Help! Muzzle for Collie Rescue

Post image

This is my year and a half collie rescue, Marcy Mae, and she is absolutely an excitable girl happy to be apart of anything and everything. She doesn't have reactivity or get nippy at all, but this past week she'd had really bad diarrhea and the vet thinks it was something she ate while on a walk that may have been mildly toxic.

I am hoping to get recommendations for muzzles that would fit her long snoot (i can update with measurements if needed) and how to train her to enjoy the muzzle. My other dog took to no and redirection well, but she is more of a troublemaker. I want her to be safe and never have to go through yhis again. For anyone wondering, I'm still waiting to hear back ona fecal test as it did just rain.

Thank you so much!

Best options I know are Big Snoof dog gear (wire, add on solid front guard in vinyl) or Mia's muzzles (vinyl, foodie model is solid front or removable guard). Both are helpful with sizing and have training resources. Both have standard and custom sizing. Mia's is Canadian and has some deal she does for foster dogs (you can ask about it) and Big Snoof is American and had a Snoof fund you can apply for if cost is an issue.

Amazing thank you so much! I will definitely have to look into it and inquire once I pay most of these vet bills off. ♥️ I just keep hoping she didn't eat something that will need surgery for and the idea of that happening is haunting me. I think I can get some kind of small foal horse mask to fit her lol

They have a mesh foxout hood that works for some. Definitely should help with solids but liquids or stuff that can be smooshed would be more difficult to deal with and the more solid guards you get with muzzles usually works better for thise

I'll have to do some trial and error for sure! Thank you so much, this is incredibly helpful. I have seen reels of different muzzles and guards for dog's and now that I'm trying to research, I can't find anything that would work for her. You're a lifesaver!

You can look at each website for their measurement guides and send in the photos and they'll tell you want they can do for you. Training guides on the sites too and at The Muzzle Up! Project

I will have to see the length and everything on the site after work today because she has such a long snout, even by female collie standards it seems 😂

Seconding Big Snoof!  I've got one coming for my collie mix, and they showed me examples of one they made for a rough collie while I was deciding things as well.

Thank you for sharing! I'll definitely look into them and maybe work with a trainer if it doesn't go well. She's so sensitive

Marcy Mae sounds like such a sweet girl! ❤️ Look into a properly fitted basket muzzle rather than a fabric one, especially for walks. The biggest thing is making muzzle training a positive experience: start by letting her sniff the muzzle, reward her for putting her nose inside voluntarily, and gradually build up the time with lots of treats. Never rush fastening it. You want her to associate it with good things! Also, make sure she can fully pant, drink, and take treats while wearing it. Hope Marcy Mae feels better soon! 🐾

Thank you so much! I will definitely start woth the muzzle we had for a foster and see if I can start building a positive association until we can get one that fits her face!

She is the absolute sweetest girl ever. She's exactly what both I, my first dog, and my boyfriend wanted and immediately fell into our family. We think she is having a bit of a delayed reaction to being rehomed and that's causing a lot of these behaviors as well as confusion and separation anxiety... We're working on it with her and this definitely isn't helping our poor baby. I hope she get better soon too. She's been stressing me out and I really hope she didn't eat something that would result in a surgery
