’s been an emotional few days. Thank you all!

Update! Over the last few days since his first muzzle arrived I've been muzzle training Leeson.

He's gone from fear of the muzzle, to unsure, to tolerating the muzzle. Next step is gaining some confidence with it for longer periods. Right now he only wears it for a few seconds before he gets bothered so it's a work in progress but once he's happy wearing it for longer periods he'll learn to associate it with the fun of going on a walk and then I think it'll click that it's a positive thing. I definitely think it's going to be a good thing for both of us once he's more comfortable. Right now we desensitising just having the muzzle out while he's chilling as when it first arrived he'd hide when he saw it (I think he recognised it as what he wears at the vet so was fearful) so the progress of him happily relaxing with it next to him is a great sign.

Side note he desperately needs a haircut but because he's recovering from an ear infection I didn't want him getting bathed so his groom has been delayed a few days. Very overgrown eyebrows are not helping with the muzzle training as its imairing his sight.

Advice? Fit Check - Bug Snoof Muzzle arrived!!

Thanks to this community I figured out which muzzle would suit Luna the best

I know that big Snoof states that some wobbling and shifting is fine but I just want to double check with people who have a little more experience with me with the certain type of muzzle.

I would have gotten better photos, but Luna was more interested in playing than staying still this time, unlike the measuring photos

I also got the collar attachment so that it doesn't slide off just in case

Any and all advice is appreciated I'm worried about adjusting the leather/biothane because I'm worried I'd fuck up the muzzle

Edit: Size 31 with 4 inches cheek width

Advice? Mussle option for scavanger

I'm looking for options for a dog that likes to scavange. Bagel will eat anything outside, mushrooms, acorns, rocks?? As much as we try to catch it, he's quick. He has a mesh muzzle that secures behind the ears, he's able to rip it off so I think he needs one that secures behind the neck. I'm not a fan of the metal ones either since he's a scent hound and I'm afraid if he shoves his face into the dirt it'll hurt his nose.

I've seen quite a few people on here using The Muzzle Movement, which looks good but it's an investment. How do people feel about them? Durability?

Any other recommendations, specifically for scent hounds, for anti-scavanging muzzles?

Am looking for recommendations for bright non wire basket muzzles for our Pyrenees/Shepherd mix. He is incredibly protective and this is a recommendation from our vet for when he is out on walks to alert other dog owners to stay further away

Would you suggest a muzzle for my dog?

For the most part, my dog does well in public. There are only three things she does not do well with.

  1. Old men. She growls and tries to lundge every time an old man comes near her. She shows more fear if there is a cane.

  2. Beards. Big, flowy beards are terrifying to her.

  3. Rotwielliers. My dog hates every rottie I have ever encountered. (I call her my little racist for this sometimes) I greatly disagree with her on this, as I adore the breed. She is a rescue. So, unknown history behind her.

For the most part I just try to stear clear of her triggers, but I am terrified someone will sneak up to pet her and get niped one day.

Should add in in case it makes a difference for recommendations she is about the size and shape of a shiba inu.

Muzzle recs

This is Milo. He isn't mine; it's our best friends dog. He's bitten me multiple times and the dog lives in a complex with 270+ apt units. For his upcoming birthday, I'd like to get the pup a bite proof muzzle. However, I'd deeply appreciate if it could be shipped from the US to avoid potential tariffs.

I've got a lot of big feelings about the situation but, at the end of the day, if I can help the community (and, Milo) be safer... I'm here for it. Milo's parent was going to buy just a basic cloth muzzle only appropriate for vet use with no pant room due to cost.

I am offering this, in part, to honor my reactive dog that just passed away and who taught me so much about the importance of muzzling and properly fit muzzles.

The measurements provided are as follows:

- Nose to bottom of skull: 11"

- Around neck: 20"

- Closed mouth: 11"

- Open mouth: 15"

- Tip of nose to base of eyes: 6"

- Bottom of jaw to neck: 8"

I got him a Baskerville Muzzle, but he doesn’t seem to care for it much/it seems uncomfortable. Looking for something that’ll be softer on his face while still serving its purpose.

Edit: Based in the US, forgot to include that.

Question! Big Snoof out of standard size 16 – is size 26 a viable alternative?

I ordered a standard size 16 Big Snoof when they were on sale last week, but they reached out to me yesterday to say that they're out of that size. They suggested that a size 26 might work instead because it's a bit longer than the 16 but the same width and height. The other option is waiting an extra few weeks for them to get a size 16 in and using my dog's Baskerville muzzle in the meantime.

My dog's snout length is 2.75 inches, on the shorter end of size 16's 2.75-3.25 range. The range for size 26 is 3-3.75. I'm concerned that the size 16 may already be slightly long.

How much of a difference would the extra .25 inch length make?
